July 18, 2007 (KABC-TV) – A man is now behind bars in the hit-and-run
accident that left a young woman to die on a street in Glendale. That
accident happened last Tuesday. Eyewitness News Reporter Rob Hayes
is live in Glendale. Police say this suspect tried to escape back
to Armenia.
That’s right. It’s been over a week since 24-year-old elizabeth
sandoval was struck and killed by a car in glendale. During that time,
glendale police were chipping away. They got tips from the public,
they found the car and eventually they tracked down the suspect,
all the way down in Mexico city. Now that he’s in custody, they say
they’re turning their eye toward any people who may have helped him
avoid arrest.
A black Mercedes wheeled him into the spotlight, a Glendale police
car wheeled him into custody. Twenty-year-old Ara Grigoryan, wanted in
connection with that fatal hit-and-run, is now booked into the Glendale
jail, a long way from where he was originally arrested, in Mexico.
"We believe he was attempting to flee to Europe through Mexico,
and fortunately was detained there by the Mexican authorities,"
said Glendale Police Chief Randy Adams.
Police say Grigoryan crossed the border into Tijuana before he was
listed as a suspect. He then caught a flight to Mexico City where
investigators believe he was trying to fly to Spain, then to Russia,
and eventually to Armenia where he was born. Police say the 20-year-old
Grigoryan was behind the wheel of the black Mercedes that struck
and killed 24-year-old Elizabeth Sandoval last week as she crossed
Glendale Avenue.
The car took off and was eventually tracked down at a Van Nuys body
shop. Now that Grigoryan is in custody, investigators say they are
starting to look at the people who helped him evade arrest for the
past week.
