NO RECOGNITION OF NAGORNO-KARABAKH POLL
European Report
July 23, 2007
The EU said, on 19 July, that it does not recognise the independence of
Nagorno-Karabakh or the legitimacy of ‘presidential elections", which
were held on the same day in the breakaway province. The presidential
elections "should not have any impact on the peaceful settlement of
the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict", said the Portuguese Presidency in
its statement issued on 19 July.
The EU also reiterated its firm support for the Organisation
for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Minsk-Group and
its co-chairmen, and their efforts towards a settlement of the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and urged "the parties concerned to intensify
their efforts to find a negotiated solution to the conflict". The OSCE
Minsk Group was created in 1992 to encourage a peaceful, negotiated
resolution to the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia over
Nagorno-Karabakh. (JBO)
