KARABAKH CEC CERTIFIES ELECTION RESULTS

STEPANAKERT, JULY 23, ARMENPRESS: The Central Election Commission
(CEC) of Nagorno-Karabakh certified July 21 the results of the July
19 presidential election, declaring Bako Sahakian a new president of
the republic.
The meeting also unveiled the final returns of the vote, according
to which out of 92,114 eligible voters 71,286 went to the polls.
Bako Sahakian, the former head of Karabakh’s National Security Service,
won 85 percent of the vote.
His main challenger, Masis Mayilian, came in a distant second with
only 12 percent.
The CEC put the voter turnout at just over 77 percent.
Sahakian, 47, is a graduate of the law department of Karabakh State
University. In 1999-2001 he was head of the Nagorno-Karabakh Interior
Ministry. From August 2001 to February 2004 he was chief of the
Nagorno-Karabakh National Security’s state department.
>From February 2004 to June 2007 he was director of the Nagorno-Karabakh
Republic National Security Service. He was an active participant of
the war against Azerbaijan in early 1990s.
