UNEMPLOYMENT RATE REMAINS UNCHANGED

YEREVAN, JULY 24, ARMENPRESS: Armenian Employment Service said the
unemployment rate at the beginning of July did not change remaining
at 7.2 percent. It said the highest unemployment rate of 16.2 percent
was in the northwestern province of Shirak, followed by Lori with
15,2 percent and southernmost Syunik with 15.1 percent.
According to the Employment Service, Armenia’s economically active
population was 1.1 million, of whom 92.4 percent had jobs.
It said the number of people looking for job was 100,400, and 84.4
percent or 84,700 people were jobless. Women continued to make the bulk
of jobless people with a share of 72 percent. The urban unemployment
was 93.6 percent.
The share of jobless people with higher education declined to 13.5
percent from 14.4 percent from a year ago. Almost 60 percent had
secondary education. More than half of jobless people are between
35-45.
According to the Employment Service, there is a big demand for workers,
but wages are low and labor conditions are poor.
