YEREVAN, JULY 27, NOYAN TAPAN. ARFD will nominate a candidate of its
own from its party for the 2008 presidential elections, who will be
determined during the Supreme Meeting to be held in autumn. Armen
Rustamian, a representative of the ARFD Supreme Body, stated at the
July 27 press conference.
According to him, ARFD will not support any candidate nominated by
other political forces. At the same time, A. Rustamian stated that
cooperation with Zharangutiun is not excluded in the elections,
as ARFD has ideological communities with it. "Raffi Hovannisian’s
approaches have been always acceptable for us, our relations have
been constructive, on the very basis of national ideology," he said.
In A. Rustamian’s words, "the elections are very likely not to finish
by one tour." In his words, if ARFD nominates its own candidate,
the analysis of the results received by ARFD in the parliamentary
elections already does not suppose one tour of presidential elections.
In response to journalists’ question, A. Rustamian said that RA
President Robert Kocharian will support not the candidature nominated
by ARFD, but that of the RPA leader.
A. Rustamian said that the national orientation of country’s
development, which has been adopted by Armenia in 2008, unites RPA with
ARFD. However, in his words, ARFD is not content with the development
rates. A. Rustamian affirmed that the country has a potential for
developing much more quickly.
Asserting that ARFD is an alternative for both the authorities and the
opposition, A. Rustamian said that both struggle and stability should
not be an end in itself, but should serve for development of democratic
processes in the country. "The opposition-authorities relations cannot
contribute to country’s development, if the opposition sets itself the
task to remove the authorities as soon as possible and the authorities
try to annihilate their political opponents," A. Rustamian assured.
