Jeyhun Mollazade News.Az interviews Jeyhun Mollazade, chairman of
the American-Azerbaijani Council, co-director of US Azeris Network.

What can you say about the meeting between Turkish Premier Erdogan
and Armenian President Sargsyan in terms of normalization of the
bilateral relations?

It looks that the meeting did not produce any tangible result because
the issues of Turkish-Armenian relations are complex and emotional…it
is the recognition of "genocide" , opening of the borders in full
scale and Nagorno-Karabagh problem (NK) which could not be ignored
by Ankara no matter what…US Administration is pushing this agenda
forward for number of reasons…including the pledge made by President
Obama to the Armenian American community, the objective is also to
integrate Armenia into the Western world. However, non of that is
realistic without the steps and compromises that Armenian people
and the leadership should undertake on NK…I doubt that Turkey can
give up on NK and proceed on rapprochement with Erevan. It will hurt
any Turkish government relations with Baku, but also backfire it
domestically in local politics.

Information about possible soonest signing of a roadmap on
normalization of bilateral relations by Erdogan and Sargsyan has
recently been spread in mass media. Is the signing possible?

Roadmap signing is possible, but doing without progress that should
be also achieved on NK is very difficult for Turkish government.

The Turkish premier promised to include the Karabakh problem to the
agenda of his soonest talks with the US president. Will Obama listen
to Erdogan’s opinion?

I am sure that president Obama will listen to P.M. Erdogan on NK,
but Obama strongly believes that if Turkish-Armenia border opening
and rapprochement is linked to NK progress then nothing is going to
happen and he will be under the pressure to recognize "genocide"
by Armenians which he does not want to do because of worsening of
relations with turkey…Obama believes that such policy will help
for NK settlement if future, but it should not be a precondition for
breakthrough in Armenian-Turkish relations…

Does Obama depend on the coming April 24 in the Karabakh issue and
the problem of "genocide"?

24th April is approaching and no doubts that President Obama is
under strong pressure from Armenians as the elections to congress
is this year and democrats need Armenian funds and votes in certain
districts…

German Nobel Prize-Winner Guenter Grass Urging Turkey Recognize

GERMAN NOBEL PRIZE-WINNER GUENTER GRASS URGING TURKEY RECOGNIZE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

Tert.am
15.04.10

German Nobel Prize-winning author Guenter Grass urged Turkey on
Wednesday to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide perpetrated in the
waning days of the Ottoman Empire.

Speaking while on a visit to Istanbul, Grass said such recognition
would be the most important step which Turkey could take in the
direction of joining European Union.

He also recalled German Chancellor Willy Brand who had apologized
Polish people in 1970 for the Holocaust, urging Turkey that it is
high time that Turkish authorities follow suit and apologize the
Armenians living in Armenia and in Turkey.

"Acknowledgment is not easy. But Germany did it. When will the
moment arrive that the crime of the genocide of the Armenians in
1915-1916 will be recognized as fact?" he asked, adding: "I hope it
will be soon."

Grass’s remarks come as the latest in the ongoing controversy over
Turkey’s official stance regarding the Armenian Genocide when upwards
of 1.5 million Armenians were killed and more than 500 were deported.

Turkey, while acknowledging the deaths of Armenians under the then
Ottoman empire, vehemently rejects claims of genocide.

"Obama can pronounce the word "Genocide" in typical contexts, which
will be for us, for you, for everyone but in the same time for no one.

But Turkey is not the one it used to be before and it is not obligatory
for it to make concessions or to recognize the Armenian Genocide,"
L. Alaverdian thinks.

According to her the US president Barak Obama, however, will not
pronounce the word "Genocide" in the context which is expected by
us, as it is not the word of Obama that means recognition for us,
but the decision of the Congress." On the other hand she thinks that
"the pronunciation of the word Genocide by Obama should concern to
the Armenians but the citizens of the US, as it is a promise which
Obama has given to those who have elected him."

If, however, Obama pronounced the word "Genocide", the MP says,
she will congratulate the US citizens as they at last will have a
President who keeps the promises he gives.

The government of Armenia has turned down a bill on luxury tax proposed
by an independent parliament member Viktor Dalakian.

‘Of course, in view of the polarization of the Armenian society and
poverty level, the government is concerned over this issue as much
as Mr. Dalakian, but we did not like the solution proposed by him,’
prime minister Tigran Sarkisian said. He said before developing such a
bill its author should have learned the experience of other countries.

According to Dalakian’s bill, luxury goods are land plots, apartments,
private mansions, cars, money and securities, motor boats, paintings,
sculptures of high value.’ The bill calls for taxing owners of
apartments which are over 40 square meters if less than three people
live in it.

RUBEN SAFRASTIAN: NORMALIZATION OF ARMENIAN-TURKISH INTERSTATE RELATIONS HAS NO ALTERNATIVE

YEREVAN

During the Washington meeting between Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan
and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the sides declared
that they would continue the negotiations over Armenian-Turkish
interstate relations, but it was clear that they maintained their
positions. Ruben Safrastian, a Turkologist, Director of the Institute
of Oriental Studies, expressed this opinion at the April 14 press
conference. According to him, the statements of the Turkish side
show that this country continues to speak to Armenia in a language
of preconditions.

In the opinion of R. Safrastian, the statements that the Armenian
president made in the U.S. clearly demonstrate that Armenia will not
make any concessions over the Armenian Genocide recognition and the
Karabakh problem. "All attempts of the Turkish side to put pressure
on Armenia in this direction have been futile so far and will remain
as such," he said.

In his words, the second important conclusion to be drawn from S.

Sargsyan’s statements is that Armenia and the Diaspora have acted
and will act jointly regarding the problems of the Armenians all over
the world, including the Genocide recognition.

Speaking about the ratification process of Armenia-Turkey protocols,
R. Safrastian noted that it is still at a deadlock or is frozen.

According to him, even the Turkish press said that "Turkey is
not prepared to ratify the protocols in the parliament now". Yet
R. Safrastian expressed confidence that the normalization of
Armenian-Turkish interstate relations has no alternative and sooner
or later the deadlock will be overcome.

Vikram Sampath’s "My Name is Gauhar Jaan" captures the life of
feisty and eminent Hindustani classical vocalist Gauhar Jaan. India’s
first vocalist to record on the gramophone. The book was launched by
Pandit Jasraj

"My name is Gauhar Jaan!" The earliest recordings of Indian music are
distinguished by this high-pitched and flirtatious announcement, made
towards the end of the rendition. This declaration would then epitomize
a milestone in the history of Indian classical music, one that would
change forever its content, structure and style of presentation.

Author Vikram Sampath in his second book "My Name is Gauhar Jaan: The
Life and Times of a Musician, captures the life and times of feisty,
colourful and eminent Hindustani classical vocalist Gauhar Jaan who
was India’s first vocalist and musician to record on the gramophone.

Sangeet Martand, Padmavibhushan Pandit Jasraj, to launch the book in
Bangalore on April 12, 2010 at Alliance Francaise.

Speaking about the book, Pandit Jasraj said, " It is so interesting
that I feel that any music lover who gets his or her hands on the book
will read it through in one sitting." He reminisced that many thumris
composed by Gauhar Jaan like Kaise Yeh Dhoom Machayi Arrey Kanhaiya
Re as well as thumris sung by her like Jiyaa Mein Laagi Aaan Baan,
are still sung today by many across India. However, in most cases
the singers aren’t even aware that they are singing her compositions.

Vikram is doing just that, for people to reconise the thumris as
those that originally came from Gauhar Jaan.

The musical scene in India at the turn of the 20th century witnessed
tumultuous changes. The traditional custodians of the art form-the
devadasis down South and the nautch girls/tawaifs up North, had for
generations nurtured the art form. But successive laws passed against
their ilk, ensured that many of them died in abject poverty or were
faced with the abominations of the flesh trade. But, Gauhar Jaan
emerged on the sheer strength of their art and personalities.

Gauhar Jaan’s was the first Indian voice to be recorded in 1902. In
her illustrious career she cut close to 600 records. Gramophone
Company’s India agent Frederick William Gaisberg decided that she
would be the first Indian voice that he would record. He writes
glowing details about her flamboyance and appearance, as well as of
the wonder with which he heard her sing like a dream on his 3.5 min
long gramophone discs. Most of these discs end with a high-pitched
flirtatious announcement by the singer herself – "My name is Gauhar
Jaan" she screams out in most of these early records!

This book traces the story of her life with all its attendant myths,
legends and folklore, some of which are recorded, some apocryphal; as
well as the times during which she lived and created exquisite music.

According to Vikram, who says’s he could have well been possessed by
the ghost of Gauhar Jaan as he put together her life over two years
with intensive research.

"I discovered Gauhar Jaan originally during the research of my first
book, "Splendours of Royal Mysore: The Untold Story of the Wodeyars",
where I discovered she spent the last years of her life. It was
fascinating to see the life she lived and the contribution she made to
Hindustani Classical Music, "according to Vikram, the male singers at
the time were superstitious of recording their voice. Harbouring fears
that they might lose their voice once it was recorded. Gauhar Jaan,
with her flamboyant irreverence for these beliefs, paved the way, with
many women singers following her. This shift to technology ensured that
women performing artists could emerge from the clutches of their often
abusive rich patrons. Born in Azamgarh as Eileen Angelina Yeoward,
an Armenian Christian who later converted to Islam, Gauhar Jaan was
a nationwide celebrity in her times. Gauhar’s life is replete with
numerous such anecdotes. She is touted to be among the few people in
Calcutta in those days that flouted Government regulations and went
around the city in a four horse-driven buggy, for which she even paid
a penalty of Rs.1000 a day to the Viceroy! She was even known to have
thrown a lavish party worth Rs.20,000 when her cat produced a litter
of kittens! Her photograph is supposed to have (even) appeared on
match boxes (of those days) which were manufactured in Austria!

But as everything that goes up also comes down, Gauhar had her fall
too. She was duped by her near and dear ones, had cases filed against
her in the courts and she lost most of her property and wealth in
Calcutta. At this point, the Maharaja of the princely state of Mysore
in South India decided to invite her as a state guest to Mysore in
1928 and she was given a mansion and an annual pension there. An
emotionally broken Gauhar, whose personal life and love life were in
ruins, sought her final refuge in Mysore. But the tragedies of her
life ensured she didn’t live long and the first Empress of Indian
music breathed her last in Mysore in 1930.

Bangalore based author Vikram Sampath is an Engineer/mathematician
and MBA by educational background is currently a Financial Analyst
with Hewlett Packard. "This allows me to go off on my numerous
research travels, to different parts of the country." His first book,
"Splendours of Royal Mysore: The Untold Story of the Wodeyars" has
won critical acclaim. The interest for this book was piqued with the
popular series "the Sword of Tipu Sultan", when he was all of 12-13
years old. He was perplexed that the Wodeyar’s were shown in very
poor light, which he would much later prove wrong, with his book. .

With messages from eminent classical musicians of India like Pandit
Jasraj, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and Pandit. Arvind Parikh, the book
includes a CD of select original sound tracks of Gauhar Jaan’s music.
