A restless, kaleidoscopic view of an empire's legacy
Journalist Alev Scott's book 'Ottoman Odyssey' traverses the cultural and social history of the region to explain the present.

by Peter Lewis Correspondent

The Ottoman Empire stretched from Baghdad to Algiers, Mecca to Budapest, Benghazi to Tbilisi before it was dismantled in the wake of World War I. It left its mark, not only on present day Turkey, but also throughout the region. Journalist Alev Scott, whose mother is Turkish and father is British, set out to explore the empire's legacy.

Halfway into her project, Scott was barred from reentering Turkey, where she had been living for a number of years. Her reporting had run afoul of the current Turkish regime. "My entry ban motivated me to go out and explore the ways in which the empire shaped the histories of people," she writes – putting the odyssey in Ottoman Odyssey. She roams through 11 countries, "asking questions about forced migration, genocide, exile, diaspora, collective memory and identity, not just about religious coexistence."

Under the empire, non-Muslims were allowed to organize their own law courts, schools, and places of worship "in return for paying 'infidel' taxes and accepting a role as second-class citizens: a system of exploitative tolerance that allowed diversity to flourish for centuries." Such was not to be the fate of modern Turkey, with what Scott witnesses as the state's "fierce nationalism and a racism derived from the long-held belief that Turks are genetically superior to Arabs, and, by extension, anyone with dark skin."

Scott's writing is restless and kaleidoscopic, hurrying from anecdote to anecdote, insight to insight. One minute you are in Armenia with her, driving past the ruins of a village that was toppled in the 1988 earthquake and in the next you are passing a village inhabited by Yazidis, a persecuted minority who were branded devil-worshippers. This type of minutiae peppers the travelogue.

As for the Armenian slaughter of the early 20th century, which nations around the world have condemned as genocide, "It is the one thing that almost all Turks, regardless of religion, background or political alliance, agree on: the genocide is a myth." This denial, Scott suggests, in rooted in the Turkish educational system, which is dictated by the state.

As Scott travels on – to the Dodecanese islands, the Balkans, the Levant – she experiences and writes compellingly of those serendipitous moments of travel. After being denied permission to return to her apartment in Istanbul, she writes, "I can be 'of' Turkey while I am not in it. Geography does not confer identity. It makes us homesick, but it does not define us."

Speaking Turkish is a great pleasure for her and a thread that ties together these far-flung journeys. "Again and again on my travels, I saw this – language is the key to a shared culture, and to understanding people." On the other hand, she acknowledges the many barriers: "I thought about people who lack this privilege to cross borders freely, about  those who have never left home, those who can never return, and those who identify with an ancestral land they have never seen." She continues, "The more I travelled, the more powerful and yet obscure I found the emotional connection between geography and identity."

For all the empire's scope, Scott brings an intimacy to the proceedings. This is true not only because of the family memories she recalls, but also because of the tight focus she keeps on her subjects. She's attentive to all their idiosyncrasies.

Hypocrisy, Thy Name Is Anti-ARFism

Garen Yegparian

BY GAREN YEGPARIAN

It seems like the Soviet Era is reaching out from the grave and grabbing the Republic of Armenia. The level and style of ARF criticism is very reminiscent of those sad times. It is pathetic and, at best, unhelpful to the ongoing political development of the country’s polity.

The latest manifestation of this ridiculous stridency might be said to have begun with the attack on Hrant Markarian, the former ARF Bureau Reperesentative, while walking with his grandchildren. A participant in the fray was Vartan/Vardan Haroutiunian who incited the group of attackers to violence. This guy himself got beaten up a few days ago. Now, everyone is all a twitter about the ARF being a terrorist group. There have even been references to the Dro/Tro incident of the 1990s in which the RoA’s then president, Levon Der Bedrosian brought extremely inflated, if not patently false, charges against many ARF members as a means of eliminating the party as a political competitor.

These two examples alone ought to be enough to substantiate the Soviet flavor of the anti-ARF melee besetting the country. It was very popular for the Soviets to try to tarnish the ARF as a gun-wielding bunch of reckless terrorists. Levon Der Bedrosian is a product of the Soviet system and used what he had been taught against the ARF. So, when I encounter this faux-criticism of the ARF today, I recoil in disgust and concern for the country.

What makes it all worse is the unbelievable heights of hypocrisy achieved by the “criticisms” voiced against the ARF. At least some of the commentary stems form the fact that a few dozen ARF members reported to the police and asserted “I did it” in reference to the attack on Haroutiunian. This piece of political protest has been twistedly represented as “proof” that the ARF is violent and should be shunned.

Of course, the most obvious question that arises is: where were these voices of condemnation when Markarian’s attack was incited by Haroutiunian? Is not incitement to violence and battery just as contemptible as the actual act? Isn’t hate speech and incitement to violence prohibited and punishable in most modern countries?

Then we have the example of Nigol Pashinian’s chest thumping demand of law enforcement last summer to “lay them down on the asphalt”, referring to those he deemed culpable of releasing a surreptitiously taped phone conversation. Even worse, he repeated that comment (disguised in the form of saying “I don’t want to repeat what I said before about laying people down on the asphalt”) just a few days ago in the context of the fracas over the Markarian attack. Why is he not the target of the same anti-violence vitriol?

Also the examples are two incidents related to a newly formed political party, Adekvad, described in a piece by Ani Mejlumian as conservative. One of its prominent members, Narek Malian was attacked, in March, by a group of pro-Pashinian students. In May, a member of the Civil Contract party, Arthur Ispirian, claimed that members of Adekvad had attacked him. Where was the hue-and-cry over these acts of political violence?

The other telling, and recent, example of the anti-ARF hysteria being whipped up is a pair of public gatherings/rallies. One was called by Nigol Pashinian who demanded “the people” barricade courthouse entrances, the response to which was a few hundred people, cumulatively, showing up at different locations. The other was the ARF’s recent really calling on Pashinian to get serious, attended by some four or five thousand people. Not much was made of the meagre response to the prime minister’s call. Yet, using a picture of the ARF’s rally site taken BEFORE the gathering started, which shows only people setting up for the event, there is much ado about how “poorly” attended it was. Can anyone spell d-o-u-b-l-e s-t-a-n-d-a-r-d?

The double-standards and hypocrisy underlying the current criticism of the ARF is all the evidence needed to show that this is all just political jockeying, devoid of substance, and more discrediting of the critics than of the ARF. This is not to say that the ARF is perfect. Nor do I expect any group/party, especially the ARF that is so thoroughly engaged and active in the life of our nation, not to be criticized. But please, let’s be reasonable (if not constructive) when critiquing what any political actor does. Otherwise, we’ll descend into a cacophony of pointless, endless, and mutually destructive recrimination.

Those engaged in this type of anti-ARF criticism for its own sake, especially if they think they are helping Pashinian, are on the wrong path. They are discrediting the hope and possibilities of the movement that brought him to power.

Let’s all speak out against this type of political pseudo-discourse. Today, it’s the ARF, tomorrow it could be Pashinian, or someone else, who is the target.

YEREVAN, JUNE 6, ARMENPRESS. The meeting between Armenian Premier Nikol Pashinyan and Russian President Vladimir Putin has kicked off in Konstantinovsky Palace, St. Petersburg city, Russia. The correspondent of ARMENPRESS reports Putin said after shaking hands and being photographed, “I am very glad to welcome you once again, this time in St. Petersburg. The economic forum of St. Petersburg is a good platform for meeting with partners and discussing economic issues. There is no need to discuss bilateral issues, since we do it regularly. Russia is a leading partner for Armenia in terms of trade and many other directions, which shows the good relations between the two countries”.

Nikol Pashinyan told Vladimir Putin that he is also glad for the meeting. “I am very glad to meet you again in St. Petersburg. Last time we met in Nur-Sultan, while we first met a year ago and we had numerous meetings during this one year. Our relations develop steadily. We have not only active bilateral cooperation, but also in the sidelines of the EAEU, CIS and CSTO. I am very glad we have the opportunity to fully develop our relations in the these directions. The economic growth of our country amounted to 9.2% in April. This is a good index not only for Armenia, but also for the EAEU, since our economic achievements are mainly conditioned by our cooperation in the sidelines of the EAEU. This year we have recorded also a significant rise in the visits of Russian tourists to Armenia. Today the Russian language can be heard in any touristic circle. I ask Russian tourists how they feel in Armenia, and they answer that they feel good in Armenia, and it’s obvious that more and more tourists come to Armenia and such interactions can foster the development of our political and economic relations”, Pashinyan said.

On June 6-7, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is in Saint Petersburg on a working visit to attend the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum where he will deliver a speech. Within the framework of the visit, Prime Minister Pashinyan will meet with leaders of different countries, representatives of governments and heads of international organizations. Nikol Pashinyan will meet with the representatives of the Armenian community of Saint Petersburg and will give a press conference.

Sports: Baku stadium opened for free to fill seats

The Times, UK
Baku stadium open for free to fill seats

by  Martyn Ziegler, Chief Sports Reporter

Authorities in Baku ordered the turnstiles to be opened during the first half of the Europa League final so that some of the empty seats would be filled. The decision, taken without Uefa's authorisation, is believed to have come about because the authorities in Azerbaijan were embarrassed by the thousands of empty seats on television pictures that were seen around the world on Wednesday night.

Chelsea and Arsenal had both returned about half of the 6,000 tickets that each club had been given to sell to fans. The lack of demand was put down to the distance that supporters had to travel, the difficulty in finding direct and convenient flights and the cost. Charter flights laid on by Thomas Cook Sport were priced at almost £1,000.

The empty seats and lack of atmosphere inside the Olympic Stadium in Baku was referenced several times by TV commentators but, after half an hour of the match, many of the seats suddenly filled.

One Arsenal fan told

The Times

: "We were in the Arsenal corner and there were a lot of empty seats and suddenly after about 30 minutes lots of local people arrived, including some kids, and they had been given Arsenal flags to wave."

An employee of Uefa who had been working at the match said that the decision had been taken against the wishes of the governing body's people on the ground but that they had been powerless to prevent it.

Uefa, which has come under sustained criticism for choosing Baku as the venue for the final, is understood to have launched an investigation into the action by the authorities in Azerbaijan. The Olympic Stadium will host four matches in Euro 2020 next year, including one of the quarter-finals.

There has also been criticism of Uefa after the Arsenal forward Henrikh Mkhitaryan's decision not to travel to the final because of political conflict between his home country Armenia and Azerbaijan. There were reports that police in Baku were checking Arsenal fans' shirts to see if they had Mkhitarayan's name on the back.

Rosena Allin-Khan, Labour's shadow sports minister, has called for the Euro 2020 hosting decision to be re-considered. She described the Europa League final as "a mess from the start" and claimed that fans had been "harassed" by police.

She said: "It is completely unacceptable. When Uefa chose Baku, they picked it with one eye on their bank account – with not a care in the world for the fan experience."

Aleksander Ceferin, the Uefa president, insisted on Wednesday that there would be no review of its decision to award Baku the hosting rights for Euro 2020.

Digital Platforms for Connecting Event Organizers, Designers, and Teachers

Earlier this spring, the Entrepreneurship and Product Innovation Center (EPIC) of the American University of Armenia (AUA) welcomed the fourth batch of venture startup teams to the EPIC business incubator program.

In the 12-week program, the enrolled teams will receive support from seasoned entrepreneurs, AUA faculty, and alumni. By making use of EPIC’s numerous resources, the teams will strengthen their business concepts in order to launch their new products and services into the market.

EPIC proudly introduces three of the nine startups that were accepted into the program this spring: Eventor, Hooop, and BeTheTeacher. These ventures are respectively designed to offer digital platforms for connecting event organizers, designers, and teachers.

Reaching out to AUA’s Network of Supporters and Friends

If you know of any potential partners or collaborators with experience in any of these industries who would like to contribute to the success of these teams, EPIC would welcome hearing from you. Please contact EPIC at [email protected].

A brief profile of each startup is presented below:

Eventor is a platform with a database of service providers that enables quick, effective, and low-cost planning of parties and other events. When planning birthdays for their children, parents can organize the event by simply choosing from trending all-inclusive packages that include venue, catering, cake, decorations, and entertainment.

Hooop is a recruiting and employment platform for digital designers and businesses. Currently, designers search for clients and consulting opportunities while firms and businesses look for outsourcing design specialists for different tasks. Hooop will create a two-sided digital marketplace for designers and businesses that eases the process of finding needed specialists while creating a mutually beneficial market in the creative field.

BeTheTeacher is an online tool for teachers and instructors to support lesson-planning. Currently, teachers spend too much time preparing classroom lessons from scratch. Additionally, quality teaching materials that support the inclusion of all learners are not easily accessible in Armenia and elsewhere. The lesson plan generator will suggest a wide variety of objectives, methods, and activities for teachers to choose from. Teachers will save time, create engaging and fun lessons, be supported with inclusive teaching strategies, and be able to create and sell their content for use by other instructors.

ACNIS reView #16, 2019:

ACNIS reView #15, 2019: Political metamorphosis in Ukraine

Editorial

26 APRIL 2019
Political metamorphosis in Ukraine
The April 21 presidential elections in Ukraine caused a shock not only in this country, but throughout the world. Two circumstances contributed to this: the victory of the “commoner” – the showman and a high percentage of the votes he received (73%). In the country, in fact, there was a velvet revolution. Observers claim that “without any exaggeration, the triumphant victory of the showman Vladimir Zelensky at the presidential elections in Ukraine is not just a victory over the current president, Petro Poroshenko. It is also an unconditional victory over the whole political class, over the system, which after this victory literally lies in ruins. Indeed, in the first round, Zelensky, in addition to Poroshenko, defeated many experienced well-known politicians who, according to the prominent journalist Vitaly Portnikov, even a few months before his nomination had the chance to make it to the second round of elections.
Of course, such election results are related to the Maidan 2014 events. Unlike Armenia, in which the velvet revolution of 2018 took place, the "oligarchs' club" which usurped the government system – the Republican Party of Armenia, was pushed aside from the levers of state power, in Ukraine the people could not use the results of the overthrow of former President Yanukovich. The Ukrainian oligarchs, who supported the citizens' protests, took advantage of it. In the very first presidential election, one of them, Petro Poroshenko, won in a revolutionary wave, while all the others were conveniently placed in various positions in the regions. The energy of Maidan was dispersed, and the country captured by the oligarchy plunged into deep chaos. The economy collapsed, and Ukraine was actually dismembered.
One might have expected that after years the people of Ukraine would take “revenge” over the oligarchs. As Zelensky, who won the election, said himself, he is not a politician – he is a simple person, a product of the Poroshenko system, a person who came to destroy this system. And although many in Ukraine point out that this time, the oligarchs turned to the side of Zelensky in time, it is difficult to clearly predict their next success in the new alignment of forces. Again, unlike in Armenia, where during the year in the early parliamentary elections, the deputies of the former ruling regime were ousted from parliament, the new president of Ukraine will have to deal with the opposing members of the parties that lost in the current presidential election. In Armenia, the smooth removal of opponents from the parliament and the appointment of the “people's” prime minister with their own hands became possible as a result of widespread popular participation. There is no such resource for the elected president of Ukraine.
In any case, the fate of the new government in Ukraine should be decided by October of this year, when the parliamentary elections will be held. Zelensky, to fulfill his promises to the people, will have to “fight” in two directions – against the oligarchs and against the current parliament. And this will have to be done against the background of continuing disagreements with Russia and, for the time being, incomprehensible relations with the countries of the West.
At the same time, it cannot be denied that the nature of political transformations in Ukraine may affect the development of processes in the entire post-Soviet space.

‘Hrashq’ Kicks Off Sports Program for Armenian-American Special Needs Athletes

Hrashq flyer

GLENDALE—The Homenetmen “Hrashq” chapter held its first official sports practice for Armenian-American athletes with special needs. The event took place on February 24, at the Pacific Community Center and Park in Glendale, California.

The games practiced included basketball, soccer, and track and field. Each practice was administered by trained volunteer coaches, headed by Aileen Amirayan, Adaptive Physical Education Teacher for the La Mirada School District.

Approximately 30 athletes of varying ages and abilities participated, matched on a one-on-one basis with 30 volunteer coaches comprised of Homenetmen members as well as members of the Armenian Youth Federation—Western United States San Fernando Valley “Sardarabad” chapter’s “Pyunik” program, which has organized bi-weekly basketball practices since 2014.

The facilities provide ample parking, state-of-the-art courts and fields, as well as easy access for all to participate in the practices. Following the first practice, athletes and their families enjoyed a pizza party to celebrate the start of the program.
