Pashinyan Slams Erdogan Who Said Armenian Deportations Were ‘Reasonable’

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan slammed Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan urged the international community to respond to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, who said on April 24 that the deportation of Armenian during the time spanning the Armenian Genocide “was the most reasonable action that could have been taken.” Pashinyan called the Turkish leader’s remarks “extreme hate speech” and “justification of the murder of a nation.”

“The relocation of the Armenian gangs and their supporters, who massacred the Muslim people, including women and children, in eastern Anatolia, was the most reasonable action that could be taken in such a period,” said Erdogan, who also posted this message on his Twitter account.

“We see that those who attempt to lecture us on human rights over the Armenian issue themselves have a bloody past,” he added, accusing the French of committing genocide in Africa.

“Calling victims of the Armenian Genocide—the Ottoman Empire’s entire Armenian population, which was sent to death marches—‘Armenian gangs & their supporters,’ killing 1.5 million [people] and justifying it as a ‘most reasonable action’ is not just a new high in denialism, but justification of a nation’s murder,” said Pashinyan in a Twitter post in response to Erdogan.

“Above all, doing this on April 24 is an ultimate insult to the Armenian people and to humanity, extreme hate speech by Erdogan personally. The world must speak out,” Pashinyan added.

Theater Review: ‘A Journey of Angels’

BY ALIQUE KELECHIAN

GLENDALE—The cast of A Journey of Angels presented an astonishing musical about the Armenian Genocide that left viewers speechless. The musical, which was performed on Thursday, April 18, explored many different aspects of the genocide, as well as the Armenian people’s struggle to survive. The play depicted the genocide through multiple perspectives: a parent, a child, a sister, a husband, and a grandmother.

A Journey of Angels focused mainly on one young girl’s journey, as she realizes she must turn to her faith in times of trouble. As fourteen year old Flora is forced out of her home and away from her loved ones, she learns that as long as she keeps the memory of her family alive in her heart, they will always be with her.

Based on Dr. Kay Mouradian’s documentary, “My Mother’s Voice,” the musical was written by Brent Beerman, directed by Kay Cole, and the soundtrack was written by Kathy Chaplar. The documentary reflected Dr. Mouradian’s great-grandmother’s survival of the genocide as a young woman.

“The message of the play is a simple one of strength and courage,” said Eric Kursinski, an actor of the play who played the roles of Reverend Eskijian, Captain Khounshid, and Captain of the Turkish troops. “The play expresses that one can make it through the lowest parts of their life as long as they hold on to hope.”

Amy Earhart, playing the role of Flora’s mother, Arpi, believed the message to be that, “there is still love in failure, it does not mean that she [Arpi] didn’t try to save her family, or die trying… and there’s a lot of value in that.”

The musical started as a small idea which eventually grew into a local High School play. It finally reached Preparations for the play are near completion, and is anticipated to be staged on April 24th, 2020.

Prime Minister Pashinyan Questions US 'Nil' Reaction to Democratic Changes in Armenia

YEREVAN, March 28 (Sputnik) – Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on Thursday that the United States had had absolutely no reaction to the democratic transformation in Armenia and questioned why this was the case.

"The United States has long been one of the most ardent defenders of democracy in the world. I would like to ask how the United States responded to the unprecedented democratic changes in Armenia? While this was a democratic transformation in its essence and content, and no one should be in doubt about it. Its reaction, and I also told this to American representatives, was nil in practice. Why?" Pashinyan said, addressing the country's parliament.

Pashinyan's remark came as a response to the criticism by Arman Babajanyan, a lawmaker from the Bright Armenia party, who accused the country's government of continuing a one-sided foreign policy and said that Armenia's relations with the United States and the European Union were not developing as they ought to. Babajanyan also criticized the Armenian humanitarian mission being sent to Syria.

According to Pashinyan, Armenian combat engineers and doctors were sent to Syria based on the country's "historical mission."

Head of the Russian Defense Ministry's Center for Syrian Reconciliation, Lt. Gen. Sergei Solomatin, said that on February 8, an 83-strong humanitarian mission from Armenia began working in Syria. The mission is engaged in clearing mines and providing medical assistance to the residents of the city of Aleppo. Russia has been providing logistical support to the Armenian mission.

Culture: Today marks great Armenian architect Alexander Tamanian’s birthday

Culture 13:52 04/03/2019 Armenia

March 4 marks the 141st birthday anniversary of renowned Soviet Armenian architect Alexander Tamanian, who was the author of the general plan of the Armenian capital, Yerevan. Up to now, numerous buildings designed by Tamanian adorn the city and preserve the memory about the great architect.

Tamanian was born in the Russian city of Yekaterinodar (now Krasnodar) in 1878 to the family of banker Hovhhannes Mironovich. He graduated from the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1904. His works portrayed sensitive and artistic neoclassical trends popular in those years. Some of his early works included the mansion of V. P. Kochubey in Tsarskoye Selo, 1911–1912; the house of Prince S. A. Scherbatov in Novinsky Boulevard in Moscow, 1911–1913; the village railway employees housing and the tuberculosis sanatorium at the Prozorovskaya station (now Kratovo) near Moscow, 1913–1923; central workshops of Kazan railway in Lyubertsy, 1916.

He became an Academician of Architecture in 1914, being elected as the Vice-President of the Academy of Arts in 1917.

In 1923 Tamanian moved to Yerevan, heading the new construction effort in the republic. He was the chief engineer of the local Council of People's Commissars and was a member of the CEC of Soviet Armenia (1925–1936), sponsored the construction industry, designed the layouts of towns and villages including Leninakan (now Gyumri) (1925), Stepanakert (1926), Nor-Bayazet (now Gavar) and Ahta-ahpara (both in 1927), Etchmiadzin (1927–1928), and others. Tamanian created the first general plan of the modern city of Yerevan which was approved in 1924.

Tamanian's style was instrumental in transforming what was essentially a small provincial city into the modern Armenian capital, a major industrial and cultural center. Neoclassicism dominated his designs but Tamanian also implemented a national flavor (red linings of tuff, traditional decorative carvings on stone etc.).

Among his most famous designs in Yerevan are the hydroelectric station (1926), the Opera and Ballet Theater named after A. Spendiarian (1926–1953), the Republic Square (1926–1941) and others. He also played a major role in the development of restoration projects of historical landmarks in the country, chairing the Committee for the Protection of Historic Monuments in Armenia.

Tamanian was married to Camilla Edwards, a member of the Benois family. Their sons Gevorg (Georgi) and Yulius Tamanians also became noted architects and continued their father's work.

Tamanian died in Yerevan on February 20, 1936 and is buried at the Komitas Pantheon which is located in the city center of Yerevan.
