Vayots Dzor Wine Route seeks to develop wine tourism in Armenia

PanArmenian, Armenia
Aug 10 2018

PanARMENIAN.Net – In Yerevan, VayotsDzor Wine Route was launched by My Armenia Program. The initiative was brought to life with joint efforts of My Armenia and five wineries from the region – Old Bridge, Trinity Canyon Vineyards, Getnatoun, Areni and HinAreni, as a result of participation in the World Wine Forum 2016 in Georgia. During the event, the new webpage (vayotsdzorwineroute.com) of wine route and brochure were presented, which include information about member wineriesandVayotsDzor region’s tourism experiences.

Armenia, which has a millennial history of viticulture and wine making, today has prerequisites to develop a new business culture – wine tourism, along with traditional wine making. The main goal of VayotsDzor wine route development is to present Armenian wine and promote tourism in the region, contributing to the sustainable economic development.

In attendance at the event were the Mission Director of USAID Armenia, Deborah Grieser, My Armenia Program Chief of Party, Sisak Mkhitaryan, and the owners of the five wineries that are member of the VayotsDzor Wine Route.

– During a study tour to Georgia organized by My Armenia Program, a group of Armenian wine makers realized that the traditions of wine making in their area could become a profitable business, which inspired them to create the wine route. With the support of My Armenia these wine makers from VayotsDzor learned how to start a wine tourism business and be competitive. The Program trained local guides, created marketing materials, including brochures, advertising clips, attractive wine bottle labels. The wine map was created in cooperation with «One Armenia». The road signs will be placed inVayotsDzor. I am sure that the wine route will engage more winemakers from other regions of Armenia very soon,- said DeborahGrieser.

– The My Armenia Program continuously supports the creation and development of cultural heritage touristic experiences.

This time VayotsDzor is in our focus. The wine route is a unique experience for the visitors to meet the local big and small winemakers and taste the Armenian wine, with the narration of the history of the wine making in this area. Our goal is to make this region more attractive, so that the number of visitors increases, bringing the tourism services and trade to growth, thus developing sustainable income for the regional talented people, – said Sisak Mkhitaryan.

– The development of a wine route in Armenia will not only attract more visitors to our region, but also will give a big opportunity to all of us to present the wine making history of Armenia. From now on, by joint efforts we will present the ancient and modern wine making techniques, the different types of Armenian wines, and similarities of wine making in family businesses and large factories, – shared Ashot Khalatyan, Old Bridge Winery representative.

«My Armenia Program» organized a visit to VayotsDzorWine Route for the local media the day before the launch event.Eight local media representatives had the opportunity to visit five wineries involved in the wine route, interview the winemakers and broadcast from the wineries.

Armenian Authorities Broke Promise Not to Persecute Political Predecessors – Lavrov

Armenian Authorities Broke Promise Not to Persecute Political
Predecessors - Lavrov

MOSCOW, July 31 (Sputnik) - The current developments in Armenia
contradict the statements by the new leadership of the country about
the refusal to persecute its political predecessors, Russian Foreign
Minister Sergey Lavrov told journalists on Tuesday.

"Russia, as an ally of Yerevan, has always been interested in the
stability of the Armenian state, therefore what is happening there
worries us, including from the point of view of the tasks of normal
functioning of CIS organizations in which Armenia participates,"
Lavrov said.

"The recent events clearly destroy such a positive attitude, and run
counter to the recent statements by the new leadership of Armenia that
it has no intentions to organize the persecution of its predecessors
for political reasons," Lavrov stressed.

Former Armenian President Robert Kocharian and Secretary General of
the Collective Security Treaty Organization Yuri Khachaturov have been
recently charged with violating constitutional order by suppressing
the 2008 protests in Yerevan.

Former Armenian President Arrested

Armenia -- Former President Robert Kocharian gives an interview to Yerkir Media
TV channel, Yerevan, 26Jul2018.

Armenia’s former President Robert Kocharian was arrested late on Friday after
being charged in connection with the deadly breakup of opposition protests
staged following a disputed presidential election in 2008.

A district court in Yerevan allowed the Special Investigative Service (SIS) to
keep Kocharian under arrest pending investigation into the crackdown which left
ten people dead.

The court’s decision was communicated to the press by his lawyers shortly after
midnight. One of them, Ruben Sahakian, said they will appeal against it. He and
the other attorney, Aram Orbelian, declined to comment further, saying that
they will hold a news conference on Saturday.

Kocharian was remanded in pre-trial custody after a lengthy court hearing
attended by him. According to Sahakian, the ex-president made no statements in
the courtroom and reacted to the court ruling “very calmly.”

The SIS on Thursday charged Kocharian with “overthrowing constitutional order”
in the wake of the February 2008 election official results of which gave
victory to his preferred successor, Serzh Sarkisian. The main opposition
presidential candidate, Levon Ter-Petrosian, rejected those results as
fraudulent and held nonstop demonstrations in the Armenian capital, demanding a
rerun of the ballot.

barricaded area in Yerevan in the wake of a disputed presidential election, 1
March 2008.

Security forces broke up those protests on March 1-2, 2008. Eight protesters
and two police servicemen died as a result.

Kocharian angrily rejected the accusations as politically motivated and
“fabricated” in televised remarks aired later on Thursday. He defended the
legality of his decision to declare a state of emergency and order Armenian
army units into central Yerevan late on March 1, 2008. He also said that the
coup charges ran counter to the decisions of Armenia’s Central Election
Commission and the Constitutional Court that validated the official election
outcome.

The SIS’s decision to prosecute Kocharian was condemned by Sarkisian’s
Republican Party but welcomed by Ter-Petrosian’s associates. Relatives of some
of the protesters killed in the unrest also welcomed it.

The SIS levelled the same accusations against Yuri Khachaturov, a retired army
general who was Armenia’s deputy defense minister during the dramatic
post-election developments. But unlike Kocharian, Khachaturov was granted bail
by the district court. His lawyer told reporters after midnight that the
ex-general, who serves as secretary general of the Collective Security Treaty
Organization (CSTO), will pay 5 million drams ($10,400) to avoid arrest for now.

Armenia - Opposition leader Nikol Pashinian addresses protesters that
barricaded themselves in central Yerevan, 1 March 2008.

Shortly after he swept to power in May, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian named a
new head of the SIS and told the law-enforcement agency to finally complete its
protracted investigation into what was the worst street violence in Armenia’s
history.

Pashinian played a key role in Ter-Petrosian’s 2007-2008 opposition movement.
In particular, he was the main speaker at a rally held in downtown Yerevan late
on March 1, 2008 as security forces clashed with some protesters several
hundred meters away. He subsequently spent about two years in prison for
organizing “mass disturbances,” a charge he denied as politically motivated.

Kocharian has repeatedly defended the post-election crackdown, saying that it
prevented a violent of seizure of power by the Ter-Petrosian-led opposition.
Earlier this year, he blamed Pashinian for the bloodshed.

Pashinyan: The lion`s share of financing the "velvet revolution" in Armenia came from Russia

Yerevan July 27

Naira Badalyan. The lion's share of financing the "velvet revolution" in Armenia came from Russia. The Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan at a meeting stated this with businessmen of Armenian origin in St. Petersburg.

In general, according to the prime minister, the revolution did not require large cash injections. However, even according to approximate calculations, according to Pashinyan, Armenians living in the Russian Federation transferred most of the money.

At the same time, as the head of the Armenian government and the leader of the "velvet revolution" pointed out, he remembered how during the pedestrian course he received a call from Sakhalin (RF, Ed.) And reported that they transferred the money. It was "the first money," he said. "On the whole, the Armenian revolution was financed by 90% by the Diaspora, 50% of which, if not more, from Russia," he explained. "Money transfers, as Pashinyan noted, were also from the United States and Europe. "We will probably publish the geography of funding "And not only people with money transferred money – people transferred money from their salaries, and this is the uniqueness of our revolution." The people decided their problem and the people should be grateful," Pashinyan said.

During the meeting some Russian businessmen complained to the prime minister about the unlawful actions of their partners from Armenia. In particular, one of them said that the Republican deputy, owner of the Jermuk group Ashot Arsenyan "stole" his conveyor line and sold it without the knowledge of the entrepreneur. "In addition, I bought a plant in the village of Areni, and then discovered that I do not have documents on the documents, but if the situation changes, I will come to Armenia, study the market and, trusting you, invest 3 billion drams (about $ 6 million ) ", – promised the entrepreneur.

Another businessman complained about the actions of the Republican deputy, owner of the "Alex Grig" concern Samvel Aleksanyan, who, according to him, entered into a share with him during the construction of the sugar plant in Sevan and ruined him. "But now I am ready to rehabilitate the enterprise, if I am at least temporarily exempted from VAT," the entrepreneur noted. Prime Minister Pashinyan promised to assist businessmen in solving their problems within the framework of the law.

In early June, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan posted on his Facebook page an account of the funds that he donated during the "velvet revolution". The "pre-full" list consists of 48 pages of A4 format. The minimum amount contributed to the revolution was 5 drams. The largest transfer was the amount of 1 million 955 thousand drams (4135 dollars). As a result, the organizers of the change of power donated 73 million 589 thousand 894 drams (about 152 thousand 559 dollars), 51 910 dollars (about 25 million 20 thousand 620 drams), 14 thousand 344 euros (about 8 million 91 thousand 357 drams), 2 million 48 thousand 408 rubles (16 million 141 thousand 455 drams). In total, the amount amounted to 122 million 843 thousand 326 drams (about 254 thousand 861 dollars).

168: ‘Armenia has much to say and clarify in EEU’ – political analysts weigh in on Pashinyan’s upcoming Russia visit

Category
World

Armenia has a lot to say and clarify at the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) Intergovernmental Council session, according to Ruben Mehrabyan – expert at the Armenian Center of Political and International Research.

According to Mehrabyan the issues will mainly concern the difference of the governance systems of Armenia and the remaining EEU countries.

“Other EEU countries are presidential systems, while Armenia is a parliamentary system, nevertheless Nikol Pashinyan, who had previously taken part in the heads of state summit, is now going to the heads of government assembly. There are really important things to say here, because we understand that there are huge gaps and elementary issues from the past which the Armenian side is unable to solve until now,” he said.

Earlier on July 25, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said he will depart for St. Petersburg, Russia on July 26 to participate in the Eurasian Economic Union’s Intergovernmental Council (Heads of government).

“As you know, due to the status obtained after the constitutional changes the Prime Minister of Armenia is involved in the EEU Supreme Economic Council, in the heads of state format, and this issue is solved also de jure, meaning Armenia will be continued being represented by the Prime Minister here.

But the legal regulations of the EEU Intergovernmental Council’s work haven’t yet been complied with the new text of the Armenian Constitution and in case of my non-participation in the Prime Ministerial Council session decision couldn’t have been adopted and the format would be disrupted.

Since I had announced back during the days of the Velvet Revolution that disrupting the EEU isn’t our goal, on the contrary – we must do our best to make the membership of our country to this organization more productive, I made the decision to depart for St. Petersburg,” Pashinyan said on Facebook.

Political analyst Alexander Manasyan also believes that it is not in Armenia’s interests to disrupt the activities of the EEU.

“We must be able to benefit from the advantages which this institution provides,” he said.

Manasyan argues that the Armenian PM should first of all clarify the Russia-Azerbaijan-Armenia relations arena, and then address the strengthening of Armenia’s positions in the EEU in times when member states are supplying Azerbaijan with weapons.

“Belarus is selling weapons to Azerbaijan by following Russia’s lead. This is unacceptable for us, because it escalates the tension in the region. The existence of this kind of contradictions is unacceptable not only for us, but for the EEU, and if the EEU is an accomplished institution then it shouldn’t tolerate such conduct within its framework,” Manasyan told ARMENPRESS.

Manasyan says that Armenia should also address the restraining of member states in the information front too. “Very often unbalanced statements are voiced from both Moscow, Baku and other member states, which cause tension among EEU members,” he said.

Ruben Mehrabyan on the other hand believes that Armenia should discuss issues concerning oil and gas, and Armenian railway at the session.

“There are issues related to oil and gas which still don’t have a solution in the relations between Armenia and Russia. The monopoly of Gazprom in Armenia remains unclear although authorities are saying if Iran were to make a decent proposal about gas we would take action. The other issue concerns the situation surrounding the Armenian railway,” Mehrabyan said.

Lawyer: Edward Grigoryan did not shoot during police patrol regiment

Yervand Varosyan, the advocate of the member of Sasna Tsrer group Edward Grigoryan, told “A1 +” that Edward Grigoryan did not shoot randomly two years ago in the police patrol regiment. “The fact is that Edward Grigoryan has nothing to do with injuries to any person during the seizure of the police patrol regiment.” said the lawyer.

To the question why today Pavel Manukyan announced that Armen Bilijan, member of Sasna Tsrer, was charged with false accusation, he replied: “Armen Bilyan is not the one who accidentally shot at the police station. The man who died because of accidental shooting, he wad wounded by the friend of mine, my dear friend Edward Grigoryan. Please restore justice,” said Pavel Manukyan.
