Wastes Dumped In The Debed River Preventing Restoration Of Tchotchka

WASTES DUMPED IN THE DEBED RIVER PREVENTING RESTORATION OF TCHOTCHKAN ORCHARDS

Tchotchkan, a village of 2,000 souls in Armenia’s northern Lori
Province, once boasted 900 hectares of peach and grape orchards.

Today, according to village agronomist Sergey Cherchinyan, only 40
hectares remain.

Tchotchkan residents Hengel Siradeghyan and Yurik Galstyan believe
that the orchards must be restored if villagers are to live relatively
normal lives.

75 year-old Siradeghyan became involved in gardening after Armenia
regained its independence in the early 1990s and has established an
orchard measuring 1.3 hectares.

Mr. Siradeghyan has four sons, of which three have permanently left
for Russia. The youngest goes and comes for work. Thus, the pensioner
must take care of the orchard by himself.

When he first planted fruit trees, neighbors thought he was a bit
crazy. Now, he says, people come to him to buy trees to start their
own orchards.

Last year, the irrigation water problem in Tchotchkan was resolved
and the two men thank Mayor Argady Tamazyan for the effort.

“They provide water but look at this tree here. It’s pretty weak. I’ve
pruned the dried out bits. It’s because we use water from the Debed
River in which waste has been dumped by the Akhtala mining company
to irrigate the orchards,” said Mr. Siradeghyan. “The water, when it
comes, resembles a milky soup. It’s fairly thick. We have to use it.”

Mr. Galstyan also complains that his fruity trees are also drying up
from using water from the Debed River.

Mr. Siradeghyan points to 8-10 stunted trees as we walk through his
orchard. He claims it’s due to the Debed River water.

“It’s not only our villagers who consume the fruit. It’s sold in the
markets in Alaverdi and Vanadzor. Who knows if we are selling poisoned
fruit or not?” he noted.

Mr. Siradeghyan says he doesn’t even use nitrates as fertilize because
the trees get enough harmful material from the river water alone. He
says his trees, which he only irrigates once or twice, give better
fruit than his neighbor who irrigates four or five times.

He says last year’s crop amounted to 2-3 tons of fruit and that he
couldn’t sell it all. He went to the village of Tzater and bartered
it for wheat, potatoes, oil and cheese.

“I can’t sell 800 kilograms of peaches per day in Alaverdi. Thus,
I barter what I don’t sell for items to stock up for the winter,” Mr.

Siradeghyan said.

The two men are upbeat about the future. They say that the old orchards
are being restore and that the only impediment are the toxic wastes
being dumped in the Debed River by the Akhtala mining company.

Theme: Politics

The Armenian Genocide is an issue that the Swedish Left Party
(Vansterpartiet) has fought for both in Sweden and internationally,
Swedish MEP and member of Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and
Home Affairs Malin Bjork told Armenian News – NEWS.am.

The MEP said that she was very happy about the resolution from the
European Parliament regarding the Armenian genocide. “Indeed, it was a
resolution from the Swedish Left Party in 2010 that led to the Swedish
Parliament recognizing the horrific events in 1915 as a genocide,”
the MEP said. At the same time, Ms Bjork reminded that the Left Party
spokesperson and Swedish MP Hans Linde said in a press release: “I
am extremely proud and happy to have been involved in this decision,
which represents a major step forward in the reconciliation process
and means of redress for the victims of genocide and their survivors.”

The European Parliament adopted a resolution on Armenian Genocide
Wednesday in Brussels, in which it calls on Turkey to recognize the
atrocities of 1915 as a genocide, confront its past and make efforts
for the actual reconciliation between Armenian and Turkish nations.

Modern Challenges Of Artsakh And The Role Of Archaeology

MODERN CHALLENGES OF ARTSAKH AND THE ROLE OF ARCHAEOLOGY

Thursday, 16 April 2015 14:05

Archaeology is a science studying the past of the mankind, based on
material sources.

In fact, any field archeology aims to obtain new data, and each
detected finding is an undisputed material argument defining the
ethno-cultural or socio-economic character of a particular historical
era.

In the modern world, the role of the most important donor of
historiography is assigned just to archeology, as it is exceptional in
its methods of research by science, the science of researching the
primary sources, necessary for the study of history, spiritual and
material culture, economy and way of life.

With the formation of the Soviet Union, archeology in Armenia was put
on a scientific basis. Already in the 60-70s of the last century, the
Armenian archeology made significant progress in the study of
different periods in the history of the Armenian people and the issues
of material culture. In the framework of the field studies,
excavations were periodically conducted in Artashat, Dwin, Garni,
Armavir, Amberd, and a number of other ancient settlements, which
enriched the history of Armenia with new and unique data.

Unfortunately, this cannot be said about Artsakh. After the annexation
of Karabakh to Soviet Azerbaijan, as it happened in 1923, no objective
archaeological research was carried out here. Since these issues were
the exclusive prerogative of the corresponding republican structures,
in particular the Ministry of Culture of Azerbaijan, it becomes clear
why extensive researches were not carried out here. As a result,
Nagorno Karabakh as part of historical Armenia became a closed zone
for Armenian scientists, and for the entire period of Baku’s dictates
Artsakh was left out of the process of development of Armenian
studies.

The Artsakh Movement and the creation of an independent state opened a
new page in the annals of the historical and cultural heritage of our
region. From the earliest days of our liberation struggle, among the
urgent tasks was the issue of comprehensive study of Armenian
monuments on the territory of the former Azerbaijani SSR. When the
active hostilities in the war imposed on us were completed, some
researchers immediately began to study the historical monuments of
liberated Artsakh.

The excavations of some monuments are underway so far. Among them is
the Azokh cave. The researches held jointly with foreign specialists
allowed to collect unique data about the flora and fauna of the
prehistoric period of the reserve. More important are the excavations
of the ancient settlement of Tigranakert, which have been held since
2006 through state funding. As a result of these studies, we have got
a lot of new information about the history of the Armenian people, the
culture, the art of building, etc. The scientific value of the
excavations of the city, built by the Armenian King Tigran the Great,
is great and the interest towards the monument is increasing every
day.

Equally important is the study of the artifacts of Shushi. The
researches conducted in 2004 aimed to find out who and when founded
the town of Shushi, how it was built, the ethnicity of some monuments,
as well as to evaluate the historical and cultural heritage in
conjunction with the natural-landscape elements, because just this
factor is decisive in the reconstruction and development of the
historic city. Also important are the excavations of some cemeteries,
monasteries and churches, the Togh Melik Palace – one of the oases of
the Armenian statehood.

Naturally, any archaeological research conducted on the territory of
Nagorno Karabakh annoys Azerbaijan. After all, all the artifacts
discovered on the territory of Nagorno Karabakh refute the Azerbaijani
historians’ invented theory that all the historical monuments located
on the territory of Nagorno Karabakh (and in some cases – also in
Armenia) are the result of the “Azerbaijani culture”. Moreover, trying
to deprive the Armenians of their cultural heritage, the Azerbaijani
party presents many Armenian monuments as “Agvan ones”.

Today’s Azerbaijan, which has no fact justifying its territorial
challenges to Artsakh, especially no opportunity to publish a
, has chosen the tactics of .

Books, albums, and atlases, in which all the ancient Christian
monuments are described as Azerbaijani, are annually published through
the funding by different state- and private funds (mainly belonging to
the Aliyevs’ clan).

Surely, anyone who knows even a little bit about the world history
will immediately understand the scientific inconsistency and the
hidden political subtext of these works. However, one thing is clear:
the role of historical and cultural arguments is also important in the
Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement, and Azerbaijan realizes this
well. The intentional and targeted destruction of the monuments,
confirming the residence of the Armenian ethnic group in the region
for thousands of years, is also conditioned by the important role of
the stone witnesses of history.

Surely, from a purely financial point of view, it is impossible and
senseless to respond to all such initiatives of Azerbaijan. Thus we’ll
confirm the existence of a non-existent issue in reality, which
continues to be speculated by Azerbaijanis. On the other hand, in the
existing situation, when an attempt is made daily to assign different
values of our spiritual and material culture, the archaeological
researches, along with solving a scientific issue, also fulfill a
protective function.

One of the most important tasks of the Armenian studies, particularly
archeology, is the expansion of the researches sphere, the attraction
of foreign experts to the study of the ancient monuments located in
the territory of Artsakh, so that their works are presented to the
academic community, the public and state structures and the
international community and become neutral sources on the history, the
spiritual and material culture of the people living in this territory.

CFK Meets Armenian Leaders After Pope-Turkey ‘Genocide’ Controversy

CFK MEETS ARMENIAN LEADERS AFTER POPE-TURKEY ‘GENOCIDE’ CONTROVERSY

Buenos Aires Herald, Argentina
April 14 2015

President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner today received the Prelate
of the Armenian Apostolic Church and other leading representatives
of the community, following pope Francis’ recognition of the Armenian
genocide at the hands of Turkey on the centenary of the event.

The head of state’s encounter with leaders of the Argentine-Armenian
community took place in the midst of strong criticism from Turkey
against the pope and the Argentine government, due to the nation’s
refusal to admit to genocide in 1915.

Archbishop Kissag Mouradian headed the delegation that met with CFK in
Olivos today, in order to express her solidarity with the community
on the 100th anniversary of the massacre which took at least 1.5
million Armenian lives, according to historical studies.

Argentina is one of 22 states which recognises that attack as genocide
and on Sunday the Catholic Church, through the pope’s declarations,
also used that description – a statement which provoked a stinging
rebuke from the Turkish government against the Pontiff and the CFK
administration.

Along with strong words from president Tayyip Erdogan, one of the
fiercest criticisms came from European Union minister Volkan Bozkir.

The politician stated that Francis was from Argentina “a country that
welcomed the nazis who were the main authors of the Jewish Holocaust.”

“Regretfully, in Argentina the Armenian diaspora dominate the media
and businesses,” Bozkir added.

Turkey’s Grand Mufti Attacks Pope Francis For Armenian ‘Genocide’ Re

TURKEY’S GRAND MUFTI ATTACKS POPE FRANCIS FOR ARMENIAN ‘GENOCIDE’ REMARKS

Adnkronos International, Rome
Distributed by Tribune Content Agency
April 13, 2015 Monday

April 13–Turkey’s Grand Mufti Mehmet Gormez, on Monday criticised
Pope Francis for calling the World War I mass killings of Armenians
‘genocide’, comments that sparked a diplomatic row.

“It is upsetting that political lobbies and PR firms around the
world have extended [their activities] to religious institutions’
rites and prayers,” the Anadolu news quoted Gormez as saying.

“If societies start to interrogate each other over past sorrows,
the Vatican will suffer more than anyone else,” continued Gormez,
who heads the Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet), the main
Sunni Muslim religious authority.

Gormez expressed his “sorrow” over the Pope’s remarks, which he
described as “baseless claims,” Andalou reported.

Turkey recalled its ambassador to the Holy see after Francis said
during a mass on Sunday at St Peter’s basilica attended by Armenian
leaders that Armenians had suffered “the first genocide of the 20th
Century”.

Ankara has called Francis’ remarks as “one-sided”, “unacceptable”
and “far from accurate,” with Turkish Parliament speaker Cemil Cicek
condemning them as “slander” and “discrimination”.

Armenia says up to 1.5 million people died in 1915-16 as the Ottoman
Empire was disintegrating. Turkey has said the number of deaths was
much smaller and says ethnic Turks also suffered in the conflict.

Most non-Turkish scholars of the events regard them as genocide.
