Aram I Says All Attempts To Bury In Oblivion Genocide Of Armenians D

ARAM I SAYS ALL ATTEMPTS TO BURY IN OBLIVION GENOCIDE OF ARMENIANS DOOMED TO FAILURE

Tuesday, April 14, 00:32

The Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, His Holiness Aram I,
offered greetings and thanks to Pope Francis following Mass in St.

Peter’s Basilica on Sunday, according to Vatican Radio.

His Holiness Aram I recalled the Genocide of Armenians in Ottoman
Turkey in 1915. He said the Armenian nation lost not only 1,5 million
people but also its cultural and historical heritage in the Ottoman
Empire. All the attempts to bury in oblivion the Genocide of Armenians
are doomed to failure, he said.

His Holiness Aram I expressed gratitude His Holiness Pope Francis’
initiative in celebrating a holy mass in the Papal Basilica of Saint
Peter in the Vatican in commemoration of the one- and-a-half million
martyrs of the Armenian Genocide.

“The Vatican has never been indifferent to the Armenian Genocide. Pope
Benedict XV wrote a strongly worded letter to the Sultan of Turkey
protesting the “massive crime” perpetrated against Armenians. In the
following years, the Holy See extended its social and humanitarian
aid to the Armenian people. In fact, the newly released historical
documents confirm the Holy See’s firm stand with the Armenian people’s
claim for justice. Our people value the moral support of the Holy See.”

He said that His Holiness proclaimed Saint Gregory of Narek a doctor of
the Church (Doctor Ecclesiae). “We express our spiritual joy for this
decision of the Catholic Church. In fact, Saint Gregory of Narek is
one of the great mystics of world Christendom. He was an outstanding
theologian, whose theology is not an intellectual reflection on God,
but a dialogue with God. With his BOOK OF LAMENTATIONS, which is a
human cry for meaning and salvation, St Gregory of Narek remains our
eternal contemporary,” Aram I said.

To recap, Pope Francis on Sunday marked the 100th anniversary of
the slaughter of Armenians by calling the massacre by Ottoman Turks
“the first genocide of the 20th century” and urging the international
community to recognize it as such

Turkey Left Without World’s Support – Armenian Politician

TURKEY LEFT WITHOUT WORLD’S SUPPORT – ARMENIAN POLITICIAN

11:23 * 14.04.15

Turkey’s counter-reaction to the Armenian Genocide centennial liturgy
in Vatican is absolutely out of point rather than aggressive,
according to Giro Manuan, the political affairs director of the
Armenian Revolutionary-Federation-Dashnaksutyun (ARF-D).

“The world is speaking of it, so Turkey is now left alone,” he told
Tert.am, commenting on the holy mass served by Pope Francis at St
Peter’s Temple.

The politician said he wouldn’t be surprised at all by Turkey’s
panic-stricken steps ahead of the tragic anniversary.

“The liturgy was important not only because the Pope said what he
said and referred to it as the 20th century’s first genocide but also
because they easily opened the floor to the Armenian church’s Supreme
Patriarchs who heartily conveyed the Armenian nation’s sentiments
and thoughts to the entire world,” he noted.

Not wishing to mark out the mass from the other ceremonies dedicated
to the centennial, Manoyan said he thinks that all the events put
together would have a greater impact rather than taken separately.

“So, I don’t think it is quite right to speak about the impact of
separate events, because it is part of the general wave that exerts
quite a big pressure on Turkey,” he noted.

Asked whether that wave is likely to break Turkey’s denial policies,
the politician said he doesn’t expect a groundbreaking development
within a short period. “I don’t think their position will change
in just a day’s time – not at under the current authorities -given
the political developments,” he said, referring to the upcoming
parliamentary elections in Turkey.

But the politician admitted that Turkey is facing great pressure by
world countries.

Manoyan said he expects the pressure to increase even further against
the backdrop of the commemoration events in Armenia ahead of April 24.

“We will succeed because we raise the question of truth and justice
as opposed to their denial and lie,” he added.

GREEN AREA HAS BEEN PRIVATIZED: RESIDENTS REMEMBER MAYOR’S WORDS (VIDEO)

11:17 | April 14,2015 | Social

Residents of Shengavit Administrative District 22 Yeghbayrutyan St.

have learnt some days ago that the green area of their yard was
privatized. Permission was given by Yerevan Municipality.

“Our issue is to keep the green area. They say that they have
privatized the area of 120 sq. m and have taken the beautiful park and
the green area, they have a certificate,” Anahit Davtyan told “A1+”.

Alina Danielyan adds, “We were here, someone came and asked whether
we knew that the area had been privatized and that he wanted to buy
it and we answered that we wouldn’t allow.”

The residents remember Mayor Taron Margaryan’s words about landscaping
the area. Owner Arsen Mkhitaryan assured during phone conversation
that nothing would be built there.

“It will remain the same. It was privatized legally, what is the
matter? Is it under construction? Is a building being built?”

The words, though, aren’t reliable for the residents. They suspect
that one day another multi-storey building will be built in front of
their building.

Turkey’s Response To Pope’s Armenian Genocide Remark Unjustified – I

TURKEY’S RESPONSE TO POPE’S ARMENIAN GENOCIDE REMARK UNJUSTIFIED – ITALIAN FM

YEREVAN, April 14. /ARKA/. Turkey’s response to Pope Francis’ remark
over the Armenian genocide is not justified, head of Italy’s foreign
ministry Paolo Gentiloni said.

“The toughness of the Turkish tone does not seem justified, especially
when taking into account the fact that 15 years ago, John Paul II had
expressed similar remarks,” Gentiloni said, as cited by Novosti-Armenia
referring to RIA Novosti.

On Sunday the head of the Roman Catholic Church served a landmark
mass in the Armenian Catholic rite in St. Peter’s Basilica. In his
speech, Pope Francis used the world genocide in describing the mass
killings of Armenians in Ottoman Turkey a century ago. The Pope’s
statement provoked anger in Turkey. Turkey recalled the ambassador
to the Vatican, and called the Vatican ambassador to the foreign
ministry for consultation. -0–

Reports: Hackers Hit Vatican Website Over ‘Genocide’ Comment

REPORTS: HACKERS HIT VATICAN WEBSITE OVER ‘GENOCIDE’ COMMENT

The Hill, DC
April 14 2015

By Elise Viebeck – 04/14/15 09:20 AM EDT

Turkish hackers reportedly hit the Vatican’s website on Monday evening
after Pope Francis referred to the mass killings of Armenians by
Turks as a “genocide.”

Vatican.va was knocked offline by a denial-of-service attack on Monday
night, according to reports, but restored by Tuesday morning. A
Turkish hacker on Twitter took credit for the hit, demanding that
the pope retract his comments.

It is not the first time the Vatican has been targeted by hackers.

Anonymous, the international hacking collective, took down the Catholic
church’s main website as well as Vatican Radio in 2012.

The latest cyberattack took place amid uproar in Turkey over the Pope’s
“genocide” comment.

Francis was referring to the slaughter of an estimated 1.5 million
Armenians at the end of the Ottoman Empire between 1915 and 1923.

Turkey officially denies that the killings were systematic. The
Armenian community demands that Turkey acknowledge the deaths as a
genocide, and more than 20 countries have passed bills describing
the killings as such.

Francis’s comment have prompted diplomatic fallout between the Vatican
and Ankara, with the Turkish government recalling its ambassador to
the Holy See.

ISTANBUL: Pope’s remarks on Armenia issue irk Ankara

Turkey has strongly reacted against Pope Francis’ description of the
mass killings of Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman Empire as
“genocide,” vowing to show an appropriate reaction against the
Vatican.

Pope Francis referred the killings of Ottoman Armenians in 1915 as
“the first genocide of the 20th century,” citing a statement signed by
John Paul II and the Armenian patriarch in 2001.

“In the past century our human family has lived through three massive
and unprecedented tragedies,” he said. “The first, which is widely
considered ‘the first genocide of the 20th century,’ struck your own
Armenian people.”

Turkey’s reaction was delivered to Vatican Ambassador Antonio
Lucibello who was summoned to the Foreign Ministry in Ankara on April
12.

At the meeting, Foreign Ministry Deputy Undersecretary Levent Murat
Burhan told Lucibello that the Pope’s remarks caused “deep sorrow and
disappointment” in Ankara.

Criticizing the Pope’s remarks as “one-sided” and “far from accurate,”
Turkey said it could not understand why the Pope made a “hierarchy”
between the pains suffered by Muslims and Christians at the time.

Referring only to “Armenian claims” over the historical incident and
not mentioning other Anatolian populations killed at the same time
does not befit a cleric, Ankara reportedly told the Vatican.

Ambassador Lucibello was told that the Pope’s statement “created a
loss of trust in bilateral ties” and that “Turkey will surely
respond.”

Sources said Turkey was considering withdrawing its ambassador to the
Vatican for consultations.

While Francis did not use his own words to describe the murders as
genocide, John Paul II’s use of the term provoked a sharp reaction
from Turkey at the time.

“We recall the centenary of that tragic event, that immense and
senseless slaughter whose cruelty your forebears had to endure,”
Francis said.

“It is necessary, and indeed a duty, to honor their memory, for
whenever memory fades, it means that evil allows wounds to fester,” he
added.

Armenia says up to 1.5 million Ottoman Armenians were killed in a
genocide starting in 1915. Turkey denies that the deaths amounted to
genocide, saying the death toll of Armenians killed during mass
deportations has been inflated and that those killed in 1915 and 1916
were victims of general unrest during World War I.

Pope speaks out on Armenian genocide; Turkey pulls ambassador in protest

By Tom Kington

Pope Francis on Sunday described the massacre of Armenians by Ottoman
Turks 100 years ago as “genocide,” sparking a diplomatic incident with
Turkey, which denies genocide took place.

Speaking before a Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica to mark the centenary
of the killings, Francis defined the slaughter of as many as 1.5
million Armenians as “the first genocide of the 20th century,” quoting
a statement made by Pope John Paul II in 2001.

“The remaining two were perpetrated by Nazism and Stalinism,” he said.
“And more recently there have been other mass killings, like those in
Cambodia, Rwanda, Burundi and Bosnia.”

Francis said it was “necessary, and indeed a duty” to remember the
Armenians killed, “for whenever memory fades, it means that evil
allows wounds to fester. Concealing or denying evil is like allowing a
wound to keep bleeding without bandaging it!”

Though he is not the first pope to use “genocide” to describe the
Armenian massacre, and he previously used the word in 2013 to describe
the killings, his speech on Sunday carried extra weight because it was
delivered on the anniversary of the slaughter, in St. Peter’s and in
the presence of Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and Armenian church
leaders, who attended the service.

In response, Turkey summoned the Vatican’s ambassador to the country
to complain about Francis’ remarks, saying it had expressed “great
disappointment and sadness” and accused the pope of being
discriminatory because he cited only Christian Armenians, and not
Muslims.

Turkey also recalled its ambassador to the Vatican over the incident,
according to the Associated Press.

Turkey claims that just half a million Armenians died in fighting when
they rose up against their Ottoman rulers after World War I, and
denies that their deaths constitute an act of genocide.

That position conflicts with the views of most historians of the
period, who agree that Armenians were victims of genocide. A number of
countries have issued statements over the years condemning Turkey’s
actions as genocide. Although President Obama, before his election,
referred several times to the deaths as genocide, he has not done so
as president, maintaining his predecessors’ reluctance to alienate
Turkey, a highly valued ally in the Middle East.

Francis’ comments were hailed in Southern California’s large Armenian
community, which has lobbied for years for official recognition of the
genocide.

“As far as the Armenian American community is concerned, the pope has
taken a courageous stand despite the threats from the republic of
Turkey,” Glendale Mayor Zareh Sinanyan said.

Sinanyan said Turkey’s denial of the genocide and the United States’
refusal to acknowledge it has not allowed Armenians to move on from
the killings.

“It’s like a bleeding wound that just won’t go away,” he said.
“There’s no closure, there’s no healing.”

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank), who is the lead sponsor of the proposed
Armenian Genocide Truth and Justice Resolution, also praised the pope
and called again for action by the United States.

“Pope Francis has proven himself a remarkable figure in every way, and
his recognition today of the Armenian genocide was another courageous
milestone in his papacy,” he said in a statement issued by his office.
“I hope that the pope’s words will inspire our president and Congress
to demonstrate a like commitment to speaking the truth about the
Armenian genocide and to renounce Turkey’s campaign of concealment and
denial.”

Turkey said Francis’ comments “contradicted his message of peace,
reconciliation and dialogue” made during his visit to Turkey in
November.

“The pope’s statement, which is far from the legal and historical
reality, cannot be accepted,” Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut
Cavusoglu wrote in a tweet on Sunday.

“Religious authorities are not the places to incite resentment and
hatred with baseless allegations,” he added.

Francis now risks losing Turkey’s support as he seeks to defend
Christian communities being persecuted by Islamic State in Syria and
Iraq. Many Christians have sought refuge in Turkey, a predominantly
Muslim country, as they have fled the Islamist militants.

Describing those communities on Sunday, Francis portrayed the “muffled
and forgotten cry of so many of our defenseless brothers and sisters
who, on account of their faith in Christ or their ethnic origin, are
publicly and ruthlessly put to death — decapitated, crucified, burned
alive — or forced to leave their homeland.”

In a speech made at St Peter’s before the mass, Karekin II, the
patriarch of the Armenian Church, used the word “genocide” 13 times.

“With a deliberate plan, with horrific atrocities, one and a half
million Armenians were slaughtered,” he said. “Our ancient people were
uprooted from their cherished cradle of life — their historic
homeland — and scattered over different countries. Our centuries-old
Christian legacy heritage was ruined, obliterated, and seized.”
