At Villa Empain President Sargsyan made a statement
27.05.2010
Dear representatives of Pogossian family,
Dear Guests,
Ladies and Gentelmen,

I am happy to be here, at one of Brussels historical and cultural
sites – Villa Empain. First, allow me to start with the words of
appreciation for the Pogossian Foundation, which has undertaken the
task of restoring this marvelous monument of the first half of the
20th century.

Baron Louis Empain, a patron of arts intended to create here a center
of arts and culture. But the 20th century was harsh and the start of
WWII cancelled those plans. Today, thanks to Pogossian family, Villa
Empain becomes what its founder wanted it to be – the center for
East-West dialogue and arts.

We, the Armenians, due to ruthless whims of history, are spread all
over the world. In the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th
century the chieftains of the Ottoman Empire failed to understand and
appreciate the Armenians. They failed to understand those unique
people, who learn foreign languages fast, establish relations with
other nations and serve as mediators between East and West in trade,
business, culture, and literature. They failed to comprehend why those
strange Armenians self-organize, create cultural centers, and publish
multilingual periodicals. And they had found the easiest solution to
the problem: if there are no Armenians, there is no need to ponder
over these questions.

The Genocide made the Armenians spread all over the world. Armenians
live and thrive not only in Christian but also in many Muslim
countries. It is hard to say whether those Armenians who had fled the
horrors of the Genocide were received more warmly in Christian or in
Muslim countries. Support and assistance provided to our nation in
those dire times is immeasurable.

Today, here at Villa Empain, the Pogossian Foundation remains faithful
to the Armenian tradition of being a mediator between East and
West. In our difficult times, when there are certain attempts to
supply conflicts with religious lining and speak about the clash of
civilizations, we, the Armenians should continue with our
long-established traditions of being a bridge between different
cultures. As a nation scattered around the globe we know only too well
how important tolerance is, as well as respect toward the other’s
belief, language, and culture. For this very reason we are able to
truly and sincerely appreciate the importance of dialogue between
cultures.

We also know that problems of intolerance and discrimination are not
to be solved through the statements, declarations, or manifestations
of good will alone. In the end of the 20th century, the humanity
witnessed yet another horrid crime – genocide in Rwanda. First, that
genocide was carried out through words. The Armenians had passed the
same road of sufferings. However, when the Armenian Genocide was
committed there were neither radio, nor TV, while the ideologists of
the crime in Rwanda injected their poison through that very means of
communication.
Promulgation of hatred is not just neutral utilization of the freedom
of speech: it misuses that freedom to plant hatred and trigger
violence against one, targeted group of people. Whoever the members of
that targeted group may be =80` a Jew or a Tutsi, an Arab or an
Armenian – their chances of becoming a victim of a violent crime
multiply.

Recently, Armenians have become a target of such promulgation of
hatred. When the leader of a neighboring state says that the Armenians
must be deported for the sole reason that they are Armenians, I cannot
but help to remember what happened in 1915. However, I cannot also
neglect the events in Rwanda, where similar statements were put on TV
and radio to pave the way for violence.

When from another neighboring state we hear hate howls and constant
threats of war, I once again recall the ruthless lessons of
history. In Azerbaijan, just like in the Ottoman Empire, the Armenians
were perceived as an alien entity – disturbing and useless, which must
be get rid off through the massacres and atrocities. And after all
this, Baku is trying once again to establish its rule over Nagorno
Karabakh and its freedom-loving people, the very people they were
craving to wipe out.

Armenophobia becomes mentality, and its dissemination – a state
policy. Armenophobia today is one of the most basic manifestation of
misanthropy. Humanism has withstood the battle but fight against
misanthropy still goes on. Misanthropy has lost the battle but,
regrettably, not the war. How many places are there in the world where
children look up into the sky not to welcome the sun and admire the
sky but to see if death and destruction are not rushing down.

The noble mission of Baron Empain was terminated by the World War
II. The factual end of the war was heralded by the Nuremberg process,
in which humanity defeated misanthropy. Today, Baron Empain’s vision
becomes reality thanks to the Pogossian family, because we, the
Armenians do not terrify other’s children with saber-rattling, because
our goal is the dialogue of cultures and mutual enrichment.

And I am happy that Villa Empain – the center for East-West dialogue
and arts opens its doors, and I cordially congratulate all of us on

CA 43rd Assembly
District Primary Election:

USA Armenian Life Magazine
Issue #1209 May 28, 2010

On May 25, in answer to a question regarding his position on Armenian
demands for justice and the Armenian Genocide, and ending the
occupation of Western Armenia and Cilicia by Turkey, Sunder Ramani,
Republican candidate for CA 43rd Assembly District declared to USA
Armenian Life Magazine: “Justice and consequences for wrongs that
have been committed, I am principally in support of. I wholeheartedly
support all efforts to ensure the rightful return to the Republic
of Armenia all lost or illegally acquired property. This includes,
but is not limited to, the return of all illegally seized property by
Turkish Government in Western Armenia and the ending of its illegal
blockade; and occupation of Western Armenia and Cilicia.”

Given the fact that Mr. Ramani has developed and maintained
close co-operation with the local Armenian-American community,
the upcoming June 8 CA 43rd Assembly District Primary Election can
become a ground-breaking political event both for the district and
for Armenian-Americans in general.

The election, pitting Republican Ramani against Democrat Mike Gatto,
may prove to be politically very costly for local un-Democratic
leaders. Why? Gatto and his group not only have awakened a sleeping
political voting block — the 43rd district’s Armenian-American
community, but also antagonized it.

Back in April, during the Special Primary Election, Gatto and his
allies used underhanded tactics against his main Armenian-American
opponent, fellow Democrat Nayiri Nahabedian. They used a second
Democrat Armenian-American, Chahe Keuroghelian as a spoiler who
took away crucial votes from Nahabedian. The result: A tainted Gatto
victory against Nahabedian by little over 3,000 votes.

In that Democratic special primary, Gatto received 11,954 votes or
31.96%; Nahabedian received 8,358 votes or 22.34% and Keuroghelian
merely received 14.60% or 5,462 votes.

Gatto became the beneficiary of Keuroghelian’s back-stabbing of his
own community. Gatto also received pre-election help from Keuroghelian
who forced Nahabedian to lead multi-front battle which caused her to
waste her valuable time, energy, and financial resources.

After the election, while Gatto’s “Trojan Horse” Keuroghelian was
basking under the sun of a Gatto victory, his fellow Armenian Americans
were left bleeding with an unjust defeat.

It’s important to note that in that same special primary, the lone
Republican Ramani received 11,634 votes or 31.10 % positioning himself
well-within a striking distance from victory over Gatto.

On April 18, in a post-election article, I had written: “Armenian
Americans now should look carefully at the candidacy of Mr. Ramani
and compare his platform to Mr. Gatto’s. Based on 1) The merit
of the candidates; 2) On their own disappointment with the local
Democratic party machine’s conniving tactic to “divide and conquer”
against their community; 3) On their deep disappointment and even
anger at the Obama administration for reneging on Pres. Obama’s and
his Secretary of State “Oil Lady” Hilary Clinton’s campaign promises
to properly recognize the Armenian Genocide, should consider casting
their votes in favor of the republican Ramani. … The numbers clearly
show that Nahabedian’s support base holds the political wild card
and can be used to punish Gatto’s self-serving Democratic allies’
dirty politics, by swinging their vote in favor of the Republican
candidate Ramani; and by continuing the same practice in every local
and regional election until these dark forces give up on their heinous
acts of dividing others in order to ‘conquer’ them. … Let the local
and state Democratic leaders wake up and reconsider their antagonistic
policy against their fellow Democrats of Armenian American ancestry.”

Mr. Ramani’s campaign platform and his character make him a good
representative for all constituents – Republicans, Democrats and
independents, of the 43rd district.

Last week the 35th Governor of California, George Deukmejian, endorsed
Ramani’s candidacy. Deukmejian served as the first Armenian American
Governor and understands that Ramani would best represent and work
with the constituents of this district. “Sunder Ramani is an American
success story. He is a job creator and problem solver. Sunder’s
business experience and his common sense approach will help fix the
mess in Sacramento. He is simply the best candidate to represent this
district. We need more citizens like Sunder in public office today,”
declared Governor Deukmejian.

In accepting the Governor’s support, Mr. Ramani said, “To have the
support and endorsement of former Governor George Deukmejian means a
tremendous amount to me and my campaign to become the next Assembly
Member of the 43rd District. Deukmejian’s leadership and dedication
to California is admirable. I am honored to have earned his support.”

If elected, he would be the first Indian-American to serve in the
California State Legislature, much like his predecessor Paul Krekorian
who is now the first Armenian-American to serve on the LA City Council.

Over the course of his 25 + years of service throughout the 43rd AD,
Mr. Ramani has contributed significantly to the advancement of the
community. His traditional values, views and positions on various
issues are more aligned with those of the Armenian-American community.

His business sense and community activism make him the most appealing
and most identifiable candidate.

That’s the primary reason why Ramani’s endorsement list of other
prominent Armenian American leaders includes: Glendale Mayor Ara
Najarian, former Glendale Mayor Rafi Manoukian, former Glendale Mayor
Bob Yousefian, Presidential advisor Ken Khachigian, Glendale School
Board President Greg Krikorian, former LA County DA Robert Philibosian,
Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig Missakian.

Mr. Ramani is also officially endorsed by the English-language USA
Armenian Life Magazine and the Armenian-language Hye Kiank Armenian
Weekly.

Yes, local Armenian-Americans are deeply hurt by Gatto. But more
importantly, they are entitled to have political aspirations just
like their fellow Americans. They are also entitled to practice the
high ideal once expressed by Gov. Deukmejian, “Don’t get mad, don’t
get even, just get ahead!”

By contributing to a Sunder victory, the Armenian-American community
will send a clear message to “The Powers that be” or Party Leadership
on both side of the isle that: – The divide-and-conquer strategy will
not be a tactically viable mechanism for them to use against the
Armenian-American community, ramming their self-interests through,
underlined a local activist. No dirty tricks should be employed for
any purpose let alone the mean-spirited one — “The end justifies
the means;” – Armenian-American voters, who have traditionally
voted as and for Democrats, throw out that party because they now
realize that it manipulates, exploits and takes them for granted; –
They are mobilized enough, as a viable voting block, to do a complete
about face and elect a candidate — in this case, a Republican, like
Sunder Ramani — from the opposing party to ensure that its needs and
objectives are indeed met and that the aforementioned transgressions
do not become institutionalized and that those relationships are based
on mutual respect for one another and an expectation of reasonable,
reciprocity-based relationship, between the Armenian-American community
and the Leadership of both Parties within the Legislature.

The Armenian-American vote will be pivotal on June 8th. Since the
April election, a very aggressive Armenian Voter outreach Program
has been carried out by the community itself.

Another local activist stated that the 43rd district’s
Armenian-Americans are not in the least bit pleased with the fact that,
they as a people, lost a seat, which based on population projections
rightfully belongs to them.

So the opportunity to consolidate the local Armenian-American voting
block is right around the corner. And in order to achieve that
objective, no resources should be spared.

Equally important is the political objective of punishing Gatto
for his poor campaign tactics while remunerating Ramani for his
constructive campaign platform and for his clear position on issues
that are important for the community.

Post-Soviet CSTO Bloc Supports Medvedev’s Pan-European Security Pact

POST-SOVIET CSTO BLOC SUPPORTS MEDVEDEV’S PAN-EUROPEAN SECURITY PACT DRAFT

RIA Novosti
May 31, 2010
YEREVAN

The Parliamentary Assembly Council of the post-Soviet Collective
Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) bloc has given its support
to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s initiative to improve the
European security structure, the speaker of the Russian lower house
of parliament said.

“We perfectly understand that security in Europe can not be built at
the expense of other states,” Boris Gryzlov, who also chairs the CSTO
Parliamentary Assembly, said.

“The entire space must be within the overall security frames and
all members of the Council have supported Russian President Dmitry
Medvedev’s initiative on improving the structure of European security,”
Gryzlov continued.

He added that the CSTO PA Council welcomed the development of the
Russian leader’s idea and will persuade their European colleagues
that relations on security issues must be based on this approach.

The CSTO comprises Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia,
Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

Medvedev announced his initiative to draw up a new pan-European
security pact in May 2008, and the first real draft was presented
by the Kremlin in November 2009. It got responses from more than 20
governments and their administrations. The European Union and NATO
have also studied the draft.

However, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said such a treaty
was unnecessary.

Her position was echoed by NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen
who has stated repeatedly that the West is no threat to Russia and
that extra security guarantees are uncalled for.

The assembly meeting was held on Monday for the first time in Armenian
capital of Yerevan.

Film director Hovhannes Galstyan said that much should be done prior
to participation in the main competition program of the Cannes Film
Festival.

“However, there are four programs, participation in which should
become a national holiday,” he told a press conference on May 31.

According to Galstyan, the applicants’ goal is participation in
the Festival’s film market, which provides great opportunities for
presenting and exchanging films with other countries.

“We participated in the Cannes Festival for the second time, what
obliged us to present our country and try to establish new partner
relations. And we have succeeded in it,” Director of Armenia’s National
Cinema Center Gevorg Gevorgyan said.

He noted that English, Norwegian, Russian, Indian, Czech and French
companies displayed interest towards the Armenian cinema.

“In addition, we needed to present our festivals, such as Golden
Apricot and Reanimation,” stressed Gevorgyan.

According to him, Hovhannes Galstyan found overall funding for his
new film – Gabriel and Mary – in the framework of the film market.

Two Armenian films were screened at the Cannes film market: Suren
Babayan’s Do Not Look in the Mirror by and Hovhannes Galstyan’s
Interlaced Parallels.

“The Armenian-Polish relations are friendly and they need not be
commented on,” Poland’s Ambassador to Armenia Zdislav Rachinski
Rachinski told a press conference in Yerevan today.

“Poland’s position on the Karabakh issue is neutral. It accepts the
resolution adopted by the European community,” the Ambassador said,
commenting on Resolution 2216. He added that “the conflict should be
solved in a peaceful way on the basis of the principle of the right
of nations to self-determination, territorial integrity should also
be respected.”

“The problems should be solved through negotiations involving the
three parties,” the Ambassador said, emphasizing the importance of
NKR people’s participation in the talks.

According to Zdislav Rachinski , there can be a stable solution
only when the Armenian and Azerbaijani sides come to agreement,
while the EU can help when it comes to financing and deployment of
peacekeeping forces.

Touching upon Turkey’s aspiration to join the EU, the Ambassador said
“Turkey is not developed enough to enter the European Union now.” Mr.

Erdogan Cancels Visit To Argentina: Kemal Ataturk Bust Not To Be Ere

ERDOGAN CANCELS VISIT TO ARGENTINA: KEMAL ATATURK BUST NOT TO BE ERECTED IN BUENOS AIRES

Politics

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is traveling about
Latin America, cancelled his visit to Argentina. The reason is that
the municipal authorities of capital city of Argentina Buenos Aires,
pressed by the Armenian community, gave up the idea of erecting Kemal
Ataturk bust.

Erdogan was to have left Brazil for Argentina on May 31. The Turkish
Prime Minister was to meet with Argentine President Cristina Fernandez
de Kirchner in Buenos Aires. Besides, he was to attend Kemal Ataturk
bust unveiling ceremony in Buenos Aires George Nuber park.

However, as early as before Erdogan started his travels, at the end of
the previous week, after the protests of Argentine Armenian community
representatives, Buenos Aires Municipality decided to annul Kemal
Ataturk bust erection ceremony.

According to Radio Liberty, besides making the mentioned decision,
Municipality representative Diego Santilli also apologized to the
Armenian community for a “hard mistake,” as he classed it, and promised
to disallow to unveil the bust.

Naturally, official Ankara’s response to the decision was harsh.

According to Turkish press, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu spoke
to his Argentine counterpart George Taiana and called on him “to stay
loyal to his commitments.”

In addition, the Turkish Foreign Ministry issued a statement accusing
the Armenian organizations of Argentine of “hostile” intervention.

“Argentine government acted so, pressed by Armenian circles having
hostile disposition towards Turkey,” the statement read.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, for his part, had a phone conversation with
President Cristina Kirchner and demanded reconsideration of the
decision.

In response, the Argentine President said that though she understands
Turkish side’s position, nevertheless Argentine government cannot
intervene into municipal authorities’ decision.

“It would be a violation of Argentine Constitution,” the President
said.

Therefore Prime Minister Erdogan cancelled his visit to Argentina
and will leave Brazil for Chile instead.

It should be mentioned that the news attracted the attention of the
leading world media.

Thus, BBC besides presenting the fact also touched upon the
Armenia-Turkey relations. “The Armenian organizations want Turkey
to recognize the mass slaughters as genocide, and Argentina is among
the countries having done so,” BBC reported.

Mohammedan countries’ media also commented upon the news. The Al
Arabiya TV channel touching upon the news and the Armenian Genocide
issue wrote: “The Argentina-Turkey relations worsened again.”

And Turkish Zaman touched upon the adoption of the bill on recognition
of the Armenian Genocide in Argentina. The newspaper mentioning that
the respective legal act was adopted in 2006 November and ratified by
Argentine President of that time Nestor Kirchner (current President
Cristina Kirchner’s husband: Panorama.am) tries to ground this Latin
American country’s position:

“Argentina has the third biggest Armenian community after the U.S.

and France,” the newspaper wrote. It should be mentioned that
indeed, the Argentine Armenian community is the third in the Western
Hemisphere and, in general, it comes after not only U.S. and France,
but also Russia, Iran, Georgia, Syria, and, according to some data,
also the Ukraine.
