Erdogan Scraps Visit To Argentina

ERDOGAN SCRAPS VISIT TO ARGENTINA

PanARMENIAN.Net
May 31, 2010 – 12:07 AMT 07:07 GMT

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan canceled a trip to
Argentina on Sunday after Buenos Aires authorities halted the display
of a bust of Turkey’s founder, a move Turkey blamed on Armenian
lobbyists.

The row over the statue, due to be unveiled in a park, comes during
a high-profile trip to South America by Erdogan. Turkey’s Foreign
Ministry said in a statement the two-day visit, which was to have
begun Sunday, was canceled, and it “hopes Argentina will take steps
to remove the shadow cast on Turkish-Argentine relations.”

“The trip was canceled because written permission for the monument
given to Turkey beforehand by the … Buenos Aires district was
reversed as a result of initiatives by the Armenian lobby, which
is opposed to Turkey,” it said. “Argentina’s president spoke with
Erdogan to explain she could not overrule the decision, yet he
found this unacceptable and decided not to go,” the statement added,
Reuters reported.

Israeli Navy Opens Fire On Gaza Aid Flotilla

ISRAELI NAVY OPENS FIRE ON GAZA AID FLOTILLA

PanARMENIAN.Net
May 31, 2010 – 12:26 AMT 07:26 GMT

Israel navy troops opened fire on pro-Palestinian activists aboard a
six-ship aid flotilla sailing for the Gaza Strip, killing two of them
and wounding 30 others, after the activists ignored Israeli orders
to turn back.

The Israeli naval vessels reportedly made contact earlier with the
six-ship flotilla, which is carrying 10,000 tons of humanitarian aid
and supplies to Gaza.

The Israeli navy was operating under the assumption that the activists
manning the boats would not heed their calls to turn around, and
Israeli troops were prepared to board the ships and steer them away
from the Gaza shores and toward the Israeli port city of Ashdod.

The flotilla, which includes three cargo ships and three passenger
ships, is trying to draw attention to Israel’s three-year blockade
of the Gaza Strip. The boats are carrying items that Israel bars from
reaching Gaza, like cement and other building materials.

The activists said they also were carrying hundreds of electric-powered
wheelchairs, prefabricated homes and water purifiers.

This is the ninth time that the Free Gaza movement has tried to ship
in humanitarian aid to Gaza since August 2008.

Israel has let ships through five times, but has blocked them from
entering Gaza waters since the three-week military offensive against
Gaza’s Hamas rulers in January 2009. The flotilla bound for Gaza is
the largest to date, Haaretz reported.

Turkey, U.S. To Debate Iran’s Nuclear Program

TURKEY, U.S. TO DEBATE IRAN’S NUCLEAR PROGRAM

PanARMENIAN.Net
May 31, 2010 – 14:45 AMT 09:45 GMT

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu is flying to Washington for talks on
Tuesday with his U.S. counterpart, Hillary Clinton, and Prime Minister
Recep Tayyip Erdogan plans to meet with President Barack Obama next
month as the two NATO allies work to contain a deepening dispute over
how to deal with Iran’s nuclear program, Today’s Zaman reported.

The rift puts Turkish-U.S. ties at risk, which, in the words of
Davutoglu, were in their “golden age” until quite recently. Turkey,
working together with fellow UN Security Council member Brazil, managed
on May 17 to get Iran agree to a deal almost identical to one proposed
by the UN atomic watchdog International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
and backed by the U.S. and other world powers only seven months ago.

But the U.S. swiftly dismissed the deal as nothing but a “ploy”
for Iran to avoid sanctions.
