Pashinyan to meet with Armenia cultural figures, if elected PM Pashinyan to meet with Armenia cultural figures, if elected PM

YEREVAN. – If elected Prime Minister of Armenia, PM candidate Nikol Pashinyan plans to meet with a delegation that represents the entire cultural arena of the country.

Pashinyan, who heads the opposition “Way Out” (Yelk) Faction at the National Assembly (NA), wrote about the above-said on his Facebook account.

In the opposition politician’s words, his talk Saturday at the NA with several cultural figures has brought forth some questions.

“Basically, the following question is raised: On what principle were the figures participating in the meeting invited?” Pashinyan wrote. “The initiators [of this talk] informed that they want to meet with me with a group; and I, naturally, didn’t turn it down. (…). Such meetings could and can take place with the most diverse groups and people.

“Nonetheless, in case of being elected PM, I am obligated to organize a meeting with a representative delegation that represents the entire cultural arena of Armenia, and to discuss the current and strategic problems of the domain of culture and their solutions.”

Russian TV channel intentionally or unintentionally adds Armenian flag in logo

YEREVAN, MAY 4, ARMENPRESS. A Russian TV channel has added the Armenian flag’s tricolor in its logo.

Dozhd (Дождь) TV channel (TV Rain), has replaced the letter “ж” – “zh” with the sign “///” – with red, blue and orange.

The channel hasn’t made any official comments about the logo colors.

Although unclear if indeed the TV channel has deliberately added the Armenian tricolor in its logo or if it was a coincidence, the channel however has numerously covered the latest political developments of Armenia and the protests.

    Armenian Song

    By Bedros Afeyan

    Armenian songs sad and strong
    Shielded landmarks, mountains cropped
Fierce freedom pooled in lakes of reasoned chords
    Birds bearing witness, melancholy drones
Joyous village dancers and wedding drums
Huddled stoves, early morning bread'n prayers
Rising hope, horizon's keys sharp and fair
Jump into the fire set by the strangers
Their's is but a false prophet of death or dispair

    Armenian songs sad and strong
    Give life to magic mountains
    Where future lovers never quarrel
But yearn to weave their soft tales home
Stones bearing crosses to the bone
A language born in wit's own poem
    To glimpse eternal flames
As love casts its shadows blue
In Armenian songs sad and strong

Over 100 Members of Congress Urge President Trump to Affirm the Armenian Genocide

ARMENIAN ASSEMBLY OF AMERICA

PRESS RELEASE

OVER 100 MEMBERS OF
CONGRESS URGE PRESIDENT TRUMP TO AFFIRM THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

Armenian Assembly of
America Welcomes Members' Initiative

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, a bipartisan letter signed by 102 Members was sent to President
Donald Trump urging him to affirm the Armenian Genocide, reported the Armenian
Assembly of America (Assembly). Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues
Co-Chairs Representatives Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), David Trott (R-MI), Jackie
Speier (D-CA), and David Valadao (R-CA), along with Vice-Chairs Adam Schiff
(D-CA) and Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), spearheaded the letter asking the White House
to honor the United States' historic leadership in defending human rights and affirm
the Armenian Genocide.

The letter to President Trump states: “In
the spirit of honoring the victims and redoubling our commitment to prevent
genocide, we ask you to appropriately mark April 24th as a day of American
remembrance of the Armenian Genocide.”

The Members of Congress point out the remarkable
record in American history in helping save the survivors of this crime, and how
U.S. Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire Henry Morgenthau helped to chronicle the
Genocide in 1915. The letter also references the United States’ historical
account on affirming the Armenian Genocide. “In leading an honest and accurate
American remembrance of this known case of genocide, you will stand with
President Reagan, who recognized the Armenian Genocide in 1981, and the
Eisenhower Administration, which did the same in a 1951 submission to the
International Court of Justice. The House of Representatives has also
commemorated the Armenian Genocide, through H.J.Res.148 in 1975 and H.J.Res.247
in 1984.”

This past Wednesday, Members of the
Armenian Caucus hosted an Armenian Genocide Commemoration on the 103rd
anniversary of the 1915 Genocide in Ottoman Turkey. Photos are available on the Armenian Assembly of America's Facebook Page.

“On behalf of the Armenian Assembly, I
want to thank the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues for their continued
commitment to unequivocally affirm the Armenian Genocide," Assembly
Executive Director Bryan Ardouny said.

Earlier this month, the Armenian
National Institute (ANI) launched a new 24-panel digital exhibit displaying the
role of the YMCA and American relief work during the first republic of Armenia
(1918-1920). The exhibit focuses on John Elder and James O. Arroll who arrived
in Yerevan, Armenia in January 1918 to open a YMCA center.

“At the height of the
conflict in the Caucasus when other relief workers chose to evacuate, John
Elder refused to leave fearing that tens of thousands more Armenians would die
of starvation if the relief programs were discontinued. He is credited in
providing relief for 15,000 Armenian orphans. Such selfless heroism must be
recognized,” ANI Director Dr. Rouben Adalian stated.

Established
in 1972, the Armenian Assembly of America is the largest Washington-based
nationwide organization promoting public understanding and awareness of
Armenian issues. The Assembly is a non-partisan, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt
membership organization.

Police to file motion on crowd’s chaotic intrusion in Public Radio HQ, YSU

Category
Society

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Armenia tasked the Police Department to launch a motion on the incident involving opposition MP Nikol Pashinyan, when a crowd of protesters breached into the headquarters of the Public Radio of Armenia. A day earlier a group of the crowd even breached into the Yerevan State University.

The Prosecutor General’s Office released a statement, saying a group of participants of the Pashinyan-led rally breached into the Yerevan State University April 13 by damaging the entrance door and attempted to break into the Rector’s office by breaching the doors. Two security guards of the university were injured by the protesters.

On the next day, April 14, lawmaker Pashinyan and his followers subdued an on-duty police officer and breached into the headquarters of the Public Radio of Armenia in Yerevan, a strategically significant building subject to state protection.

The protesters caused chaos, breached into offices by breaking the doors open.

A police officer ordered the lawmaker to guide his followers out of the building and vacate the headquarters. However, the Member of Parliament, who is the organizer of the rally, failed to comply with the lawful demand of the police, did not notify the rally-goers about the order in an apparent violation of the law on assembly.

Nikol Pashinyan demanded airtime while holding the building.

The Prosecutor General’s Office tasked the Armenian law enforcement to file a motion to determine whether or not the incident includes grounds for launching a criminal case.

Russia to view any military threat against Armenia as threat to itself, says senior State Duma MP Konstantin Zatulin

Russia intends to fulfill its allied commitments for Armenia in the security and defense sector, Konstantin Zatulin, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee for CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots of the Russian parliament told a press conference in the Armenian parliament.

“We have ratified the documents on the formation of the Armenian-Russian unified troops and the single air defense system. In the future Russia will also view any military threat against Armenia as a threat against itself [Russia], when it regards commitments in the framework of CSTO”, he said.

He also mentioned that Russia has made conclusions after the clashes of April 2016 which were unleashed by Azerbaijan. “We are sorry that Azerbaijan didn’t find another use of Russian weapons than the violation of the ceasefire in the conflict zone. We’ve made conclusions from this all”, he said.

Zatulin added that Russia has made relevant conclusions regarding the breach in balance of arms in the region and provided Armenia with modern defense measures.

“I am a convinced supporter of the Armenian-Russian historical ties, and the majority of State Duma MPs share this stance”.

Food: The 10 Hottest New Restaurants in Florence , Italy

Eater.com

Today Eater heads to Florence, Italy, to focus on 10 of the city’s buzziest new restaurants and bars. Food-tour curator, food writer, and sommelier Coral Sisk divulges the latest trends in the Florentine food scene.

Florence lags behind most European capitals in terms of a progressive dining scene, but 2017 showed promising signs,” says Sisk. “While fiercely rooted in tradition and provincial habit, Florence boasts a strong international identity, which is becoming more and more evident — in spite of nationalist pushback and attempts to ban foreign food shops.”

Among Sisk’s picks is an Armenian-Georgian newcomer (Ararat Restaurant & Wine Bar), a haute-couture dining destination by megachef Massimo Bottura (Gucci Osteria da Massimo Bottura), a pub serving Italian craft beers and ramen (Pint of View), and a restaurant housed inside one of the city’s top butcher shops (Macelleria a Firenze Luca Menoni). Looking for the essentials? Head to the 38.

Without further ado, and in geographic order, the Eater Heatmap to Florence, Italy.

1 Kawaii

Setting up shop as Italy’s first sake bar, Kawaii is owned and operated by the team behind neighboring Japanese restaurant Momoyama on the hip drag of San Frediano. Diners will find not only a large range of sake but also plum wines, shochu, a sweeping selection of Japanese whisky, cocktails, and international beers to marry with poke bowls, rice burgers wedged with salmon or tuna tartare, spring rolls, and bao buns.

The brains behind lauded food and wine bar Enoteca Pitti Gola have opened a spinoff restaurant that offers fine wines and Tuscan food for modern appetites. Here, guests won’t just find one steak alla Fiorentina, but rotating options from different cattle breeds, along with dishes like spaghetti with braised artichokes; Florentine bechamel, ricotta, and spinach crepes; Tuscan soups; stewed wild boar; and other comfort-food classics. Osteria dell’Enoteca curates its wine wall with varietals like Brunello, Valpolicella, Barolo, and Chianti classico, while dinner is finished a complimentary post-meal digestivi (limoncello or herbal liquors) made by the owners.

Florence has had a tough time merging Italian cocktails with well-made snacks, but Manifattura has filled this void. Tucked inside the tiny Piazza San Pancrazio, Manifattura is bringing “Made in Italy” back with its 1950s decor; a bar shelf brimming with exclusively Italian beverages, like the nearly forgotten citron soda Tassoni; and timeless Italian music playing in the background. No Tiki- or Prohibition-style drinks to be found on this menu (Italy never had a prohibition). Instead, Manifattura is a nostalgic option for locals and where visitors can discover the legacy of Italian cocktails with small plates to accompany them. Think classic Italian snacks like triangle tramezzini finger sandwiches, fried chickpea fritters, and roasted chestnuts, plus heartier options like a creamy baccala whip on a Parmesan waffle and spelt flatbread piadina.

Massimo Bottura, the famed chef behind the three-Michelin-starred Osteria Francescana, has come to Florence with his first branded Osteria outside of Modena. Don’t expect Bottura’s usual degree of experimentation here — this is small-plate fare in a tea-room setting. Dishes not to miss include the Caesar salad, with dressing wedged between every layer and topped with pieces of Parmesan crisp; the marinated pork belly Taka bun; and the tortellini drenched in a Parmigiano-Reggiano cream. And while prices skew high, the restaurant is housed in the the Gucci Museum in one of city’s most historical squares, with food created by one of the world’s most acclaimed chefs. In other words, you’re paying for the location and name as much as the food.

This bistro serves up wood-fired pizzas and small plates with a well-thought-out wine list spanning obscure Italian labels and a handful of natural and biodynamic wines. The simple but satisfying menu features prosciutto and burrata starters, grilled local seafood, cacio e pepe-filled ravioli, and gnocchi with gorgonzola. Dessert is quasi-obligatory, with slabs of cheesecake with chopped pistachios and dollops of creamy tiramisu.

Europe has a tough time with authentic Vietnamese cuisine, but this Florence outpost is making earnest strides thanks in part to its chef’s close ties to Vietnam. (Representatives from Ho Chi Minh City came to oversee the early menu and kitchen training.) Here, regional Vietnamese dishes are served in a minimalist tearoom in the heart of Florence’s Santa Croce quarter. Expect delicate bowls of pho, vermicelli spring rolls, flat dumplings imbued with lemongrass, and tamarind shrimp plates. The imported tea selection includes unique lotus and artichoke varieties. Finish it off with a slice of banana-coconut cake.

Hungry market shoppers can now dine at one of city’s best butchers, Macelleria Menoni, which cooks local cuts from behind the case. Lunch here is a butcher-to-table, street-food-style experience on a tiny indoor terrace inside Mercato Sant’Ambrogio. Diners dig into hearty preparations like stewed beef in a Renaissance-style dolceforte sauce; fried meatballs; and Florence’s quintessential street food, lampredotto, or cow stomach, served on toast. To break up the protein-filled feast, sides include potatoes and a tangle of garlicky chard.

Once hidden in the outskirts of Florence, one of the city’s favorite international dining options has now opened in the central Sant’Ambrogio quarter. Ararat serves Armenian-Georgian cuisine with bottles of full-bodied Georgian wine to match. On the menu are hand-formed Georgian dumplings called khinkali, stuffed with potato or spiced ground beef; a variety of grilled meats, including Armenian lula kebab accompanied by roasted tomato and eggplant mashes; a selection of Armenian flatbreads; and Georgian khachapuri, a cheesy bread bordered by a thick, soft crust with a runny egg buried in the middle.

As the name suggests, Moderna positions itself as a modern Italian trattoria with revised twists on local classics. The menu strikes a chord between fine dining and bistro fare, featuring dishes like beef tenderloin with foie gras, guinea hen rolled with prosciutto and topped with truffle, and tagliatelle with ragu Bolognese in a Parmigiano-Reggiano fondue cream. Just off the pedestrian path yet reachable from Santa Croce, it’s worth the small detour.

Aliyev stands on site of leveled Armenian church to threaten Yerevan

PanArmenian, Armenia

PanARMENIAN.Net – When making territorial claims against Armenia for the second time in the past month, Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev was standing on the spot where once an Armenian church used to rise.

Addressing the Azerbaijanis on the beginning of Novruz, Aliyev said a big part of the territory of present-day Armenia “is the historical Azerbaijani land.”

It is noteworthy that Aliyev was standing in front of the Maiden Tower where the Armenian church of the Holy Virgin was standing up until 1990, blogger, journalist Sedrak Mkrtchyan said in a tweet.

The church was built in 1797 or 1799 at the foot of the Maiden Tower, a fortress in Baku. According to a diplomat working in the Azerbaijani capital in 1992, the church was demolished in the wake of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. Now, there is an empty space at its former site near the Maiden Tower.

Deputy foreign minister of Armenia Shavarsh Kocharyan welcomes the statement of Konstantin Kosachev, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Federation Council of the Russian Federal Assembly, according to which Russia will not continue supplying weapons to Azerbaijan with the same scale it did before the 2016 April war.

“Russia has always been the number one supplier to Azerbaijan. We know this very well. The impression from this statement is that some conclusions are made by Russia. I want to state that this statement is welcomed”, the deputy FM told reporters after the Cabinet meeting.

During a meeting with the reporters in the Armenian Parliament on March 14, Konstantin Kosachev said Russia will not continue supplying weapons to Azerbaijan with the same scale it did before the 2016 April war. He said Russia implements the contracts that were signed with Azerbaijan before April 2016.

“We are obliged to do that in accordance with these contracts. But as far as I know it will not be with the scales that existed as of April 2016. Undoubtedly, we react to the situation which took place in April 2016”, the Russian official said.

Russia regularly discusses the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement with its partners, Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said during a press briefing, in response to a question whether Russia and Turkey regularly discuss the NK conflict.

“The topic is being discussed with several our partners. The talk relates to both the Co-Chairs and the countries of the region. This is normal and is part of diplomatic work”, Zakharova said.

Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu met in Moscow on March 14.
