UEFA President pledges football support for Armenia

Friday
UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin has visited Armenia, promising UEFA’s continued backing to the country as it strives to develop and strengthen its flourishing football

Mr Čeferin was in Armenia to attend celebrations to mark the 30th anniversary of the Football Federation of Armenia (FFA). In addition to talks with senior association officials, he also met the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, and other government representatives.

The UEFA President joined FFA President Armen Melikbekyan at a ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil the renovated City Stadium in Abovyan, refurbished with the help of funding from UEFA’s HatTrick development programme. He assured the FFA that UEFA would also provide funds to enable Armenia to fulfil plans to construct a new national football stadium in the capital Yerevan.

Excellent relations

“The relations between UEFA and the Football Federation of Armenia, and specifically, between Armen Melikbekyan and myself, could not be better,” said Mr Čeferin at the stadium event in Abovyan. “I believe that being a small country, you can develop football and increase its popularity thanks to such facilities.”

“UEFA will continue to support the Football Federation of Armenia. We hope that this support will result in the building of a new national stadium in your country."

Stadium plans

Armen Melikbekyan said that the FFA planned to make use of the Abovyan City stadium – an all-seater venue with a maximum capacity of 3,100 seats – and outlined the progress being made to improve other venues across Armenia. “I hope that reconstruction work at Vanadzor City stadium will be finished in July,” he explained. “We are nearly there.”

“The [association] is also planning to install a floodlighting system in Gyumri City stadium, which will give us the opportunity to play football there in the evenings as well. International matches will be played there.”

Setting the development pace

The FFA is working diligently to improve Armenia’s footballing infrastructure, using its resources to improve facilities as it bids to bring more players, men and women, into the game. Armenia is a football country, and the FFA is eager to set the pace and encourage local teams to fulfil their potential at international level.

Armenia launched its new football strategy in 2020, with the aim of increasing participation levels by reinforcing grassroots, amateur and youth football structures. The number of registered players – in football and futsal – continues to increase annually, as the association works hand in hand with local clubs to make widespread improvements.

A significant challenge is finding good places for children to train and play, but with 39 new mini-pitches laid in the 2021/22 season, and various stadiums being refurbished, progress is on the right track.

Football’s prime place in Armenia

At the FFA’s 30th birthday event, Nikol Pashinyan underlined the impact of football in Armenia. "Football is very important for us," the Prime Minister said. "It has economic, sports, socio-psychological and political significance.

"It has a political significance because team spirit is a phenomenon that has a great [potential] to really develop in the Republic of Armenia," he added. "[We] need to develop this way of thinking, and football has an exceptional significance on the way to achieving this goal.

"Modern football is an institutional phenomenon, and I hope that through developments in football, institutional thinking will become commonplace in Armenia. I am confident that we will achieve our goals."

UEFA a 'reliable partner'

Mr Pashinyan thanked UEFA for its crucial help in taking football forward in Armenia, recognising the European body as "a reliable partner", on account of its invaluable support to football development through, among others, the HatTrick scheme. "I would like to express my appreciation for the support provided by UEFA", he said.

Ararat Mirzoyan: We see connection between Armenia-Turkey and Armenia-Azerbaijan processes

June 9 2022

Mirzoyan said this during joint news conference with the Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Yerevan.

“On the other hand, despite Turkey’s continued statements that the normalization process should take place without any preconditions, we see a connection between the Armenia-Turkey and Armenia-Azerbaijan processes – a connection that the representatives of the Turkish authorities try to find or emphasize on every occasion. We do not think this to be constructive. There are also some differences in terms of tempo,” he said.

Speaking about Armenia-Azerbaijan relations, Ararat Mirzoyan said that the negotiations are going on in several directions “with the ideas not coinciding in various issues.”

“We believe in the peace process, but in the normalization of relations, we consider it impossible not to refer to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, not to address it and not to give a political solution to that conflict. We believe that the talks should take place within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group,” the Armenian minister said.

Ararat Mirzoyan also referred to the ongoing negotiations on demarcation and border security issues.

“Saying negotiations is a bit exaggerated for this stage, but the beginning is set, the second meeting of the commission will take place in Moscow. We see some positive progress in terms of unblocking regional economic and trade infrastructure. It would be wrong to say that we have a full picture, but there is a positive shift.  Baku’s continued holding of Armenian prisoners of war and other detainees, encroachments on cultural monuments, anti-Armenian rhetoric and provocative actions only undermine these processes,” Ararat Mirzoyan said.

US State Department Report on International Religious Freedom addresses issue of Armenian spiritual heritage in territories that came under control of Azerbaijan

ARMINFO
Armenia – June 3 2022
Marianna Mkrtchyan

ArmInfo. A September Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe resolution on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict cited the "catastrophic impact" of the  long-running conflict "on the cultural heritage and property of the  region, for which both Armenia and Azerbaijan have a responsibility."  This is stated in the US State Department annual Report on  International Religious Freedom: Armenia.

The report notes, "The constitution states that everyone has freedom  of thought, conscience, and religion.  It recognizes the Armenian  Apostolic Church (AAC) as the national church and preserver of  national identity but also establishes separation of religious  organizations and the state.  The law prohibits, but does not define,  proselytism, which may be interpreted as forced conversion."

According to the report, "The trial continued of a prominent Baha'i  lawyer, Edward Manasyan, charged in 2017 with organizing illegal  immigration; Baha'i community members said they believed the charges  were brought because of his religion.  The country's highest court of  appeal, the Court of Cassation, rejected a Baha'i appeal alleging the  government had illegally wiretapped the group and used the  information gathered to prosecute Manasyan.  Yezidi human rights  activist Sashik Sultanyan was indicted on charges of "inciting  hatred" based on off-the-record comments he made to a journalist  criticizing the treatment of Yezidis in the country that were  surreptitiously recorded and posted online by the journalist.   Sultanyan's prosecution drew strong criticism from international  human rights groups.

In February, the government announced it planned to remove a course  on the history of the Armenian Church from the mandatory school  curriculum as part of a broader educational reform, generating  significant public debate.  A September Parliamentary Assembly of the  Council of Europe resolution on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict cited  the "catastrophic impact" of the long-running conflict "on the  cultural heritage and property of the region, for which both Armenia  and Azerbaijan have a responsibility." Representatives of some  religious minorities, such as the Seventh-day Adventists and several  evangelical groups, as well as the Jehovah's Witnesses, reported that  public attitudes towards them had generally improved compared with  the previous year and reported little or no negative content in the  media during the year.  Anonymous social media users, however,  continued to target the evangelical Word of Life Church with online  hate speech and harassment," the report reads.

" Some members of the Jewish community and civil society members  reported that antisemitism, including negative speech by members of  the public and vandalism, increased after Azerbaijan used  Israeli-supplied weapons during intensive fighting in the  Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in the fall of 2020.  During June  parliamentary elections, an opposition figure who had never held  elected office criticized the Word of Life Church and Jehovah's  Witnesses, referring to them as "sects," a term these religious  groups did not use to describe themselves and which was generally  perceived as pejorative.  Human rights groups stated that verbal  targeting of religious minorities, both on and offline, decreased  during the year, as the individuals who had previously targeted  religious groups largely pivoted to discussing the aftermath of fall  2020 fighting and COVID-19.  On February 12, the Holocaust and  Genocide Memorial was vandalized for the third time since the 2020  fighting.  Representatives of minority religious groups stated that  societal and family pressure remained a major deterrent for ethnic  Armenians to practice a religion other than the Armenian Apostolic  faith.  The U.S. Ambassador and other embassy officials continued to  promote religious tolerance, respect for religious minorities, and  interfaith dialogue during meetings with government officials.   Embassy representatives raised with government officials and members  of parliament the cases of criminal prosecution of Yezidi and Baha'i  leaders and monitored their trials.  The Ambassador and other embassy  officials regularly consulted with religious groups, including the  AAC, evangelical Christians and other Protestants, Jehovah's  Witnesses, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Church of  Jesus Christ), Yezidis, the Jewish community, Apostolic Assyrians,  Pentecostals, and Baha'is, and individual members of the Muslim  community, to discuss the state of religious freedom in the country.   Embassy officials engaged government officials and civil society  representatives to discuss the impact of the Nagorno-Karabakh  conflict on religious group

Armenia amended agreement with US in field of biological safety

ARMINFO
Armenia – June 3 2022
Naira Badalian

ArmInfo.rmenia has amended the agreement with the United States in the field of biological safety. On June 2, the Government of the Republic of Armenia approved the  signing of the protocol to the agreement "On cooperation in the  prevention of the dissemination of technologies, pathogens and  knowledge that can be used in the development of biological weapons",  signed in September 2010.

<The purpose of the agreement is to promote effective regulated  cooperation between the parties in this area. According to paragraph  5, Article 4 of the Agreement, the Armenian side undertakes to  transfer to the US Department of Defense the required samples of  dangerous pathogens that are collected in Armenia for preventive,  military and peaceful purposes. The agreement also provided for the  transfer of epidemiological data>, the document says.  It is noted  that, given the forthcoming adoption of the Comprehensive Law on  Biosafety and Biosecurity, which regulates the field of biological  safety and clearly establishes the absence of any obligations on the  state to transfer pathogen samples to any country, and also based on  the need to ensure a balanced policy with partners in the field of  biological security, it is proposed to amend paragraph 5 of Article  IV accordingly. "It should be noted that this is in line with the  foreign policy of the Republic of Armenia and the international  obligations assumed," the conclusion says.
