Azerbaijani press: Erdogan: Turkey opens all military archives to investigate 1915 events

8 May 2018 17:00 (UTC+04:00)

Baku, Azerbaijan, May 8

By Rufiz Hafizoglu – Trend:

Turkey opened all its military archives to investigate the 1915 events, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, Turkish media reported on May 8.

Erdogan emphasized that if one dares to declare the so-called "Armenian genocide" after the opening of Turkey's archives, then let him try to prove it based on the facts.

"There was no "genocide" in relation to Armenians in Turkey's history," he said.

Armenia and the Armenian lobby claim that Turkey's predecessor, the Ottoman Empire, allegedly carried out "genocide" against the Armenians living in Anatolia in 1915. While strengthening the efforts to promote the "genocide" in the world, Armenians have achieved its recognition by the parliaments of some countries.

‘Kanye West can help Trump recognize the Armenian genocide’ – The Wichita Eagle

Category

US hip hop artist Kanye West – husband of reality TV star Kim Kardashian – should use his relationship with President Donald Trump to contribute to the US recognition of the Armenian Genocide – Markos Kounalakis writes in an article titled ‘Kanye West can help Trump recognize the Armenian genocide’ in The Wichita Eagle.

“Armenia is not the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Kanye West and the Kardashians. Truth is, however, Kanye has always cared and sang about justice and his wife’s Armenian-American family has always felt strongly about the need to recognize one of the world’s greatest crimes and injustices — the Armenian genocide. Kanye should leverage his newfound kinship with President Trump to prod him towards doing what no other sitting American president has done: Use an executive order to declare that the murderous events of 1915 were the world’s first modern genocide”, Markos Kounalakis writes.

The author reminds that Kim and Kanye traveled to Armenia in 2015 for the Armenian Genocide centennial commemoration events.

“Modern Turkey does not like to be reminded of this historic fact. It prefers to look at the Christian Armenian deaths as unfortunate collateral damage during a World War, not a group targeted by Turks for ethnic and religious cleansing. Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatens to exact punishment from countries recognizing that genocide”.

“President Trump does not take kindly to threats. Trump is always inclined to do things differently and buck tradition”, the article said.

The author reminded that nearly 100 US lawmakers wrote Trump a letter recently urging to follow the lead of 29 countries and 48 US states in recognizing the Armenian Genocide.

“If lawmakers can’t convince Trump to recognize the genocide and his good friend Rep. Devin Nunes, whose political future hangs on the love of his Fresno Armenian-American electorate can’t do it, and if Kanye can’t do it, then who’s left? Maybe Hip Hop artists Kendrick Lamar or Nazo Bravo can find the right beat and lyrics to pull the president’s heartstrings. It’s time.”

“Yerevan-Maidan” Protests: What Happened in Armenia Was a Defeat for Democracy

Centre for Global Research, Canada
Tuesday

When 9 legislators out of 105 lead an increasingly violent movement to topple an elected government via what ultimately ended up becoming a low-intensity “military coup”, it’s usually a worrying sign that dictatorship and not democracy is right around the corner.

The Armenian Color Revolution was a success, and hyper-nationalist politician and small-time oligarch Nikol Pashinyan was able to pressure former President and now former Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan to resign from his position despite the latter’s insistence just yesterday morning that “the political force, which garnered 7-8% in the election, has no right to talk on behalf of the people” and “blackmail the state”. The end to his government came swiftly after his newfound EU allies betrayed him by demanding that the police release Pashinyan and the other arrested provocateurs (which might have included two suspected bombers), which Sargsyan promptly complied with earlier today. This coincided with hundreds of troops rushing out of their barracks and joining the “protesters”, prompting the patriotic representatives of the military to vow harsh legal punishment against all of the deserters.

Unfortunately for the constitutional order of the state, the now-former Prime Minister followed in his Ukrainian counterpart Yanukovich’s footsteps and refused to use force to resolve this Hybrid War crisis, choosing to resign instead of carry out the legal duty that was entrusted to him by his countrymen in restoring order to the streets. At this point, it’s unknown whether the conspiring troops were let out of their bases by some of their commanding officers who may have sympathized with the Californian diasporabacked Color Revolution or if they disobeyed their superiors en mass and stormed out into the streets after overpowering the guards (some of whom may have also joined in), but whatever the case may be, this incident demonstrates a serious fracture within the armed forces that will surely continue to be exploited.

The combination of potentially “rebellious” military men in the streets coupled with a minority of hyper-nationalist Color Revolution politicians who have demagogically taken control of thousands of young minds in blackmailing the state to back down before their regime change demands implies that Armenia won’t see what is superficially regarded as “Western Democracy” anytime in the near future but could worryingly see the sort of dysfunctional dictatorship that has since formed in fellow “revolutionary” Ukraine, whose “EuroMaidan” events in Kiev nearly half a decade ago closely mirror what just happened in Yerevan. As for the international implications of this successful coup, the author wrote an analysis from last week about how “The Yerevan Protests Might End Armenia’s Unconvincing ‘Balancing’ Act”, and it’s recommended that the reader at least skim through it and some of its cited articles if they’re unfamiliar with this forecast.

The gist of it is that Armenia will more than likely pivot even faster to the West like it’s already been in the process of doing now that the shadowy Gulen-like California diaspora is on the verge of seizing total control of the state by proxy and have intimidated the population into accepting the “replacement” of their Russian-friendly “oligarchs” with American ones instead. Russia stands to lose from what just happened because the Pravy Sektor-esque hyper-nationalists might conveniently attempt to redirect society’s piqued anger towards their country’s historical partner now that it’s associated with the disgraced Sargsyan after President Putin ironically congratulated him last week for “[his] appointment to this responsible post (which) reaffirms [his] high political authority and broad support for the reforms aimed at solving the socioeconomic challenges facing Armenia.”

No matter how “convincingly” the globally powerful Armenian diaspora (and especially those headquartered in California) attempt to “spin” America’s latest Color Revolution success as a “victory for democracy and the people”, it shouldn’t be forgotten that Sargsyan caved in the face of EU pressure just like Yanukovich did and allowed his government to be toppled by a political force that he himself hypocritically said approximately 24 hours before his fall was only representative of 7-8% of the population and “had no right to talk on behalf of the people” or “blackmail the state”. It can only be speculated what happened in the intervening day to get him to so quickly change his mind, though it might have had something to do with the low-intensity “military coup” that began to unfold by what may have been “rebellious” troops.

Either way, democracy didn’t win in Armenia today – dictatorship did – and the future of the country hasn’t looked bleaker in recent memory, though just like in the immediate aftermath of “EuroMaidan”, the majority of people there haven’t realized it yet and some of them never will.

Armenian community representative: Baku gave no explanations why Estonian was expelled Armenian community representative: Baku gave no explanations why Estonian was expelled

15:34, 13.04.2018

The Azerbaijani foreign ministry gave no explanations to Estonia after the Estonian citizen of Armenian origin Karine Oganesyan had been expelled from Baku airport, the head of the Tallinn Armenian Cultural Society Razmik Ivanyan told reporters.

His remark came during Estonia-Armenia video conference on Friday.

As reported earlier, Estonian citizen, capital Tallinn City Council member Karine Oganesyan was expelled from Baku airport. Karine Oganesyan traveled to Baku on March 23, to attend an international conference of pedagogues.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan gave no explanations to Estonia yet,” Razmik Ivanyan said.

Oganesyan had been issued an official Azerbaijani electronic visa, and she headed to Baku as an Estonian delegation member.

But upon arrival at Baku airport, Azerbaijani authorities detected her Armenian origin, did not allow her entry to Azerbaijan, detained her for 12 hours in a special zone, and then sent her back to Estonia.

Turkish Press: Turkey, Azerbaijan aim to improve judicial cooperation

Turkey, Azerbaijan aim to improve judicial cooperation

16:43 Anadolu Agency

Turkey and Azerbaijan are aiming to consolidate bilateral judicial cooperation, according to Turkish justice minister on Tuesday.

Abdulhamit Gul met his Azerbaijani counterpart Fikret Memmedov as part of his official visit to the country.

Gul said the projects that are realized with the view of “one nation, two states” — such as the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway project and Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) — were part of efforts to boost Turkish-Azerbaijani relations.

Stressing that political and economic stability provides growth, he said both countries achieved much to become stronger. “We hope the cooperation to be in the best level.”

Speaking about Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Gul said: “We believe that Azerbaijan’s demands in this issue are rightful. Turkey supports Azerbaijan in this regard and it will continue to do so.”

Azerbaijan and Armenia remain in dispute over the occupied Karabakh region. Karabakh broke away from Azerbaijan in 1991 with Armenian military support, and a peace process has yet to be implemented.

“Our biggest problem is Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. We have always seen support from Turkey in this matter,” said Azerbaijani Justice Minister Memmedov.

He also touched on the issue of Turkey’s defeated coup in July 2016 and said the incident shook them as well, but the Turkish nation had shown that they were on the side of democracy, development and justice.

Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) orchestrated the defeated coup of July 15, 2016 in Turkey, which left 250 people martyred and nearly 2,200 injured.

Noting that Azerbaijan is benefitting from Turkey’s experience in judicial subjects, Memmedov said around 220 agreements have been signed between the two countries in different fields.

There are 30 more agreements in preparation phase, he added.

– 'Turkey's strength is Azerbaijan's strength'

Justice Minister Gul also met Azerbaijan’s President of the Court of Cassation Ramiz Rzayev.

Expressing his pleasure with the fact that his first official visit abroad was to Azerbaijan, Gul said: “We will increase cooperation in the field of judiciary like in all other fields.”

Turkish-Azerbaijani brotherhood is going to last forever, he added.

Rzayev, for his part, reiterated that both countries support each other. “Turkish education institutions have big role in educating, especially, our judges,” he added.

Rzayev also praised Turkey’s success in Syria’s northwestern Afrin, as its center was liberated from terrorists during Turkey’s Operation Olive Branch. “Turkey’s strength is our strength.”

Turkey on Jan. 20 launched Operation Olive Branch to clear terrorist groups from Afrin, northwestern Syria, near Turkey's border, amid growing threats from the region.

On March 18, Turkish-backed troops liberated the town of Afrin, which had been a major hideout for the terrorist organization PYD/PKK since 2012.

The Turkish Armed Forces are working to restore normal daily life in Afrin by providing necessary humanitarian aid to the region.

A total of 1,096 terrorists were “neutralized” in March as part of the operation, enabling civilians to return to their homes.
