Resistance Movement coordinator: Armenian people told whole world that they are masters of their destiny, future

NEWS.am
Armenia – May 1 2022

Over the passing week, the Armenian people have proved that they have stood up and reject the political line of the authorities of the day. Resistance Movement coordinator Ishkhan Saghatelyan—the National Assembly deputy speaker from the opposition "Armenia" Faction and a representative of the Supreme Body of the opposition Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) Dashnaktsutyun Party of Armenia—stated this at the opposition’s huge rally Sunday at France Square in downtown Yerevan.

"The [incumbent] authorities have no mandate to lead the country to new concessions. Record number two: the Armenian people took to the streets together and told the whole world that they are the masters of their destiny and future, the Armenian people decide that they are the masters of Artsakh [(Nagorno-Karabakh)], they are the masters of Armenia, proved that the fate of the Armenian people does not depend on [Azerbaijani president Ilham] Aliyev and [Armenian PM] Nikol [Pashinyan],” he added

Saghatelyan noted that May 1 is a historic day for Armenians: the beginning of unity and final victory.

"In a very short period of time, we shall subject that capitulator to capitulation; this is the task before us," he said, referring to PM Pashinyan.

And at the suggestion of Ishkhan Saghatelyan, the participants of the rally observed a minute of silence in honor of the victims of the 44-day Artsakh war in the fall of 2020.

The members of the Resistance Movement had started marches to Yerevan from four provinces. And Artur Vanetsyan—the leader of the "With Honor" Faction of the National Assembly and chairman of the opposition Homeland Party—, his supporters, as well as several other opposition political forces have joined them at France Square.

Three ex-Armenian FMs join Artsakh statement

Panorama
Armenia –

Three former Armenian foreign ministers, including Raffi Hovhannisian, Vartan Oskanian and Ara Aivazian, have joined a statement on Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), Armenian-Azerbaijani and Armenian-Turkish relations.

The document, which is also supported by a group of Armenian intellectuals, scientists and artists, stresses that the Artsakh issue, which is based on the right of nations to self-determination, cannot become a “subject of bargaining” under any circumstances.

"The status of the Artsakh Republic, including the Hadrut and Shushi regions, the uninterrupted and free communication between Armenia and Artsakh, the return of Armenians to their places of permanent residence, the security of the Artsakh Armenians and constant work with the Russian peacekeeping mission should become our foreign policy priorities," the statement says.

"Only a modern and efficient Defense Army of Artsakh and the Armenian military can guarantee Artsakh’s security. Armenia's security is directly linked to the security of Artsakh.”

The authors stress that the issue of the Armenian Genocide is indisputable in the negotiation process with Turkey without preconditions, adding the effectiveness of the Armenian-Turkish dialogue cannot be conditioned by Artsakh’s status and the final settlement of the security issues in Artsakh.

“In order to effectively fulfil these nationwide tasks, it is necessary to use the diplomatic arsenal which hasn't been exhausted yet, the full potential and unity of all Armenians. Putting aside all differences, it is necessary to voice nationwide disagreement with anything threatening Armenia and Artsakh and to stand up for our national and state interests and dignity," reads the statement.

Going green in Armenia

By Nick Thompson

Founded in 2016, OHM Energy is a technical company with green credentials, helping its customers find quality renewable energy solutions across Armenia. With support from the EBRD and the EU, the business recently underwent a rebrand, with the implementation of a new website and marketing strategy to help it grow.

OHM Energy’s co-founders, Sevak Gevorgyan (CEO), Hrant Gnuni (CFO) and Gevorg Hakhverdyan (CCO), met in their student years in 2004 when they were just becoming acquainted with the nuances of the energy sector and beginning to realise how much work there was to do in the sphere.

As post-graduates, confronted with the realities of climate change, they continued conducting laboratory research and writing scientific articles, mainly focusing on the renewable energy sector, and became specialists in the field. Fast-forward to 2016 and it was time to bring their practical scientific experience to the world of business through the establishment of OHM Energy.

Among other things, the company implements solar power station installations, energy efficiency measurements and other electrical projects throughout the country. During a challenging 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic took hold, the company nevertheless managed to build the largest solar power plant in Armenia, with a capacity of 6 MW.

Identity, influence and messaging

In its bid to become a leader in the local energy market and persuade prospective customers of the merits of renewables, OHM Energy’s co-founders reached out to the EBRD for support. Having identified what was required to reach those goals, we facilitated a tailored marketing plan and sales strategy to solidify the company’s commitment to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles.

The cornerstone of the project was to increase the accessibility of relatable and succinct information about solar energy and energy saving for the general population through the new website. This was an unmitigated success and, in Gevorg’s words, led to “a big increase in customer engagement, and consequently the growth and development of our business”.

Building on the newly developed marketing strategy, the company also invested in digital technologies including implementing automated systems for customer service and improving the company's workflow.

The company name refers to the German physicist Georg Ohm, who discovered the fundamental law later named after him, where the ‘ohm’ is the standard unit of electrical resistance. The logo uses the omega symbol ‘Ω’, which often denotes the end of something – in this case, of old energy systems. Visually, although unintentionally, it also looks like a depiction of the sun meeting a solar panel. The branding reflects the company’s commitment to solar energy and communicates the virtues of solar over conventional energy systems.

Green growth

Armenia now allows excess electricity generated from solar panels to be sold to its electricity grid, and along with the EBRD’s Green Economy Financing Facility, which helps Armenian businesses invest in high-performing technologies, there is plenty of potential to scale up the renewable energy programme in the country.

Since the EBRD’s intervention, OHM Energy has become one of the top five companies in its field. It has seen a dramatic increase in sales and turnover and its operations have profited greatly from tax and other benefits promoted by government energy efficiency measures, resulting in higher demand for its products locally.

The company also acquired exclusive rights to represent the leading German solar panel manufacturer AE SOLAR in Armenia, which will help it stay competitive and achieve its green energy goals in Armenia and beyond.

“We have a number of developing programmes and envisage becoming an international Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor,” says Gevorg. “We already have several agreements in Georgia and are starting to cooperate with a number of international companies.”

And that is not all: the company also wants to expand into the distribution of solar pumps in Armenia, to popularise the use of electric cars, and to move into the construction of smart houses.

OHM Energy’s overarching vision is “to ensure progress that will guarantee the sustainable development of present and future generations by harmonising and balancing environmental issues”.

In an increasingly crowded market, with government incentives and competition fuelling innovation and decreasing the costs to become more sustainable, there has been a sea change in people’s attitudes towards green technologies, and companies which are driving our shift to renewables, like OHM Energy, are essential in ensuring that a brighter future starts with today.

YEREVAN, 18 APRIL, ARMENPRESS. On April 20-22 at the Armenian Genocide Museum Institute an international scientific conference will be held entitled “The challenges of teaching of Armenian genocide in 21st century”. The director of Armenian Genocide Museum Institute Harutyun Marutyan said at ARMENPRESS media hall that 29 reports will be presented. The reporters are from different institutions of Armenia and there are participants also from the United States, Lebanon, Israel, Rwanda, Cambodia, Spain, Russian Federation.

“It's one thing what we think, another thing is what the professional community thinks. It is very important to listen to the opinion of our partners: researchers, pedagogues. Today the information about the past is presented to children. Since the memories of the Armenian Genocide are one of cornerstones of our identity, it is very important, that the information not only be about the past, but a transition will be made to present. We should understand how it is possible to do so. The issue is what is educated and how is educated. Absolutely no task is set to strengthen the stereotype of victim, on the contrary, knowledge will be offered that will create a feeling of pride in the student. It will be presented how the Armenian people were able to resist with weapons, fight without weapons, survival, win. Those are important features, which should be presented to the children at that age'', said Harutyun Marutyan.

Here are the teachers, researchers who will try to find gaps, share experience, offer solutions.

YEREVAN, APRIL 15, ARMENPRESS. The government of Armenia defined a tariff privilege for electric vehicles being imported to Armenia.

Minister of Economy Vahan Kerobyan said at the Cabinet meeting that back in March, 2022 the Eurasian Economic Commission Council adopted a decision that granted every member state a certain amount of quotas for imports of e-cars as part of customs-tariff privileges.

“Within this framework imported electric cars are exempt from customs duties. Armenia has taken 7000 quotas given that the number of electric vehicles being imported is significantly rising,” Kerobyan said, adding that the privilege will cover 6400 cars because they want to keep a certain reserve for brand new cars, the import of which takes longer.

The decision takes effect against e-cars imported since January 1, 2022, and persons who’ve imported since then are entitled to apply to the government and receive their payments back. The decision is in effect for companies as well, but since March 31.

Armenia has a quota of 8000 e-cars for next year, he added.

PM Pashinyan underscored that thus the first 6400 electric vehicles to be imported to Armenia will be exempt from customs duties.

“Let me remind that back in 2019-2020 the imports of electric cars was exempt from value added tax. This means that electric cars can be imported to Armenia 32% cheaper than ordinary cars with internal combustion engines. Therefore I think this is truly a very good opportunity for electric cars to be imported to Armenia. I’d like to emphasize that naturally this is also a good occasion to make investments in electric re-charging and maintenance sectors, which is very important,” the PM said.
