“They can now take by backpacks or deliver in some way. The system says corruption has disappeared. What does it mean? Those people who robbed, where is this money? Does it enter the state budget? It is not seen.

Asbarez: ANCA-WR and ANCA-Arizona Announce Artsakh Advocacy Events

Artsakh Advocay Day to take place in Arizona

PHOENIX, Ariz.—Staying true to their mission to advance grassroots advocacy for Artsakh, among other Armenian American priorities, the Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region and ANCA-Arizona will be hosting two town halls and a legislative advocacy day during February 16 to 18.

“Situated on the eastern edge of the Armenian Highland, the Republic of Artsakh is one of the twin states of the Armenian homeland and needs the Armenian Diaspora’s support to continue thriving as a free and democratic country and to effectively counter Azerbaijani aggression. With little encouragement, Arizona’s Armenian community has the potential to become a politically-vibrant voice and an effective advocate for Artsakh,” remarked ANCA-WR chair Nora Hovsepian, Esq.

“In recent years, Arizona has become a primary target for dictatorial Azerbaijan’s lobby, and many state legislators have accepted junkets to boost the Aliyev regime’s propaganda efforts, which is why the Armenian American citizens of Arizona should reverse the trend of some of their lawmakers serving as mouthpieces for a regime that jails journalists, beheads civilians, and desecrates sacred sites,” continued Hovsepian.

The Phoenix Town Hall, which aims to educate local grassroots on the ongoing struggles of Artsakh, will be hosted at 4:30PM on Saturday, February 16 at the Armenian Center, located at 13043 N Cave Creek Rd, Phoenix, Arizona 85022.

The Scottsdale Town Hall, which will likewise educate the community on Artsakh, will be held following the Sunday, February 17 Divine Liturgy at the St. Apkar Armenian Apostolic Church, located at 8849 E Cholla St, Scottsdale, AZ 85260.

Following the two town halls that will educate, motivate, and activate Armenian American grassroots, the Monday, February 18 Arizona State Capitol Advocacy Day will start at 8:00AM and continue throughout the day with legislative and executive meetings. Armenian American activists, community members, and supporters interested in participating in the Advocacy Day must register online.

“ANCA-Arizona is excited to work hand-in-hand with ANCA-WR leadership, our community, and other stakeholders in promoting awareness of Artsakh among our elected officials to help bring peace for our Armenian brothers and sisters living under constant threats from Azerbaijan,” remarked Angela Heisel, ANCA Arizona chair. “Having family roots from Nakhichevan, another Armenian region that was cleansed by Azerbaijan of its indigenous Armenian population by the 1990s and where all ancient Armenian churches and cross-stones have been since wiped out, we can’t let that happen again with Artsakh — and the Armenian people cannot afford another genocide and destruction of its history,” continued Heisel.

For updated details on all Artsakh advocacy-related events that will take place in Arizona in the month of February, follow the ANCA-Arizona social media page.

The Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region is the largest and most influential Armenian American grassroots advocacy organization in the Western United States. Working in coordination with a network of offices, chapters, and supporters throughout the Western United States and affiliated organizations around the country, the ANCA-WR advances the concerns of the Armenian American community on a broad range of issues.

Theatre: London features riveting play on Armenian Genocide

Big News Network
Jan 24 2019

Next week will see the premiere of a new London production of "Beast on the Moon". This highly acclaimed play on the aftermath of the Armenian Genocide has been commissioned by Finborough Theatre and will be performed between 29 Jan and 23 Feb., 2019, MassisPost reports.

The setting is Milwaukee in the 1920s. A survivor of the Armenian Genocide, Aram, believes he will begin a new life when his teenage 'mail-order' bride, Seta, arrives to join him. They are a couple united by history – both survivors of the Armenian Genocide. But their painful, shared experience does nothing to promote domestic harmony as Aram is obsessed with creating a family to replace the one he lost in such savage circumstances, and Seta, just fifteen and trapped by the traditions of the old ways, struggles to embrace her new life in a new country.

Beast on the Moon was last performed in the United Kingdom at Battersea Arts Centre in 1996 to much acclaim. "Richard Kalinoski's small, quiet play has a big, unashamedly sentimental heart as it charts Aram and Seta's difficult marriage and explores how it is possible to live when all the rest of your family have died " said The Guardian (London). "The past finds a sort of closure, but the author's skill has kept us on tenterhooks throughout, uncertain whether any happy outcome can be possible" said The London Times Online and "Humane, funny and touching, 'Beast on the Moon' presents the claims of both past and future with fairness and empathy" commented The Independent (London)

The organisers of the play, sensitive to their subject matter, have included a number of post-performance discussions on the Armenian Genocide and its enduring legacy. They will be hosted by Ara Sarafian (Gomidas Institute), Misak Ohanian (Centre for Armenian Information and Advice) and Sally Gimson (Index on Censorship). Asbarez: ANCA Burbank Meets with Burbank Mayor

ANCA Burbank members with Mayor Emily Gabel-Luddy

BURBANK—On January 10, two members of the ANCA Burbank Executive Board Silva Kechichian and Annette Kargodorian, and ACF representative Antranik Jarchafjian met with Burbank City Mayor Emily Gabel-Luddy.

We were pleased to learn from Ms Luddy that the funding for the city of Burbank will not have any reduction for the coming year and the government shut down hasn’t had much of an effect yet on HUD or CDBG subsidies.

We discussed Burbank’s friendship city with Hadrut, Artsakh, and we asked that the city update its web page to indicate friendship city relation between Hadrut and Burbank. We also discussed getting the city’s assistance in encouraging large businesses in Burbank to help us meet the needs of Hadrut’s children through monetary donations or school supplies.

The City Council will present the Genocide Recognition Proclamation on April 16, 2019 followed by a vigil on the steps of City Hall.

We requested statistics about Armenians in the city work force. There has been an increase of Armenians in number and rank in the Burbank police department. We would like to increase involvement in all areas of the city. There are approximately 10 commissions or boards that occasionally need qualified volunteers. The ANCA Burbank will encourage Armenian Burbank residents to serve on these commissions. Open positions are posted on the city website.

The mayor mentioned that the population of Burbank is about 105,000 with 150,000 jobs. So opportunities are ample.

She requested that the ANCA Burbank look into possibly including the Boys and Girls Clubs in the Youth Center activities and also to provide a list of books for the libraries dealing with Armenian topics, culture, history in English and Armenian as well as Armenian newspapers.

We informed the mayor that the ANCA has and will continue to have joint presentations with the Burbank Unified School District, particularly dealing their Wellness Program. We also mentioned that the Youth Center has had a basketball D League which includes children of all nationalities. The Center has served as a shelter during fires, as a voting precinct for the community, and as a partner with BTAC in providing food baskets for the needy families in Burbank. Ms. Kechichian, ANCA Burbank Chair said, “Although our focus is primarily to promote Armenians and Armenian issues, we encourage and assist all Burbank residents in any way can. We want greater civic participation in this great city.”

“Armenians have always been a creative and contributing community in Burbank, and it’s very important to recognize the Genocide and the peoples’ resilience,” noted Mayor Gabel-Luddy.

The Armenian National Committee of America—Burbank advances the social, economic, cultural, and political rights of the area’s Armenian community and promotes its increased civic participation at the grassroots and public policy levels.

Armenian and Azerbaijani foreign ministers expected to meet later in January

ARKA, Armenia
Jan 8 2019

YEREVAN, January 8. /ARKA/. The official Yerevan has received a proposal of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs suggesting that Armenian and Azerbaijani foreign minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan and Elmar Mammadyarov have another meeting, a press secretary for the Armenian Foreign Ministry Anna Naghdalyan said.

Mnatsakanyan and Mammadyarov had their latest, third meeting in early December 2018 in Italy’s Milan to have a deeper look into the positions and approaches of the parties concerning the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

"The OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs submitted a proposal to hold a meeting of foreign ministers in January," Naghdalyan said.

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict erupted into armed clashes after the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s as the predominantly Armenian-populated enclave of Azerbaijan sought to secede from Azerbaijan and declared its independence backed by a successful referendum.

On May 12, 1994, the Bishkek cease-fire agreement put an end to the military operations. A truce was brokered by Russia in 1994, although no permanent peace agreement has been signed. Since then, Nagorno-Karabakh and several adjacent regions have been under the control of Armenian forces of Karabakh. Nagorno-Karabakh is the longest-running post-Soviet era conflict and has continued to simmer despite the relative peace of the past two decades, with snipers causing tens of deaths a year.

On April 2, 2016, Azerbaijan launched military assaults along the entire perimeter of its contact line with Nagorno-Karabakh. Four days later a cease-fire was reached. -0-
