Armenia’s Ayb School shortlisted for Martela EdDesign Award

PanArmenian, Armenia

PanARMENIAN.Net – The architectural project of Ayb School – a private educational complex in the Armenian capital city of Yerevan – has been shortlisted for a Martela EdDesign Award.

The creators of the new academic building of the Ayb school sought to build a cozy and innovative building.

Designed by Storaket Architectural Studio, the building practically does not require heating and consumes very little energy. The installation is thoroughly scrutinized. For example, despite the fact that the ground floor is 8 meters below Earth’s surface, the rooms have access to natural light.

The School has 11 entrances and exits so that children can stroll around the premises freely all year round, regardless of the weather.

Those standing behind the project have paid due attention to safety, having carefully worked out the evacuation system.

Winners will be announced on April 19 in the framework of the Martela EdDesign Conference in St. Petersburg.

Sargsyan attends World Chess Candidates Tournament grand opening as honorary guest

YEREVAN, MARCH 10, ARMENPRESS. President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan, who also serves as President of the Chess Federation of the country, attended the grand opening of the Candidates Tournament 2018 in Berlin on March 9.

The Armenian president was the honorary guest at the event – an acknowledgment for Armenia’s contribution to the development and outreach of chess.

President Sargsyan delivered remarks at the inauguration of the chess tournament, the President’s Office said.

Ullrich Krause, president of Germany’s Chess Federation and FIDE Vice President Georgios Makropoulous also delivered opening remarks.

World Chess President Ilya Merenzon and Vice President of the Russian Chess Federation Andrei Guryev – the organizers of the event – delivered speeches as well.

At the end of the opening ceremony the 8 renowned chess players who will compete at the tournament were introduced.

ARMENPRESS presents the full transcript of the president’s remarks:

“Dear Mr. Makropoulous,

Dear participants of the tournament,

Ladies and gentlemen,

Today is a major event for global chess – the Candidates Tournament is beginning, which is highly anticipated by millions of fans around the world.

I believe this is a unique destination for the chess giants present here today, who only hours later will kick off this giant tournament for the right to challenge world champion Magnus Carlsen.

I am proud and also grateful to the organizers for having the chance to make the first symbolic move at this tournament, as the best appreciation for the contribution which our country has had for the development and outreach of chess. Although Armenia is not a big country by size and population many believe it to be a chess superpower, because in the past several years the national chess team of Armenia, which also includes the current candidate Levon Aronian, has captured three Olympic titles and one world champion title.

Chess is a unique game which has been tested by time. It is very much similar to life where the final result greatly depends on the moves which you’ve done, while after the game all pieces – be it a King or an ordinary pawn, are stored in the same box. Perhaps this is the reason that for many centuries mankind loves to play chess, is discovering its new and hidden sides, is trying to uncover the endless secrets and depth of this wise game.

Chess is a game, but also an art and science. It teaches the culture of accurate calculation and thinking, creativity and honest competition. It forces to deeply respect your opponent. Realizing the positive impact of chess on children’s reasoning, flexibility and development of creative mind and other features, Armenia became the first country in the world to include chess in its national curriculum.

I can happily state that our society accepted this with great excitement and the positive results can already be felt. Certainly, we are happy that the Chess In Schools program is being spread in other countries too.

The world’s first scientific research institute of chess was opened in Armenia this year. We hope that the studies and activities of the institute will discover the yet unknown sides of chess.

Dear friends,

The World Chess Federation, which today unites 189 countries, bears great responsibility in developing and spreading chess, by being a highly important chess body.

I would like to thank FIDE for the continuous and productive cooperation with Armenia’s chess federation and wish new achievements.

I would like to take this opportunity to also thank the Berlin City Hall and the organizers for giving us this chess fest. Holding the tournament at the high level will be a great contribution and stimulus for global development of chess.

Dear chess players,

This tournament is unique by its nature. The best of the best are competing for the title of candidate. Here the difference between the first and second places is huge because the winner will continue his struggle for the chess crown. But the participation in the tournament itself is already a great honor for any chess player which proves great chess mastery. For many it is a dream and life goal to be among these eight chosen ones. Each of you has deserved this place as a result of lengthy and persistent struggle by overcoming difficult selection phases.

I am sure that this tournament will be tense but also interesting, and we will witness numerous beautiful and meaningful games.

Being in the homeland of renowned chess player, 2nd world champion Emanuel Lasker, who held the chess throne for 27 consecutive years, I would like to conclude my speech with his advice: “When you see a good move, look for a better one”.

I wish all of the candidates success, and may the strongest win.

Thank you.”

Sumgait Pogrom Plotters Have Not Been Punished, Says Nalbandian

Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian addresses at the 37th Session of the UN Human Rights Council

GENEVA—Armenia’s Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian, in remarks delivered Tuesday at the 37th Session of the UN Human Rights Council, said that those who plotted the savage Sumgait pogrom of Armenians 30 years ago have not been punished. He also said that Armenia will be presenting a resolution on the genocide prevention to mark the 70th anniversary of the adoption of UN Declaration on Human Rights and Genocide.

“Thirty years ago, during these very days in February 1988 anti-Armenian pogroms broke out in Azerbaijani city of Sumgait leaving numerous Armenians killed, maimed and deported. They were perpetrated by the authorities of Azerbaijan with the aim to punish Armenians for the peaceful aspirations of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh for self-determination. Those atrocities were the very reason why Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Andrei Sakharov wrote that ‘even if some doubted it before Sumgait, no one sees a moral opportunity to insist on territorial unity of Nagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaijan after this tragedy happened,’” said Nalbandian.

“Regrettably, the masterminds and perpetrators of this crime were not duly punished. As it happened many times in the human history, impunity opened the door for new atrocities, including Armenian massacres and ethnic cleansing in Baku, Kirovabad (Gandzak), Maragha and many other places,” added Nalbandian emphasizing that despite wide international condemnation at the time, the lack of action by world leaders led to impunity.

He said that Azerbaijan uses all efforts and means to deny and distort history by using “fabricated accusation” to concoct the scenario of what Baku calls the “Khojaly campaign.”

By all means Azerbaijan attempts to conceal these atrocities, to avoid responsibility and to shift attention from them through fabricated accusations, including by the so-called Khojaly campaign, trying to portray themselves as victims and discredit Armenians as alleged perpetrators of the violence.

“It is a part of Azerbaijan’s xenophobic anti-Armenian policy. The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, European Commission Against Racism and Intolerance and many other organizations in charge of human rights expressed concern at constant cases of hate speech in Azerbaijan used against Armenians by political leaders, educational institutions and media and that an entire generation of Azerbaijanis has grown up listening to this hateful rhetoric. It is this kind of anti-Armenian propaganda that has incited continuous atrocities against Armenians, including the gross violations of international humanitarian law committed by the armed forces of Azerbaijan in April 2016 in Nagorno-Karabakh – killing of children, women, elderly people, mutilation of the corpses, beheadings of captured soldiers in the style used by notorious terrorist organizations,” explained Nalbandian.

“It is perplexing that the perpetrators of such horrendous crimes are consulted for their consent on the engagement of international organizations and the provision of the humanitarian assistance. The people of Nagorno-Karabakh should not be deprived from cooperation with the human rights’ organizations due to the objection of Azerbaijan, a country notorious for the violations of the very human rights,” added Nalbandian.

“Belated reaction, delayed assessment of the situation, the absence of preventive measures – constitute gaps between proclaimed commitments and their implementation on the ground. Indeed, ‘a right delayed is a right denied,’” said Nalbandian.

Agos Editor-In-Chief considers Armenian Patriarchate's statement in
current nationalist atmosphere in Turkey understandable

YEREVAN, JANURY 25, ARMENPRESS. Edward Danzikian, Editor-In-Chiefof
Istanbul’s Armenian Agos newspaper, says in the circumstances of the
current heated nationalist atmosphere in Turkey, the statement of
Istanbul’s Armenian Patriarchate over the ongoing Turkish military
operations in Syria’s Afrin is understandable.

In an interview with ARMENPRESS, Edward Danzikian commented on the
fact that several members of the Armenian community negatively reacted
to the statement of the Armenian Patriarchate. “At the moment there
are strong nationalists winds in Turkey, and in such circumstances if
any national minority structure makes a statement supporting the
state, the remaining structures as well as feel a duty to do the
same”, Edward Danzikian said.

He stated that they have witnessed a lot of similar statements in
1980-1990, the violence period following the military coup attempt in
Turkey. “In this sense it seems nothing has changed in Turkey. Of
course such statements cannot be supported by everyone, but on the
other hand, we should not forget that even those people are arrested
in Turkey who announce by social media that they do not want war”, he
said, reminding that dozens of people, who opposed Turkey’s military
operations in Afrin, are currently arrested or detained.

“Therefore, it is both incorrect to say that “Armenians support the
Patriarchate’s statement” and make a generalization stating that
“Armenians do not support it”. In such circumstances usually the
Patriarchate has supported the state. But also it’s an undeniable fact
that many consider the Patriarchate’s statement on this topic as
wrong”, Edward Danzikian said.

The Turkish armed forces launched military operations, called Olive
Branch, against the Kurds (PYD) in Syria’s Afrin.

The Armenian Patriarchate issued a statement expressing support to
these operations and adding that they will pray for “peace and calm
the humanity needs so much”.

Official Ankara welcomed the Patriarchate’s statement.

Christmas congratulations. May your families be blessed with much
happiness, homely warmth, love and solidarity in the New Year!

As usual, we summarize the outgoing year in the run-up to the New

in 2016, and positively different from the indicators of other
countries in the region. To cope with all the problems facing the
country, we must work hard and ensure sustainable growth every year.

No one will develop and build the country for us.

Armenia is to be a logical and prosperous country, optimistic and
confident about the future. We need an atmosphere of tolerance in the
country; mutual respect and consolidation around the goal of
developing the country.

Every one of us can take a share in that nationwide drive for
consolidation. Anyone, who protects the country and works hard,
studies, wakes up early and is thoughtful of his surroundings and the
country, as a whole, should feel wanted by his fellow countrymen.

We can develop our country together and, as a result, have a powerful,
equitable, well-developed and prosperous Armenia strong with
ever-growing and happy population.

Dear Compatriots,

On this festive days, I suggest that you fill up your homes with
