Pianist Sahan Arzruni Performs at South Milwaukee PAC

by David Luhrssen

Pianist Sahan Arzruni has full command of the usual classical repertoire. Along with many years playing the “straight man” alongside Victor Borge, Arzruni has amassed an extensive discography including recordings of Haydn and Bartok. But for his upcoming concert at the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center, he will reach beyond Chopin’s familiar etudes or Brahms’ piano concertos. At the South Milwaukee PAC, Arzruni will explore classical music with roots in Armenia, an ancient land at the rim of Asia and Europe. Specifically, he will perform works by a trio of composers from three nations where Armenians have lived: Aram Khachaturian (Soviet Union), Komitas Vartabed (Turkey) and Alan Hovhannes (USA).

The concert takes place at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 at the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center, 901 15th Ave., South Milwaukee. General admission tickets are $25 with proceeds benefitting the Fund for Armenian Relief. For tickets, visit www.southmilwaukeepac.org or purchase at the South Milwaukee PAC box office.

You will be performing work by the following composers at your Milwaukee concert: Aram Khachaturian, Alan Hovhannes and Gomidas Vartabed. Tell me about them.

Komitas is the fountainhead of new Armenian music. Without Komitas, you would not have Hovhaness or Khachaturian as you know it. In the 1890s, Komitas, a celibate cleric, wandered from village to village and collected folk songs—he notated them, he analyzed them, he organized them.

Komitas then recreated them in a format that would be accessible to urban Armenians, Armenians who lived in the cities, who were exposed to western music. Komitas “arranged” the folk songs in such a way that they seemed as if they belonged to the concert stage rather than come from the mouths of the peasants. He set them for chorus, and he construed them for voice and piano. But he did it in a way that the melodies stayed true to their Armenian roots, the songs remained authentic to their Armenian nature.

In addition, Komitas composed a number of dances for piano based on Armenian folk tunes. The concert program will include a number of them in order to give the audience a taste of Komitas’s music.

Hovhaness learned about Armenian music when he was appointed organist at the Watertown Armenian Church in Massachusetts in the early 1940s. The music he composed prior to 1942 was European in character. He learned about Armenian secular music from Yenovk Der Hagopian, a troubadur from Van, a city in Eastern Anatolia where Armenians lived for thousands of years.

I consider Alan Hovhaness to be a direct disciple of Komitas. During his intense studies of Armenian sacred and secular music, Hovhaness internalized Komitas’s music, the underlying principles of Komitas’s composition and the essentials of his aesthetics. Similar to Komitas, Hovhaness’s music also relies on monophony – a single melodic line – non-western meters, and Middle Eastern melodic patterns.

Most of the music Hovhaness composed until the mid 1950s stayed true of these basic principles. Afterwards he expanded the modes of _expression_ into Indian, Korean, Japanese and other Asian cultures. I will present a number of works by Hovhaness from his “Armenian Period.”

Aram Khachaturian is the Armenian musical ambassador to the world at large. It is unlikely that Khachaturian would enjoy his popularity without the support he received from the Soviet Union. While in New York for concerts in the 1970s, at a press conference, a reporter identified him as a Russian composer. Infuriated, Khachaturian roared, “I am not a Russian composer, I am a Soviet composer, a Soviet Armenian composer.”

Khachaturian did not have a single music lesson until he was 19 years old. When he was kicked out of the Moscow University for failing grades, he managed to enter the Gnessin School of Music. His prodigious ability to compose opened the door to the Moscow Conservatory. There he learned the essentials of composition. His music is known for its surging melodies, throbbing rhythms, and piquant harmonies.

Yet, Khachaturian’s music remains Armenian to the core. Every summer he would travel to Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, invite folk musicians to his house and would listen to them play and sing folk material. There are many examples in his music, where he uses portions of Komitas’s music,

Aside from their ethnic heritage, is there anything linking Khatchaturian, Hovhannes or Gomidas? Is there an “Armenian musical heritage” that all three composers shared?

All three composers were intimately familiar with Armenian folk music. In a folk song, the text comes first and the melodic contour takes shape according to the accents—the prosody—of the language. Armenian is an independent branch of Indo-European languages and has existed since the second century at the latest. That is how Komitas, Hovhaness and Khachaturian are interconnected, inextricably interconnected. Just remember: every independent language has a unique prosody, an inherent system of accentuation, that is reflected in its folk songs.

What do you tell non-Armenians to encourage them to listen to this music? Of course, Khachaturian is familiar to classical music listeners (and Sabre Dance is well known beyond those circles)—but what about Hovhannes and Komitas?

Just expose yourself to their music. Khachaturian’s music is fetching. Easy to love, easy to like. There is an energy that is infectious. Alan Hovhaness’s music is hypnotic. He is the first New Age music composer. There is nothing complex about his music. It’s direct. It is forthright. Komitas requires dedication. It is so sparse, you have to listen to it with concentration, dedication, and empathy. But Komitas is the mother of all Armenian music. You need to penetrate Komitas in order to enjoy Hovhaness and Khachaturian.

William Saroyan House Museum opens in central Fresno

13:09, 01 Sep 2018

The Fresno home where Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and playwright William Saroyan lived out his final years is now open to the public as an interactive museum, Fresno Bee reports.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2729 W. Griffith Way on Friday afternoon came on what would have been Saroyan’s 110th birthday.

The museum features a hologram of Saroyan and a setup of his desk and part of his home as it was when he lived there. The rest of the house is filled with photos, videos and interviews taken of Saroyan throughout the years, posters of his work and his drawings.

Saroyan was born in Fresno in 1908 and died at the Veterans Hospital in 1981 of cancer. He purchased the home on Griffith Way 17 years before his death and split his time there and abroad, according to his biography.

The Renaissance Cultural and Intellectual Foundation, based in Armenia, purchased the house in 2015 and set out to renovate it to honor Saroyan and the Armenian community.

Councilwoman Esmeralda Soria and Mayor Lee Brand were in attendance for the grand opening. The museum is in Soria’s district.

Soria said Saroyan grew up in what is now downtown Fresno because of a city law that blocked immigrants from owning or living in certain areas.

“Despite all of this, Saroyan still felt and left his heart here in Fresno,” she said.

The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Armenian national team coach Vardan Minasyan announced the squad list for the upcoming Nations League visit to Skopje where Armenia will match Macedonia in what is supposed to be a clash for the table top.

Unlike the Macedonian coach who called up only 18 players Minasyan summoned 23 of which three goalkeepers. On the list is Tigran Barseghyan, the attacker of Vardar who should be Armenia’s secret weapon. Only Alik Arakelyan is debutant, while there are few foreign players of Armenian origin like Jordy Joao, André Calisir and Ivan Yagan who debuted earlier this year.

Armenia this year played four friendlies, two of them before the World Cup unlike Macedonia who opted to be inactive that period. However, Armenia’s record in those four friendlies is disappointing as they played three draws (0:0 vs. Estonia and Moldova, 1:1 vs. Malta) and a 1:0 defeat by Lithuania with only one goal scored.

Students’ Offer: Bicycles instead of cars (video)

Before the start of the academic year, students have their own proposal for the fight against September-traffic jams: going to class on bicycles. “Restart” Student-Civic Initiative announced the start of the bike ride today.

The students suggest that instead of heavy and challenging cars, people can drive light bicycles, which will also solve the problem of being late from the classes.

An experienced cyclist Gayane Alexanyan remembers a rumor that Yerevan is not a city to drive a bicycle.

“They often treat bad cyclists badly, they think cyclists are disturbing them, and in pavement, cyclists disturb pedestrians,” she says.

Student biking will become more frequent. An attempt will also be made to include more people, including lecturers, government representatives, and more.

More information is in the video.

Aram Shahbazyan to not go on hunger strike – Aravot.am (video)

Director Aram Shahbazyan said during a conversation with www.aravot.am that he would start a hunger strike, and the reason was that Ministry of Culture was not financing his Chghchghik film more than 10 years. On the morning of August 22, he really started a hunger strike at the entrance of the Ministry of Culture, with posters of “Who stole the Chghchghik,” “Clean the art from the bureaucracy “and “Unlimited Hunger Strike.”

Chghchghik is the production of four countries: Armenia, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Germany. In 2003-2006, the film won a $ 75,000 grant and 110000 Euros grant for the filmmaking support program of the Armenian National Cinema Center. Producers are Ara Mnatsakanyan and Melik Karapetyan. The post-production work of the film is incomplete and despite it, the film center has adopted it in its balance and, according to Aram Shahbazyan, “solve” documenting issues. Details are in the video.

Minister Hasmik Poghosyan made a decision to provide additional funding for the Chghchghik to complete the production work, according to which the film center transferred 3382500 drams to “Mosfilm” for digitizing the film rolls and moving them to Armenia. In 2017, the National Cinema Center Council of Armenia has again debated the quality of the film and has again decided to cover the production costs and finish it.

YEREVAN, JULY 31, ARMENPRESS. It’s already more than two weeks there is no information about Armenian citizen Karen Ghazaryan who appeared in the Azerbaijani territory still for unknown circumstances, Armenian foreign ministry spokesperson Tigran Balayan told reporters at a press briefing, reports Armenpress.

“By grossly violating the Article 106 of the Geneva Convention on the protection of civiliansin time of war, Azerbaijan till now has not allowed the representatives of the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) to visit him [Karen Ghazaryan]”, Tigran Balayan said.

He reminded that Armenian Ombudsman Arman Tatoyan issued a statement on this matter.

“This issue is in our spotlight, the works continue”, the MFA spokesman said.

On July 15, 2018 the Azerbaijani defense ministry announced that it pushed back, with the formulation of the Azerbaijani media, a sabotage group of the Armenian Armed Forces in the direction of Qazax region, and one of the group members was taken captive. Sero Khanzadyan’s library missing today

During Sero Khanzadyan’s lifetime, his home in Goris, which he built himself, famous adults were gathering often there, talking, organizing literary evenings. After his death, the house was sold, was later bought by the state, and became known as a house-museum. It was renovated for several times, and  was opened officially in the framework of the “Goris CIS Cultural Capital” event several days ago.

Khachik Harutyunyan from Goris remembers Sero Khanzadyan since his childhood. He had been there many times with his father. He remembers how they were working, but they were talking with each other much more.

“Many things have disappeared from Khanzadyan’s personal belongings, very few things have been saved from the house, then his son brought some things, his sister donated things. But the manuscripts are almost absent, he had a wonderful library of 24,000 pieces of books that do not exist today,” says Khachik Harutyunyan regretfully. According to him, there are many unfinished works to do.

“He was a man of extremes, but he was a great Armenian and not only a great Armenian, but also a too Armenian. Armenia began from Adam and Eva for Sero Khanzadyan,” Khachik Harutyunyan recalls.

Former President Serzh Sargsyan’s nephew suspected in murder attempt

The Investigative Committee of Armenia resumed the preliminary investigation of the criminal case initiated on the case of Yerevan resident Davit Simonyan’s receiving gunshot wound in April 2007.

Hayk Sargsyan is suspected in Davit Simonyan’s murder attempt.

On July 4 the National Security Service agents searched the apartment of Alexander Sargsyan, brother of third President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan. After the search Alexander Sargsyan and his son Hayk Sargsyan have been detained.

On April 1, 2007, the Police were notified that Yerevan resident Davit Simonyan, born in 1984, has been hospitalized with a gunshot wound.

On the same day, A. Ghevndyan presented a gun to the Police and told that he fired shots as a result of carelessness, injuring his friend D. Simonyan.

Criminal case has been launched into the incident. But on May 28, 2007, a decision was made not to launch criminal proceedings against A. Ghevondyan on the grounds of absence of complaint.

However, on July 3, 2018, the Prosecutor General’s Office made a decision to eliminate the aforementioned decision. As a result of investigative operations, it was revealed that Davit Simonyan received a gunshot wound not by A. Ghevondyan, but by Hayk Sargsyan.

Investigation continues.
