Turkey Jails Armenian Journalist Hrant Dink’s Killer

TURKEY JAILS ARMENIAN JOURNALIST HRANT DINK’S KILLER

July 25, 2011

(RTTNews) – A court in Turkey on Monday sentenced a Turkish man to
22 years and 10 months in jail for the murder of ethnic-Armenian
journalist Hrant Dink more than four years ago.

The juvenile court in Istanbul sentenced 21-year-old Ogun Samast after
finding him guilty of shooting dead Hrant Dink outside his office in
Istanbul in January 2007. He was charged with murder and possession
of illegal firearms.

Samast’s trial was held at the juvenile court as he was a minor while
committing the crime. Samast, a Turkish ultra-nationalist, had admitted
to killing Dink soon after the incident. Samast was only 17 when he
shot dead Dink.

At the time of his death, Dink was the the chief editor of the
bilingual Turkish-Armenian weekly newspaper Agos. Dink had angered
Turkish nationalists by referring to the mass killings of Armenians
by Ottoman Turks in the early 20th century as a case of “genocide.”

Dink had received several death threats before his eventual
assassination. In addition to Samast, several others are also facing
trial for conspiracy over Dink’s murder. Several police and security
officials were given jail terms in June for failing to protect Dink
despite having information about the assassination plot.

The European Court of Human Rights had ruled last year that the
Turkish government had failed to protect Dink’s life despite being
aware of the murder plans of Turkish ultra-nationalists. The court
also ordered the Turkish government to pay a compensation of about
$170,000 to the journalist’s family for failing in its obligation to
protect Dink from the death threats.

Norway Massacre: Breivik Manifesto Makes Appeal To India’S Hindu Nat

NORWAY MASSACRE: BREIVIK MANIFESTO MAKES APPEAL TO INDIA’S HINDU NATIONALISTS
Ben Arnoldy

Alaska Dispatch

July 25, 2011

The Norwegian terrorist Anders Behring Breivik writes in a
manifesto that he acquired some 8,000 e-mail addresses of “cultural
conservatives” not just across Europe but North America, Australia,
South Africa, Armenia, Israel, and India – ensuring scrutiny of
anti-Muslim groups far beyond Europe.

Mr. Breivik’s primary goal is to remove Muslims from Europe. But his
manifesto invites the possibility for cooperation with Jewish groups
in Israel, Buddhists in China, and Hindu nationalist groups in India
to contain Islam.

“It is essential that the European and Indian resistance movements
learn from each other and cooperate as much as possible. Our goals
are more or less identical,” he wrote.

In the case of India, there is significant overlap between Breivik’s
rhetoric and strains of Hindu nationalism – or Hindutva – on the
question of coexistence with Muslims. Human rights monitors have long
decried such rhetoric in India for creating a milieu for communal
violence communal violence, and the Norway incidents are prompting
calls here to confront the issue.

“Like Europe’s mainstream right-wing parties, [India’s] BJP has
condemned the terrorism of the right – but not the thought system
which drives it. Its refusal to engage in serious introspection, or
even to unequivocally condemn Hindutva violence, has been nothing
short of disgraceful,” writes senior journalist Praveen Swami in
today’s edition of The Hindu.

“Liberal parties, including the Congress, have been equally evasive
in their critique of both Hindutva and Islamist terrorism,” he adds.

Last week, Breivik detonated a bomb in downtown Oslo and opened fire
at a youth camp of the ruling political party, killing at least
76 people. He reportedly said in court today that the rampage was
“marketing” for his manifesto, “2083: A European Declaration of
Independence.”

The manifesto Breivik’s 1,500-page manifesto calls preserving
traditional European culture by cutting it off from immigration from
the Muslim world.

While he is against setting up a Christian theocracy, he envisions a
revival of Christendom, where the church helps unify Europeans around
a shared cultural identity.

In the manifesto, Breivik references India dozens of times. He
included a five-page paper written by a man named Shrinandan Vyas
that argues the Muslim invaders committed a “genocide” of Hindus in
the Hindu Kush region of present-day Afghanistan. Efforts to track
down Mr. Vyas have failed.

Invasions by Muslims into South Asia did include bloodshed, but use
of the term “genocide” is highly controversial.

But for B.P. Singhal, a retired BJP member of Parliament and noted
Hindutva writer: “There was a wholesale massacre.”

He goes on to cite dramatic drops in the Hindu populations in Pakistan
and Bangladesh since Partition of British India – figures that Breivik
also gives in his manifesto. Mr. Singhal and Breivik share a critical
belief: Muslim majorities always subjugate religious minorities.

“I was with the shooter in his objective, but not in his method,” says
Singhal of Breivik. “If you want to attract the nation’s attention,
surely you need to do something drastic and dramatic, but not killing
people.”

.But Singhal goes on to say violence must be fought with violence. He
says people upset by violent responses to Islam must “go one step
more to find why [Breivik’s] violence came in. Why was that western
Christian talking in bad terms about Islam?” He says it’s because
of violent verses in the Koran that continue to be preached in an
intolerant way.

Singhal said India and Norway should deny voting rights to foreigners
or “foreign religionists,” meaning Muslims. That would solve the
“bane of democracy,” says Singhal, where politicians who are strict
with groups like Muslims are voted out.

Breivik also proposed curbing voting rights within democracy, and both
men view their ideological opponents in the media and universities
as communists.

Singhal has not corresponded with Breivik, nor does he see much need
for alliances to counter Islam’s spread: “Every country will have to
find its own solutions,” he says.

It’s unclear as of yet who Breivik reached out to in India and what
the depth of the interactions was. His manifesto says he is among 12
“knights” fighting within a dozen regions in Europe and the US, but
not India. It’s not known yet whether this group, which he calls the
Knights Templar Europe, actually exists.

Breivik describes months of tedious work farming “high quality” e-mail
addresses off the Internet by friending networks “representing all
spheres of cultural conservative thought” on Facebook, then acquiring
members’ e-mail addresses. The goal appeared to be to generate a list
to send his manifesto to just prior to his rampage.

Officials in India’s Home Ministry would not comment on whether
they are tracking down Breivik’s e-mails to India. Mr. Swami, who
has sources inside India’s intelligence community, told the Monitor
that India does not have the capacity to do those traces easily until
Norway provides information from Breivik’s computers.

“I’ve been trying to ask around if anyone knows about a substantial
correspondence of any kind and haven’t come up with anything,”
says Swami.

The Internet has made it easier for extremists to follow one another
internationally, he points out. But, historically, European and Indian
far right groups have not worked with each other – nor do they have
much practical reason to cooperate now.

“I think irrespective of the Norwegian [attacks], the government needs
to keep a much closer eye on the activities of the Hindu fundamentalist
groups … and crack down on hate speech whether it’s Hindu, Muslim,
or otherwise,” says Swami.

YEREVAN. – Armenian historical monuments on the territory of Iran are
under State protection, said historian, expert in Armenian culture
Samvel Karapetyan on Monday.

Armenian working group visited Iran for one month on June 10 in a
framework of a joint project with Iranian counterparts. The group
visited four of former Armenian provinces – Parspatunik or Karadag,
Artaz (Maku), Khoy, Zarevand (current Salmast) and passed Urmia
(Kaputan).

“We have been in 4 provinces. The diversity and the amount of monuments
is the same as in Armenia, Karabakh or Western Armenia.

These territories are inhabited by Azerbaijanis or Kurds, we met
Armenians only in Salmast,” said Karapetyan. “Historical Armenian
lands are abundant not only with churches but also fortresses,
especially belonging to the era of Kingdom of Van.”

The scientist added that several thousands of Armenian monuments have
been preserved in Iran. The group managed to photo and videotape around
4000 of them. In future these materials will be used for photo albums,
books and movies.

TURKISH COURT JAILS MAN FOR 23 YEARS FOR KILLING OF ARMENIAN JOURNALIST

Voice of America
July 25, 2011

A Turkish court has sentenced an ultranationalist to almost 23 years
in prison for the assassination of an ethnic Armenian journalist more
than four years ago.

In Monday’s ruling, the juvenile court in Istanbul convicted
21-year-old Ogun Samast of murder and illegal firearm possession for
shooting Hrant Dink outside his office in January 2007. Authorities
prosecuted Samast as a minor because he was 17 at the time of the
attack. The court sentenced him to 22 years and 10 months in jail.

Dink was the chief editor of the bilingual Turkish-Armenian weekly
newspaper Agos when he was assassinated. He had angered Turkish
nationalists by describing the mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman
Turks in the early 20th century as a “genocide.”

Turkey rejects the term and says the collapse of the Ottoman Empire
triggered unrest that killed large numbers of Turks as well as
Armenians.

Turkish authorities have prosecuted dozens of people in connection
with Dink’s assassination, including security personnel accused of
ignoring intelligence of ultranationalist plots to kill the journalist.

Dink family lawyer Fethiye Cetin welcomed Monday’s sentencing, telling
the Reuters news agency that it will act as an important deterrent
to such crimes.

The European Court of Human Rights ruled last year that Turkish
authorities should pay Dink’s family $170,000 in compensation for
failing to protect him from the death threats.

Uriah Heep will release a career retrospective concert album and DVD,
Live in Armenia, on September 23.

The album was recorded from a stop on the extensive tour undertaken
on the back of the band’s 40th anniversary Celebration album, which
featured new studio recordings of 12 of their classic tracks as well
as two new songs. That tour saw them play over 250 shows in a year.

When they were booked to play in Armenia for the first time, the band
were approached by TV and film crews to document the concert.

“It was unique because it was a first for us, and the fact that our
music meant so much to so many people, was just wonderful,” guitarist
Mick Box said in a statement. “It cannot get any better than that.

There were some technical problems to overcome, as we played on hired
equipment, but the emotion of the night won through, and if asked,
we would indeed go back and play again.”

Armenia

YEREVAN. – The relations between Baku and Ankara have recently spoilt
and the concept “one nation-two states” does not work, political
expert Richard Giragosian told a press conference in Yerevan on Monday.

He stressed that the whole Turkish establishment is aware of mutual
antipathy of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Azeri
President Ilham Aliyev.

“It is conditioned by the fact that Turkey is constantly changing
and Azerbaijan’s non-constructive position on the Karabakh conflict
resolution, Baku’s constant blackmail to Ankara in terms of regional
policy is getting on Turkish leader’s nerves,” Giragosian emphasized.

Anders Behring Breivik On Turkey-Committed Genocides

ANDERS BEHRING BREIVIK ON TURKEY-COMMITTED GENOCIDES

Tert.am
25.07.11

After questioning Anders Behring Breivik, who carried out a massacre
on an island youth camp and a bombing in the capital Oslo, in which
at least 93 people died, law-enforcers found a 1,518-page document,
a “manifesto” entitled 2083: A European Declaration of Independence,
in his flat.

In his “manifesto” Breivik also mentioned Sultan Abdulhamid,
masterminds behind the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire Talaat
Pasha, Enver Pasha and Cemal Pasha the “manifesto” also mentions
Turkey’s policy of annihilating national minorities, the activities
carried out by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the Establisher of the Republic
of Turkey, as well as incumbent Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan’s
policy, issue of Turkey’s membership in the European Union, the Cyprus
problem and Treaty of Sèvres.

In the course of history, Turks have massacred millions of Christians
and converted hundreds of thousands into Islam. Turks are among the
world’s most ‘genocidal’ national. They committed Armenian, Greek
and Assyrian genocides, Breivik wrote in his “manifesto”.

As regards the Turkish premier’s policy, Breivik notes that Erdogan
is trying to convert Turkey into Islam, apply the sharia law in the
country and cause it to return to its Ottoman past.

Breivik strongly objects to Turkey’s membership in the European Union,
stressing that assisting Turkey in joining the EU means assisting
jihad.

Why establish relations with a nation wishing to destroy the EU,
asks Breivik. He also calls for expelling Turkey from NATO.

In his “manifesto” Breivik also writes that Armenians’ historical
lands must be returned to them. eastern Anatolia must be returned to
Armenians and western Anatolia to Greeks, and a war must be started
for Christianizing the territories again, Breivik writes.

Indian men lose narrowly to Armenia in World team Chess C’ship

Ningbo (China) July 24 2011

The Indian men went down to leaders Armenia by a minimal 1.5-2.5
margin in the sixth round of World team Chess Championship here.

A game-changing novelty by Levon Aronian on the top board against P
Harikrishna paved the way for the Armenians to go ahead and while the
Indians did well to hold on the remaining boards, the lone victory
gave them another two points.

In the process, the Armenians also stretched their lead to two points
after nearest rivals Russia and Hungary were held to draws by Ukraine
and United States respectively.

Apart from Armenia, hosts China were the only other winners as the
match between Israel and Azerbaijan also ended in a 2-2 draw. China
trounced Egypt 3.5-0.5 to come back in medal contention.

With Armenia on ten points out of a possible 12, Russia and Hungary
are still close behind on eight points apiece and it seems that the
battle for the gold is only between these three teams.

Ukraine and China share the fourth spot on seven points each while
Azerbaijan and United States have six points for a shared sixth spot.

Israel is on five points while Indians remained on three points after
the debacle against Armenia. Egypt is still to open their account.

BAKU: The latest figures on ethnic minorities in Azerbaijan

Yeni Musavat, Azerbaijan
July 16 2011

Country: The latest figures on ethnic minorities in Azerbaijan have
been made public”

[translated from Azeri]

While elaborating some indicators of the latest population census in
Azerbaijan, the ethnic composition of the population has also been
defined. Deputy Chairman of the State Statistics Committee Rauf
Salimov revealed this information in a reply to an inquiry of
modern.az website. During the 13-22 April 2009 national census, every
polled person defined his/her ethnicity and mother tongue voluntarily,
the committee said. The ethnicity and the mother tongue of the
children were recorded as their parents wished. Here is the latest
official information about the ethnic composition of the population in
Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijanis – 8,172,800 people (91 per cent); Lezgis – 180,300 (2 per
cent); Armenians – 120,300 (1.3 per cent); Russians – 119,300 (1.3 per
cent); Talis – 112,000 (1.3 per cent); Avars – 49,800 (0.6 per cent);
Turks – 38,000 (0.4 per cent); Tatars – 25,900 (0.3 per cent); Tats –
25,200 (0.3 per cent); Ukrainians – 21,500 (0.3 per cent); Saxurs –
12,300 (0.1 per cent); Georgians – 9,900 (0.1 per cent); Jews – 9,100
(0.1 per cent); Kurds – 6,100 (0.1 per cent); Qrizs – 4,400 (0.04 per
cent); Udins – 3,800 (0.04 per cent); Xinaliqs – 2,200 (0.02 per
cent); other ethnic groups – 9,500 (0.1 per cent). As stated above,
the national census was held from 13 to 22 April 2009 and the people
were asked to identify their ethnicity. Those polled indicated their
ethnicity voluntarily.

The same number of the Nagornyy Karabakh Armenians was stated as in
the 1999 census. In 1999 they were 120,700 people. The inquiry of
Modern.az website to the State Statistics Committee was about the
number of Armenians outside Karabakh as well as in Baku. However,
while responding to the inquiry on the ethnic composition of the
population, the State Statistics Committee did not reply to that
question. Obviously, Armenians living in Baku either concealed their
ethnicity or indicated other ethnicity during the latest national
census. For instance, as Azerbaijanis, Russians or other… [ellipses
as given]

The State Statistic Committee told our website that there has been a
considerable growth in the population since the latest census.
According to the information, as of 1 July 2011, this number has
reached 9.1m people.
