Pavlyuchenko hat-trick powers Russia past Armenia

(Reuters) – Roman Pavlyuchenko struck a hat-trick to give Russia a
valuable 3-1 win over Armenia in European Championship qualifying
Group B on Saturday.

Russia, who went into the game level on points with Ireland and
Slovakia at the top of an impossibly tight group, fell behind when
Brazilian-born Marcos Pizzelli, who received Armenian citizenship in
2008, scored in the 25th minute.

Russia, who drew 0-0 with Armenia in Yerevan in March, equalised
almost immediately with Pavlyuchenko’s well taken volley.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker made it 2-1 just before the hour after a
quick passing exchange between captain Andrei Arshavin and Igor
Semshov on the left wing before sealing the win with a 73rd-minute
penalty after Yuri Zhirkov was fouled.

The win lifted Russia up on to 13 points from six matches, with
Slovakia hosting Andorra and Ireland playing away to Macedonia in
later games.

Armenia remain fourth on eight points.

Monument to Turkish-Armenian friendship replaced by that to cheese

June 04, 2011 | 16:19

The municipality of Kars continues dismantlement of the monument to
Armenian-Turkish friendship which Erdogan called `monstrous’.

Simultaneously, the municipality decided to erect monument to famous
sort of cheese `Kashar’.

The municipality has sent messages to the Union of Artists informing
of an intention to erect monuments to cheese and honey, Haberturk
reports. Height of the monument will be 1.5 meters, while width – 2.1
meter, and the monument to honey with height of 3.3 meters and width
of 1 meter.

Talking to Haberturk, Mayor of Kars noted that the monuments to cheese
and honey will be installed in different parts of the city that will
be a kind of advertising of city’s production.

Armenian-Turkish friendship commented on this decision.

Condom-use errors frequent among Armenia’s sex workers

June 04, 2011 | 00:59

The research revealed correlates of condom-use errors among female sex
workers in Armenia.

Results of `Predictors of condom errors among sex workers in Armenia’
study published on the website of International Journal of Std & Aids,
showed condom-use errors were reported by 78.0% of participants.

The survey was conducted among 117 street-based female sex workers aged 20-52.

Number of clients, higher frequency of condom application on clients
by female sex workers, greater perceived barriers to condom use,
elevated depressive symptomatology and having sex while drinking
alcohol were significantly associated with higher number of condom-use
errors, the research says.

`Condom-use errors are prevalent in this population, thus attenuating
the intended protective effects of condoms. Interventions with female
sex workers in Armenia should specifically address the factors
identified in this study toward the goal of reducing condom errors and
ultimately preventing acquisition of STIs including HIV,’ the
statement reads.

Chorord Inknishkhanutyun: Armenian salt expected in China?

June 04, 2011

Management of the Avan salt mine is looking for ways to establish
contacts with China to supply large quantities of iodized salt to the
country, the Armenian Chorord Inknishkhanutyun newspaper writes.

New business program was inspired by panic in China regarding
necessity to struggle with radioactive elements caused by the accident
at Japan’s Fukusima 1 NPP.

Chinese are buying iodized salt, as in contrast to the infected sea
salt, it helps the body overcome radiation effects.

Despite the ongoing advocacy by the Chinese authorities that there is
no radiation threat, salt disappeared from store shelves in Beijing
and several provinces.

`According to rumors, Ghukasyan was so inspired that thought Armenian
salt is not enough and it is necessary to buy salt in other countries
and then resold it to China,’ the newspaper writes.

Clinton and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov before
their meeting in Washington D.C. on June 3.

Secretary Clinton: Well, good afternoon. It’s a real pleasure for me
to welcome my colleague here in Washington once again. The minister
and I have had the great opportunity of meeting on numerous occasions
in the last two-plus years of the Obama Administration, and I just
want to underscore the strategic importance of the relationship
between the United States and Azerbaijan and the range of issues that
we are working on together – bilateral issues, regional issues, even
global issues. We are very committed to broadening and deepening our
relationship and we are also committed to continuing to work through
the Minsk Group to try to resolve the longstanding conflict in
Nagorno-Karabakh.

So we will have a lot to talk about this afternoon, but it is a
pleasure to see you once again.

Foreign Minister Mammadyarov: Thank you very much, Madam Secretary.
You said whole agenda – (laughter) – now I just want to add that I am
totally subscribed to it, and I believe that the relations between
Azerbaijan and the United States is developing quite well. I’ll just
mention that the nature of it is a strategic one. Of course, we need
to even more deepening and strengthening our cooperation. Thank you
very much for all the words of trying to bring more peace and
stability to the region, particularly the resolution of
Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh problem. There was a recent
statement by the presidents which I believe also helpful from the
point of view that this unresolved conflict is on the screen of the
international community.

Secretary Clinton: Indeed.

FM Mammadyarov: And we all together have to work harder to make a breakthrough.

Secretary Clinton: Thank you. Thank you, Elmar.

FM Mammadyarov: Thank you very much.

Secretary Clinton: Thank you very much. Thank you all.

June 4, 2011 – 12:53 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – The U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) has
selected Black & Veatch to work with the government of Armenia to
design a sustainable program that will strengthen the Republic of
Armenia’s human and veterinary biological threat reduction
capabilities and the public health system.

The project is the first time DTRA has selected a contractor to
provide program design for a country before contracting for program
implementation, Black & Veatch said in a press release.

`Black & Veatch has been working with DTRA continuously for more than
18 years, implementing cooperative threat reduction programs across
former Soviet Union countries, including Ukraine and Russia,’ said
Matthew Webber, Black & Veatch Vice President and Program Manager.
`Our experience in implementing these programs will provide tremendous
value to DTRA as we work to design Armenia’s program.’

The project is part of DTRA’s Cooperative Biological Engagement
Program (CBEP) to combat bioterrorism and prevent the proliferation of
biological weapons-related technology, pathogens and expertise. The
program also aims to enhance host governments’ disease surveillance
systems to detect and report bioterror attacks, epidemics and
potential pandemics.

`Infectious disease and deadly pathogens are not bound by borders. Our
work with DTRA as part of the CBEP helps make these countries, and
therefore the entire global community, more secure in the fight
against bioterrorism,’ said Bill Van Dyke, President of Black &
Veatch’s Federal Services Division.

Turkey sacrifices friendship with Armenia for cheese and honey

June 4, 2011 – 16:34 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Cheese and honey monument will be erected instead of
the Monument to Humanity, the symbol of Turkish-Armenian friendship in
Kars province of Turkey. Visiting Kars on January 8, Turkish Prime
Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan reportedly described the monument as a
`monstrosity’ that overshadows a nearby Islamic shrine.

As the head of the local municipality Nevzat Bozkus said, Kars is
known as a manufacturer of cheese and honey which may greatly
contribute to the popularization of the province, APA reported, citing
Haberturk. `After the cost of the monument is assessed, a construction
tender will be announced,’ he said.
