ANDRANIK MARGARIAN: STRENGTHENING OF ARMENIA-IRAN RELATIONS IS FAVOURABLE FOR WHOLE REGION

Noyan Tapan News Agency, Armenia
Sept 12 2006

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 12, NOYAN TAPAN – ARMENIANS TODAY. Strengthening of
the Armenia-Iran relations does not only arise of the two countries’
interests but is also favourable for the whole region. RA Prime
Minister Andranik Margarian stated about it, receiving on September
11 the delegation headed by Gholam Ali Haddad Adel, the Majlis Speaker
of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Expressing satisfaction, particularly, with activization of bilateral
mutual visits of different levels, the sides expressed confidence
that the agreements reached during the RA President’s visit paid to
Iran in July, 2006, and signed documents of different characters will
successfully be implemented soon.

In the Prime Minister’s words, the balanced policy of Iran towards
neighboring countries is one of important factors of a peaceful
settlement of conflicts existing in the region, of keeping stability.

The Iran Majlis Speaker emphasized that taking into account
centuries-old traditions of the historic past and political, economic,
cultural generalities, existence of independent and powerful Armenia
is beneficial for his country as well, and assured that Iran is ready
to deepen relations with Armenia in the most different spheres from
now on as well.

As Noyan Tapan was informed by the RA Government’s Information and
Public Relations Department, Andranik Margarian and Gholam Ali Adel
are of the same opinion that the cooperation between the legislative
bodies of Armenia and Iran secures good bases for cooperation of the
two countries’ executive power as well.

The interlocuters expressed satisfaction especially with results of
bilateral cooperation in the energetic sphere, emphasizing importance
of construction of the Iran-Armenia gas pipe, building of hydroelectric
power station on Araks river, high-voltage transmission line,
emphasizing numerous other programs in a number of spheres as well.

The meeting participants mentioned that existence of the Armenian
community of great number in Iran also assist development of the
Armenian-Iranian relations. The Prime Minister expressed satisfaction
with the country authorities’ traditional warm attitude towards the
Iranian Armenian community, one of bright displays of which, in his
words, is presence of two deputies of the Armenian community in the
IRI Majlis. Andranik Margarian particularly mentioned the Iranian
authorities care and attention as well in the issue of keeping the
Armenian historic-cultural monuments in the territory of the country.

Georgian Rebel Region To Vote On Independence

GEORGIAN REBEL REGION TO VOTE ON INDEPENDENCE

TBILISI, Sept 11 (Reuters) – Georgia’s breakaway region of South
Ossetia said on Monday it will hold a referendum on independence
in November, in a move that is likely to escalate tensions between
Russia and Georgia.

"South Ossetia will hold a referendum on independence on November 12,"
Tamara Kelekhsayeva, a spokeswoman for the South Ossetian leadership,
told Reuters by telephone.

The question will be "whether you agree or not that South Ossetia
should preserve its present status of an independent state and be
recognised by the international community," she said.

South Ossetia, a tiny region tucked away next to Russia’s southern
Caucasian border, fought a brief war in the early 1990s for
independence from ex-Soviet Georgia and is a frequent source of
tension between Moscow and Tbilisi.

After that conflict, South Ossetia voted for independence in a
referendum in 1992. It was not immediately clear why a new referendum
was needed.

Georgia accuses Russia of propping up the rebel province’s rulers and
its parliament in July accused Moscow of trying to annex the territory
together with Abkhazia, another breakaway province of Georgia.

Tension has risen since Mikhail Saakashvili was elected Georgian
President in 2004 and vowed to re-unify his country.

"This is political absurdity as this referendum will have no legal
force," Besarion Jugeli, one of the leaders of the United National
Movement party, which has a majority in the Georgian parliament,
told Reuters.

Russia has peacekeeping troops in South Ossetia. Moscow says they
keep the two sides apart, while Tbilisi complains that they side with
the separatists.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, at a meeting with scholars on
Saturday, said that if Serbia’s breakaway province of Kosovo was
given independence then ex-Soviet regions seeking self-rule should
also being given independence.

Putin mentioned South Ossetia and Abkhazia, the Dnestr region that
broke away from Moldova in the 1990s and Nagorno-Karabakh, a separatist
region of Azerbaijan, according to people at the meeting.

Dnestr will hold a referendum on September 17 to confirm
independence. The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe
(OSCE) has said it would not recognise the vote.

GERMAN PARLIAMENTARIAN: TURKEY HAS TO RECOGNIZE WHAT IT HAD DONE TO ARMENIAN PEOPLE DURING OSMAN EMPIRE

Berlin, September 4. ArmInfo. Turkey has to recognize the crime
against the Armenian people during the Osman Empire, Jorg Tauss, the
member of Social-Democratic party of Germany, the deputy Chairman
of the German-Caucasian Parliamentary Friendly Group, told ArmInfo
correspondent during the press-conference in the German Bundestag.

The politician noted that Germany is interested in a stable development
of the South-Caucasian region. "Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia are
of interest to Germany from the viewpoint of economy and politics
first of all. This interest is not limited only by oil availability
in Azerbaijan, the region is of interest from the viewpoint of
geographic position, strategic importance and closeness to Iran",
he noted. According to him, the region is also considered a cradle
of mankind, which is of great interest. "The discussions at the
political level are being held on the problem between Armenia and
Azerbaijan around Nagorno Karabakh conflict, as well as the closed
borders and relations with Turkey. All the listed aspects adversely
affect the development of relations", the German Parliamentarian
said. "The secret is in a combined development of countries of the
South Caucasus as a region in whole ", Jorg Tauss said. He added that
"Armenia-Turkey closed borders is a scandal since all the countries of
the South Caucasus, including Azerbaijan, suffer", the politician said.

Boxing: Abraham Is A German. IBF Middleweight Champion With New Nati

ABRAHAM IS A GERMAN. IBF MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION WITH NEW NATIONALITY AS OF NOW

EastsideBoxing.com
Sept 4 2006

04.09.06 – Markus Beyer has lost a title – but without having
competed in a fight… the super middleweight champion can no longer
call himself the "only German boxing champion." From this time on a
second German is in possession of a world championship belt – Arthur
Abraham. For a long time the Armenian-born with the worldwide hardest
punch of all middleweight boxers had to wait for his naturalization
document and the passport with the golden eagle.. Today both documents
have been handed over to him at the resident´s registration office in
Berlin Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf – the 26th year old Sauerland-boxer
had to relinquish his Armenian nationality instead.

Arthur Abraham: "I was born in Armenia, my roots are there – but I
grew up in Germany", says the IBF champion being under contract to
the Sauerland team since 2003. "Here I made something of myself.

Therefore I owe everything to Germany. I like living here. Germany
is my home and that´s final."

Markus Beyer smilingly accepts the title loss. "I´m pleased for
Arthur", the super middleweight champion says. In October he has to
provide for the greatest challenge of his career by competing against
Mikkel Kessler in Kopenhagen. "Now there are two German boxing world
champions. And we hope that´s final."

A statement of the German Olympic Sports Association (DOSB) has
been necessary for the complicated procedure of granting the German
nationality. This has been granted but it has run into difficulties.

Athletes resident in team sports have top priority to the DOSB
concerning naturalization. Therefore "single combatants" like Arthur
Abraham have a harder time of it. Finally Berlin´s domestic senator
Ehrhard Korting gave helpful support. He himself fought for the
champion successfully.

The champion is going to defend his title on 23rd September in
Wetzlar. The defence against the Colombian Edison Miranda having been
planed for last Saturday in Oldenburg had to be postponed because of
Abraham´s illness. After the walk in a string quartet will play the
German national anthem in honor of Abraham. "Einigkeit und Recht und
Freiheit (unity and justice and freedom)" – and Arthur may enjoy this
moment with a complete new feeling.
