Despite its theme, the rooms are not hobbit-size.

DILIJAN (Reuters) – Located at the foot of one of Armenia’s mountain ranges is "Cozy House" – a small hobbit-themed hotel that attracts hiking enthusiasts and Lord of the Rings fans alike.

Not surprisingly, its owner, Edgar Gulanyan is a fan of hobbits.

Hobbits are fictional characters created by English writer John Tolkien. They are best known for their love of comfort and good food. And they prefer living in small but snug underground houses built into the side of the hills.

The hotel, which opened in 2019, has six houses built into the side of the Caucasus mountains and can accommodate up to 16 guests.

Despite its theme, the rooms are not hobbit-size.

The ceiling is 2.5 metres high so guests will not need to stoop like Gandalf – one of the main characters in "The Lord of the Rings."

With prices ranging from 25,000 to 40,000 Armenian drams (52-83 USD) per night, "Cozy House" is well above the local average price.

But this has not prevented people from coming. Off-season guests are around and all houses are already booked for the entire summer.

For these guests, a line from Tolkien’s famous poem rings true: "home is behind, the world ahead."

Armenian Constitutional Court head Hrayr Tovmasyan's attorney Amram Makinyan said they will still think about bringing the public TV company to legal liability.

A crime is already happening, the attorney told Armenian News – NEWS.am. "The head of the executive branch is already making an obvious attempt to usurp power," he said adding that there are signs of a crime.

According to media reports, coverage on Հ 1 was directed by Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan, Makinyan added. The attorney noted these issues are more serious than it seems at first glance.

The attorneys of Hrayr Tovmasyan made a statement around midnight, in which they accused the two leading TV channels of distributing investigation materials and flagrantly violating the presumption of innocence.

Newspaper: Armenia MPs’ hold heated closed meeting with Europeans Newspaper: Armenia MPs’ hold heated closed meeting with Europeans

YEREVAN. – Zhoghovurd daily of Armenia writes: According to Zhoghovurd daily, yesterday the closed meeting of the members of the State and Legal and Protection of Human Rights [Standing] Committees of the National Assembly with the representatives of the Council of Europe was quite heated. The "Bright Armenia" faction boycotted the discussion.

According to Zhoghovurd daily, experts who have arrived from the Council of Europe have said that the stereotypes of the public regarding giving privileges – marriage, adopting children, etc. – to the LGBT community are not envisaged by the [Istanbul] Convention.

Naira Zohrabyan asked whether the RA Criminal Code and the Law on Prevention of Domestic Violence do not solve the problems of violence; what is the absence of the law that obliges the adoption of the Istanbul Convention.

According to Zhoghovurd daily, Europeans have, in essence, not answered these questions.

Maria Karapetyan, present at the meeting from "My Step," who is a proponent of the adoption of the Istanbul Convention, has sat in silence. (…) while Ruben Rubinyan, who chaired the meeting, summed up: "Armenia is a sovereign state, and we will make our decision."

Asbarez: Reconnecting with Western Armenia through Genealogy

Descendants of Kharpert at an Armenian Genealogy conference in Detroit, 2017

PICO RIVERA, Calif.,—As an ancient nation with a continuous existence of thousands of years, Armenians have deep-rooted customs and traditions. Every region of the Armenian homeland has had its own unique set of cuisines, beliefs, costumes, dialects, songs, dances, as well as behavioral and physical characteristics. During the Armenian Genocide, massacres and displacement destroyed not only human lives, but also much of the rich variety that formed aggregate Armenian culture.

When Armenians meet each other for the first time, one of the first questions is usually “Oordeghen es? Sassountzee? Mshetzee? Gharabaghtzee? Vanetzee?” – single words of belonging used to identify origin-places on a map, yet also snippets encapsulating individual parts of an entire nation’s collective cultural identity.

As a result, of the Hamidian massacres and genocide, large Armenian communities formed in the United States in cities such as Boston, Chicago, and Detroit. Often, until World War II, such communities were composed of by people originating from the same village or town in the Western Armenian homeland. With the exception of Fresno, this phenomenon seems to be limited to the east coast. The west coast community, namely the Los Angeles area, is much more blended and homogenized.

Many find rediscovering some of the distinctive regional, sub-cultural features a joyous experience.

Unique beliefs and superstitions developed in Sassoun about the significance of certain animals. A dog’s mournful gaze or monotone whining meant that a house would soon be stricken by tragedy or death. Sassountzees believed that the spirit which strangled infants was kept at bay by dogs. Consequently, if newborns died in infancy, parents would name the next child after a dog.

Meanwhile, cats were considered to be Christ’s tasdmalns (“purifiers”). Therefore, killing a cat was considered a major sin, which could only be absolved if the sinner slaughtered an animal outside of a church. People feared following cats at night, believing they led people to their graves, where they would transform into skeletons and strangle their unsuspecting victims. A cat walking out of the house and eating grass outside foretold a drought and bad harvest.

In Ourfa, the game of Top Degenegi was played centuries before the origins of baseball. A thick bat and a ball were needed, the latter usually made using bits of rag tied together with colorful string. Two teams formed and stood at a distance from each other. As in baseball, one team pitched, the other batted. A batter had to hit the ball back in the direction of the pitching team, which tried to catch the ball before it hit the ground.

A grandmother from Yozgat might have mentioned the festivals and ceremonies given great importance, celebrated with great splendor, and having unique characteristics that differed by specific location. Agamor (New Year / Gaghant) was a pre-Christian festival, and a superstition-turned-tradition. It held that the rest of the year would continue based on how this particular day started off. For this reason, Yozgatsis tried to spend the day in joy and abundance.

They made numerous pastries in the shape of tools used to carry out the work of the village economy, among them the khop (ploughshare) and madj (plough handle). Made with unleavened flour, dough without salt and oil was made into round or crescent-shaped, bread-like cakes. The woman making these pastries would secretly place, without fail, a coin in one of them. On New Year’s Day, the person finding the coin was considered lucky. Yozgattzees called these pastries bak-has (fasting bread) instead of oodik-has (bread eaten on ordinary days).

Uefa probes Turkish footballers’ military salute in Euro 2020 qualifier

Europe's football governing body Uefa says it will investigate a military salute given by Turkish footballers after Everton star Cenk Tosun scored a goal against Albania, BBC News reports.

Turkey's 1-0 win in Istanbul came on Friday, amid Turkish army clashes with Kurdish fighters in northern Syria.

Tosun posted the salute photo on Instagram, with the message: "For our nation, especially for the ones who are risking their lives for our nation."

Uefa does not allow political gestures.

The win keeps Turkey at the top of its group in the Euro 2020 qualifying matches.

On Wednesday Turkey launched a major offensive in areas controlled by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Dozens of civilians and fighters have been killed on both sides.

On Instagram, the Turkish Football Federation also posted an image of the Turkey players and trainers saluting in the dressing room, along with the message:

"At the end of the road lies the championship! After seven matches we continue our leadership in the Euro 2020 Qualifying Group H. We give this win to all our hero soldiers."

Uefa spokesman Philip Townsend told Italian news agency Ansa the Turkish salute "could seem like a provocation".

"I can guarantee that we will examine this situation, let me check," he said.

Uefa's disciplinary rules prohibit "the use of gestures, words, objects or any other means to transmit a provocative message that is not fit for a sports event, particularly provocative messages that are of a political, ideological, religious or offensive nature".
