Official Stepanakert is labeling the Azerbaijani actions to be terrorist.

Artsakh Presidential spokesman Davit Babayan commented on the recent death of a soldier caused by Azerbaijani gunfire in an interview with ARMENPRESS.

“We are dealing with a terrorist state in the person of Azerbaijan. We are dealing with a low adversary. The violation of ceasefire during New Year days, which doesn’t whatsoever impact the military political balance, doesn’t change the situation in Azerbaijan’s favor. This is simply low, terrorism, inhumane conduct. This is the abnormal adversary we are dealing with”, he said.

Davit Babayan reminded that the official Stepanakert, had proposed 10 years ago to refrain from ceasefire violations especially during international, national, religious holidays as means of stability and peace.

“Taking such a step during holidays is a low [thing to do], it doesn’t fit into any reasoning. This is an irreversible loss for us, the memory of the fallen soldier will always stay bright in the hearts of all”, Babayan said.

On January 7, an Artsakhi soldier was shot dead by Azerbaijan.

The Board of Trustees of the Development Foundation of Armenia (DFA), led by Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan, summed up and selected the best three projects of “Rinnovate” competition announced for tourism development. The DFA organized the award ceremony and awarded the groups representing the three best projects, the foundation’s press service reported.

The first prize, the equivalent of the $15000 has been received by the group of “The Eco-Houses in Armenia” project, which aims to develop a touristic path from Khustup to Sanahin and Haghpat monasteries linking Armenia’s historic and scenic sites.

The second prize totaling to $10000 has been awarded to the group of “SevAp Resort” project, which have authored the concept of hotel construction and exploitation at 7 km distance from Shorzha village.

The third prize worth $5000 has been handed over to the group of “Yerevan Lake Smart Park” project, which aims to create a wide choice of entertainment for tourists and locals.

Prior to the awarding ceremony, the jury consisting of the representatives of international and state institutions chose the best five projects, first considering 60 ideas from Armenia and the Diaspora of the first stage, and at the next stages, discussing the 20 best business projects.

“Regardless of the results of the last round, after the end of the competition, the DFA will assist all five teams reaching the 3rd round to develop and pack their projects as well as find investors for the realization of the projects,” noted the DFA CEO Armen Avak Avakian.

The project co-coordinator team thanks the Programs Evaluating Committee consisting of representatives from the EU Delegation, the United Nations Development program (UNDP), Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU), State Committee for Tourism and the DFA for the cooperation in the previous three stages.

Pro-Erdogan assailants plead guilty

Assailants Sinan Narin of Virginia and Eyup Yildirim of New Jersey, who are being represented by Mark Schamel and David Benowitz, pled guilty to a count of assault with significant bodily injury, after participating in the beating of a group of Kurdish, Armenian, and Yezidi protesters outside of the home of the Turkish Ambassador on May 16th of this year. Narin and Yildirim were only two of the 19 individuals initially indicted to actually face justice in the United States.

At the official plea hearing, the prosecution lead by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sonali Patel read out loud the facts that the defendants agreed to, including multiple aggressions towards police officers, several statements supporting President Tayyip Erdogan, and finally, the assaults on Lusik Usoyan, Founder of the Ezidi Relief Fund and Murat Yasa, a local businessman and protest organizer. Although the defendants faced an indictment for hate crimes charges and more than 15 years in jail, almost all the charges were dropped in the plea agreement, which called for only a 1 year and 1 day sentence and a $12,500 fine. Judge Marisa Demeo will be able to increase or decrease that sentence at the official sentencing hearing, which is scheduled for March 15.

The lawyers for the defense indicated their intention to argue at the sentencing hearing that the protesters’ alleged support of the PKK and the content of their speech should somehow mitigate the brutal assault, which involved kicking prone victims on the ground in the head, one of whom was rendered unconscious.

They also denied any coordination with Turkish security staff during or after the attack, although both defendants have received political support from Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan, who many believe ordered the attack, and were personally visited in prison by Turkey’s Foreign Minister, who very publicly extended “love and greetings” from Turkey even after videotape images were broadcast of the defendants brutally beating Americans in DC.

The sentencing hearing is scheduled for 9:30am on March 15th, where the court will finally hear from the victim’s of the attack themselves.

“This plea agreement is indeed a travesty and we hope the judge will issue a harsher sentence, considering the brutality of the attack on both American bodies and fundamental principles by defendants, who have so far shown no remorse, but have signaled preparations to smear the victims instead,” said Kate Nahapetian, Executive Director of the Armenian Legal Center for Justice and Accountability.

Man Utd news: Henrikh Mkhitaryan clashed with Jose Mourinho

Manchester United star Mkhitaryan has fallen out of favour with Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.

The Armenia international has been omitted from seven of the last eight matchday squads amid fears over his ability.

Express Sport understands Mourinho is keen to replace the 28-year-old with Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil, who previously played under Mourinho while at Real Madrid.

And ESPN claim Mkhitaryan became embroiled in a spat with Mourinho at the club’s training ground.

It is said he took issue with Mourinho’s disappointment at him following a substitute cameo against Brighton.

Speaking after the 1-0 win, Mourinho said: “That was enough [to drop him] because the others worked to have a chance.

“Everybody works to have a chance. It’s as simple as that.”

ESPN say Mkhitaryan squared up to Mourinho in the corridors of the club’s Carrington training ground.

Yet Mourinho has remained tight-lipped about the confrontation when quizzed on the player’s future.

Meanwhile, speaking earlier this week, Mourinho explained why Mkhitaryan has been dropped in recent weeks.

"I can only have six [outfield] players on the bench and I try to have some balance on the bench — I had two defenders and [Daley] Blind who can play in different areas,” he said.

“I had Ashley Young to cover me all of the wing and the wing-back position.

"I had [Ander] Herrera as a midfield player, Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] as a striker and Marcus [Rashford] as a second striker and winger.

“I played [Anthony] Martial, [Juan] Mata and [Jesse] Lingard in the team.

“To have Micki means that I don't have one of them and, in this moment, I believe the other ones they deserve [the chance to play]."

Garo Paylan calls Turkey’s 2018 budget unfair and unconscionable

Ethnic Armenian lawmaker of the Turkish Parliament Garo Paylan delivered remarks during the discussion of Turkey’s budget, calling it the most unconscionable and unfair budget,  reports the official site of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP).

“The budget of any state is the conscience of that country. Our budget is the most unconscionable and unfair in terms of revenues and expenditures. The 2018 budget makes allocations to the war, rather than to the social policy. Now we face the most unfair budget of the era of the Justice and Development Party”, he said.

He highlighted the fact that the budget of the power structures increased by 40-50%, whereas the budget of ministries of education, family increased just by 8-9%. “It turns out that under the new budget there will be fewer hospitals, schools and more weapons”, he said.

Garo Paylan stated that the parliament’s main responsibility is to prevent the transformation of the country into a gang. “This should be done by democratic policy, rule of law, freedom of speech, rather than by purchasing S-400 missile systems”, Garo Paylan said.

All-ASA Condemns Appointment of Samantha Power to Aurora Prize Selection Committee

The All ASA

GLENDALE—The All-Armenian Student Association is appalled and dismayed at the appointment of Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, to the Selection Committee for the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity. As a notable scholar with expertise in human rights, Power continuously failed to use her high-level position in the Obama administration to hold President Obama to his campaign promise regarding the recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

Samantha Power began her career as a war correspondent in Bosnia during the civil war, where she became critical of the Clinton administration’s near-paralysis in the face of ethnic cleansing of the Bosnian population. Her observations were summarily collected in her Pulitzer-Prize winning book, “A Problem from Hell: America in the Age of Genocide,” in which she firmly concludes that despite the outcry of “never again” following the Holocaust, the international community, particularly the United States, remains idle and ineffective in putting an end to mass atrocities.

Nevertheless, her ardent advocacy for human rights became stymied upon her appointment as the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Power joined Obama’s campaign in 2008. A week before the presidential election, she released a video directed specifically to the Armenian-American community, urging them to vote for Obama because of his firm promise to recognize the Armenian Genocide once he is elected. During his eight years in office, President Obama dishonored his campaign pledge and Samantha Power – a person who knew all too well the gravity of this decision for the international community – did nothing to reverse his course.

In April 2017, Power took to social media to express regret for her failure to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide during her time on Obama’s cabinet. “I am very sorry, that, during our time in office, we in the Obama Administration did not recognize the Armenian Genocide,” Power said on Twitter. During her tenure, Power clearly prioritized political expediency over properly advocating for the issues she believes in. An _expression_ of regret, stated at a time when she has seemingly less power, is nothing but a missed opportunity. It is a disappointment not only for the Armenian community, but for the international community as a whole.

Further, it is even more disappointing that the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity, which was “founded on behalf of the survivors of the Armenian Genocide and in gratitude to their saviors,” would reward Samantha Power with a seat on their Selection Committee. The Aurora Humanitarian Initiative is designed to raise public awareness and address some of the world’s most pressing humanitarian issues. At the forefront of these issues should be the need to hold public officials accountable for the decisions they make in protecting vulnerable communities.

The founders of the Initiative – Noubar Afeyan, Vartan Gregorian, and Ruben Vardanyan – have made a misguided decision in appointing Samantha Power to the Selection Committee. They have selectively praised her unparalleled expertise on human rights, while not recognizing that expertise alone does not justify her silence and inaction. We cannot merely praise her influential work in the past, while ignoring the fact that she fell extremely short at a time and stage that mattered the most. The All-ASA condemns the appointment of Samantha Power to the Selection Committee of the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity. We urge the Founders of the Aurora Prize, Noubar Afeyan, Vartan Gregorian, and Ruben Vardanyan, to reverse this decision.

The All-Armenian Student Association (All-ASA) works to unite various Armenian-American college student organizations and serve the greater Armenian-American community through cultural, social, educational, and activist programming. As the largest confederation of Armenian student organizations in the nation, All-ASA is dedicated to collaboration among its constituent organizations, leadership development of its members, and community service.

Artsakh Praises Iran, Wants ‘Functioning Borders’

Artsakh Foreign Minister Masis Mayilian

STEPANAKERT—In an interview with the Iranian “Shargh” daily newspaper, Artsakh Foreign Minister Masis Mayilian praised Iran’s balanced position on the Karabakh conflict and expressed hope that one day the common border shared by Iran and Artsakh can be opened.

“The fact that Iran acted as a mediator in this conflict in the first half of 1992 is a testament to the fact that the country is interested in maintaining peace in the region. This is further supported by Tehran’s willingness to again take up a mediating role in the settlement process,” said Mayilian.

He voiced regret that the border between Artsakh and Iran remains closed and pledged his country’s willingness to have open borders and good-neighborly relations with all countries in the region. “I think will be in the best interests of all stakeholders in the region,” he said.

Speaking of his experience as Foreign Minister of an unrecognized country, Mayilian said the country, which proclaimed independence in 1991, has all the features of state, primarily aimed at creating conditions conducive to secure development.

He added that while there is not international recognition of Artsakh, the republic is “an important military-political factor in the region,” saying the efforts to attain that recognition were already underway.

Asked about the possibility of “giving away certain territories” in case of signing a deal with Baku, Mayilian said, “Our current state borders do not exceed those of historic Artsakh. Furthermore, some territories of the Artsakh Republic, including the Shahumyan region, parts of Martakert and Martuni, which form 15 percent of the republic, are still under Azerbaijani occupation.”

“The areas under Artsakh jurisdiction are secured by the Artsakh Republic Constitution adopted by a popular referendum, which expresses the will of our people,” he added.

Speaking about the negotiations under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group, the Foreign Minister said “today there is no negotiation process in its classical sense. Since 1997 the mediators have been using shuttle diplomacy to work with parties to ensure consensus on certain issues, which will form the basis for continuing the talks.”

Minister Mayilian said the war unleashed by Azerbaijan in 2016 was a blow to the peace process, which further postponed the prospects of reaching a final solution to the conflict.

“The main objective today is to reinforce peace and stability in the region, and this is what the mediating efforts are targeted at,” he said.

The Foreign Minister said Artsakh is interested in the soonest settlement of the issue” and believes that it will allow to ensure stability and prosperity for all peoples in the region.

MUTV‘s new feature documentary ‘Micki: An Armenian Hero’ premieres on Thursday night, providing a detailed analysis of Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s story, according to Manchester United’s official webpage.

“I could never imagine that, playing at Manchester United, I would have our flag on the top [of Old Trafford],” says Mkhitaryan, surveying his surroundings as he sits in the Sir Bobby Charlton stand. “I think every Armenian child would like to be here.”

Filmed in Yerevan and Manchester over recent months, the documentary exposes the depth of Henrikh’s influence on his homeland, while also shedding light on his compelling background.

“He is the hero of this country, of this society,” explains Armenian journalist Ara Tadevosyan. “Everyone is proud of him. Even people who don’t normally watch football every day, even they started to watch the Premier League and follow Manchester United. He is a very important man for this country, not as a footballer but as a guy who symbolizes the Armenian dream.”
