Former Rebels coach Tarkanian to undergo spinal-cord surgery

Former Rebels coach Tarkanian to undergo spinal-cord surgery

LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL (Las Vegas, Nevada)
July 16, 2009

Former UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian is expected to undergo
spinal-cord surgery Friday morning.

His son Danny Tarkanian said the operation is needed because
Tarkanian, 79, has a bone spur compressing his spinal cord and
inhibiting his ability to walk.

The operation, originally scheduled for Tuesday at Scripps Memorial
Hospital near San Diego, was postponed because Tarkanian’s blood was
too thin.

"He’s all right. He’s not in discomfort. He’s just on a lot of
medication and a little disoriented," Danny Tarkanian said. "They say
it’s a pretty standard procedure, so hopefully there won’t be a lot of
danger involved."

PROSPEROUS ARMENIA HAS LONG PROVED TO BE AN INDEPENDENT POLITICAL FORCE

"The Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) is not aware of either the old or
the new principles of settlement of the Karabakh conflict, and cannot
express an opinion," Gagik Tsarukyan’s Spokesman Khachk Galstyan told
a press conference today.

"The Foreign Minister has presented there principles, which are
acceptable to us. His resignation is out of the question. These
principles satisfy us at the moment," Khachik Galstyan said.

The Prosperous Armenia Party stands for establishment of relations
with Turkey, if there are no preconditions, the spokesman noted.

Will the Party cooperate with Robert Kocharyan in case he returns to
politics or will remain in the coalition? In response to the question,
Khachik Galstyan stated that the Prosperous Armenia was an independent
political force.

"PAP has long proved to be an independent political force, and has no
ties with ex-President Robert Kocharyan. It’s up to Robert Kocharyan
if he decides to return to active politics. The Prosperous Armenia
has long assumed an independent political path under the leadership
of Gagik Tsarukyan," he said.

Eskandarian adds twist to Super Clasico

Eskandarian adds twist to Super Clasico

The Press-Enterprise (Riverside, CA)
Friday, July 10, 2009

By LUIS BUENO, Special to The Press-Enterprise

CARSON – Since the team’s inception in 2004, Chivas USA has turned to
former Galaxy players to fill its roster. Chivas’ first-ever member
was a former Galaxy player, as were four other prominent first-year
faces.

Whether or not the proximity of the clubs plays a factor — the teams
share Home Depot Center, with the Galaxy’s locker room entrance some
15 yards from Chivas’ — there has been a steady flow of players from
the Galaxy to Chivas. Former Galaxy players Paulo Nagamura, Sasha
Victorine and Shavar Thomas all have helped Chivas rise to second in
the Western Conference this season.

However, despite its struggles of the past few seasons coinciding with
Chivas’ newfound success, the Galaxy hadn’t looked much to its
neighbor for talent until acquiring Alecko Eskandarian from Chivas on
July 1. The 27-year-old forward promptly scored a goal in his debut
three days later in a 1-0 win over New England.

Entering its 16th regular-season matchup with Chivas, the Galaxy may
count on Eskandarian for some firepower. As the first ex-Chivas player
who has made an impact on the Galaxy, he could usher in a new era in
the fifth year of the so-called Super Clasico.

Eskandarian, the MVP of the 2004 MLS Cup, joined Chivas for the start
of last season and scored in his home debut. But the year was marred
by a groin injury as Eskandarian spent more time in the trainer’s
office than on the field.

This season was supposed to be somewhat of a fresh start for "Esky,"
as he entered the year healthy and primed to fight for a starting
spot.

But things did not go that way. Even fit and injury free, Eskandarian
was at best the club’s fourth option at forward, and some weeks he
slipped completely off the depth chart and did not dress at all.

"I worked really hard … and I felt good coming into this year. For
whatever reason I didn’t get the playing time I wanted to," he
said. "No reason was ever given to me."

Eskandarian played down any negative feelings and spoke highly of his
former club. But Landon Donovan said his new teammate is amped up for
the game.

"It’s a little fresh because it happened so recently, but I’d much
rather have someone overexcited than underexcited," Donovan said. "The
way he’s moving around, he’s ready for this game."

ANC (Congress Letter to International Community

PRESS RELEASE

On July 1st, a group of young activists distributing informational fliers
for the demonstration planned for July 2nd was attacked by a group of people
in plain clothes. In addition to kicking and punching, the attackers used
their pistols to beat the activists, three of whom had to be taken to a
hospital due to their poor condition. Over the next day, the suspicion that
the attackers were actually policemen was publicly confirmed.

On July 5th, Armenia’s Constitution Day, police arrested one of those three
beaten activists, 28 year old Tigran Arakelyan. Three days later, the courts
sentenced Tigran to two months imprisonment for "Hooliganism." Tigran began
a hunger strike on July 6th and was joined the next day by Karen Karapetyan,
chairperson of the ANM youth wing. They were joined by four more members of
the Youth Movement on July 8th: Arakel Semirjyan, Narek Aivazyan, Sargis
Gevorgyan and Sargis Khachatryan. On 10th of July Tigran stopped
hunger-strike and asked others to behave the same way.

Sadly, the aggression the current regime first demonstrated over a year ago
continues and has focused further against those who try to inform and to
affect change, the journalists and the youth. The attack on July 1st was the
second of such violent attacks in little more than 2 months.

Due in part to the recent partial amnesty by the regime, PACE has given the
government of Armenia yet another reprieve. This is, in spite of the
dissolution of the fact-finding commission, the continued existence of
political prisoners in Armenia and repressions against media, and continued
violence against those who have a voice. There are four youths on hunger
strike in Armenia now, in protest of the illegal detention of a young man
whose guilt lays in daring to raise his voice against an illegal and
oppressive regime.

The arrest and conviction of Tigran Arakelyan is only one more step in a
consistently escalating battle the regime is waging against the people of
Armenia. Support given to the authorities is support given to an oppressive
government which acquired power through violent and anti-democratic means,
and continues to use these same means to stay in power today.

It is obvious that the current regime has not changed, and has no intention
to change, its distaste for human rights and civil society, and the
treatment of its own people.

We ask that you remain vigilant in your monitoring of this situation.

Sincerely,

Youth Council

2009 AGBU Garbis Papazian Award Presented to Tsvetana Paskaleva

In an awards ceremony at the Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall in Yerevan
on July 3, the AGBU Garbis Papazian Award was presented to Bulgarian
reporter, documentarian and cinematographer Tsvetana Paskaleva for her
unwavering devotion to the truthful presentation of the Karabakh
liberation struggle.

Established in 1988, the AGBU Garbis Papazian Award is annually bestowed
on non-Armenian scholars and intellectuals, who, through their scholarly
research and publications, contribute to the dissemination and
understanding of Armenian history and culture, as well as the Armenian
Question.

Past recipients of this prestigious award have included Polish public
figure Msgr. Stanislaw Pindera, Spanish intellectual Gonzalo H. Guarch,
German scholar Wolfgang Gust, UCLA Professor Peter Crowe, Baroness Cox
of the British House of Lords, Russian intellectual Kim Bakshi and
Austrian archivists Helmut & Heide Buschhausen.

Paskaleva worked in Karabakh during that enclave’s war of independence
from Azerbaijan, presenting the battles and politics of the conflict to
an international audience. As a foreign journalist, she reported on the
mass deportations and atrocities against the Armenian citizens of
Azerbaijan. She is the director of seven documentaries about the
Karabakh war. She has also prepared reports for CNN, NBC, Antene-2 and
other European media agencies.

The July 3 ceremony began with a screening of Paskaleva’s 1993
documentary, "My Dears, Living and Dead," and continued with a speech by
Ruben Gevorkiants, chairman of the Republic of Armenia’s Union of
Cinematographers, who spoke about Paskaleva’s war coverage. Razmik
Hartunian-Tamrazian, member of the AGBU Garbis Papazian Award committee,
and Levon Kebabdjian, honorary member of the AGBU Central Board of
Directors, presented Pashkaleva with the award money and certificate.

AGBU Central Board of Directors member Yervant Zorian spoke about the
wide range of cultural and educational activities of AGBU and read AGBU
President Berge Setrakian’s congratulatory message. Zorian also
presented Paskaleva with the special AGBU crystal award for her
outstanding achievement.

After accepting the awards, Paskaleva expressed her gratitude to AGBU
and the Garbis Papazian Award committee for their gift. She spoke
passionately about the Karabakh liberation struggle and her urge to tell
the world about the atrocities in Karabakh, "I witnessed human truth
during the war…which needed to be revealed and protected. It was my
duty to come and shoot the severe reality of the people of Karabakh."

The award ceremony was followed by a performance of Avet Terterian’s
Symphony No. 3 by the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra under its artistic
director and principal conductor Eduard Topchjan.

The AGBU Garbis Papazian Award was established in 1988 through the
initiative and with the financial resources of Garbis Papazian, for the
purpose of recognizing non-Armenian intellectuals who contribute to an
increase in awareness of Armenian history, culture and the Armenian
Question.

Established in 1906, the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) is the
world’s largest non-profit Armenian organization. Headquartered in New
York City, AGBU () preserves and promotes the Armenian
identity and heritage through educational, cultural and humanitarian
programs, annually serving some 400,000 Armenians in 35 countries.
