President Ilham Aliev’s Guilty Look

PRESIDENT ILHAM ALIEV’S GUILTY LOOK

I was one of the journalists invited to cover the Munich talks on
November 22. Armenia’s President Serge Sargsyan seemed to be a little
late while OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs and Azerbaijan’s President
Ilham Aliev were standing in the hall, just close to the meeting-room.

President Aliev was standing pensive and silent. It was something I
do know very well – just in a sudden I realized; it was a one of my
9-year-old son’s face when he is going to do something contrary to
the canons of our family rules. That was a real face and look of a
guilty student.

I thought it was unusual, but at the same time, actually, it looks like
he knows that international community has its own rules. And something
suitable to Baku ‘life-style’ will be sort ill with international
lay-out. Well, that certainly didn’t take long to wait, besides…

I am a journalist, not expert on negotiations or a metoposcopist. But
President Ilham Aliev’s guilty look certainly meant the negotiations
would be again of no effect as he himself questions whether he took
a right step.

ANKARA: Unique Collection Puts Turkish History On The Agenda

UNIQUE COLLECTION PUTS TURKISH HISTORY ON THE AGENDA

Gönel and Muhsinzade explain that they managed to find all the
diaries on display by contacting known collectors and visiting
second-hand bookshops.

A collection of Turkish diaries from over the last 100 years is
currently on display at the original location of the Ece Ajandaları
company in Asmalı Meydan, a site that has witnessed many of the most
important changes in the Turkish diary and printing industry. The
collection offers a unique glimpse into many important moments from
Turkey’s history.

Founded at Asmalı Meydan in 1909 by Mehmet Sadık Efendi, Ece
Ajandaları’s agendas have been used by a wide range of people,
including some of the country’s most important historical figures,
many of whose diaries are featured in the current show.

At the time, there were Greek-Ottoman Turkish and Armenian-Ottoman
Turkish diaries, but no completely Ottoman Turkish ones, says
Seydali Gönel, an administrator at Ece Ajandaları, in an interview
with Today’s Zaman. As the first Turkish and Muslim diary company,
coupled with the fact that its diaries were published in both the
Ottoman-Arabic alphabet and the Turkish-Latin alphabet, Ece Ajandaları
stood apart from other diaries and caught the attention of collectors,
he emphasizes. Their diaries were used by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk,
İsmet İnönu, Adnan Menderes and many other pivotal politicians
from Turkey’s history, in addition to many prominent Turkish artists.

Prepared by the third generation of the family that founded the
company, the show features 40 diaries from various periods, mainly
focusing on the early years of Ece Ajandaları’s history: the
1910s, 1920s and 1930s. Former Turkish Prime Minister Nihat Erim,
deputy Mithat Aydın, Muhiddin Arif Mardin Bey and Rubabe Ar used
Ece Ajandaları at the time, and their diaries are currently being
displayed in the show. The exhibition also includes two diaries
belonging to Nihat Erim, written in his own handwriting.

"Unfortunately we could not locate the oldest diary, published in
1910. The oldest one in the show is a black one from 1917, published in
Ottoman Turkish, and the newest is our latest design that we started
to produce this year, named ‘Avrasya,’ which brings together all our
classic qualities," says Ali Muhsinzade, an administrator at Ece
Ajandaları. Asked how they managed to find all of these diaries,
Gönel and Ali Muhsinzade explain that they contacted the known
collectors and visited many second-hand bookshops, where they found
many Ece diaries.

"Each page of these diaries tells the story of a different world. We
really hope that one day we can found a publishing house as well
and publish books based on the emotions and thoughts written on the
pages of Ece diaries," Gönen says, adding that while preparing the
show they wanted it to reflect their century-old vision. "We intended
it to reflect our humble, elegant, simple and traditional quality —
our authenticity. For this reason we did not choose a regular form of
exhibition hall. We wanted to celebrate the birthday of Ece Ajandaları
in the place where it was born 100 years ago," explains Muhsinzade.

Ece Ajandaları is now producing special collections for students,
people in the business world and even tourists visiting Ä°stanbul. The
show, titled "Gun Uzar 100 Yıl Olur" (A Day Becomes a Century),
will run until Dec. 12 at Asmalı Meydan.

RA Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan Is In Italy To Attend A FAO Summit

RA PRIME MINISTER TIGRAN SARGSYAN IS IN ITALY TO ATTEND A FAO SUMMIT. EARLIER TODAY TIGRAN SARGSYAN DELIVERED A STATEMENT

Tu esday, 17 November 2009

RA Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan is in Italy to attend a FAO summit.

Earlier today Tigran Sargsyan delivered a statement, which reads in
part: "Mr. Chairman, Dear Colleagues, Ladies and Gentlemen. Full member
of the FAO since 1993, the Republic of Armenia has been involved in
the activities of the Organization for about twenty years now. The past
years of cooperation were those of effective work leading to numerous
achievements. We are stating with pride that our country’s example was
cited among four other success stories in the FAO’s "Ways of Success"
report as a good experience of setting tasks and addressing them
with perseverance. Indeed, this does not mean that all the problems
are solved, so we should work with renewed effort to build on these
achievements and continue with progress in the sphere of agriculture."

It is common knowledge that food production is at high risk all over
the world including Armenia. The current financial and economic crisis
adds its negative impact on the issue of food demand especially in
developing countries. This is why we appreciate the holding of this
summit, as well as the efforts made by the States and international
organizations. Those present will still have the opportunity of
referring to the Declaration of this summit on food security. I feel
that we are going to have quite interesting and substantial debates.

My position is strict and clear-cut enough. The Republic of Armenia
endorses the Summit Declaration. It meets our government’s vision
and the underlying principles are acceptable to us.

Dear Director General,

We highly appreciate the decision to hold the 36th Session of FAO’s
European Commission on Agriculture and the 27th European Regional
Conference of FAO in Yerevan from May 10-14, 2010. I hope that the
decisions adopted in Yerevan will contribute to the considerable
improvement of the level of food security. We are looking forward to
seeing you again in Yerevan.

Allow me, on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Armenia, to
extend my deepest gratitude to the Food and Agriculture Organization
and personally to Director-General Dr. Jacques Diouf, to all donor
community members and all countries with good will, for their
collaborative efforts to find solutions to the world’s rising
problems. I am confident that with collaborative efforts of all
countries we will be able to meet all challenges of food insecurity
and gradually eradicate hunger and poverty in the world."

After the proceedings of the forum, the Prime Minister of Armenia had
an interview with Food and Agriculture Organization Director-General
Dr. Jacques Diouf to discuss a bilateral cooperation-related agenda.

Tigran Sargsyan expressed Armenia’s appreciation of the ongoing RA-FAO
collaboration and the programs implemented in our country. The head
of government reiterated Armenia’s readiness to host the 36th Session
of FAO’s European Commission on Agriculture and the 27th European
Regional Conference of FAO in Yerevan from May 10-14, 2010.

The Prime Minister underscored the need for making joint efforts toward
grain, corn, potato seed breeding, pisciculture, cattle stock recording
and registration, as well as introducing a system of agricultural
insurance in Armenia.

The FAO Director-General said the new cooperation priorities may
result in a more efficacious collaboration between the Republic of
Armenia and his organization.

During the day, the head of government is also scheduled to meet with
President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development
(IFAD) Kanayo Nwanze and UN World Food Programme (WFP) Executive
Director Josette Sheeran.

Armenian Community Of Estonia Plans To Activize Armenian-Estonian Cu

ARMENIAN COMMUNITY OF ESTONIA PLANS TO ACTIVIZE ARMENIAN-ESTONIAN CULTURAL CONTACTS

NOYAN TAPAN
NOVEMBER 18, 2009
YEREVAN

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 18, NOYAN TAPAN – ARMENIANS TODAY. The Armenian
community of Estonia did much work in the past years to present
Armenian culture in that country and Estonian culture in Armenia.

Noyan Tapan correspondent was informed about it by Arsen Klian,
the Chairman of the International Union of Painters functioning in
Tallinn, the Founding Director of the Private Art School.

He said that Armenian culture and national cuisine are periodically
presented in Tallinn within the framework of the City’s Day annual
festival, Armenian painters present their works at exhibitions
organized by the International Union of Painters and other
exhibitions. However, according to A. Klian, the most important
achievement in promotion of Armenian culture is that Estonian Chamber
Choir presents Armenian sacred song in Armenian at concerts, as well
as has recorded a compact disk of Armenian church psalms.

According to A. Klian’s information, over 2 000 Armenians live in
Estonia, mostly in the cities of Tallinn and Tartu. An Armenian
Apostolic Church functions in the capital city, the mother tongue is
taught at the above mentioned Art School. More than 50 children take
part in art and Armenian language courses.

The cultural figure is convinced that Armenian community’s cooperation
with the RA Ministry of Diaspora will contribute to implementation of
programs aimed at preservation of Armenian identity and development
of Armenian-Estonian cultural contacts.

The painter said that on the basis of three kept portraits of great
Armenian enlightener Khachatur Abovian he and his mother, Anahit Klian
created a new portrait each. Anahit Klian gave her canvas to Tartu
(formerly Dorpat) University where the enlightener had studied and
Arsen Klian gave the portrait to Yerevan K. Abovian House-Museum. The
artist has painted portraits of Estonia’s, Finland’s political figures,
Russian and Armenian variety stars. In early November he organized
his first personal exhibition in the homeland, in addition to many
personal exhibitions organized in other countries. Painter’s second,
larger Yerevan exhibition will be held by late 2009 at Arno Babajanian
concert hall’s lobby.

KOCHARIAN AGAIN RESPONDS TO PREDECESSOR’S ATTACKS

t/856-kocharian-again-responds-to-predecessors-att acks.html
Tuesday, 17 November 2009 00:37

In a speech last Wednesday, Ter-Petrosian said that Kocharian’s
decade-long policies on Turkey and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict
proved disastrous and that President Serzh Sarkisian should not be
held primarily responsible for them. The opposition leader claimed in
particular that it was Kocharian who renounced Armenian territorial
claims to Turkey and paved the way for the establishment of a
Turkish-Armenian commission of historians.

"The accusations addressed to me are so absurd that there is no point
in dwelling on their content because of the complete absence thereof,"
Kocharian said in a rare statement sent to the Mediamax news agency.

"Apparently I somehow inspire Ter-Petrosian seeing as he remembers
me frequently," sneered Armenia’s second president. He compared
Ter-Petrosian to a scared man whom he said he encountered during a
recent, hitherto unpublicized, safari to Africa. He said the "European"
hunter had been "quite smashed" by a bear several years ago and now
flinches at every mention of the animal.

It was not clear if Kocharian alluded to the bloody suppression of
Ter-Petrosian’s massive anti-government demonstrations held in the
final weeks of his decade-long presidency early last year. Nor did
he specify his attitude towards the recently signed Turkish-Armenian
agreements, the main theme of Ter-Petrosian’s speech.
