Armenian Genocide

According to the Armenian-American Action Committee (ARAMAC) of the
Armenian Assembly of America, the C-SPAN-2 BookTV Show broadcast
a program dedicated to Michael Bobelian’s "Children of Armenia"
on December 19 and 20.

Michael Bobelian, journalist and grandson of an Armenian Genocide
survivor, in his book recalls the displacement of 2 million Armenians,
many of which were killed by the Ottoman government from 1915 to 1923.

The author questions why this historical period has been ignored. He
cites over 100 articles in the New York Times in 1915 recounting the
events as they unfolded, President Woodrow Wilson’s calls for aid,
and the current work of Armenian descendants to have the genocide
publicly acknowledged.

"Children of Armenia" was broadcast on C-SPAN-2 BookTV Show three
times: Saturday afternoon, Sunday morning and evening.

This event was hosted by Chaucer’s Bookstore in Santa Barbara,
California.

Gas supply in north Ingushetia restarted after pipe rupture

Gas supply in north Ingushetia restarted after pipe rupture

MALGOBEK, December 20 (RIA Novosti)

Gas supply in the north of Russia’s North Caucasus Republic of
Ingushetia has restarted after an accident at the trunk pipeline, the
republic’s emergencies ministry said on Sunday.

The accident occurred on Saturday evening when a gas pipeline running
from North Ossetia to Ingushetia broke down, leaving residents of the
Malgobek district without heating.

The emergencies ministry said gas supply restarted after a reserve
pipe was put into operation.

"The situation has been normalized by now, heating has been restored
and the damaged pipe is under repairs," the emergencies ministry said.

A week ago, gas supplies to Armenia and Russia’s North Caucasus
republics of North Ossetia and Ingushetia were suspended after a bomb
was found on the pipeline running from Mozdok in North Ossetia to
Georgia.

The gas supplies resumed on Tuesday after bomb technicians deactivated
two explosive devices planted on the pipeline.

Best Option Is To Link Opening Of Armenian-Turkish Border To Nagorno

BEST OPTION IS TO LINK OPENING OF ARMENIAN-TURKISH BORDER TO NAGORNO-KARABAKH CONFLICT SETTLEMENT: BRITISH EXPERT

Azerbaijan, Baku

The best option scenario now would be to link the opening of the
Turkey-Armenia with the final settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict, British Transatlantic Institute Director Ziba Norman said.

"But, the political realities dictate that it will not be that smoothly
achieved. There are too many players who are looking to derail the
process. Not least, those in power in the Nagorno-Karabakh itself,"
Norman wrote Trend News in an e-mail.

Turkish and Armenian foreign ministers Ahmet Davutoglu and Edward
Nalbandian signed the Ankara-Yerevan protocols in Zurich Oct. 10.Â
Diplomatic relations between Armenia and Turkey have been broken due
to Armenia’s claims of an alleged genocide, and its occupation of
Azerbaijani lands. The border between them has been broken since 1993.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The
co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the U.S. –
are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. General Assembly’s resolutions
on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh region and the occupied
territories.

According to Norman, the U.S is looking to enhance ties with Armenia,
for example, by drawing "Armenia into the NATO partnership action
plan. Opening the Turkey-Armenia border is a very important aspect
of this, so support for Serzh Sargsyan will be essential if this is
to be realized."

Regarding the U.S. Congress granting financial aid to the separatist
Nagorno-Karabakh, Norman noted that the U.S assistance to Armenia
has declined compared with previous years, despite Obama’s promises
to the Armenian lobby on the eve of taking office.

"This shows the Obama Administration have understood the real political
realities of the situation and will not blindly support one side,
the expert added.

The U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate approved a bill on
the general appropriations for the 2010 fiscal year, according to
which assistance to Nagorno-Karabakh will be allocated to the amount
of $8 million. Any restrictions on the implementation of programs in
Karabakh have been removed.

President Serzh Sargsyan’s foreign policy dissatisfies the Armenian
diaspora in the U.S. and this group is the group that lobbied for
the allocation of money and trying to derail the peace process.

"By making a concession to the Diaspora lobby, who have argued for
these funds to be unrestricted, the US may hope to ease conditions
for negotiations," Norman believes.

Azerbaijanis In U.S. Demand Freedom House To Correct Map Of Freedom

AZERBAIJANIS IN U.S. DEMAND FREEDOM HOUSE TO CORRECT MAP OF FREEDOM

Today.Az
14 December 2009 [13:39]

Azerbaijani Diaspora organizations have started a new internet campaign
against the Freedom House.

The reason for this is that the organization has declined of the
Armenia-occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan as both somehow
"Partly Free" and designated under some joint rule of Azerbaijan
and Armenia.

Azerbaijanis in America stated that Nagorno-Karabakh region has been
and is recognized as de jure part of Azerbaijan by four UN Security
Council resolutions, several UN GA resolutions, as well as the State
Department.

Hundreds of Azerbaijani Diaspora members are sending their protect
letters to a number of the U.S. officials, including Senator Kay
Bailey Hutchison, Senator John Cornyn, Representative Al Green.

They are also calling on Azerbaijani and Turkish societies to send
protect emails directly to Freedom House.

Azerbaijanis believes that the Freedom House sends a wrong signal to
the world and confuses readers and visitors.

"While it rightly indicates Abkhazia, Transdnistria and even Kosovo
as part of Georgia, Moldova and Serbia respectively, Nagorno-Karabakh
for some unknown reasons is indicated as Armenia/Azerbaijan.

"This gross mistake turns the "Map of Freedom" into a Map of Selective
Separatism, Annexation and Usurpation," the Azerbaijani diaspora
organizations said in a statement.

Authors of letters also pointing out that Freedom House is a U.S.

organization and gets government funding, hence should listen to what
the U.S. government says.

On the other hand, Azerbaijan continues to have de facto control of
some 15 percent of Nagorno-Karabakh (more than any other country with
similar problems of occupation).

The U.S. Azerbaijanis are strongly urging Freedom House to correct
the map and country report as soon as possible to bring it in-line
with UN SC resolutions and State Department’s policy.

Armenia Among Top Three Reliable Partners Of Russia: Russian Public

ARMENIA AMONG TOP THREE RELIABLE PARTNERS OF RUSSIA: RUSSIAN PUBLIC OPINION RESEARCH CENTER (VCIOM)

ArmInfo
2009-12-14 13:39:00

ArmInfo. Armenia has proved among the top three reliable partners of
Russia, says the poll conducted by the Russian Public Opinion Research
Center (VCIOM) on Nov 21-22 2009. A total of 1.6 thousand people were
polled in 140 populated areas in 42 regions, districts and republics
of the Russian Federation. Statistical discrepancy does not exceed
3.4%. Thus, 8% of the polled ranked Armenia the third partner of
Russia after Belarus (43%) and Kazakhstan (31%).

RBC reports that the other CIS member-states are ranked deep in the
bottom of the list: Azerbaijan and Ukraine were given by 4% of votes,
Kyrghyzstan, Moldavia, Turkmenia and Uzbekistan by 3%. Tajikistan
and Georgia were given by 2% and 1% of votes, respectively.

Nevertheless, the citizens of Russia do not trust in President of
Armenia Serzh Sargayan much. He received only 3% of the votes of the
polled and took the 7th position in the list of the CIS leaders.

President of Belarus A. Lukashenko and President of Kazakhstan N.

Nazarbayev received 33% and 28% respectively. Then goes Ilham Aliyev,
President of Azerbaijan (6%). The lowest was the rating of M.

Saakashvili, President of Georgia (1%).

Ethnic Armenian Appointed To Key Public Post

ETHNIC ARMENIAN APPOINTED TO KEY PUBLIC POST

First time in the Turkish republic history, an Armenian is appointed
to the key post. According to Turkish Hurriyet, citizen of Armenian
origin Leo Suren Alepli passed the final exam.

After overcoming all obstacles, Alepi was appointed as an expert
in a working group on Turkey’s membership to EU and included in the
delegation of 42 people.

NEWS.am recalls that earlier Minister for EU Affairs and Chief
Negotiator Egemen Bagis replied to one of the Turkish papers,
commenting on hiring Armenian for a key public post. Turkish
Hurriyet quotes Bagis as saying, "We will implement the project
with the efforts of young, old, rich and poor, Armenians, Jewish and
Muslims. A 340-member delegation should be formed, which is already
approved by Turkish parliament. We have conducted admission exams and
118 citizens already took a written test. While recruiting people,
we do not pay attention to their ethnic, religious or political
views. All our citizens are equal."

Hovhannisyan discards Azerbaijan’s war rhetoric as "not serious".

The leader of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation’s faction in
parliament, Vahan Hovhannisyan, discards as "not serious" the bellicose
rhetoric routinely heard from Azerbaijan’s military top brass.

The latest such statement (of several surfacing since September 1)
was made on Saturday by Azerbaijan’s defense minister Safar Abiyev,
who – ignoring OSCE persuasion against such rhetoric – again spoke
about the possibility of resolving the Karabakh conflict through
the use of force. "If negotiations produce no result, a war with
Armenia is inevitable," the Azeri minister said bluntly, as reported
by Azerbaijani media.

Armenia and Azerbaijan continue their internationally mediated talks
and are said to be close to agreement on basic principles of settling
the longstanding conflict.

Several international documents signed by Yerevan and Baku, in
particular the November 2008 Moscow declaration of the two countries’
presidents co-sponsored by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and the
latest statement on Karabakh by the Foreign Ministers of the OSCE
member states adopted in Athens on December 2, call on the parties to
the Karabakh conflict to abstain from the use of force or even threats
of the use of force in the process of settling the protracted dispute.

Commenting at ArmeniaNow’s request on the statement by the Azerbaijani
minister, Hovhannisiayn, who headed the Armenian parliament’s standing
committee on defense, national security and internal affairs in
1999-2003, said: "I can reply to Abiyev using the words of Spartan King
Leonidas (V century BC), who retorted to Persian King Xerxes’s demand
of surrender by saying: ‘Come and get it’." (The Greeks eventually
proved victorious).

At a press conference on Monday, Hovhannisyan also spoke about steps
that ARF Dashnaktsutyun is going to take to attempt preventing the
ratification of fence-mending agreements with Turkey. (Yerevan and
Ankara signed protocols on establishing diplomatic ties and developing
bilateral relations in Zurich, Switzerland, on October 10 this year.

The agreements need ratification in the parliaments of both Armenia
and Turkey to enter the stage of implementation.)

Hovhannisyan said that the party was going to stage numerous actions
before and on January 12, the day when the Constitutional Court of
Armenia is set to consider the constitutionality of the agreements.

"I can assure you, it will be very restless in the country during
those days," the parliamentarian warned, without elaborating.
