Doc’s Defense: Demonizing Michael Jackson?

Doc’s Defense: Demonizing Michael Jackson?

For Dr. Conrad Murray, the best defense may be a no-holds-barred smear
campaign against Michael Jackson.

Celebrity defender extraordinaire Mark Geragos, who successfully
repped Jackson during his 2004 child-molestation trial, spoke to E!
News yesterday, explaining why he rejected an overture to defend
Murray, why he thinks the doctor may wind up charged with murder, and
what exactly he believes the embattled medico will use as a defense
strategy.

Which, in a word, would be Jackson himself. (And all the
controversies, mysteries, trials and, per Geragos, general "weirdness"
that will forever be part and parcel with the King of Pop.)

"Ultimately, that may be¦what the defense is, to say things about
Michael I’m just not going to say," Geragos said. "Whatever is
required by somebody who is going to defend the doctor, is not
something I can do ethically."

Or personally.

"I’ve been approached," he said in reference to the possibility that
he would join Murray’s defense team. "But clearly I have a conflict of
interest.

"I represented Michael and I would not want to be in a position where
I was deprecating Michael in any way, shape or form."

Part of that defensive deprecation may come in the form of rehashing
Jackson’s drug addictions and his alleged doctor shopping’some reports
claim the star sought prescriptions under 19 different aliases’which
investigators are currently sussing out. (A copy of the search warrant
executed this week shows officials were seeking proof that Murray
bought propofol at a Las Vegas pharmacy.)

A source told E! News that three prescription medications, including
Xanax, were found in Jackson’s system at his time of death, and
Geragos said that he suspects detectives’ efforts at tracking down the
source of the drugs is the reason for the indefinitely delayed
toxicology tests.

When the results do finally come in, expect the pointer fingers’and
the legal action’to fly.

"I can ima is," Geragos said, adding that someone will likely need to
be "blamed" for the death and that a wrongful death lawsuit would not
be unexpected.

"Whether it’s against doctors, whether it’s the Jacksons against AEG,
or AEG against the estate¦Anytime you’ve got the kind of money
that’s at stake here, there will be lawyers, and where there’s
lawyers, there’s lawsuits."

And where there’s Murray, there’s likely a criminal charge¦though
not, Geragos suspects, involuntary manslaughter, which is what he is
currently under investigation for. Instead, Geragos believes attorneys
may have the upper hand if they try to nail him for murder.

"It’s one of the most bizarre things," he said. "It’s literally easier
if you look at jury instructions, to get a jury to convict on
second-degree (murder) than involuntary manslaughter."

As for Jackson, the attorney has high hopes for his legacy. When asked
what he hoped people would remember most about the star, Geragos said
he wanted people to think of "all the greatness¦and forget all the
weirdness."

Too bad a lot of it’s one and the same.

ArmInfo. Citizens’ attitude to their country not least of all depends
on abidance of traffic rules, Prime Minister of Armenia Tigran Sargsyan
said in the government Thursday when approving the national traffic
safety strategy.

He said road accidents with lethal outcome in Armenia several times
exceed the indicators in other states. The premier explained that
the population often neglects traffic rules and seatbelts. Police
officers should use seatbelts in order to demand drivers to do the
same, Tigran Sargsyan said.

He highlighted the necessity of active work to realize the traffic
safety strategy in Armenia. "We should increase public awareness of
the importance of this process till September 1 via Television and
press," he said.

According to Fitch Rating forecast, GDP decline in Armenia by 2009
end will make 15%. Rosinkom informs, that Fitch lowered Armenia’s
rating from "BB" to "BB-", that proves dramatic decrease of position.

Fitch experts consider that external credits shattered Armenian
economy despite the anti-crisis policy carried out by the Government.

Rated the third – is the worst result. This evidences the vulnerability
of the economy, insufficient, narrow base, as well as the dependency
on individuals, working abroad.

Have a question for Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D.-N.J.), but haven’t
had an opportunity to ask? Here is your chance.

Questions submitted to the Armenian Reporter by close of business
this Wednesday, August 12, will be collated and put to Mr. Pallone,
the founding co-chair of the Armenian congressional caucus, later
this week.

First elected to Congress from northern New Jersey in 1988,
Mr. Pallone has emerged as a national leader on Armenian-American
issues. Mr. Pallone is among the stronger supporters in Congress
of the recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide,
U.S. support for independent Armenia, as well as Karabakh’s freedom and
self-determination, issues that continue to serve as cornerstones for
the Armenian-American agenda. Recently Mr. Pallone championed funding
for Iraqi-Armenian refugees’ resettlement in Armenia. He is also a
leading congressional voice on healthcare reform in the United States.

Roll Call: Tarkanian Latest to Announce Bid Against Reid

Tarkanian Latest to Announce Bid Against Reid

Danny Tarkanian, the son of famed University of Nevada Las Vegas former
basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian, on Monday will become the latest
Republican to formally launch a 2010 challenge to Senate Majority
Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.).

`I am certainly not a Washington insider, but speaking just as a
Nevadan, I’m very concerned about the direction Senator Reid is taking
us in Washington,’ Tarkanian said in a statement. =80=9CWe simply
cannot continue to allow our federal government to borrow, spend and
bail out entire industries at the expense of future generations of
Nevadans.’

This is not Tarkanian’s first run for political office. In 2006, he
lost a bid for Nevada secretary of state. He ran for state Senate in
2004 and lost but then filed a civil defamation lawsuit against his
opponent. The suit was just recently settled when his opponent, state
Sen. Mike Schneider (D), agreed to pay Tarkanian $150,000 in damages.

Tarkanian is an attorney and Las Vegas real estate developer. His
mother, Lois, is a Las Vegas city councilwoman. Despite his famous
last name and political experience, he is not likely to be viewed as
the favorite candidate of state or national GOP leaders.

`I have no illusions about the difficult path ahead of me. But as I
learned in my recent court fight against a powerful state Senator,
sometimes you have to stand up for what is right. And sometimes when
you speak truth to power, you can win,’ Tarkanian said. `So without
reservation I am committing myself to this cause – to fight for what
is right for Nevadans. And I hope Republicans, Independents and
Democrats will join me.’

National Republicans have said that Reid is one of their top targets
in 2010, but they have yet to recruit a top-tier challenger for the
race. Tarkanian will become the seventh Republican to join the Senate
fray. State Assemblywoman Sharron Angle, banker John Chachas,
attorney Chuck Kozak and physician Robin Titus are already running,
but none is considered a major threat to Reid. Polls have shown the
Majority Leader is vulnerable if a credible challenger emerges.

Many Republicans are still hopeful that Rep. Dean Heller (R-Nev.) will
decide to enter the race, although the Congressman has not made any
public moves toward doing so.

Danny Tarkanian, a one-time UNLV basketball player and son of the
Rebels’ legendary longtime coach Jerry Tarkanian, has announced he’ll
run for the U.S. Senate seat occupied by Democratic Majority Leader
Harry Reid.

Tarkanian launched a Web site with biography information and is
soliciting money for the campaign.

"Danny Tarkanian’s political philosophy is based on constitutional
conservatism and liberty," his bio says. "He believes in limited
government and opposes the government takeover of private sector
industries. He believes in a smaller government that ` with some
occasional help ` leaves the average person free to achieve his or her
ambitions."

Tarkanian, who runs a real estate business and a basketball camp, is a
two-time electoral loser. He was beaten in a state Senate race and,
most recently, in a race for Secretary of State in 2006 to Ross
Miller.

Tarkanian, a Republican who says he believes in small government and
personal freedom, is fresh off a court victory after suing state
Sen. Mike Schneider for defamation after claims Schneider made during
their state Senate race.

Despite the famous last name, Tarkanian is not considered a favorite
candidate of the state or national party, which has heavily courted
Rep. Dean Heller of the 2nd Congressional District.

`If Agreements Are Uncompleted Visit To Turkey Is Unpurposeful’

`IF AGREEMENTS ARE UNCOMPLETED VISIT TO TURKEY IS UNPURPOSEFUL’

Panorama.am

Armenian-Turkish ties will by no way have influence on the settlement
of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, expert Ruben Melqonyan said at news
conference. The simplest reason to it is that Turkey is not OSCE Minsk
group member. `O would not like to link Armenian-Turkish ties with
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Turkey has not any place or influence on
that group,’ expert said.

Regarding President Serzh Sargsyan’s travel to Turkey in October,
expert said that at joint press conference with Serbian President
Serzh Sargsyan `has sent serious messages’ to the Turkish side.

According to Melqonyan, the President has just reminded Turkish side
about their agreements. `If we consider the agreements uncompleted
then the visit would be unpurposeful.’ He said.
