"Republican candidate Gagik Beglaryan will only benefit if "Heritage"
goes it alone and doesn’t join the ANC," told "A1+" politician
Alexander Iskandaryan. Iskandaryan is certain that "Heritage" will
gather some percentages, but wasn’t able to say how much. According
to him, the opposition is split, is not uniting the society and has
lost its image. Iskandaryan believes that the joining of "Heritage"
and the ANC will not lead to a radical change.

Is it possible for the government to counterattack the opposition’s
united candidate with a more serious figure than Gagik Beglaryan,
say, Robert Kocharyan? In response to that Iskandaryan said:

"If the authorities fear the scenario of the opposition, that is
theoretically possible, but I really don’t think that they will
nominate Robert Kocharyan."

Judging from the current situation, Iskandaryan thinks that the
authorities should stick with their current candidate.

Alexander Iskandaryan believes that the events to be held on May 31
will be a "lighter" version of the presidential elections. In other
words, they will take place like the presidential elections.

"We will witness the split in society and an opposition that will not
acknowledge the legitimacy of the elections. I think that both sides
will fight to get a hold of everything. If they don’t, then we will
possibly see a confrontation-just like the presidential elections. But
this time it will be milder because after all, people are choosing
a mayor and not a president."

Armenia" fraction Aram Safaryan says it is high time for the President
of the United States Aram Safaryan and his Administration to recognize

he said. The Deputy says that he has optimistic attitude because

INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF GENOCIDE SCHOLARS CALLS ON OBAMA TO RECOGNIZE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

PanARMENIAN.Net
18.03.2009 21:03 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Last week, in an open letter to President Barack
Obama, the International Association of Genocide Scholars, the leading
organization of scholars who study genocide, urged Obama to "refer
to the mass slaughter of Armenians as genocide in your commemorative
statement," adding that it was what "you urged President George W. Bush
to do in a letter dated March 18, 2005," the Armenian Assembly of
America (Assembly) told PanARMENIAN.Net.

"By acknowledging the Armenian Genocide," the letter reads, "you would
demonstrate that you are that ‘leader’ you referred to on January
19, 2008, who ‘speaks truthfully about the Armenian Genocide and
responds forcefully to all genocides’." Moreover, "you would signal
a new chapter in U.S. diplomacy. You would also honor the truth of
our own valiant history, which saw brave and selfless Foreign Service
Officers risk their lives rescuing Armenians during the Genocide and
compiling the more than 40,000 pages of documentation now housed in
the National Archives."

In regard to Turkey’s refusal to acknowledge its history, the letter
reads, "We also believe that it is in the interest of the Turkish
people and their future as participants in international, democratic
discourse to acknowledge the responsibility of a previous government
for the genocide of the Armenian people, just as the German government
and people have done in the case of the Holocaust. Over the past
decade a growing number of Turkish scholars, writers, intellectuals,
and publishers have been risking imprisonment and assassination to
tell the truth about the Armenian Genocide. They understood that
facing and accepting the history of one’s country, however dark,
is an essential part of growing a healthy democracy.

"We believe that security and historical truth are not in conflict, and
it is in the interest of the United States to support the principles
of human rights that are at the core of American democracy."

"President Obama’s upcoming trip to Turkey presents a unique
opportunity to address this critical human rights issue and
the irreversible trend toward its reaffirmation. We applaud the
International Association of Genocide Scholars and its President,
Gregory Stanton, for its open letter and its steadfast support of
the importance of historical accuracy as one method of countering
the problem of genocide denial," stated Assembly Executive Director
Bryan Ardouny.

BAKU: Works will be resumed on Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railroad

Works will be resumed on Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railroad

12 March 2009 [10:07] – Today.Az

The restoration of land works in Georgia in the framework of the
construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railroad is expected from March
15.

"Land works at the section where there is a plan to build a new
section of the railroad (Marabda-Kartsakhi) were suspended due to
winter season in December yet the works will be resumed", said
spokesman for the Azerbaijan state railroad Nadir Azmamedov.

He said land works have already been held at the Marabda-Kartsakhi
section at a six kilometer part.

In the framework of the budget of the State Oil Fund, ratified by the
government of Azerbaijan, there is a plan to allot AZN 80 mln for
construction of the BTK Georgian section.

The final document between Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey about BTK
construction was signed in Tbilisi in February of 2007. For
construction of the Georgian section of the railroad Azerbaijan
allocated a lax credit in the amount of $200 mln for the term of 25
years under annual 1% to Georgian "Marabda-Kartsakhi railroad". A new
road extending to 29 kilometers, a point on technical maintenance on
the border with Turkey will be build from these funds in Georgia, and
an old road will be reconstructed. The BTK is estimated at over $600
mln.

In the framework of the project BTK is planning to build a new 105
kilometer branch of the railroad with 76 kilometers to pass via
Turkey, 29 kilometers via Georgia. Moreover, a 183 kilometer section
of the Akhalkalaki-Marabda-Tbilisi railroad will be reconstructed in
Georgia in order to raise the capacity to annual 15 mln tons of
cargo. Also in Akhalkalaki there is a plan to build a point to
transfer the trains from existing section in Georgia to European.

Obama focused on Turkey: Envoy

ANKARA – Turkey’s friendly relations with countries such as Syria and
Iran could contribute to Obama’s policy of dialogue, says
U.S. Ambassador to Ankara James Jeffrey and highlights the importance
Washington attaches to Turkey

The Obama administration believes a solution to regional problems will
be difficult without Turkey’s contributions, the U.S. ambassador in
Ankara has said. In an interview with daily Radikal published
yesterday, Ambassador James Jeffrey said the new U.S. administration
was showing interest in Turkey.

"First of all there is the attention that this administration is
giving to Turkey as a friend and partner and as an important player in
the region," said Jeffrey.

He said Turkey’s friendly relations with countries such as Syria and
Iran could contribute to Obama’s policy of dialogue and stressed a
step forward was taken during Turkish President Abdullah Gül’s meeting
with his Iranian counterpart, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The ambassador confirmed that Gül, who flew to Iran following talks
with visiting U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Ankara over
the weekend, conveyed Washington’s message of sincerity to
Tehran. "We’ll carefully listen to what Gül will say after his
return," Jeffrey was quoted as saying.

While Turkey earlier said it would weigh any requests by both Iran and
the United States to serve as a mediator between the two sides,
Ahmadinejad recently said that his country did not need Turkish
mediation.

In Tehran, Gül advised Iranian officials to seize the opportunity and
the new climate provided by the new U.S. administration. Gül did not
openly say Ankara would act as an intermediary but his statements
revealed Ankara would rather encourage resumption of dialogue between
Tehran and Washington.

The United States and Iran have not had diplomatic ties for three
decades and are now embroiled in a row over Tehran’s nuclear
program. Gül earlier expressed optimism that ties between the two
would improve as both countries were willing to better their
relations.

Jeffrey said the Obama administration was serious about extending a
hand to countries such as Syria and Iran and engaging in dialogue with
them without preconditions. He said that similar to the previous
administration, the current administration also had some doubts, but
he reiterated that they were now extending their hand without any
conditions. The ambassador said that stance had similarities with the
Turkish approach to some countries and problems and said Washington
believed there could be synergy between Turkey and the United
States. Asked if he could give any information about the Turkish
president’s meeting with Ahmadinejad, Jeffrey said they read what was
written in news reports and expressed the hope that the Iranians would
listen to Gül.

Moderate Islam

The previous Bush administration’s hailing Turkey as a moderate
Islamic country was a source of controversy. While in Ankara over the
weekend, Clinton refrained from using that expression and made an
emphasis on Turkey’s secular character, which raised questions if that
was a herald of a new approach by Washington toward Turkey. Jeffrey
said the description of other countries by others was not rational and
said the United States accepted Turkey as it was.

On the alleged genocide of Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman
Empire, he said the Obama administration’s position was not yet clear
but praised efforts for normalization of ties between Turkey and
Armenia.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ On Mar 15 Armenian Consumers Association will hold a
protest action in front of fast food points. Campaign materials will
recorded and sent to International Consumers Association Headquarters
in London, the Association Chairman Melita Hakobyan told a news
conference on Friday.

It’s public knowledge that fast `food is a cause for many diseases
(including cardiovascular diseases and obesity), so the Government and
Armenian Consumers Association need to establish collaboration
marketing of unhealthy food.

According to statistics, over 22 million children in the world are
suffering from obesity.
