March 16 2010

The long-term repercussions of genocide are explored in the 27th annual
Holocaust and Genocide Lecture Series, "Repercussions of Genocide:
Family, Community and Society," every Tuesday through May 25 from
4-5:40 p.m. in Warren Auditorium at Sonoma State University.

This year, the series includes a number of distinguished speakers
from throughout the world, representing survivors of the Holocaust
and other more recent genocides such as those of Rwanda, Bosnia,
Cambodia and more.

The free series includes the screening of the film, "The Rape
of Nanking," a feature-length documentary film about a young
woman’s journey to bring one of the darkest chapters of history to
light. Following the March 30 film, there will be a discussion panel
with community members.

Later in the series, human rights activist and Cambodian survivor,
Arn Chorn-Pond, tells the story of how he survived the horrors of
the Khmer Rouge regime in his lecture "Child of War, Man of Peace"
on April 20.

Included in scheduled lectures is "Inheriting the Holocaust: A Second
Generation Memoir" on May 4 by Dr. Paula Fass of the University
of California, Berkeley, in which she explores her own past as the
daughter of Holocaust survivors to reflect on the nature of history
and memory.

The Robert L. Harris Memorial Lecture on May 11 features Dr. John Roth
of Claremont College discussing "Bricks, Trees, and the Failure(s)
of Ethics: Reflections on the Common Good."

This powerful lecture series offers audience members a rare chance
to listen to and interact with individuals who not only experienced
genocide, but also the immeasurable loss that comes with it. Moreover,
the series is enhanced by the participation of liberators and rescuers,
as well as researchers in the field. At the end of each lecture,
audience members are given the opportunity to ask questions of the
speakers and discuss what they experienced and how they survived.

Remaining lectures for Spring 2010 include:

Eric Williams, Ph.D., Sonoma State University.

Norwegian Government refrained from voicing stance in debates whether
events of 1915 in Ottoman Empire were Genocide, Turkish Today’s
Zaman reports.

"There is no doubt that the Armenians were victims of massive
atrocities in 1915. The Norwegian authorities have not taken a
position on whether the atrocities can be characterized as genocide in
accordance with current criteria. Nor do we believe there are legal
grounds for doing so," reads the statements by the Norwegian Foreign
Ministry, the source says.

Daily notes that Norway is a co-sponsor to concept on international
agreements mentioned in the statement, though the provisions in the
treaties "do not apply retroactively."

In the statement, Norwegian foreign office also expresses support
to Armenia-Turkey reconciliation and calls on early ratification of
the Protocols.

Sweden’s Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt has issued a statement,
commenting on Riksdag’s decision concerning the Armenian Genocide.

Fredrik Reinfeldt expressed his concern that "this could be used
by forces in Turkey that are trying to put a stop to the process of
reconciliation with Armenia and the process of reform in Turkey."

Drawing attention to the ongoing accession talks with the European
Union, Reinfeldt said the reform process in Turkey bodes well for
the country’s possible future EU membership. "It is a process that
takes time and must be allowed to do so," he said.

The Swedish prime minister urged an ease to tensions, saying: "I hope
that these valuable contacts between people will help us get over what
has now happened. What is important now is that we are able to prevent
any deterioration in the extraordinarily good relations between our
countries, by continuing our open and constructive dialogue."

"Armenia’s economy will gain much from the opening of the
Armenian-Turkish relations."

The Armenian army should be cautious and prepared, speaker of the
Armenian National Assembly Hovik Abrahamyan told the open lesson for
Armenian schoolchildren held Monday.

"The Armenian army is the most combat ready in the region. But it
does not mean we should stop on this. It is necessary to develop our
military knowledge, fill our army with professional servicemen and
be cautious and prepared", Abrahamyan said.

"The recognition of the right of Karabakh people for self-determination
and execution of this right is a basis for the resolution of the
Karabakh conflict. The status of Nagorno Karabakh and the security
of its people are most important to us", Abrahamyan said.

He noted that the Karabakh conflict should be settled within the
framework of common sense and truth.

"Armenia’s economy will gain much from the opening of the
Armenian-Turkish relations and establishment of diplomatic ties",
Abrahamyan said.

Meanwhile, he noted that the current policy of Armenian President
Serzh Sargsyan is quite proactive.

Swedish parliament’s decision "inequitable", Erdogan

TURKEY: SWEDISH PARLIAMENT’S DECISION ‘INEQUITABLE’, ERDOGAN

ANKARA

(ANSAmed) Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday that
The approval of Armenian resolution in the Swedish parliament was an
"inconsiderate and inequitable" decision, Anatolia news agency reports
quoting Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan as saying on Friday.

Commenting on the approval of the resolution on Armenian allegations
regarding 1915 incidents in the Swedish parliament, Erdogan said, "an
incident which had occurred 95 years ago and whose reasons, results
and victims have not yet emerged into daylight, has been brought in
front of Turkey just like a threat in many countries. I consider this
as an inconsiderate and inequitable decision." Erdogan said the
decision cast shadow over extremely positive relations between Turkey
and Sweden. "Parliaments convene, vote and rule on incidents that
occurred 95 years ago. This approach lacks logic and commonsense. I am
underlining that such decisions will have a negative impact on our
efforts aiming to normalize relations between Turkey and Armenia."

Swedish Parliament on Thursday approved a resolution on Armenian
allegations regarding 1915 incidents with 131 votes against 130. The
U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs last
Thursday approved the resolution on Armenian allegations. Turkey
strongly rejects the genocide allegations and regards the events as
civil strife in wartime which claimed lives of many Turks and
Armenians. Turkey and Armenia signed two protocols on October 10, 2009
to normalize relations between the two countries. The protocols
envisage the two countries to establish diplomatic ties and open the
border that has been close since 1993.

Istanbul – Turkey has recalled its ambassador to Stockholm after the
Swedish parliament late Thursday adopted a resolution that stated the
World War I-era killings of more than 1 million Armenians and other
minorities by the Ottomans was a genocide.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has cancelled a planned
visit to Sweden in response to the vote.

‘The Turkish government rejects this decision as lacking basis. It
is obvious that the decision was made taking into consideration some
political interests for the elections that would take place in Sweden
in September 2010,’ Erdogan said in a statement.

‘The resolution does not correspond to the close friendship of our
two nations,’ Erdogan said.

The resolution passed by a single vote after several members of
Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt’s ruling centre-right coalition
broke ranks and voted with the red-green opposition.

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt told Swedish radio news that he
regretted the decision, saying he feared it could ‘be used’ by reform
critics in Turkey.

Turkey earlier this month recalled its ambassador to Washington over a
genocide resolution vote in a US House of Representatives committee,
even as it is unlikely the bill will make it to a full vote in the
chamber.

Last year, Turkey also recalled its ambassador to Canada after Prime
Minister Stephen Harper referred to a genocide.

Turkey has rejected the genocide claim, saying the number of Armenians
killed was much lower and that the deaths were the result of violent
turbulence that also affected other groups at the time.

Armenia and Turkey are currently engaged in a process that aims to
restore their diplomatic relations. Ankara has warned that efforts
to tar it with the genocide claim could further damage the already
troubled reconciliation process with Yerevan.

President Serzh Sargsyan received the delegation headed by the Prime
Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk.

Greeting the guests, President Sargsyan noted that the Armenian-Polish
relations have a great potential, and Armenia wishes to fully utilize
it by deepening the cooperation in the political, economic, cultural
and other spheres. According to Serzh Sargsyan, "There are two very
important bases for it – the good relations between our peoples and
the Eastern Partnership Program co-authored by Poland."

Prime Minister Donald Tusk said "the Armenian-Polish relations
are steadily developing and Poland is interested in expanding the
framework of bilateral cooperation." At the same time he underlined
that Armenia could always rely upon Poland’s support.

As an important factor of development of relations, Serzh Sargsyan
mentioned the active cultural exchange and the existence of the Polish
Armenian community. Touching upon the recognition of the Armenian
Genocide by the Polish Sejm in 2005, Serzh Sargsyan said it’s another
evidence of mutual understanding and trust between the two peoples.

The Armenian President and the Polish Prime Minister exchanged views
on the possible directions of Armenian-Polish cooperation, and the
intensification of trade-economic ties.

Prime Minister Tusk said his country appreciates President Sargsyan’s
efforts targeted at the establishment of peace and stability in
the region.
