Asbarez: ANC NJ Representatives Meet with Senator Cory Booker

August 28,  2020

Members of the Armenian National Committee of New Jersey hosted a meeting with Senator Cory Booker during August recess.

OLD TAPPAN, NJ – Representatives from the Armenian National Committee of New Jersey and activists met with Senator Cory Booker virtually during August recess to discuss the legislative priorities of the Armenian American community of New Jersey.

ANC of New Jersey co-chairs Karine Shnorhokian and Aram Tramblian as well as ANC NJ activists Ani Tchaghlasian, James Sahagian, John L. Shahdanian II and Joseph Ariyan and other ANCA leaders including ANCA Government Affairs Director Tereza Yerimyan and ANCA Eastern Region Executive Director Tamar Gregorian discussed US-Armenia relations, security and stability for Artsakh, and key legislative issues that will be voted on in the Senate in the near future including the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021 with the senator.

“As a friend of Senator Booker since childhood, I was keenly aware of his many strong Armenian relationships. It was my great pleasure, on behalf of the ANC NJ, to help facilitate this wonderful discussion of Armenian issues ranging from aid to Armenia, de-mining of Artsakh, all the way to ensuring that the Library of Congress appropriately change the classification from “Armenian Massacres” to “Armenian Genocide.” Senator Booker was engaged and informed on the issues and I look forward to his continuing support and friendship towards the Armenian community in the years to come,” said Shahdanian.

Senator Booker, who is up for re-election in November, re-affirmed his support on key legislative issues, including requesting foreign aid for continued de-mining efforts in Artsakh – a program that has saved numerous lives. Constituents also informed the Senator on the ANCA’s leadership in requesting that the Library of Congress change its subject heading from “Armenian Massacres” to “Armenian Genocide,” following the U.S. House and Senate’s passage of H.Res.296 and S.Res.150 reaffirming the Armenian Genocide.

An advocate for the Armenian American community, Senator Booker joined Senator Menendez in a joint statement on July 17 condemning Azerbaijan’s attacks on sovereign Armenia.

“We are honored that the Senator took the time to personally meet with the ANC of New Jersey, and thanked him for his support on issues that are important to the Armenian American community in New Jersey. We look forward to a continued partnership with Senator Booker,” said Tramblian, ANC of New Jersey co-chair.

Ilham Aliyev will not risk to participate in BBC’s HARDtalk – Elibekova

Panorama, Armenia

Politics 17:57 18/08/2020
BBC's "HARDtalk" presenter Stephen Sackur invited Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev on Twitter, to participate in his HARDtalk
after the episode with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Panorama.am turned to expert in Azerbaijan Angela Elibekova to comment on the possible reaction by Aliyev. Elibekova reminded that thus far the Azerbaijani side has not reacted to the interview offer, suggesting Azerbaijani would likely refrain from attending the interview.

“Azerbaijan has recently appointed a new foreign minister who needs to get into the topic. Former Minister Elmar Mammadyarov would likely go to that interview which is not the case with the new one. President Ilham Aliyev will not risk to talk to Stephen Sackur and may send an assistant instead which is again is of low possibility,” said Elibekova.

In her words, the representatives of Azerbaijan would not have enough courage to participate in the suggested format of the interview. Alternatively, they can provide only their standards points regardless of the questions posed.

Armenian government to support grape growers, winemakers and brandy makers

Panorama, Armenia

Economy 14:57 13/08/2020Armenia

The Armenian government on Thursday announced a measure to support grape growers, winemakers and brandy producers, who are among the hardest hit in the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the official figures, both the home sales and exports of the products have dropped by more than 30 percent due to the coronavirus crisis.

“All this has affected the companies in two ways: first, they have seen a decrease in monetary income due to a drop in sales, and second, due to the deterioration of the conditions in this area, banks are more cautious and reluctant to provide loans,” Minister of Economy Tigran Khachatryan told a weekly cabinet meeting, presenting the support program.

Under the support program, subsidized loans will be provided to grape suppliers, brandy and wine companies, while the government will fully subsidize the interests on the loans.

This is the 24th measure announced by the government to mitigate the economic impact of the pandemic.

Armenian PM in BBC interview: Azerbaijan attacked Armenia first

JAM News
Aug 14 2020

JAMnews, Yerevan

In a recent interview with the BBC, Nikol Pashinyan says Azerbaijan attacked Armenia first during the July escalation on the border.

Pashinyan also comments during the interview on Armenia’s relations with Russia and the West, the results of his work in the last two years as prime minister, the effectiveness of the government’s fight against the coronavirus.

Key points of the interview

In response to questions from HARDtalk host Stephen Sakur, the Armenian PM touched on:

the July military exacerbation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border

Nikol Pashinyan denied the statements of official Baku that Armenia was the instigator of hostilities. He again stressed the need to “establish a monitoring system on the line of contact” so that after each escalation the international community does not hear two opposite versions of events.

The settlement of the Karabakh conflict

The Prime Minister of Armenia believes that peace cannot be achieved by unilateral actions of Armenia.  He accused Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev of belligerent rhetoric and an attempt to resolve the conflict by force.

His statement “Artsakh is Armenia, period!”

“Why did I say that Nagorno-Karabakh, Artsakh [the Armenian name of the territory] is Armenia?  First, Nagorno-Karabakh has been inhabited by the indigenous Armenian people for several thousand years, and, by the way, the name Artsakh is also several thousand years old ”.

 The geopolitical orientation of Armenia:

“Russia is a strategic partner of Armenia in all areas, in particular, in the economy and security, and with the European Union, Armenia signed an Agreement on Comprehensive and Expanded Partnership.  Yerevan receives the main support in carrying out internal political reforms from the EU. We participate in NATO peacekeeping missions in Afghanistan, Lebanon, Kosovo and Mali. In addition, we effectively cooperate with the United States in the military sphere.”

Armenia’s relations with the United States and Iran:

“We have no problems in relations with the US and Iran. And we are doing everything in our power to maintain our current good relations with both the US and Iran.”

The results of two years as prime minister after the velvet revolution of 2018

The head of government noted that last year Armenia recorded a record economic growth in Europe – GDP grew by 7.6%:

“The pandemic situation interrupted our flight, but we will continue it.”

Criticism of the opposition in his address

“Armenia is a democratic country and the opposition is free to express its opinion.  I am happy that the opposition in Armenia now operates much freer than before the revolution. “

Accusations of ineffectiveness in the government’s fight against the coronavirus pandemic

“Unfortunately, the epidemic is developing all over the world.  An anti-epidemic strategy has been adopted in our country.  And this strategy is consistent with the conditions of our country.  Let’s not rush and draw conclusions only after overcoming the epidemic. “

Participation in a banquet in Nagorno-Karabakh without a protective mask in the midst of an epidemic:

“On that day, we acted according to the rules that existed in Nagorno-Karabakh.”

Social media reaction

Nikol Pashinyan’s interview with the BBC has actively seized upon by netizens of Armenian social media.

Here are some comments:

“Very weak interview: from weak English to not very strong confrontation. Apparently, Pashinyan thought that there would be nice little questions that journalists of Radio Liberty have been asking lately.  But he was wrong.”

“According to Pashinyan, he and his government did everything right in the fight against coronavirus.  And this is said by a person whose country is by far the leader in the region in terms of mortality and infection rates. “

“Attempts to ridicule the fact that the government has failed to cope with the fight against coronavirus seemed arrogant.”

“There was a one-sided interview.  It seems that the host has set a goal to make Armenia guilty on all counts, and not to hear Pashinyan.”

Armenian Startup Krisp Secures $5 Million Funding

August 6,  2020

Krisp, an Armenian startup, produces a software that blocks background noise on phone calls

An Armenian startup company, Krisp, received $5 million in what is known as a series A financing for its software and technology, which silences ambient sounds and isolates voice for calls, reported Tech Crunch on Wednesday.

With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing many to work from home, or in isolation, the demand for the software has surged, with many companies opting for the product for their employees and business ventures.

According to Tech Crunch, Krisp applies a machine learning system to audio in real time that has been trained on what is and isn’t the human voice. “What isn’t a voice gets carefully removed even during speech, and what remains sounds clearer. It can work on practically any device,” Tech Crunch explained.

Initially, the company began offering its standalone software for free, with a paid tier that removed time limits.

The Krisp app, now available on Windows and Macs, uses machine learning to silence background noise so the voices of the people on the call are heard more clearly.

Krisp co-founder and CEO Davit Baghdasaryan told Tech Crunch that the COVID-19 crisis accelerated the company’s expansion plans, with larger businesses signing up, among them a large caller center with 40,000 employees.

The company was founded in Armenia and currently has two teams, one of which is based in the United States.

Baghdasaryan also explained that all voice data collected on the app remains private and is stored the device and is not sent to a cloud server, alleviating concern regarding privacy.

“The next iteration will tell you not just about noise, but give you real time feedback on how you are performing as a speaker,” Baghdasaryan explained to Tech Crunch.

The series A funding, which is when investors commit their capital in exchange for an equity interest in a company, came from Storm Ventures,  Sierra Ventures, TechNexus and Hive Ventures.
