Armenian ex-SRC chair Davit Ananyan has realized it is necessary to quickly escape from the sinking ship, said Armenian ex-Ambassador to the Vatican Mikael Minasyan referring to Ananyan's resignation.

According to him, "it will not save him from his share of responsibility, but at least we can say for sure that Mr. Ananyan has not gone mad."

Minasyan also noted that Chief of General Staff of Armenian Armed Forces Artak Davtyan has denied something "I had never suspected, that the Osa-AKM is a good weapon and that the Armenian Armed Forces needed it."

"The fact that these weapons were produced in the 80's or 70's does not mean anything," he added.

Mikael Minasyan has earlier claimed that Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan is involved in the international arms trade. According to Minasyan, Pashinyan is ready to do everything for money and power.

As the ex-envoy noted: “For this, he tried to negotiate with our two largest enemies." "Nikol Pashinyan does not respect the Armenian people, does not respect human life, the victims of March 1 have always been and will be political for him,” Minasyan added.

As reported earlier, Armenian State Revenue Committee's head Davit Ananyan has submitted his resignation. He took to his Facebook to share the news to "dispel the news in the press."

Threats Against Armenians in Turkey Intensify

Hrant Dink Widow Receives Death Threats.

Days after an attack and vandalism on a second Armenian church in Istanbul, the Hrant Dink Foundation reported receiving death threats via email against Dink’s widow, Rakel, and the organization.

Upon receiving the threats on May 28, the Hrant Dink Foundation filed a report with the police. Turkey’s Interior Ministry on Saturday announced that suspect was taken into custody on suspicion of sending the threatening messages.

According to Daily Sabah, the suspect, identified as a 25-year-old professional tile layer, was in the possession of a cell phone that is believed to have been used to send the threats. Authorities confiscated the cell phone and the suspect is in custody in Istanbul.

“Let’s just say you’ll have to flee or you’ll have to die – and this time it will be Rakel Dink and that lawyer who [will] get it,” said the death threat email, according to a statement issued by the Hrant Dink Foundation.

“We may turn up one night, when you least expect it,” was another phrase used in the threat. This phrase was used around the time of Hrant Dink’s assassination on January 19, 2007.

According to the statement, the threat also accused the Hrant Dink Foundation of “weaving tales of harmony” between Turks and Armenians.

“The recent rise in unconstrained hate speech and racist, discriminatory discourse only serves to trigger, encourage and instigate such horrendous attitudes. It is the duty and responsibility of all actors engaged in politics in Turkey to work towards ensuring equality, freedom and justice for all citizens. We therefore believe that it is our duty to share this statement with the public to remind the authorities of their responsibilities and to emphasize the serious nature of the climate that has been created,” said the Hrant Dink Foundation statement.

The United Staes Commission on International Religious Freedom on Wednesday issued a statement of Twitter saying, “USCIRF is concerned by reports of attacks on Armenian churches, threats against the Hrant Dink Foundation (@HrantDinkFnd), and other incidents contributing to a sense of fear and insecurity among religious and other minorities in #Turkey.”

“This wave on anti-Armenian attacks – committed during the very week that the White House issued an Executive Order prioritizing the promotion of international religious liberty – has yet to be condemned by the Administration,” said Armenian National Committee of America Executive Director Aram Hamparian.

“Our U.S. Ambassador in Ankara, David Satterfield, needs to demonstrate – with his words and actions – that the United States will not tolerate intimidation, incitement, and violence against at-risk Christians on the territory of present-day Turkey. He can start by personally paying a call on the Hrant Dink Foundation and visiting one of the targeted Armenian Churches,” added Hamparian.

YEREVAN, MAY 16, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian government distributed a total of 84,4 billion drams on the sidelines of its anti-crisis measures between 48,400 legal entities and nearly 1,1 million individuals, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said during a press conference today, presenting 100 facts about the new Armenia.

The PM firstly reminded that the government has adopted a total of 18 anti-crisis measures to eliminate the socio-economic consequences of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

“Within the framework of the anti-crisis measures a total of 84,4 billion drams have been distributed as of today, which were used by 48,400 legal entities and nearly 1 million 100 thousand individuals. With the first anti-crisis measure the government subsidized the interests rates of loans worth 31,7 billion AMD received by 513 economic entities. The loan received for paying salaries and taxes has been subsidized completely, in other words, the loan is available at 0%, the expenditures for raw materials, equipment, utility bills and good  were subsidized by 6-10%, this means that the loan is available at 2-6%”, the PM said.

According to the 2nd anti-crisis measure, the government subsidized the interests rates of agricultural loans worth 11,6 billion AMD of 8,195 economic entities and individuals completely, the loan is available at 0%. Pashinyan added that the government has also provided 6 billion drams to the banking system to provide agricultural loans. “As we had a crisis situation, and the banks were seeing greater risks for providing agricultural loans, we have provided 6 billion drams from the budget to the banks so that they can provide loans to the rural people. Later the banks must return these sums to the government”, Nikol Pashinyan said.

With the 3rd anti-crisis measure the Armenian government subsidized the privileged loans worth 8,3 billion AMD of 744 economic entities which have a 24-500 million AMD annual turnover.

The Armenian government on May 14 made a decision to extend the coronavirus-related state of emergency for another 30 days, until June 13.

According to the latest data, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Armenia has reached 4,283. 1,791 patients have already recovered. 55 death cases have been registered.

Strength, service and sustenance — Armenian restaurants unite to donate meals to MGH

Wicked Local, MA

By Kristina Ayanian

In honor of the 105th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, five Armenian-owned restaurants collectively donated more than 150 meals on April 24 to fuel the night shift crew tirelessly working the Emergency Department at Massachusetts General Hospital during the global pandemic.

Ani Catering & Cafe, Anoush’ella Kitchen, Jana Grill & Bakery, Noor Mediterranean Grill and Phinix Mediterranean Kitchen each added their own flare to individually packaged meals filled to the brim with flavorful kebabs and falafel, shawarma wraps and stuffed grape leaves complimented with hummus, warm rice and zesty salad.

The sound of sirens was buzzing in Boston on a blustery Friday night, as police were escorting cars to move out of traffic. Ambulances were rushing in as quickly as they were leaving the parking lot outside of the main entrance on Fruit Street. Three vehicles pulled up to find grateful emergency staff ready to help unload 20 large bags of food onto two overflowing carts. Moments later, restaurant owners waved goodbye, as MGH staff carefully wheeled the carts inside to hungry and fatigued frontline workers. The owners glanced at each other in silence with a shared sense of longing standing six-feet apart before heading to their cars to go home. Given the circumstances, they miss out on the personal touch, that face to face delivery to their customers and comforting each other on the solemn occasion.

“I believe that a home-cooked meal can heal the soul,” said Arsen Karageozian, owner of Noor Mediterranean Grill in Somerville, redefining the broader meaning of food in the Armenian cuisine. “I hope my food provided a bit of comfort that our heroes on the front lines deserve.”

Each restaurant carefully timed their meal preparations in insulated bags and boxes to ensure the meals were hot and ready upon delivery.

“Everyone followed us to the break room,” said the charge coordinator after delivery.

You could see their smiles through their face masks in pictures sent to the Armenian Weekly.

Food is an _expression_ of love for Nina Festekjian and her family. As the owner of Anoush’ella in Boston, she strives to share that passion with the greater Boston community.

“Armenian food is a way to feel continually connected to our heritage while connecting with our family and friends in the present,″ she said.

“We love the community and we cherish any opportunity we can get to show how much the community truly means to us,” said Hovannes Janessian, owner of Ani Catering & Cafe of Belmont, while emotionally reflecting upon the memories shared in the community through his family’s food throughout the years. “Our community was built on collective involvement.”

While these successful Armenian-owned food joints regularly donate food individually, their unity on April 24 proves that Turkey failed to exterminate the Armenian population. They hustled overtime to collectively represent the entire Armenian community of Boston and brought smiles to those who needed it most on that Friday night, together.

“Most of these small-time food operators are usually busy competing against each other but seeing them come together for a cause bigger than them individually is a powerful moment,” said Sam Pogosov of Phinix Mediterranean Grill in Waltham.

He recalled a powerful Armenian message from his grandfather that guides his everyday life, “Do good and throw it in the water. It shall not sink.”

“Uniting together was a small gesture but it had such a powerful symbolic meaning to me,” said Sarkis Keryan, owner of Jana Grill & Bakery of Watertown. “Most of us (Armenians) are now alive because our great grandfathers or great grandmothers were able to escape the genocide, go through incredible hardships and build a life for themselves and their children. By uniting and helping others, we not only show unity in chaos but we also celebrate all the survivors of the Armenian Genocide.”

Azerbaijani press: MFA: US supports Azerbaijan’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 6

Trend:

The US supports independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan within internationally recognized borders, Head of the Press Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Leyla Abdullayeva said, Trend reports on May 5.

Abdullayeva has made the remark commenting on the information disseminated in the Armenian media about the adoption of a resolution on the “recognition” of the fictitious regime created in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan by the Senate of the Minnesota state.

She said that according to the Senate office, this paper, presented as a resolution of the Minnesota’s Senate, signed by Senator Mary Kiffmeyer, the Secretary of the Senate and the Chairman of the Senate’s Committee on Administration and Rules, is a personal statement of the senator and is symbolic.

“No voting is required to accept such a paper, which can be submitted by any member of the Senate; that is, it was not adopted by the state of Minnesota as an official resolution. As seen, this paper, presented by the Minnesota Senate supposedly as “recognition” of the fictitious regime in the occupied Azerbaijani territories, is in fact a symbolic “document” signed by the senator, not reviewed and not put to a vote in the State Senate,” Abdullayeva noted.

Leyla Abdullayeva pointed out hat the recognition of any structure as a “state” is outside the Minnesota state's legislative authority.

"As for the US position at the federal level, it is clear that the US supports independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan," she said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on the withdrawal of its armed forces from Nagorno Karabakh and the surrounding districts.

Canada fully supports and the peaceful resolution of the conflict and the OSCE Minsk Group process – Foreign Affairs Minister

Panorama, Armenia
May 7 2020

In a letter addressed to the Armenian National Committee of Canada (ANCC) on May 4th, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. François-Philippe Champagne clarified Canada’s position on Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), reported the ANCC.

Contrary to the diplomatically irresponsible and one-sided tweet published by the Canadian Embassy in Ankara, following the General Election held in the Republic of Artsakh on March 31st, Minister Champagne clearly stated that Canada fully supports the OSCE Minsk Group Process, the peaceful resolution of the conflict and the principle of self-determination – amongst others – as outlined in the Helsinki Final Act.

“While I regret any concern that this tweet may have caused the Armenian National Committee of Canada and the Canadian-Armenian community, I would like to reassure you that there has not been any change to our long-standing position on Nagorno-Karabakh” said the minister in his letter.

“We are satisfied to see that the Minister has restored the balance vis-à-vis Canada’s position on this issue of paramount importance to Armenian-Canadians, effectively overriding the lopsided and foreign-influenced tweet published by the embassy in Ankara” said Hrag Tarakdjian and Shahen Mirakian, co-presidents of the ANCC.

“The position of Canada remains based on our strong and consistent support for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Minsk Group’s work toward a negotiated solution, and our position does not prejudge the outcome of this process. Canada agrees with the Minsk Group that there can be no military solution to the conflict and that any resolution must take into account the Helsinki Final Act. We want peaceful societies, and we will support the solution, when achieved.” Concluded the minister in his letter addressed to the ANCC.

“There is still a lot more that needs to be done on this issue and the ANCC will continue to stand at the forefront and work with our government to ensure that the fundamental human rights of the people of Artsakh are protected and upheld” concluded Tarakdjian and Mirakian.

The source reminds, that on April 3rd, the ANCC forwarded a letter to Minister Champagne, raising serious concerns regarding the tweet, asking for its retraction and for the Minister to recall the ambassador for his irresponsibility and inability to uphold Canada’s balanced foreign policy.
