            Could be Ending Soon…

Patrick Shanahan, Acting Defense Secretary of the United States, sent
on June 6, 2019, a harsh letter to his counterpart, Hulusi Akar,
Turkey’s Minister of Defense. Shanahan threatened to end Turkey’s
participation in the most advanced US air force jet F-35 program and
implement sanctions should Turkey persist in acquiring S-400 missiles
from Russia next month. The Russian missiles are incompatible with
NATO’s weapons system and risk to compromise the F-35 jets operations,
thus jeopardizing U.S. national security.

Turkish President Erdogan has repeatedly rejected U.S. complaints and
insisted on acquisition of the Russian missiles for which Turkey has
signed a $2.5 billion loan agreement with Russia. Several Turkish
military officers are already in Russia learning how to operate the
new missiles. In the meantime, the United States has informed Turkey
that Turkish pilots who had been training on the F-35 jets in the
United States for several months have to depart from the country by
July 31, 2019.

Acting Secretary of Defense Shanahan’s letter sent shock waves into
Turkey’s foreign policy and security establishment as Turkey doesn’t
yet know “how to reply,” a senior Turkish security source told
Al-Monitor. In the meantime, Turkey had paid over a billion dollars to
acquire 100 F-35 jets. Pres. Erdogan announced that he will demand the
payment back from the United States. Furthermore, Turkey, as a partner
in the F-35 program, has been producing certain parts of the jets
which will no longer be sourced from Turkey.

Shanahan wrote to Turkey’s Defense Minister: “All actions taken on the
F-35 are based on risks the S-400 presence in Turkey would have and
they are separate from Russia-related Countering America’s Adversaries
Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) sanctions. There is strong bipartisan
U.S. Congressional determination to see CAATSA sanctions imposed on
Turkey if Turkey acquires the S-400. In addition to threatening the
security of platforms like the F-35, Turkey’s procurement of the S-400
will hinder your nation’s ability to enhance or maintain cooperation
with the United States and within NATO, lead to Turkish strategic and
economic over-dependence on Russia, and undermine Turkey’s very
capable defense industry and ambitious economic development goals.
Pursuing this path will cause a loss in jobs, gross domestic product,
and international trade. President Trump committed to boost bilateral
trade from $20 billion currently to more than $75 billion, however
that may be challenging if the United States imposes CAATSA
sanctions.”

On June 14, 2019, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu threatened
that Turkey will retaliate to U.S. sanctions: “One country cannot give
instructions to another on how to act. The US should abandon this
behavior. Everyone is concerned about this. How far can it go? If the
US takes steps against us, then we will be forced to take reciprocal
steps,” he stated in an interview with NTV channel.

What are the next steps? Pres. Erdogan has learned from previous
experiences that Pres. Trump does not always listen to his Cabinet
members or to members of Congress. Erdogan has had several phone
conversations to convince Trump to form a joint study group which will
buy time for Turkey. In the meantime, naturally-occurring or
artificially-created world events may change the present situation.
The Presidents of Turkey and the United States are scheduled to meet
on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit in Tokyo at the end of June. That
would be Erdogan’s last chance to persuade Trump to change his
decision on the Russian missile acquisition in July.

If unable to change Trump’s mind, Erdogan will go ahead and acquire
the Russian missiles in order to avoid being humiliated by the United
States. However, that would only be the beginning of a larger
conflict. The United States would impose sanctions on Turkey,
seriously damaging its economy. Erdogan could retaliate by banning
NATO from using the Incirlik air base in Turkey. The United States
would then relocate its jets to Jordan (as Germany has done) or Greece
(a NATO member) or Cyprus.

This vicious cycle of punches and counter punches could end up by
either Turkey withdrawing from NATO or NATO deciding to expel Turkey.

The removal of Turkey from NATO is a step that has been anticipated
for a long time, ever since Erdogan has been acting contrary to the
letter and spirit of the NATO agreement. Even though expelling Turkey
from NATO is a serious decision fraught with major consequences,
Erdogan is the cause by repeatedly violating Turkey’s commitments to
NATO and ignoring all its warnings.

The obvious winner in this situation will be Russia which will succeed
in weakening NATO by excluding Turkey — the country with the second
largest military in NATO, while earning from the sale of the missiles
desperately needed income for its collapsed economy.

However, Russia’s success may be short-lived. As soon as a
geo-political conflict arises between Russia and Turkey, the
newly-formed love-fest will fall apart, putting an end to Turkish
acrobatic moves between East and West, and getting abandoned by both.

3 -        50 Years of Sunny Days: Sesame Workshop

            Honors Michelle Obama, Carnegie Corp.

NEW YORK—At Sesame Workshop’s 17th annual benefit dinner on June 5,
the organization honored Former First Lady Michelle Obama with the
Joan Ganz Cooney Award, named for Sesame Street’s creator. With
special performances and honorees spanning the organization’s past,
present, and future, the evening celebrated Sesame Street’s 50-year
history of helping kids everywhere grow smarter, stronger, and kinder.

“For half a century, Sesame Workshop has been on a continuous,
relentless, and successful mission to help kids get ready for
school—and for life,” said Jeffrey D. Dunn, President and CEO of
Sesame Workshop. “As we mark this historic anniversary, we’re proud to
honor Former First Lady Michelle Obama, a tireless champion of
children and families who shares our commitment to improving the lives
of kids around the world.”

Sesame Street co-founder Joan Ganz Cooney joined Lin-Manuel Miranda to
present Mrs. Obama with the award. “When I became First Lady, and I
knew that I wanted to help kids reach their potential, my first
question was a simple but familiar one: Can you tell me how to get to
Sesame Street?” said Mrs. Obama. “I cannot tell you how proud and
thankful I am to come here tonight as a Sesame Street partner. You are
always ahead of the curve, always out there observing, and learning,
and creating new ways to help kids and parents navigate the world
around them.” [Watch the full speech here.]

Held at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, the event was hosted by
Hoda Kotb and included special guests John Oliver and Chrissy Teigen.
The evening culminated with performances from John Legend and the
Sesame Street Muppets, finishing with the Sesame Street classic,
“Sing.”

The event also honored the Ford Foundation and the Carnegie
Corporation of New York, which were among the first funders of Sesame
Street in the 1960s. Original cast member Sonia Manzano presented
Visionary Awards to Carnegie Corporation president Vartan Gregorian
and Ford Foundation president Darren Walker, who accepted on behalf of
their organizations. Remarks from Julia Stasch, president of the John
D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, highlighted their historic
$100M award to help Sesame Workshop and the International Rescue
Committee bring early childhood education to children affected by
refugee crises. On behalf of the LEGO Foundation, CEO John Goodwin
accepted the Innovation Award for their commitment to support
displaced children through the power of playful learning.

“In 1969, the audacious philanthropy of the Carnegie Corporation and
Ford Foundation made the creation of Sesame Street possible, helping
to improve the lives of millions of less-advantaged children around
the world,” said Sherrie Westin, Sesame Workshop’s President of Social
Impact and Philanthropy. “Fifty years later, we’re thrilled that
similarly bold commitments from the MacArthur Foundation and the LEGO
Foundation are helping us give millions of displaced children the
tools they need to thrive.”

The benefit raised over $4.5 million, which will help Sesame Workshop
deliver on its mission to help kids everywhere grow smarter, stronger,
and kinder. Today, the organization reaches children and families in
more than 150 countries, including areas where children have no other
access to quality early education. All of Sesame Workshop’s social
impact work—from providing early learning to millions of children
affected by the Syrian and Rohingya refugee crises to addressing tough
topics like homelessness and foster care in the United States—is made
possible with the generous support of like-minded partners including
government, foundations, corporations, and individuals, as well as
proceeds from the annual benefit.

Sesame Workshop thanked presenting sponsors American Greetings
Corporation, Hasbro, Inc., Ogden CAP Properties LLC, Party City,
WarnerMedia Entertainment, and YouTube Kids for their exceptional
generosity toward this celebration, and to Cipriani Wall Street,
StarGroup Productions, Preston Bailey Designs, and The Jim Henson
Company for their support.

4-         Maine House Speaker Sara Gideon to challenge Sen. Susan
Collins in 2020

Maine House Speaker Sara Gideon, a Democrat with Armenian roots, is
expected to formally announce in the coming weeks that she’s running
for Republican Sen. Susan Collins’ seat in 2020, five Democratic
sources confirmed, according to HuffPost.

She will likely launch her campaign shortly after the close of the
state’s legislative session on June 19, the three Democratic sources
in Maine and two national Democratic strategists said.

Defeating Collins, the Maine moderate who infuriated liberals with her
vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, is key to
Democratic hopes of winning back control of the Senate in 2020.

Gideon is a top-tier recruit for the race and is expected to have at
least the tacit backing of establishment groups like the Democratic
Senatorial Campaign Committee and EMILY’s List.

At the same time, the Senate GOP is marshaling its resources to defend
Collins, who has long outperformed other Republicans on the ballot in
Maine.

Gideon hinted last October that she would toss her hat in the ring
following Collins’ controversial vote for Kavanaugh.

“Maine deserves a champion in the US Senate,” Gideon wrote in a
Facebook post at the time. “After November I will be seriously
considering how I can elevate the voices of people who deserve and
demand to be heard and represented in Washington, DC.”

Gideon, a 47-year-old mother of three, has served in the Maine House
of Representatives since 2012, representing the towns of Freeport and
Pownal. Her legislative initiatives have focused on boosting the
state’s economy, tackling the opioid crisis, investing in sustainable
energy and increasing access to universal health care.

Earlier this week, Maine Gov. Janet Mills (D) signed a bill sponsored
by Gideon that expands access to abortion in the state by allowing
health care professionals who are not doctors ― such as nurse
practitioners and physician assistants ― to perform the procedure.

Gideon is a graduate of George Washington University. She spent her
professional career as an advertising account executive for a
nationally renowned newspaper.

She is the youngest of four daughters. Her father is a pediatrician
who immigrated to America from India. Her mother is a
second-generation Armenian American, whose parents escaped the
Armenian genocide.

5-         Prayers for ABMDR patients offered throughout Prelacy churches

LOS ANGELES—On Sunday, June 9, as the Armenian Apostolic Church
commemorated the feast of Pentecost, Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian,
Prelate, presided over the Divine Liturgy and delivered a sermon at
St. Sarkis Church, in Pasadena.

The day also had great significance for the worldwide family of the
Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry, as prayers for ABMDR patients and
volunteers were offered at all Prelacy churches, by the directive of
Archbishop Mardirossian, and parishioners were familiarized with the
work of ABMDR.

In his sermon, Archbishop Mardirossian stated that 2019 represents a
great milestone for ABMDR, as it marks the 20th anniversary of the
founding of the organization. The Prelate praised the dedication of
ABMDR’s volunteers and thousands of donors across the globe, and urged
congregants to generously support its cause. “May God grant good
health to all and lead the members of ABMDR to continued success in
their life-saving mission,” the Prelate said.

Subsequently Archbishop Mardirossian invited Dr. Frieda Jordan,
President of ABMDR, to deliver remarks. “As we celebrate our 20th
anniversary this year, we convey our heartfelt gratitude to Archbishop
Mardirossian, the Armenian Church, and the Armenian community as a
whole, for their unwavering support,” Dr. Jordan said. “Twenty years
ago, we established ABMDR with a singular quest: to provide patients
suffering from leukemia and other blood-related illnesses with their
last hope of survival, namely matched donors for facilitating bone
marrow stem cell transplants. Toward this goal, we have built a
substantial registry of bone marrow donors throughout the world, and,
to date, helped save the lives of 32 patients through bone marrow
transplants.”

“Today, as we look ahead to the future,” Dr. Jordan concluded, “we
once again thank the worldwide Armenian community for its steadfast
support, and pray that God will give everyone involved in ABMDR the
strength to carry out our work for another 20 years.”

Following the church service, ABMDR Board members and volunteers
remained on hand to answer questions by congregants and provide
information on how to join ABMDR as potential bone marrow donors.

Lebanon Honorary Consul Kicks Off Fresno-Ainjar Sister City Initiative

From l to r: Lebanon’s Ambassador to Argentina Johnny Ibrahim, Carholicos Aram I, Lebanon’s Honorary Consul to Fresno Harry Nadjarian

Lebanon’s Honorary Consul in Fresno Harry Nadjarian is working to establish a sister city relationship between Fresno and the mainly Armenian-populated city of Ainjar in Lebanon as his first undertaking since being named to the position in late March.

Catholicos Aram I with Harry Nadjarian

Nadjarian, who has been an active member and supporter of the Armenian-American community for decades and has taken a leadership and philanthropic role in advancing educational programs and organizations devoted to empowering young Armenians to further the Armenian Cause, has already kicked off the sister city process and for this purpose he traveled to Beirut this week.

Nadjarian met with His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia in Antelias and presented the sister city plan to the pontiff. He also provided perspective and thoughts about issues related to the California Armenian community to the Catholicos.

On Thursday, Nadjarian held a second meeting with Aram I, this time accompanied by Lebanon’s Ambassador to Argentina, Johnny Ibrahim, who was until recently Lebanon’s Consul General to Los Angeles.

From l to r: Ainjar Mayor Vartges Khoshian; Governor of Bekaa Valley Kamal Abu; Lebanon Honorary Consul to Fresno Harry Nadjarian; Parliament Member Hagop Pakradouni; Lebanon’s Consul General to Los Angeles Mirna Khawly; Bourdj Hammoud Mayor Mardig Boghossian; Lebanon’s Ambassador to Argentina, Johnny Ibrahim

The same day Nadjarian hosted a delegation representing the Armenian community of Lebanon comprised of Parliament Member Hagop Pakradouni, Bourdj Hammoud Mayor Mardig Boghossian and Ainjar Mayor Vartges Khoshian, who were presented with the plans for the Fresno-Ainjar Sister City program. In addition to Ibrahim, the governor of Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley Kamal Abu and Lebanon’s Consul General to Los Angeles Mirna Khawly were attended the meeting.

Sevak Khachadourian

According to sources, the City of Fresno has already expressed its support for the Sister City program,

To advance the project, Nadjarian has reached out to long-time Los Angeles community activist Sevak Khachadourian for him to lead and assemble a committee of well-known Fresno leaders. Khachadourian has accepted Nadjarian’s invitation and has already begun fielding candidates to serve on the body.

Is ‘Chernobyl’ the greatest TV series ever?

The National, UAE
Monday
Is 'Chernobyl' the greatest TV series ever?
by Chris Newbould

What we make of the HBO/Sky docudrama that has taken IMDB by storm, and where to watch it in the UAE

A still taken from season one of 'Chernobyl'. Courtesy OSN

Did you say greatest TV series ever? That's quite a claim… I did. Well, technically, I Didn't, but the millions of readers of cinephile website IMDB did. The show shot straight to the top of the website's, user-voted, list of the greatest TV shows ever last week, before it had even finished its five-episode run on HBO in the US, and Sky Atlantic in the UK. That puts it above Breaking Bad (#5), Game of Thrones (#6) and Black Mirror (a disappointing #32). That's quite an impressive feat, and you don't need to take it from me – that's democracy speaking.

OK, sounds good. So what's it about?

Well, stop me if you've heard this one before as the story is already in the public realm, but on April 26, 1986, Reactor Four of the Vladimir Ilyich Lenin nuclear power plant in the city of Pripyet, Ukraine, better known as Chernobyl, suffered a disastrous explosion that led to a meltdown of the facility's core and, in a nutshell, the world's worst nuclear disaster to date. There was a period when it looked like most of Europe could become uninhabitable for 24,000 years or so, so it wasn't pretty. The miniseries tells the story, and the story of those who worked to avert a worse catastrophe than the then-Soviet Union already had on its hands.

It doesn't sound very cheerful?

No, you've got me there. The show is retelling an apocalyptic story, made worse by the efforts of the Soviet Union to cover up the events, the fact that none of the scientists involved really knew what to do as this had simply never happened before, and the political machinations to shift blame while, quite simply, people were dying horrible deaths. Oh, and the fact that the whole incident could essentially be put down to cost-cutting in the manufacture of Soviet fuel rods.

As many as 93,000 people died, according to international NGOs, although that doesn't take into account the raised rates of cancer and birth defects that persist in parts of Ukraine and neighbouring Belorussia to this day.

The Soviet government's official death toll was 31. It's not the Teletubbies.

It can't be that bleak can it?

It can I'm afraid. We're talking rotting human bodies being desperately interviewed in makeshift hospital beds to try and find out what went wrong before they shuffle off this mortal coil, civilians being drafted in to cull the local population of contaminated domestic pets before they can roam around and spread radiation poisoning, lead coffins being buried in super-deep graves then covered with concrete, the lot.

A still taken from season one of 'Chernobyl'. Courtesy OSN

Sample moment of levity: On realising that a door inside the reactor needs to be manually opened to avert an even worse catastrophe, Jared Harris' nuclear physicist Valery Legasov to General Secretary Gorbachev: "I'm asking for permission to kill three men."

There's not a lot of slapstick.

But there are some light-hearted moments, right?

Err, not really. I recall one joke in the six-hour marathon, when the clean-up team draft in a lunar rover to try and clear the radioactive debris from the reactor's roof.

"So that's what we put on the moon," says Stellan Skarsgard's Deputy for Energy. "Well, not that one," retorts Jared Harris' nuclear physicist, as the control room erupts in laughter and party poppers are let off.

Lebanese actor Fares Fares also puts in a solid shift channelling Kevin Smith's Silent Bob as he spends an entire 60-plus minute appearance as a silent Armenian soldier who speaks just once to deliver a single line of high philosophical worth before reverting to silence, but you'd have to be a total geek to even spot that moment of pseudo-levity.

So it's totally depressing then?

Actually, no. The series does a great job of telling the stories we don't know of simple bravery and heroism. The miners who worked naked, 24-hours a day, under a burning nuclear disaster, to tunnel under the reactor and implant the Soviet Union's entire stock of liquid nitrogen as a heat exchanger to prevent the radiation melting down to the water table and infecting all of Eastern Europe's water supplies. The three previously mentioned heroes who waded through radioactive water to open the door that would drain sluice tanks to prevent a further escalation (two of whom, amazingly, survive today). On a macro level, it's dark. On a human level, maybe there's hope for us all yet.

This doesn't sound like the USSR comes across too well. How's it gone down in Russia?

Well, that would depend who you ask. It's gone down remarkably well with audiences.

Although Chernobyl hasn't been screened on terrestrial TV, it's been legally streamed on Amediateka, a kind of Russian Netflix, and garnered a 9.1 rating on Kinopoisk, the Russian equivalent of IMDB.

Officialdom has been less welcoming however, to the degree that NTV, a state-owned channel that is a division of Gazprom's media arm, has announced it is releasing its own show to counter Chernobyl's story. This version of events will show us how the CIA were responsible for the events that took place in 1986, apparently, and is currently in post-production with the help of a half million dollar grant from the Russian ministry of culture.

Ok, you convinced me. But can I watch it in the UAE?

Yes, you can. As of June 3, Chernobyl is airing weekly every Monday at 10pm (UAE) exclusively on OSN Series First. If you missed the first episode because OSN seems to have been quiet about airing the show, you can catch-up on OSN Play. Episode two will air tonight, June 10, at 10pm.

What are ‘anti-Soros people’ trying to say?

Aravot, Armenia
June 5 2019

What are 'anti-Soros people' trying to say?
 by Aram Abrahamyan
[Armenian News note: the below is translated from the Russian edition of Aravot]
I have heard talk about "Western conspiracies" since long ago. Back in 1996, the [Armenian] government were sure that the special services of a number of countries were trying to destabilise the situation and worsen our relations with Russia through Vazgen Manukyan [opposition candidate in the 1996 presidential election] and the NDU [National Democratic Union led by Manukyan]. Later, "Western conspirators" were called "Sorosovtsy [followers of George Soros], implying not only the Open Society Institute, but also any other organisation emerging "from that side" for the purpose of destroying our nation.

However, what is my vision of the real situation? Of course, the West is working in Armenia in its own interests. At the same time, the term "West" has multiple layers. The interests of the USA and EU in our country may fail to fully coincide. Moreover, France and, say, Poland also seem to be pursuing various objectives in Armenia. The Soros Foundation and others also pursue the interests of certain circles in the West. It would be extremely naive to think that any country or organisation acts purely on the basis of altruism in specific issues. It is not ruled out that weakening Russia's influence in the South Caucasus may be one of their purposes.

However, Russia is also working in our country. Of course, it is doing this in its own manner, resorting to more uncouth and not so transparent methods, but it is working in compliance with its own interests.

We must admit that all this is no sensation and it is not the case of efforts of various centres being exposed in 2018. However, why did "anti-Soros" sentiments rise precisely now?

If those, who have such sentiments, want to say that the revolution last year was organised by Soros' followers, this is a blatant lie. Dissatisfaction with the previous government was enormous and no external interference was necessary to stir it up.

If they are trying to say that many incumbent MPs and officials used to have connections with these foundations, this will be true and quite natural too: People wanted to be involved in public activities and be active as citizens without becoming "young Republicans" or "hawks".

If those "opposed to Soros" want to say that some officials and MPs have been "brainwashed" in Western educational centres and foundations, there is some truth in this. However, in that case, it is necessary to specify what these ideas are.

If they imply fair elections, freedom of speech, and political pluralism, I personally support these ideas irrespective of any "Soroses". There are people, who are against these ideas, but they will never admit this.

This is why they are searching for some conspiracies.

17:31,

YEREVAN, MAY 26, ARMENPRESS. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan received on May 26th China’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and State Councilor Wang Yi.

Pashinyan welcomed Yi in Armenia and warmly recalled his recent visit to China.

“I had very productive and good meetings with China’s President, Prime Minister and Chinese businessmen, and I am happy that as a result of our discussions we reached concrete agreements in the direction of developing mutually beneficial cooperation. Once again thank you for the invitation to participate in the Dialogue of Asian Civilizations Conference. This initiative has important significance in terms of strengthening cooperation, mutual trust between peoples and global stability. I would also like to emphasize that the Armenian and Chinese nations are united by firm human relations and warm hospitality,” Pashinyan said at the meeting.

Wang Yi thanked the Armenian Premier for the reception and participation in the Dialogue of Asian Civilizations Conference. He noted that China attaches importance to strengthening dialogue, developing mutually beneficial partnership and that Pashinyan’s meetings with China’s top leadership in Beijing and subsequent agreements once more emphasized the importance that both sides attach to the Armenian-Chinese relations and their continuous enhancement and strengthening.

The Chinese FM noted that since the establishment of diplomatic relations the cooperation between Armenia and China is developing effectively, based on the two people’s mutual respect and friendship.

“We’re ready and set to deepen mutually beneficial partnership with Armenia, under your leadership,” Yi said.

PM Pashinyan said that the recent frequent high-level official mutual visits and meetings prove the positive dynamics of the Armenian-Chinese relations’ development, which the Armenian society is treating very well. Pashinyan attached importance to the visa waiver that was signed on May 26 between Armenia and China, which in his words will contribute to the development of not only humanitarian, but also business ties, and attraction of investments. In this context, the Armenian Premier also offered to consider prospects of establishing direct air communication.

The sides discussed issues concerning the enhancement of ties in a number of sectors within the framework of the reached bilateral agreements. Particularly, they discussed the possibilities for developing cooperation in road construction, infrastructure, IT, machinery, and enhancement of export markets for businesses and implementation of investment programs.

Both sides attached importance to cooperation in the construction of the North-South Highway. Pashinyan said the Armenian Government views the project to be not only a road infrastructure development program, but an opportunity of forming a communication corridor which can be an important ring in the context of the One Belt One Road initiative.

Wang Yi noted that China is interested in participating in the construction of the North-South Highway, given the project’s importance both for One Belt One Road initiative, as well as ensuring regional development and stability.

Pashinyan said that the Government of Armenia is taking steps to boost technological industry, and in this context is interested in deepening cooperation in the IT sector as well. The Armenian PM invited Chinese companies to participate in the upcoming Yerevan World Congress of Information Technologies (WCIT), which will take place October 6-9.

The Chinese FM noted that the high-tech sector is developing rapidly in his country, and being familiar with Armenia’s potential in this sector they are ready to discuss prospects of exchange of experience and development of partnership.

Yi thanked for the invitation to participate in the WCIT and noted that China will consider the level and opportunities of participation.

Nikol Pashinyan and Wang Yi also exchanged ideas over global and regional security challenges and attached importance to cooperation in the direction of strengthening global and regional stability.

Pashinyan expressed gratitude to Yi for China’s balanced stance over the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.

Gegharkunik Province is one of the most interesting regions of Armenia. Famous blogger Alexander Lapshin on Saturday noted this at the business forum which is held in the Gegharkunik provincial capital of Gavar city.

“Due to the existence of [Lake] Sevan as well as historical, spiritual and cultural monuments, the potential of the province is great,” he said, in particular.

Lapshin has been in Gegharkunik for two days already, and he is exploring the opportunities which this province has to offer.

In late 2016, Israeli, Russian, and Ukrainian citizen and blogger Alexander Lapshin was detained in Belarus, and based on his international arrest warrant by Azerbaijan. Baku had “blacklisted” him for visiting Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) without getting Azerbaijan’s “consent.”

Subsequently, Belarus extradited Lapshin to Azerbaijan, and a court in capital city Baku sentenced him to three years in prison.

But on September 11, 2017 Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on granting pardon to this blogger.

Lapshin left Azerbaijan on September 14 and went to Israel.

It turned out, however, that Alexander Lapshin had been close to committing suicide in the Baku prison.
