What RPA actually put into Pashinyan’s pocket?

Panorama
Armenia – July 2 2022

No matter how much Nikol Pashinyan’s teammates claim that the former authorities handed over Artsakh’s territories and “slipped it into this poor man’s pocket”, they deny it with their own statements and deeds.

An ardent love for the Turks, a long-cherished dream to make our roads serve Turkey a little bit… persistent efforts to that end and a confession that whether the incompetent commander had gone to war with Azerbaijan or not, he would have lost it anyway. Simply. this is how he lost, leaving 5,000 victims, 10,000 disabled, 25 percent of Artsakh, tattered and weak borders of Armenia, incompetent foreign policy and spineless image to us.

I'm not going to list them all, since only a weak-minded man would not realize that is happening.

And the current government has done and continues to do everything possible to make society worse than itself and thus worthy of it.

And the fact that in no way, not through the Constitutional Court, the National Assembly, by shaming or invoking their conscience… is it possible to oust the current regime, the former authorities are to blame for. The latter’s fault lies in the fact that they created or made possible such a system of government, which is in no way under the control of society.

The most trivial thing is the parliament where the ruling majority has a say and government controlled by the majority. This is what the RPA (former ruling Republican Party of Armenia) put into Pashinyan's pocket as a gift. The rest is a consequence of that system.

Food: America’s Test Kitchen: Lahmajun (Armenian Flatbread) (Ep 2214)

Lahmajun (Armenian Flatbread)

SERVES 4 TO 6

TIME 1 HOUR, PLUS 17 HOURS RESTING

You’ll need a baking peel for this recipe; if you don’t have one, use an over- turned rimmed baking sheet instead. King Arthur All-Purpose Flour gives these flatbreads the perfect balance of crispness and tenderness, but if it’s unavailable, substitute any major brand of all-purpose flour. We strongly recommend weighing the flour and the water. Jarred biber salçası (Turkish red pepper paste) can be found in Middle Eastern grocery stores or online. Be sure to use the mild variety; if it’s unavailable, increase the tomato paste in the topping to 2 tablespoons and increase the paprika to 4 teaspoons. Eighty-five percent lean ground beef can be substituted for the lamb, if desired. Eat the lahmajun out of hand, either whole, cut into halves or quarters, folded in half, or rolled into a cylinder. If desired, omit the lemon wedges and serve with Cucumber-Tomato Salad (recipe follows). If serving with the salad, use a slotted spoon to distribute 1 cup of salad evenly along the center third of each lahmajun. Fold the outer thirds of the lahmajun over the filling, one side at a time. Turn the rolled lahmajun seam side down and cut in half crosswise.

Ingredients

DOUGH:

3 ¼    cups (16 ¼ ounces) King Arthur All-Purpose Flour

⅛    teaspoon instant or rapid-rise yeast

1 ¼ cups (10 ounces) ice water

1    tablespoon vegetable oil

1 ½ teaspoons table salt

Vegetable oil spray

TOPPING:

1 red bell pepper, stemmed, seeded, and cut into 1-inch pieces

¼   small onion

¼    cup fresh parsley leaves and tender stems

2 tablespoons mild biber salcasi

1      tablespoon tomato paste

1    garlic clove, peeled

1      teaspoon ground allspice

1     teaspoon paprika

½    teaspoon ground cumin

½    teaspoon table salt

⅛    teaspoon pepper

⅛     teaspoon cayenne pepper

6 ounces ground lamb, broken into small pieces

Lemon wedges

1. FOR THE DOUGH: Process flour and yeast in food processor until combined, about 2 seconds. With processor running, slowly add ice water; process until dough is just combined and no dry flour remains, about 10 seconds. Let dough rest for 10 minutes.

2. Add oil and salt and process until dough forms shaggy ball, 30 to 60 seconds. Transfer dough to lightly oiled counter and knead until uniform, about 1 minute (texture will remain slightly rough). Divide dough into 4 equal pieces, about 6 ⅔ ounces each. Shape dough pieces into tight balls and transfer, seam side down, to rimmed baking sheet coated with oil spray. Spray tops of balls lightly with oil spray. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 16 hours or up to 2 days.

3. FOR THE TOPPING: In now-empty processor, process bell pepper, onion, parsley, biber salçası, tomato paste, garlic, allspice, paprika, cumin, salt, pepper, and cayenne until smooth, scraping down sides of bowl as needed, about 15 seconds. Add lamb and pulse to combine, 8 to 10 pulses. Transfer to container, cover, and refrigerate until needed (topping can be refrigerated for up to 24 hours).

4. One hour before baking lahmajun, remove dough from refrigerator and let stand at room temperature until slightly puffy and no longer cool to touch. Meanwhile, adjust oven rack to upper-middle position (rack should be 4 to 5 inches from broiler element), set baking stone on rack, and heat oven to 500 degrees.

5. Place 1 dough ball on unfloured counter and dust top lightly with flour. Using heel of your hand, press dough ball into 5-inch disk. Using rolling pin, gently roll into 12-inch round of even thickness. (Use tackiness of dough on counter to aid with rolling; if dough becomes misshapen, periodically peel round from counter, reposition, and continue to roll.) Dust top of round lightly but evenly with flour and, starting at 1 edge, peel dough off counter and f lip, floured side down, onto floured baking peel (dough will spring back to about 11 inches in diameter). Place one-quarter of topping (about ½ cup) in center of dough. Cover dough with 12 by 12-inch sheet of plastic and, using your fingertips and knuckles, gently spread filling evenly across dough, leaving ⅛ -inch border. Starting at 1 edge, peel away plastic, leaving topping in place (reserve plastic for topping remaining lahmajun).

6. Carefully slide lahmajun onto stone and bake until bottom crust is browned, edges are lightly browned, and topping is steaming, 4 to 6 minutes. While lahmajun bakes, begin rolling next dough ball.

7. Transfer baked lahmajun to wire rack. Repeat rolling, topping, and baking remaining 3 dough balls.

8. Serve with lemon wedges.

PRESS RELEASE – AUA Alumna Karine Sarkissian (MBA ‘93) Appointed CEO of Insurance Foundation for Servicemen

PRESS RELEASE
AUA Alumna Karine Sarkissian (MBA ‘93) Appointed CEO of Insurance Foundation for Servicemen

YEREVAN, Armenia — Karine Sarkissian (MBA ‘93), one of our cherished alumni from the American University of Armenia’s (AUA) first graduating class of 1993, was recently hired as Chief Executive Officer of the Insurance Foundation for Servicemen, commonly known as the 1000plus.am organization. An accomplished alumna, Sarkissian has enjoyed a rich career filled with notable milestones, all of which she proudly attributes to her AUA education.

Born in Yerevan, Armenia, Sarkissian is proud of her upbringing in her homeland, a place from which she can’t envision being far from, saying, “I am an Armenian from Armenia, and I will always be here.” Raised and educated in a Soviet society, she recalls being one of many who dreamt of traveling to the United States to explore the western lifestyle, culture, education, and work opportunities. After the collapse of the USSR, freedom and autonomy of decision-making were granted to citizens and many constraints were lifted. Soon after, AUA was founded, and Sarkissian was granted the opportunity to join the first cohort of graduates.

Speaking about her experiences at AUA in those early years, Sarkissian recalls admiring the faculty and appreciating the totally different educational style at the University, which she credits for shaping her as a professional. “The whole class [of 1993] demonstrated a great passion for learning and felt privileged to be studying in the American education system, which also came with its own challenges as it was totally new to us,” she says. After obtaining her MBA in 1993, she continued her studies in management at Northwestern University in Illinois as a recipient of the Edmund S. Muskie Scholarship Program, graduating in 1995 and returning back home to Armenia.

Since then, Sarkissian has held key leadership positions with reputable companies in both the private and public sectors, including Johnson & Johnson; the Coca-Cola Company; the United Nations; the Austrian Development Agency; and the American Chamber of Commerce in Armenia. In her most recent appointment as CEO of the Insurance Foundation for Servicemen — established to provide compensation for the well-being of fallen, missing, and disabled Armenian soldiers and their families — she feels greatly honored and a strong sense of responsibility. “We all owe a debt of gratitude to war victims and their families who sacrificed their lives for our country, and we will do our best to support them financially, as well as connect them with the proper resources so they may prosper and thrive,” she says.

As Armenia continues to recover and grow in a post-war and post-pandemic society, Sarkissian acknowledges the critical role education will play in Armenia’s economic growth and advancement. Noting AUA’s 30th anniversary, Sarkissian reiterates the University’s tremendous contributions in setting and maintaining the highest standards of quality and globally competitive education, saying, “AUA plays a flagship role as a model for other educational institutions to replicate. AUA has successfully generated thousands of graduates who have impacted and will continue to impact Armenia. With a highly educated generation, we can build a better society and a powerful and globally competitive Armenian nation.”

As a successful alumna, Sarkissian imparts sound advice to current and future AUA students and graduates, emphasizing the importance of clearly drawing their career objectives early on and working toward achieving them through volunteer or internship opportunities available to them as soon as possible. “Today’s job market is very dynamic. One needs to be in a continuous learning mode to develop the soft and technical skills necessary to stay competitive in the workplace and benefit one’s personal life,” she comments, reminding everyone to “be a proud graduate of AUA, the leading educational institution in Armenia.”

Founded in 1991, the American University of Armenia (AUA) is a private, independent university located in Yerevan, Armenia, affiliated with the University of California, and accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission in the United States. AUA provides local and international students with Western-style education through top-quality undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programs, promotes research and innovation, encourages civic engagement and community service, and fosters democratic values.

Opposition in Armenia reacts to Vanetsyan’s resignation

PanARMENIAN
Armenia – June 21 2022

PanARMENIAN.Net - Ex-lawmaker Armen Ashotyan from the former ruling Republican Party of Armenia has said that they share the same strategic goals with the opposition forces, but the parties, including the RPA, can come up with different tactical solutions.

Ashotyan's remarks came after MP from the "I Have Honor", Chairman of Homeland party Artur Vanetsyan has resigned on Tuesday, June 21.

"I respect the decision of Arthur Vanetsyan and the "Homeland" party," Ashotyan said. "For us, too, parliamentary mandates have never been and are not an end in themselves."

Ishkhan Saghatelyan, the Deputy Speaker of parliament and member of the opposition Armenia bloc, weighed in on Vanetsyan's decision and said that everyone decides their own political line.

"We have one goal, and everyone has their own roadmap to achieve that goal," he said.

Vanetsyan went on a sit-in in mid-April and launched a campaign against Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and his government, which was later joined by other opposition parties. Pashinian came under fire after he and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev agreed to start drafting a bilateral peace treaty to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and set up a joint commission on demarcating the borders.

YEREVAN, JUNE 21, ARMENPRESS. Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan addressed a congratulatory message on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the formation of the Police Troops, the PM’s Office said.

The message reads:

“Congratulations to all of us, in particular, the Command of the Police Troops of the Republic of Armenia and the entire staff, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the formation of the Police Troops.

The Police Troops are the same age as our Republic. Formed in the difficult 90's, the Police Troops were baptized in the military sense on the battlefield, at the same time maintaining public order and security of citizens, struggling on daily basis against crime.

The Police Troops of the Republic of Armenia have always been by the side of the Armed Forces, protecting the homeland’s borders together with the servicemen from any encroachment.

An evidence of this was the 44-day war in 2020, when the Troops, together with the army and police units, were crowned with glory.

Unfortunately, on this glorious path, the Police Troops have also suffered valuable and irreversible losses, devotees who sacrificed their lives for the Motherland without hesitation.

Glory to the bright memory of our fallen servicemen!

Deep homage to the parents of the immortal heroes for giving such children to the country.

Today, the Police Troops celebrate the anniversary of their formation with great merit and full right, and I once again congratulate the Command staff and the servicemen, wishishing them new achievements during their service, peace in everyone’s homes.

Trouble-free service to all of you”.

Tigran Ulikhanyan quits Armenia’s ruling party

Panorama
Armenia –

Former MP Tigran Ulikhanyan is leaving Armenia’s ruling Civil Contract party, he said in a statement on Friday.

The application to cancel his party membership was submitted to Chairman of the Civil Contract Board Suren Papikyan on June 7.

“I made the decision back on May 4, but I did not submit the relevant documents at the time so that my step would not be linked to the well-known internal political processes,” Ulikhanyan said, referring to the opposition protests.

Speaking about the reasons for his decision, the former lawmaker noted that people set up parties or join them to achieve certain political goals and aspirations.

"I have to state that the Civil Contract party has ceased to meet my political aspirations," Ulikhanyan said, adding that he will look for new platforms to achieve them.

Also, he thanked Civil Contract members for cooperation.

What did Assistant Secretary of State Karen Donfried come to the region with?

ARMINFO
Armenia –
Marianna Mkrtchyan

ArmInfo. U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Asian Affairs Karen Donfried, who visited Baku on June 15-16, briefed a group of journalists Thursday  evening, Turan reports.

In her opening remarks and during her answers to questions, she  limited the range of topics. These included issues of regional  security and cooperation, the war in Ukraine, and Azerbaijan's role  and importance in these processes.

As opposed to other high-ranking U.S. diplomats, Donfried lectured  rather than responded to the questions posed. She tried to use  general phrases, avoiding specifics.

Reporting about the fruitful meeting with President Ilham Aliyev, she  did not disclose its content. When asked by Turan whether she had  discussed facts of violations of freedoms and human rights, Donfried  avoided giving a clear answer as saying that fundamental freedoms are  a priority for the US.

There have been recent threats from various Russian political circles  against Azerbaijan, including a call for a nuclear strike against its  oil infrastructure. Will the U.S. be ready to help Azerbaijan in case  of such aggression? This was also met with an evasive response, the  essence of which was that the aggression against Ukraine was  unprovoked, it was terrible, and Azerbaijan was right to provide  moral and humanitarian support to Kiev.

Asked about prospects of the Karabakh settlement and the development  of energy cooperation between Azerbaijan and the West, she voiced an  appeal for peaceful coexistence and the Azerbaijan's large role in  the energy security of Europe and the region.

Summing up the meeting results, it can be concluded that the purpose  of the regional visit of Karen Donfried is much wider than the raised  issues, and the message that Washington wants to convey to the  countries of the South Caucasus is as follows

1) It is obvious for the South Caucasus countries that the prospects  for their well-being and sovereignty largely depend on the resolution  of local conflicts and above all in Karabakh. In this case, the West  should not be excluded as mediators.

2) In this case, one can count on collective and effective assistance  from the West.

3) The Biden administration has become more active in the South  Caucasus region, and regular visits of senior Washington officials,  personal communication between Secretary Blinken and the leaders of  the three countries, and messages from President Biden himself bear  witness to this.

4) Facts of violations of human rights and freedoms, while remaining  a priority, take a back seat to this case, and will not be the  subject of pressure from Washington.

5) The U.S. intends to prevent Ukraine's defeat, and seeks to  maximize the coalition of countries in support of Kiev.

Another important conclusion is that, in contrast to the Trump  administration, the current U.S. leadership does not want to let the  situation in the South Caucasus go unchecked.

For official Baku, this is a favorable outcome, as it allows a  balance between Moscow and Washington.  However, improving relations  with the U.S. would require an improvement in democracy and a softer  stance on the Karabakh issue.
