The agreement was signed by Iran’s Industry Minister Alireza Razm Hosseini and Armenia’s Economy Minister Vahan Kerobyan on Saturday.

In remarks at the event, the Iranian minister said the agreement is going to boost commercial exchanges between the two countries, noting that the value of Iranian exports to Armenia stand at around $300 million at present.

"Armenia is a Eurasian country and we have a positive attitude towards trade with Eurasia," Razm Hosseini said, stressing the need for continued negotiations to allow Iran to join the Eurasian Economic Union.

There are suitable grounds for trade cooperation between Iran and Armenia in various fields, such as mining industry, foodstuff trade, and home appliances, IRNA quoted him as saying.

For his part, the visiting Armenian minister highlighted Yerevan’s readiness for trade ties with Iran, saying his country offers a big market for the Iranian business people willing to work with the third countries.

In another meeting on Saturday, heads of a number of Iranian and Armenian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) discussed the ways to establish of a technology exchange center.

Earlier in January, a marketing official at the Trade Promotion Organization of Iran said Armenia is willing to import over 2,000 items from Iran after announcing bans on imports from Turkey.

He said Armenia has plans to replace 2,250 Turkish items with products made in Iran, describing it as an opportunity for Iranian companies.

On December 31, 2020, a ban on the goods imported from Turkey took effect in Armenia. The Armenian government announced the ban in late October following Turkey’s heavy backing of the Republic Azerbaijan in the recent war in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

The ban would be in effect for only six months, as that is the maximum period that member states of the Eurasian Economic Union can implement unilateral embargos of this type.

YEREVAN, JANUARY 19, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian National Committee of Cyprus thanked the Mayor and the Council of Elders of Paphos, who, responding to the request of the Armenian community of the country, quickly changed the name of Talaat Pasha Street into Tikeosinis (Justice), "Armenpress" was informed from the Armenian National Committee of Cyprus.

"Our Committee, for the first time, examined the issue of changing the street's name during its July 14, 2020 session, where it considered humiliating that the name of the organizer of the Armenian Genocide was honored.

Moreover, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, the Cypriot Parliament ratified a bill criminalizing the denial of the Genocide. This decision brought the circumstance of honoring the genocide organizer to the legal platform. Today, we are happy to announce that the wish of all of us has come true. Our thanks to the Mayor of Paphos Mr. Phedonas Phedonos, who established justice without any hesitation’', reads the statement.

CivilNet: Lavrov: It is not the best time to raise the issue of the status of Karabakh

No problem in Armenia’s officials visiting Karabakh

“No one has ever denied the connection between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh,” said Lavrov responding to an Azerbaijani journalist’s question about Armenia’s foreign minister’s visit to Karabakh.

In early January, Armenian Foreign Minister Ara Ayvazyan visited Stepanakert. This was his first visit to Karabakh after his appointment on November 18, 2020. "These visits must be stopped. If such provocative steps are taken, we warn that Armenia will regret it even more," read a statement by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

Lavrov said that "In all the agreements, first of all, in the November 9 statement, the parties agreed that there will be a link between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh along the Lachin corridor, which will be under the control of Russian peacekeepers.”

“No one has ever denied Armenia's connection with Nagorno-Karabakh. During the decades of negotiations, the issue of cutting off Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh from each other was never discussed. And that is why the Lachin Corridor, as a concept, was not rejected by anyone. And this is still the agreement between the parties, in particular, it is subject to the consent of our Azerbaijani neighbors,” he said.

According to Lavrov, there should be a link between the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh and the Armenians of Armenia. “I see no reason to prevent contacts at this level. Armenian officials are involved in the process of providing humanitarian assistance to Nagorno-Karabakh, which does not cause any negative reaction in Baku, and it would be strange if it were otherwise. The fact that these Armenian officials make rather politicized statements in Nagorno Karabakh, perhaps, causes tension, and it would be better to avoid it,” he said.

“Before the 44-day war, we were eyewitnesses of […] emotional statements… new war-new territories, etc,” Lavrov said referring to Armenia’s former Defense Minister Davit Tonoyan’s doctrine that if Azerbaijan started a new war, it would lose new territories.

Status of Nagorno Karabakh

Lavrov said that Russia pays great attention to the contacts between the leaderships of Armenia and Azerbaijan, and the formation of an atmosphere of trust. “That is why now is not the best time to raise the issue of the status of Nagorno-Karabakh as a priority issue. It remains for the future," Lavrov said.

Lavrov highlighted that the status of Karabakh was consciously not mentioned in the November 9 statement. “This issue is left to the future. This should be dealt, in particular, by the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs. They have now resumed their contacts with all parties. They are preparing to visit the region. The issue of the status of Karabakh will be easier to solve if all the assurances from Yerevan and Baku are made on the ground that the main task is to regulate the daily life of all ethnic and religious communities in Karabakh, and it is necessary to restore their peaceful and good-neighborly coexistence,” he said.

The issue of POWs

The issue of prisoners of war is indeed being discussed, it is part of the November 9 statement on ending the Karabakh war, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at his annual press conference. He said that this issue was discussed in telephone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Nikol Pashinyan and Ilham Aliyev, after the signing of the trilateral statement.

He reminded that the issue of exchanging prisoners of war was also discussed during the recent Pashinyan-Putin-Aliyev trilateral meeting in Moscow on January 11.

"At the trilateral meeting held in Moscow on January 11, this issue was discussed for quite a long time. Initially, the following task was set in this issue, that the Armenian and Azerbaijani sides would draw up lists of missing persons whom they want to bring out of captivity. Azerbaijan submitted such a list, the number was insignificant. All of them were returned. After that, the Azerbaijani side did not submit lists of missing persons, prisoners of war or other persons,” Lavrov said, adding that the Armenian side submitted these lists ''not all at once and not in full.”

According to Lavrov, an exchange of POWs during the war has already taken place, which was envisaged by the November 9 joint statement.

"We are already discussing the problem that arose in the Hadrut region in early December, when a large group of Armenian soldiers, which was sent there, was captured. The Azerbaijani side states that these people were sent there after the announcement of the truce, their issue should be considered separately, and not within the framework regulated by the November 9 statement,” he said.

The Russian Foreign Minister noted that this issue is still being raised, and it needs to be resolved, guided by the principle of “everyone in exchange for everyone.” “I spoke with the Armenian foreign minister to be informed about the number of these people. It turned out that their number is more than 62. Now our military is dealing with this issue, cooperating with the military of Armenia and Azerbaijan to clarify the names of the missing persons,” Lavrov said.

Russia urges international organizations to work in Karabakh

We want other international organizations, including UNESCO and the UNHCR, to work there in addition to the ICRC. “Now they are coordinating with Yerevan and Baku on the issue of their assessment missions related to the status of Karabakh,” he said.

The only international organization working in Nagorno Karabakh is the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Lavrov calls the inclusion of Karabakh in Russia “exotic”

Lavrov called the statements about the inclusion of Karabakh in Russia as “exotic”. "No one, including Armenia, has recognized the independence of Karabakh. The thought hasn’t even crossed our minds. We believe that all issues should be resolved by the countries of the region, in this case – Armenia and Azerbaijan. We will contribute to those efforts that will be aimed at strengthening security and peace in the region,” he said.

Nagorno-Karabakh: Putin hosts talks between Armenia, Azerbaijan leaders

WION News, India
Jan 12 2021

WION Web Team
Russian leader Vladimir Putin on Monday hosted talks with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azeri President Ilham Aliyev to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

A Russian-brokered ceasefire agreement in November halted the six-week conflict between Azeri and ethnic Armenian forces, locking in territorial gains for Azerbaijan.

But tensions persist, with low-level sporadic violence, prisoners of war still held by both sides, and ambiguity about how a prospective transport corridor through the region will work.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan insisted Monday that key issues surrounding the conflict were in limbo and needed to be resolved immediately.

"Unfortunately, this conflict is still not settled," he told journalists after talks in the Kremlin that lasted nearly four hours.

Clashes over the mountainous region broke out in late September, reigniting fighting over the territory controlled for three decades by Armenia-backed separatists.

More than 6,000 people, including civilians, were killed before a Moscow-brokered peace agreement that saw Armenia cede swathes of territory it had controlled for decades to Azerbaijan.

Pashinyan said several issues remained unresolved including the question of the future status of Karabakh, an ethnic Armenian enclave recognised internationally as part of Azerbaijan.

He also said that the meeting did not render a solution to the "most sensitive and painful question" of prisoners of war.

Armenia and Azerbaijan exchanged their first prisoners in early December, more than a month after the peace deal was signed.

However, it remains unclear how many more prisoners the two sides intend to exchange.

Joint working group

Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev, whose better-equipped army secured a victory, said on Monday that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict "remained in the past".

The three leaders issued a joint statement on the Kremlin website announcing the creation of a trilateral working group to oversee the "unblocking of all economic and transport links" in the region.

The group will be jointly chaired by deputy prime ministers from the three countries and will hold its first meeting before January 30, the statement said.

At the start of the meeting, Putin thanked the two leaders for their cooperation with Russia's mediation efforts aimed at "stopping the bloodshed, stabilising the situation and achieving a sustainable ceasefire".

Putin said over 48,000 people who fled Karabakh when the recent fighting broke out had returned since the peace deal came into force.

As part of the ceasefire agreement, Moscow deployed nearly 2,000 peacekeeping troops in the region. They will remain there for at least five years.

Russia has also set up a joint monitoring centre with Azerbaijan's ally Turkey to oversee the implementation of the ceasefire agreements.

The United States, France and Russia co-chair the so-called Minsk Group of negotiators that for years led talks on the Karabakh conflict but failed to achieve a lasting ceasefire.

Armenian separatists gained control of Karabakh following a post-Soviet war in the 1990s which left around 30,000 dead and displaced many Azerbaijanis.

Nagorno-Karabakh proclaimed its independence from Baku but its autonomy has not been recognised internationally, not even by Armenia.

Kebab chef slammed for hosting BBQ in 19th-century Armenian church in Turkey

Public Radio of Armenia

– Public Radio of Armenia

A kebab chef was criticized for hosting a barbecue in an ancient church in southeastern Turkey. The 19th-century structure has been abandoned after treasure hunters ransacked it, locals reported.

A kebab chef in southeast Turkey enraged eyewitnesses after he hosted a barbecue inside of an abandoned church in southeast Turkey’s Şanlıurfa district on Jan. 14, Duvar English reports.

Dating back to the 19th century and located about 10 kilometers from the nearest settlement, the Germuş Armenian Church has become a spot for squatters since its abandonment, one local noted.

“Treasure hunters destroyed this place. Now, people come here to drink, or grill kebabs,” Dağyanı Neighborhood resident Übeyit İnci said, urging the state to swiftly restore the ancient structure.

Pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Deputy Garo Paylan also slammed the chef’s abuse of the ruins in a tweet.

“I don’t know what to say, shame!” Paylan said.

One local responded to Paylan’s tweet with more photos of the structure, adding that they’ve been trying to rally public support to save the church to no avail, and that it has essentially been left to rot.

Ancient churches across Turkey have been condemned to similar fates as minority populations dwindle across the country after the foundation of the republic in 1923.

More than 3,000 Armenian soldiers killed in Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, health ministry confirms

Morning Star, UK
Jan 4 2021

MORE than 3,000 Armenian soldiers were killed during the war with Azerbaijan over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh territory, according to Health Ministry spokeswoman Alina Nikogossian on Saturday.

Forensic medical teams had examined 3,300 corpses of soldiers to determine their identities, she said with 436 identified in the past 10 days.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has faced a public backlash and calls for him to resign after conceding large amounts of territory as part of a ceasefire agreement brokered by Russia in November.

Azeri forces were accused of war crimes including the use of banned cluster munitions on civilian populations in the regional capital Stepanakert.

Its soldiers were accused of a number of sickening beheadings with footage of the incidents circulating on social media.

Armenia announced a six-month ban on Turkish goods yesterday over its support for Azerbaijan during the conflict. Turkey sent soldiers and thousands of jihadists to Nagorno-Karabakh to fight alongside Azeri troops.

The Armenian Ministry of Economy said: “The import ban will not lead to an increase in prices in the country, because Turkish goods are not dominant, as imports from Russia, Belarus, Iran and China can replace them.”

Homeland Salvation Movement Responds to Pashinyan’s Snap Election Move

December 28,  2020

Supporters of Homeland Salvation Movement protest in Yerevan

In response to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s invitation on Friday to all political forces to explore the possibility of holding snap parliamentary elections, the Homeland Salvation Movement, the coalition of 16 opposition forces calling for his resignation, responded by vowing to continue its efforts for his removal and the establishment of a National Accord government that will be tasked with organizing the said elections.

Pashinyan’s move on Friday signaled the prime minister’s refusal of both the Homeland Salvation’s calls, as well as growing number of political, academic and civic organizational circles, as well as President Armen Sarkissian, for the establishment of a national accord administrative body.

Below is a translated text of the Homeland Salvation Movement’s announced issued on Sunday.

Nikol Pashinyan announced his intention to convene consultations with parliamentary and extra-parliamentary forces to hold snap parliamentary elections in 2021.

We are confident that the prime minister’s willingness to hold immediate snap parliamentary elections stems exclusively from the unabated protests by the people generated by the Homeland Salvation Movement, as well as the people’s anger toward the disgraceful defeat in the war.

The collective demand of tens of thousands of our compatriots, the spiritual leaders of the Armenian Apostolic Church, the intelligentsia, the legal community and various segments of the society is the to force Pashinyan to resign, which has forces him to address the snap election agenda.
We can state that this is the first victory of the Homeland Salvation Movement. However, at the moment, this is a fake political agenda aimed at manipulating and diverting public attention from the demand for the prime minister’s resignation.

A prime minister who has not moral or political legitimacy and cannot guarantee a free and fair electoral process. He has cause an unprecedented national schism, betrayed our national interests throughout the capitulating agreement, has endangered the country’s sovereignty by causing the country’s political diplomatic, socio-ecamonic and diplomatic collapse.

As we have previously declared, only an interim government formed following the prime minister’s resignation can make it possible to create an atmosphere of public solidarity in the country, to prevent the loss of statehood through crisis-prevention measures, after which early parliamentary elections will be held.

Our struggle is just, our demands are well-founded.

We will fight to the end for the salvation of the homeland.
