YEREVAN, APRIL 19, ARMENPRESS. Within the framework of the official visit to the Republic of Lithuania, the President of the Republic of Armenia, Vahagn Khachaturyan, along with his counterpart Gitanas Nausėda, participated in the official opening ceremony of the Armenian-Lithuanian business forum, during which the presidents made opening speeches.

ARMENPRESS reports President Vahagn Khachaturyan welcomed all the participants of the Armenian-Lithuanian business forum, expressing gratitude to the Lithuanian side for their support in organizing the event.

"The interest shown by the representatives of various business circles in the forum is really encouraging. At the same time, I must admit that the interest of the Armenian side in participating in the forum was much greater. I am committed to provide all the necessary steps to hold the next business forum in Armenia. As an economist and politician, I would like to note that economy is tight politics, while tight economy is successful business. Therefore, the success of the business is the evidence of the success of both the economy and politics," he said.

The President emphasized that, guided by that logic, from the beginning of the planning of his visit, he wanted to include a business component in the visit, and he is happy that they succeeded in this.

"Greeting all of you once again, I urge you to take this opportunity to identify, consolidate and implement your interest in businesses that are important for both countries and make the best use of this platform kindly provided by the Lithuanian authorities.

I will end my speech with the note that business is not about long-winded speeches, but about actions and results, so I wish you all a fruitful event and assure you that I am ready to support all your ideas and initiatives," concluded Vahagn Khachaturyan.

At the start of the business forum, in the presence of Presidents Vahagn Khachaturyan and Gitanas Nausėda, the Ministers of High-Tech Industry of Armenia and Lithuania signed a cooperation and mutual understanding agreement. Agreements and memorandums were also signed between Armenian and Lithuanian businessmen participating in the conference.

Israeli Press: Opinion: Tehran set to exploit Armenia-Azerbaijan escalation

Iran has the capabilities and motive to turn any conflict with Azerbaijan into a proving ground of military developments which would be used against Israel

Russian aggression in Ukraine has been a proving ground for Iranian weapons manufacturers, but it is not enough for Tehran, which needs to test its drones against Israeli military technologies.

Last week, a routine patrol on the border of Azerbaijan and Armenia led to a firefight between Armenian and Azerbaijani military personnel, which quickly devolved into a battle, with both sides rushing in heavier ordnance. Curiously enough, on the same day, just a few minutes before news of the border conflict had spread, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards-affiliated Telegram channel Sepah Pasdaran published death threats against Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

Moreover, at the same time, Iranian drones took off in the northwestern part of the Islamic Republic to allegedly conduct “reconnaissance missions near the border with Azerbaijan and Armenia,” as if expecting some incident to occur.

Yet, the Iranian military was not the only one to utilize Iranian-made drones. With the incident escalating rapidly, the Armenian side was quick to deploy its own arsenal of Iranian-made UAVs against their opponents, who, in part, operate Israeli-made weapons.

Was this incident truly a simple escalation of border tensions, or was there another entity pulling the strings, with a lot to gain from a potential rematch between Armenia and Azerbaijan?

According to The Wall Street Journal, Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) commander General Esmail Qaani met with the leaders of Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Gaza’s Hamas in recent weeks to coordinate strikes against Israel. The two terror organizations are known recipients of Iranian arms. However, with the latest flare-up between Armenia and Azerbaijan, there seemed to be another step in the preparations of Tehran to annihilate the Jewish state.

Days after the border flare-up, the Iranian army released an official statement claiming that the countdown to Israel’s destruction has begun. Following up on the IRGC’s modus operandi, to destroy Israel, two things must be ensured: a readily available army of proxies to do the deed, using a steady supply of advanced and updated military equipment.

So far, the meetings between Qaani and the leaders of Hamas and Hezbollah secured the proxy condition. However, Tehran is well aware that Israeli weapons and military technologies are highly advanced, and therefore, has been looking for a way to test and evaluate their capabilities without risking open conflict against Jerusalem.

Luckily for Iran, one of its neighbors has in its arsenal plenty of Israeli arms but does not pose the military threat that Israel does. The Mullah regime certainly has the motive and will to instigate conflict between their ally, Armenia, and their Israeli-aligned neighbor, Azerbaijan.

Reported Armenian usage of Iranian drones may prove valuable to Iran by allowing someone else to test its technology against the Israeli counterpart without the risk of Iranian casualties. It is certainly not far from the realm of possibility considering several reports throughout the previous months indicating that the IRGC has been transporting and smuggling militants and weaponry into the separatist enclave of Karabakh, populated by Armenians in the recognized territory of Azerbaijan.

Additionally, as part of the ceasefire agreement to end the 2020 Karabakh war, Armenia was to allow the construction of a corridor on its southern border with Iran, allowing Azerbaijan to bridge its exclave of Nakhchivan with the mainland. Naturally, Iran opposed the project vehemently and has been outspoken about the issue with a multitude of threats of military intervention on the side of Armenia if any progress toward such a corridor would be made.

Let it also be remembered that last month, two official IRGC Telegram channels posted direct threats of a military attack, indicating that the intentions of Baku – puppeteered by the “Zionist regime” – were “for a hostile action against Armenia.”

Once again, this proves Iran has the capabilities and motive to instigate a conflict with Azerbaijan and to turn it into a proving ground for any new Iranian military developments which would be used to target Israel.

According to Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, Iran is actively waging a war of attrition against Israel on all fronts. However, the Israeli military stands ready to act in all arenas to ensure the security of the Jewish state. In this tumultuous time, it is imperative to stand united against any foreign security threats and essential to stand by the countries we can call allies and friends, such as Azerbaijan, in its own struggle with Iran.

YEREVAN, APRIL 8, ARMENPRESS. The United States Department of Defense said including Armenia in the list of participating countries of the Defender 23 military exercises happened by mistake.

In response to a query by the Voice of America, the Department of Defense said Armenia never participated in the Defender 23 drills and wasn’t supposed to be included in the list and that it happened as a result of an error by the Pentagon’s internal press team.

The U.S. Department of Defense removed Armenia on Thursday from the list of participants of the upcoming U.S.-led military exercise in Europe released by it on Wednesday.

The Armenian military said it plans to participate in two other US-led military exercises this year – KFOR and Saber Junction.

Lavrov: Statements by the leaders of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan remain the key to stabilization in the region

March 20 2023

We are talking about the economic, military-political and international legal spheres, Lavrov stressed. The first priority, he said, is the settlement of the situation with the Lachin road. Russia, according to him, is ready to provide all possible assistance in the demilitarization of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, unblocking transport communications.

Recall that the Lachin road, the only one that connects Armenia with Nagorno-Karabakh, has been blocked by Azerbaijan since December 12, 2022.

YEREVAN, MARCH 20, ARMENPRESS. On March 20, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan had a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow. The meeting started with a private conversation, then continued with the participation of the delegations in an expanded format.

As ARMENPRESS was informed from MFA Armenia, the Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Russia discussed a wide range of issues on the agenda of the Armenian-Russian allied relations and political dialogue.

Reference was made to issues of cooperation within international organizations.

Issues of regional stability and security were also discussed in detail.

Minister Mirzoyan emphasized that Azerbaijan's aggressive policy towards Nagorno-Karabakh and the sovereign territory of Armenia and the rhetoric at the highest level are aimed at aggravating the situation in the region and preparing the ground for new aggression. The imperative of condemning these practices, excluding the use of force and the threat of force, and fulfilling all obligations assumed by the tripartite declarations were emphasized in this context.

The sides emphasized the need to restore the Lachin Corridor regime in accordance with the provisions of the November 9, 2020 declaration.

The Armenian FM emphasized the need for the effective actions of the Russian peacekeeping forces in Nagorno Karabakh in preventing provocations from the Azerbaijani side, maintaining the ceasefire regime in the area of responsibility of the peacekeepers, and ensuring security in Nagorno Karabakh.

Ararat Mirzoyan highlighted the need to launch the relevant international instruments and send an international fact-finding mission to Nagorno Karabakh aimed at preventing Azerbaijan's policy of ethnic cleansing in Nagorno Karabakh.

A reference was made to the latest developments in the process of normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Based on the results of the meeting, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a joint press conference.

Armenian expert rejects ’empty illusions’ about lasting peace with Baku’s barbaric regime

Panorama
Armenia –

Iran specialist Vardan Voskanyan has denounced Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev over his renewed territorial claims against Armenia, insisting lasting peace with Baku's barbaric regime is impossible.

Speaking at a summit of Turkic states on Thursday, Aliyev again called the territory of present-day Armenia “Western Azerbaijan”.

“Do you realize that Azerbaijan, an artificial entity, refuses to acknowledge not only the existence of Artsakh, but also Armenia, as well as our hard-earned basic right to live in our sacred homeland and have a state,” Voskanyan wrote on Telegram on Friday.

“All illusions that any lasting peace is possible with the barbarians who do not even recognize our basic rights are empty and dangerous and, in fact, clear the way for a new genocide.

“Also empty and dangerous are all those "thoughts" that someone will fight against the barbarians instead of us. We could have supporters fighting with us, but no one will fight for Artsakh and Armenia instead of us,” the expert said.

Azerbaijan is derailing direct dialogue with Nagorno Karabakh, warns PM

YEREVAN, MARCH 16, ARMENPRESS. Azerbaijan is doing everything it can to derail direct dialogue with Nagorno Karabakh, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on Thursday.

“Despite the international-level agreements, after only two meetings Azerbaijan announced that it will discuss with Armenians of Nagorno Karabakh the topic of integration, whereas the international agreement was about the discussions revolving around the rights and security of the people of Nagorno Karabakh. On this backdrop, the initiation of an international mechanism for Stepanakert-Baku dialogue is becoming more important, because now it is already obvious that without such mechanism the agenda will be failed and ignored by Baku,” Pashinyan said.

Armenia to launch negotiations with UN High Commissioner for Refugees over Nagorno Karabakh IDPs

YEREVAN, MARCH 16, ARMENPRESS. Armenia is concerned that thus far the international mechanism envisaged under clause 7 of the 9 November 2020 trilateral statement hasn’t been initiated, PM Nikol Pashinyan said at the Cabinet meeting.

Clause 7 of the agreement provides for the return of internally displaced persons and refugees to Nagorno Karabakh and adjacent regions under the supervision of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

“This means that international mechanisms for return to Nagorno Karabakh’s Hadrut region, Shushi, Martuni and Martakert regions, Shahumyan region, Getashen, Lachin and other adjacent regions of Nagorno Karabakh must be initiated. And I have instructed the foreign ministry to start official negotiations with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees over this topic,” the PM said.

He added that Armenians who’ve been subjected to ethnic cleansing in Azerbaijan’s Baku, Shirvan, Sumgait, Kirovabad, Khanlar, Shamkhor, Nakhijevan and other regions are complaining about lack of government action for their return.

“The problem is that clause 7 of the November 9 statement concerns only refugees of Nagorno Karabakh and the adjacent regions, but of course this is not an obstruction for the Armenians who’ve been subjected to ethnic cleansing in Baku, Shirvan, Sumgait, Kirovabad, Khanlar, Shamkhor, Nakhijevan and other Azerbaijani regions to self-organize and protect their rights to property, return and other rights in international courts,” Pashinyan said.
