Food: Lesser-Known Armenian Dishes Get the Spotlight at This Glendale Strip Mall Find

Vernatoun highlights Armenian dishes often cooked at home for families and guests

Depending on one’s preference, the Glendale strip mall on the corner of Central and Chevy Chase Avenues is mostly known for a branch of Papillon International Bakery or an outlet of Baskin-Robbins, the ice cream chain founded in this city back in 1945. In spring of 2021, Vernatoun restaurant and banquet hall opened in the back corner of the strip mall, serving some of the most compelling Armenian food in Glendale. With faux brick walls, burgundy-clothed tables, and a layout that accommodates banquets (a fairly common business model in the city), the menu leans on classic Armenian dishes executed for their target demographic: the largest Armenian community in the United States.

Armenian cuisine exists as part of a diaspora, since the country’s people spread across the Caucasus, Mediterranean, Middle East, and elsewhere to escape atrocities that Turkey perpetrated upon the Armenian people beginning in 1915. Restaurateurs who have reached Los Angeles to start businesses often incorporate influences from intervening generations spent in countries like Russia, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, and Greece.

Vernatoun’s kitchen manager Valog Vartanyan grew up in Tehran; his grandfathers escaped persecution in Armenia and moved to Iran before he was born. Vartanyan has lived in LA for 12 years. He previously cooked at another Armenian restaurant in Glendale that closed due to the pandemic before joining Vernatoun, whose owner and general manager hail from Yerevan, Armenia’s capital.

An NFT token was sold for 3.8 million drams (approximately $8,000) by the producers of the Armenian ten-episode film 'Musk Factor,' depicting the colonization of Mars. NFT coins were reportedly shown at the OpenSea platform, according to the project's press release. Musk Factor's General Producer Raphael Tadevosyan said that NFT coins would be popular in 2022. Artists (illustrators, painters) find them particularly appealing since they can digitize and sell their work.

He went on to say that NFT is a digital asset whose copyrights may be sold since it is an excellent intellectual work. Even a simple tweet may be a kind of NFT. According to Tadevosyan,

"that our community is getting into the NFT game is impressive. We are ecstatic that the NFTs we have developed have attracted so much attention from throughout the world."

Throughout the 10-episode Musk Factor, virtual reality and artificial intelligence technologies are given prominent roles. In addition, Bitcoin founder Satoshi Nakamoto is shown as Jesus Christ's second coming in the narrative set in 2032, and the novel's conclusion entirely refutes Einstein's theory of relativity.

Elon Musk had already colonized Mars at that point. To aid with the migration of humanity to Mars, an Armenian engineer has been sent to the red planet. For his father, Adam has a digital clone of him created by his father, an engineer, who passed away a few years ago.

Adam and his buddies launched a social network that employs technology to generate virtual human clones to expand the concept. However, to grow the business, the buddies will have to deal with issues like generating money, fostering a sense of camaraderie among the employees, and spotting potential employees.

Beginning in January 2021, production on the Musk Factor comedic episodes will be completed by summer 2022, according to the show's current release date. Raphael Tadevosyan, the show's executive producer and author of the five million-subscriber-strong Luxury Food London blog, is a well-known name in worldwide public relations and media.

As a result of the initiative, Armenian films will be more widely available on the world's most popular streaming platforms.

Last year, Berj Najarian took a step out of his comfort zone and into the spotlight “to raise awareness for Armenians under attack.” The support Najarian received was swift and passionate. The winning bid for his sneakers last year was the highest since the NFL established the My Cause My Cleats campaign.

This set the groundwork for Najarian to take his activism a step further. Najarian announced the launching of Who We Are, an organization that will support those who are committed to preserving, creating, learning, and sharing cultural identity.

While for Najarian that cultural identity is Armenian, Who We Are is a multi-cultural initiative that will celebrate people's uniqueness and similarities.

"Culture is a lot of things. It's values, language, art, music, sports, architecture, food, traditions, and customs. It is science and innovation. So it could be different things to different people," Najarian said. "Our aim is to support organizations and individuals committed to preserving, understanding cultures, theirs or others'. That's where we feel the connection and unity will come from in our communities."

Being an Armenian-American is foundational to why Najarian wanted to start Who We Are. The Armenian Genocide killed more than a million Armenian people between 1915 and 1922. Cultural identity for Armenians around the world is a point of pride and an act of survival.

Through conversations as a team about racial and social injustices over the last two years, Najarian recognized common themes regarding human rights, self-determination and justice. He saw people from all backgrounds come together to support one another and was able to educate the team about Armenians. After the murder of George Floyd, players and coaches shared their experiences of living as Black men and dealing with racism in the United States. Chris Mattes shined a light on issues facing Native communities through his friendship with Lyle Thompson and support of his family's non-profit.

Seeing these connections play out between people from different cultures, traditions, and heritages in the locker room was part of what motivated Najarian to create Who We Are.

"Everyone has a story about who they are, where they came from and where they are going. That's what Who We Are is about and a lot of it stems from the special environment within our team and organization." he said. "It is a testament to how much can be accomplished when people are willing to listen, learn and act on behalf of others."

The launch of Who We Are coincides with My Cause My Cleats, and Najarian is again wearing custom sneakers with a purpose. One shoe is an homage to his Armenian heritage, including smiling Armenian children, an eternity symbol very prominent in Armenian designs, and notably to Najarian, an image of Mount Ararat within the Armenian coat of arms. Above the mountain is a symbol representing the iconic biblical ark's final resting place. "Yes, that ark," Najarian said, referring to Noah's Ark.

The other shoe represents the broader mission of Who We Are, with the words "Who We Are" inscribed in as many languages as could fit on one shoe, including Spanish, Portuguese, Swahili, Hindi, Hebrew, Thai, and others.

"Who We Are exists to help advance cultural identity and connections between diverse people who make incredible contributions to the world. We think it's a great way to simultaneously carry on legacies and help create new ones."

Armen Grigoryan clarifies why Ruben Rubinyan was appointed Armenia’s envoy for negotiations with Turkey

News.am, Armenia
Dec 22 2021

Ruben Rubinyan was the head of the Standing Committee on Foreign Relations of the National Assembly, specializes in this sector, and there is another factor that makes him an effective negotiator — he has ties with the Prime Minister and his team. This is what Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia Armen Grigoryan said in an interview aired on Armenian Public Television, touching upon the question why it was decided to send Rubinyan as Armenia’s special representative to represent Armenia during the upcoming negotiations with Turkey.

Asked if it wouldn’t be right to place emphasis on rich experience in diplomacy and not the political ties of the envoy and the ties with the team, Grigoryan noted the following:

“We believe that the factors I mentioned are more important since any kind of issue can be set forth during the negotiations, and there will be a need to verify a particular issue with the Prime Minister. We took all this into consideration, and we considered Mr. Rubinyan’s appointment more effective. Modern diplomacy is undergoing several changes, and we shouldn’t think about the modern processes with old patterns,” he stated.

A few days ago, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu declared that Armenia and Turkey will appoint special envoys to discuss the steps aimed at normalizing their relations. Turkey will be represented by Serdar Kilic, who served as Turkey’s Ambassador to the United States for 7 years and served as Secretary General of the National Security Council of Turkey before that. Armenia’s special envoy will be Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia Ruben Rubinyan, who held the position of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for a few months after shift of power and then chaired the Standing Committee on Foreign Relations in the seventh convocation of the National Assembly. In 2017, Rubinyan was in Turkey for a few months and, as he declared from the podium in parliament on August 3, conducted research.

Ruben Ghazarian, a 9th grader at the Armenian Academy at Blair High School in Pasadena, California, has been named a 2022 Finalist in the Congressional App Challenge.

This competition is the most prestigious prize in student computer science. The Challenge seeks to inspire and innovate efforts around STEM, coding, and computer science.

Congresswoman Judy Chu, representative for California’s 27th congressional district, announced the five finalists and winner on December 16th. A total of 27 students from Congresswoman Chu’s district entered the competition.

Ghazarian has been coding for over two years and was excited for the opportunity to compete in this challenge. His app, entitled “Resto-Math,” took over two months to develop, which he did in between his studies at school.

According to Ghazarian, he designed the app to help students learn math in an entertaining way, without being repetitive. He hopes to one day have a career in business, computer science, engineering, or robotics.

Ruben is the son of Pasadena residents Mr. and Mrs. Garabed and Lucine Ghazarian.
