Sports: Italy take the Mkhi in Armenia

Italy take the Mkhi in Armenia

The Azzurri did just about enough to grind out a win over 10-man Armenia, but it was a reality check for Giancarlo Rinaldi.

It wasn’t pretty nor very much deserved, that’s for sure. If grinding out wins in uninspiring fashion is a symptom of coming down with a winning mentality, then this might be just what the Azzurri team doctor ordered. For the rest of us, enthused by some of the nice football seen in previous outings, a flattering triumph over Armenia felt about as good as chugging down your cough medicine when you are six years old.

We couldn’t say, I suppose, that we had not been warned. The usual mutterings about the game being too early in the Serie A season proved prophetic once more. Nobody ever made much money by betting on Italy being impressive in their first outing of a new season. If bookies paid out on a display’s quality, they’d have been keeping their cash firmly in their pockets once again.

In the end, of course, three points are three points and another vital step towards Euro 2020, and there was the consolation that it looked – at times – like things could have been worse. A lacklustre opening quarter of an hour – when Roberto Mancini’s side went behind to an Alexander Karapetyan strike – threatened to make it an even longer evening.

To watch a man who looked like Daniele De Rossi’s bulky Armenian cousin waltz through to score was a worry. The spectre of a Giorgio Chiellini-shaped hole in the defence was evident in front of Gigio Donnarumma. It was hard to think the injured Juve stalwart would not have made a better fist of blocking the onrushing forward before he found the net.

Credit to the team for shaking off that shock to produce a decent comeback. They started to knock on the door – with Chelsea’s Emerson continuing his good league form – and it was no surprise he had a part to play in the equaliser. When he set up Andrea Belotti, it looked like winning would be a formality. How wrong we were.

A dodgy red card for Armenia’s goalscorer – with a second yellow for an elbow which appeared to make minimal contact on Leonardo Bonucci – ought to have made the task even easier, but it singularly failed to do so. The playing surface may not have been perfect, but there were too many sloppy passes and too many wrong decisions made, as Mancio went doolally on the sidelines. It surprised nobody when he whipped off both his Federicos – Chiesa and Bernardeschi – in the second half. Neither delivered the impact they would have hoped for.

To add to Italian frustration, Marco Verratti picked up a senseless booking which rules him out of the upcoming Finland game. The little midfielder is brilliant, but he does seem to have a love affair with the yellow card which is frustrating. It is hard to build a team around a man who is likely to pick up a suspension with alarming regularity. Mind you, he’s so lovely to watch on the ball, you have to forgive him some failings. Not everybody does, of course.

As Team Italia huffed and puffed it looked more like they might get caught on the break by new Roma man Henrikh Mkhitaryan and his companions despite their one-man disadvantage than power on to win. Goals from sub Lorenzo Pellegrini and a Belotti shot that bounced in off the goalie eventually gave a flattering scoreline.

They might even have had more – with Il Gallo having a strike incorrectly ruled offside – but that would have been truly hurtful to the fans in Yerevan.

There’s no need to panic about the drab nature of the performance as long as the Azzurri get the job done in Finland, but this was a little reality check.

On the back foot, Italy looked out of sorts and underlined why they need to take the game to opponents as much as they can. They also need to sharpen up their finishing and decision making when they are on top if they hope to dispense with these games in more convincing fashion.

Italy fans of long-standing have seen more displays like this than they would care to think about. The important thing, we know, is to learn the lessons it provided in order to be ready for the sterner tests to come.

LOS ANGELES—Tufenkian Fine Arts is honored to present “Vahe Berberian: A Kiss is not Lip Service,” a new exhibition featuring selected works by Vahe Berberian. The opening reception will be held on Friday, September 13, beginning at 7 p.m. The show will remain on view through October 25. The gallery is located at 216 S Louise St, Glendale, CA 91205.

This will be Berberian’s first solo exhibition at Tufenkian Fine Arts. The multifaceted artist, who has become a household name with his monologues, plays and novels, says he is his own ruthless critic, and it took him a while to finally feel satisfied with the work he is exhibiting. “Almost all of these pieces have more than a dozen layers to them. I paint over and over again until I give the piece enough texture to have its own history. I stop only when I realize that I can’t touch the piece any more.” “A Kiss is Not Lip Service,” will feature over 40 of Berberian’s recent and never before seen works on canvas, paper and assemblages. “I have been preparing for this exhibition for the past five years and, honestly, I haven’t been this excited for a long time,” said Vahe Berberian about his upcoming exhibition.

“Vahe and I have been talking about a new exhibition for a while, and we are thrilled to finally see this major exhibition come to fruition. About two years ago, together we decided that Tufenkian Fine Arts should be Vahe’s home, and we are honored to represent him,” noted Gallery Director Caroline Lais-Tufenkian. “Vahe has produced so much work over the past few years—it was a challenge selecting work for this exhibition. We selected a number of impressive works that we are certain you will appreciate,” she concluded. Visit us to see a wide range of whimsical, poetic, and charming work in various dimensions and colors suitable for all art lovers.
The exhibition will have a 62-page monograph, with an essay by Los Angeles based artist and writer Kireilyn Barber, a statement by Vahe Berberian, a foreword by Caroline Lais-Tufenkian, and over 60 color images. The monograph will be released and available for purchase at the opening.

Tufenkian and Berberian have collaborated on three exhibitions prior to “A Kiss is Not Lip Service,” and their friendship has deep roots. We look forward to welcoming you to experience Vahe Berberian’s powerful personal work.

The Constitutional Court said it has received a written response on August 20th stating that the Venice Commission will express its opinion.

Culture: The Matenadaran: This medieval manuscript collection has some of the most obscure and ancient texts in the world.

Atlas Obscura
Aug 23 2019

Armenia has had a rich tradition of scriptoriums for over a millennium. Throughout the Middle Ages, very active scriptoriums were found in towns near the shores of the Mediterranean, on Lake Van, in Jugha, Tatev, and many other spots. The illustrated manuscripts were especially valued, as they were painted in actual gold or silver.

Unfortunately, Armenia also has a long history of being invaded, and has seen its libraries plundered and burned too many times. Tired of this, in 1959 the Soviet Armenian government decided to step in and build a massive fortress on a hill in the center of the capital, with storage deep in the earth, and gather as many manuscripts as it could there for safekeeping.

Thus, the Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts was born. The name being cumbersome, it’s been popularly called the Matenadaran ever since, which is a combination of the Armenian words for “parchment” and “repository.” Outside the building stands a statue of the institute’s namesake, Mesrop Mashtots, the inventor of the Armenian alphabet.

With over 23,000 manuscripts and 500,000 additional documents, some of the most obscure and ancient texts from the early medieval age can be found at the Matenadaran. There is a 9th-century gospel, and the ivory-carved cover of a 6th-century gospel as well. The Vehamor Gospel, probably dating to the 7th century, is the oldest-known complete Armenian manuscript in the world. There are manuscripts in other languages, from Greek to Ethiopian, and some works by renowned foreign authors that were almost lost to history, and only saved by their Armenian translations at the Matenadaran.

Know Before You Go

Most of the works in the vast collection are only accessible by researchers, but the display rooms feature a stunning array of hand-chosen manuscripts that give an excellent glimpse into the rest of the collection.

YEREVAN, AUGUST 9, ARMENPRESS. Congressional opposition to the Trump Administration attempts to cut U.S. aid for the Artsakh de-mining continues to grow with 22 Senators from 16 states representing 143 million Americans co-signing a letter defending this life-saving program. The Senate initiative was led by Senate Foreign Relations Committee Ranking Democrat Bob Menendez (D-NJ), ARMENPRESS was informed from the official website of the Armenian National Committee of America.

Earlier, on August 5, the U.S. House of Representatives sent a swift and powerful rebuke to the Trump Administration’s efforts to cut U.S. aid for Artsakh de-mining efforts, with 89 Members of Congress – many chairing key House committees – co-signing a letter, led by senior House Foreign Affairs Committee member Brad Sherman (D-CA) and Congressman TJ Cox (D-CA), defending this life-saving program.

The Sherman-Cox letter, an initiative supported by the ANCA, encourages USAID Administrator Mark Green to reverse course and continue U.S. funding for the Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh) de-mining program. Administrator Green testified before the Foreign Affairs Committee on April 9th of this year that USAID was committed to completing the clearance of landmines and unexploded ordnances within the traditional boundaries of Nagorno Karabakh.

“Within a week, during a Congressional recess, eighty-nine U.S. Representatives from 24 states – including 10 full Committee chairs – joined with the ANCA in openly challenging the Trump Administration’s misguided attempt to end U.S. aid to Artsakh – a powerful response that speaks volumes about the scope and depth of American support for this life-saving program,” said ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian. “We thank Representatives Sherman and Cox for leading this effort on the House side, are actively supporting the efforts of Senator Menendez on the Senate side, and will continue our work to make Artsakh mine-free and expand the U.S. aid program to include vital rehabilitation services,” continued Hamparian.

Members of Congress received thousands of letters and calls from constituents through the ANCA Rapid Responder system and March to Justice platforms in support of continued aid to Artsakh, with the ANCA Leo Sarkisian and Maral Melkonian Avetisyan summer fellows meeting with hundreds of Capitol Hill staffers in support of the initiative.

YEREVAN, AUGUST 3, ARMENPRESS. (Press release, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Artsakh) On August 2, the delegation headed by Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Artsakh Masis Mayilian met with Mayor of the Australian city of Ryde Jerome Laxale.

Masis Mayilyan stressed the importance of the unanimous adoption by the Ryde City Council of the resolution on establishing friendly relations with Stepanakert, the Artsakh capital, on the eve of the Artsakh delegation's working visit to Australia. According to the Foreign Minister, the adoption of such a resolution is another proof of the principled stance of the Ryde city authorities in supporting the aspiration of the people of Artsakh for free and peaceful development, which has already been expressed on May 22, 2018 resolution adopted on the 30th anniversary of the national-liberation movement of the people of Artsakh.

Touching upon the international relations of the Republic of Artsakh, Masis Mayilian noted that the establishment and development of decentralized cooperation between Artsakh and foreign cities is among the priorities of the authorities of Artsakh, which allows the communities and regions of Artsakh to be involved in international processes, aimed at strengthening the friendly relations between the peoples, exchanging experience in different areas and promoting human rights. The Foreign Minister stressed that the development of decentralized cooperation is also important against the background of Azerbaijan's continuous efforts to isolate Artsakh and to deprive its citizens of the advantage of international cooperation.

For his part, Mayor of Ryde Jerome Laxale reaffirmed the commitment of the Ryde authorities to the realization of the right of the people of Artsakh to self-determination and support in their quest to build a democratic society.

During the meeting, Masis Mayilian handed the thank-you letter of Stepanakert Mayor Suren Grigoryan to Jerome Laxale, in which the Mayor expressed his gratitude for the adoption of the resolution and invited Jerome Laxale to visit Stepanakert.

Member of Ryde City Council Sargis Yedelian, member of the National Assembly of Artsakh David Ishkhanyan, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Artsakh to Australia Kaylar Michaelyan and Executive Director of the Armenian National Committee (Hay Dat) of Australia Hayk Kayserian also participated in the meeting.
