TURKISH press: Germany follows France’s example banning nonexistent Turkish group

The German federal parliament has approved a motion that proposes the prohibition of Turkish organizations linked to the so-called Grey Wolves movement, following the precedent set in France, reports said Thursday.

The Bundestag passed the motion titled “Opposing nationalism and racism, suppressing the effect of the Grey Wolves movement” prepared by the union parties of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) and the Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CSU), as well as the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Greens.

The motion includes taking action to prevent and suppress the spread of the Grey Wolves movement in Europe, the German government keeping track of its activities, prohibiting linked associations and opposing online propaganda to allegedly inform the public and institutions about the goals of the movement.

Meanwhile, the Interior Ministry, which has the prerogative to shut down organizations and associations, has not commented on the issue.

Earlier this month, the Turkish Foreign Ministry criticized France's controversial move to ban the group, saying that no such organization or movement exists.

France's "imaginary decision," as if such a movement exists, is the "final manifestation of the contradictory psychology of the country," the ministry said.

However, it added, it is unacceptable to ban cultural symbols used in many countries around the world, which are extremely common and have no illegal dimensions.

Germany, a country of over 82 million people, has the second-largest Muslim population in Western Europe after France. Among the country's nearly 4.7 million Muslims, 3 million are of Turkish origin. Germans of Turkish origin have been part of German society for nearly three decades. In 1961, Turkey and Germany signed a recruitment agreement, which allowed Turkish citizens to work in Germany as guest workers.

This Turkish population, largely descending from the country's "guest workers" who arrived to aid the post-World War II development boom, often complain of the racist attacks and lack of follow-up in police investigations for such incidents.

Germany has witnessed growing anti-Muslim hate crimes in recent years sparked by hate propaganda by far-right parties.

The number of attacks targeting the Turkish minority in France has also increased recently. Last month, members of the Armenian community wounded four Turkish citizens who were demonstrating on the A7 motorway connecting Lyon and Marseille.

Rising Islamophobia, racism and xenophobia in Europe threaten the safety of approximately 6 million Turkish citizens living in European countries, according to Deputy Foreign Minister Yavuz Selim Kıran.

EXCLUSIVE: Azerbaijan, Armenia ‘near ceasefire deal’ on Nagorno-Karabakh

Draft deal forces Armenia to withdraw from some areas amid the deployment of a Turkish and Russian peacekeeping force, Turkish sources tell MEE

Azerbaijan and Armenia are close to striking a meaningful ceasefire deal over the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh and its surrounding regions which have been occupied by Armenia since 1992, Turkish sources have told Middle East Eye.

The deal will mandate Armenia to cede a large chunk of territory while placing a Turkish and Russian peacekeeping mission in the area.

On Sunday, Azerbaijan announced it had captured Shusha, Nagorno-Karabakh's second-largest city, a claim Armenia denied.

Explained: Armenia and Azerbaijan's Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

The sources, speaking to Middle East Eye on condition of anonymity, said that the rapid progress of Azerbaijani forces on the ground had pushed Armenia to consider the Russian mediation plan, which is backed by Turkey, to stop the conflict.

At least 1,000 people, and possibly up to 5,000, have been killed since fighting broke out on 27 September in the enclave, an internationally recognised part of Azerbaijan but populated and controlled by ethnic Armenians.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, reached an understanding on the components of a draft deal on Saturday in a phone call, the sources said.

The details were discussed by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, in a subsequent phone conversation.

According to the draft deal, Armenia will immediately withdraw from five out of seven occupied raions (a type of administrative unit of several post-Soviet states) surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh, once both sides agree to the conditions of the truce.

Under the terms of the ceasefire, Yerevan will pull out from the remaining two raions in 15 days. The draft deal does not require Baku to leave its recently captured territories, but would put a halt to Azerbaijan's offensive against Nagorno-Karabakh, which is now partly controlled by Baku.

In a significant move, both sides will possibly agree to the establishment of two corridors.

One road leading from Armenia to Nagorno-Karabakh would initially ensure Yerevan's access to the region. Armenia, in return, will allow the creation of a second corridor which would connect the Azerbaijan territory of Nakhcivan to Baku.

The Turkish and Russian peacekeeping forces would then be deployed to uphold the ceasefire.

"The Azerbaijani government doesn't want to rapidly seize [the city of] Khankendi [Stepanakert in Armenian] and cause civilian casualties," one of the Turkish sources said.

"This deal stops the possible humanitarian crisis while honouring the legitimate Azerbaijani demands on the territory."

Nagorno-Karabakh broke away from Azerbaijan in the 1990s, prompting a long unresolved conflict that has seen tens of thousands of people killed.

The disputed mountainous area has been held by Armenian forces for nearly three decades, despite four UN Security Council resolutions urging them to withdraw.

Three other ceasefire attempts since September have failed, with both sides accusing each other of violating it. But none of the deals directly included Turkey as a guarantor.

The game changer in the frozen conflict appears to have been Turkey's direct military aid to Azerbaijan since the summer.

Close allies Turkey and Azerbaijan have conducted joint military drills for years, most recently in August, when Turkish officers shared the experience and expertise they had developed in the Syrian and Libyan conflicts.

Turkey has brought in Syrian mercenaries to prop up Azerbaijani defences, while deploying Turkish military staff capabilities to create a strategy for Baku.

Turkey has also sold armed drones which have devastated the Armenian front and deployed Turkish F-16s as a deterrent, even though they were not used in the actual fighting.

A second Turkish source said Ankara has seen an opening in the Nagorno-Karabakh region while the US and the rest of the world had been focusing on the US presidential elections.

Ankara believes the Russians, on the other hand, have turned a blind eye to the Turkish-backed offensive to punish Armenia's Western-backed leader, Nikol Pashinyan.

"Russians have only complained about the Syrian mercenaries' presence on the battlefield," the source said.

"Lavrov even described the city of Shusha as an Azerbaijani city in his talks with a Turkish delegation in Moscow last month."

The sources said Azerbaijan had ramped up its efforts to take more territory over the weekend ahead of the declaration of the ceasefire.

Junior Eurovision: Armenia: Maléna Fox would have been the country’s representative for Junior Eurovision 2020

WiWi Blogs
Nov 6 2020

Earlier today, Armenia withdrew from Junior Eurovision 2020 due to the introduction of martial law in the region. The head of the Armenian delegation, David Tserunyan, has since revealed that national broadcaster ARMTV had intended to send Maléna Fox as their representative to the contest this year.

A song had also been selected and recorded by Maléna. However, the 13-year-old singer will no longer get the chance to perform the song at the contest.

Until now, the Armenian delegation had not publicly revealed anything about their planned participation at Junior Eurovision 2020. However, in a post on Instagram, Tserunyan disclosed that many things had been happening behind the scenes over the last few months:

“Dear friends and Eurovision fans, it is with great sadness that we announce our withdrawal from JESC 2020. Our team has been working tirelessly for months, to make our participation possible even during Covid19 and this unprecedented aggression in our region. But the war in Artsakh enters into a severe stage. […]

Back in July, we have internally chosen Maléna to represent our country. A 13 year old girl, who is immensely talented, kind and passionate for music and her country. I’m proud to say that she was a big part of this decision and we all feel grateful to have such an incredible generation of young Armenians.

Make no mistake, we will come back, stronger than ever.”

Tserunyan’s post indicates that the Armenian team had been putting together plans to participate at Junior Eurovision 2020 since at least July this year, which is when they internally selected Maléna.

As with all other countries taking part, precautions around Covid-19 were being put in place so that Maléna could perform at the contest remotely. However, the introduction of martial law during the current conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) was a step that the delegation were seemingly unable to overcome.

Posting on her own Instagram page, Maléna confirmed that she had a song ready to perform at Junior Eurovision. Although she won’t be able to sing it at the contest this year, Maléna and her team still plan on releasing the track for people to listen to in the near future:

“Considering the message of the song, our team and me have decided to release the song in the nearest future. Stay tuned, subscribe to my youtube channel for upcoming news.”

Maléna Fox is a 13-year-old singer from Armenia. Since the start of 2020, she has been working with the small Yerevan-based record label TKN.

TKN was founded by record producer tokionine. He previously produced “Walking Out”, Armenia’s Eurovision 2019 entry performed by Srbuk.

On her YouTube channel, Maléna has so far released two cover videos. One is of “Broken Clocks”, originally sung by American singer SZA. The other is a stripped-back mashup of a number of hit R’n’B songs, including Drake’s “Hotline Bling” and The Weeknd’s “Heartless”.

These cover videos show that Maléna appears to favour R’n’B songs as an artist. This gives us a small insight into what her Junior Eurovision 2020 entry may have been like.

Nevertheless, since Maléna has stated her intention to release her selected entry at some point, we should find out in the near future exactly what style of song she was planning to perform at the contest.

Are you sad that Maléna Fox won’t be able to represent Armenia at Junior Eurovision 2020? Are you excited to hear what her selected entry would have been? Let us know in the comments below!
