Surprise discovery reveals lost Armenian family history

An American-Armenian man revealed a lost family history when he made the surprise discovery of a photograph of his relatives from Ottoman Armenia, the Fresno Bee reported.

Fresno man Michael Rettig discovered the photograph while going through his grandmother’s family archives, and initially thought it was of his ancestors’ family friends from the eastern Anatolian province of Bitlis.

Rettig later discovered a legal document drafted to sue the Ottoman Empire for family property lost during the Armenian genocide, and realised the photograph was of the family of his great-great grandfather, Mardiros Gashagortzian, who drafted the document.

There is widespread international recognition that the Ottoman Empire perpetrated a genocide of its Armenian population starting in 1915, with the most widely cited figure saying 1.5 million people were killed.

The Turkish Republic accepts that hundreds of thousands were massacred, but denies that a genocide took place, saying the killings occurred under wartime conditions and were not centrally organised.

Mardiros’s document describes the deaths of many members of his family, including some who Rettig identified in the photograph.

I realized the photograph of the unknown family included Mardiros’s mother (my great-great-great-grandmother Mary), and his brother Harutyoon’s family in Bitlis in 1912. Mary is pictured seated on the right, proudly holding a portrait of Mardiros and his family that they had taken and mailed upon arriving in America. Her second son, Harutyoon, is seated in the middle next to his wife, both of whom would be murdered by Turkish soldiers three years after the photograph was taken.

The document describes how four of Harutyoon’s children were killed during the genocide, with the two eldest boys killed alongside other Armenian men early on, and a younger daughter killed during one of the death marches Ottoman troops forced the displaced Armenians on.

However, two of Harutyoon’s children survived, with one daughter fleeing to Aleppo and a son hiding his Armenian heritage by assuming the Turkish name Cemal. Rettig discovered letters from both relatives in the archive.

“These letters from the few who survived, the family picture, and Mardiros’s legal document constitute all that remains of Harutyoon’s family. They were massacred, torn from their homeland, their land and property confiscated,” Rettig said.

Their story is but one example of the devastation the Ottoman Turks inflicted upon Armenian families during the genocide, but it also an example of their failure. That I am sitting here today, 104 years later, with this picture of the Gashagortzians in my hand and the memory of Harutyoon, Jarjis, Khoshvart, and Siranoosh in my heart, and that Armenians around the world continue to gather on April 24 to keep the memories and stories of their ancestors alive year after year, is a testament to this failure. We are still here, and we still remember and honor those we have lost.

Asarez: Gladys Berejiklian Becomes First Elected Female Premier of Australia’s New South Wales

Gladys Berejiklian with her family and supporters after accepting victory in Saturday’s election

SYDNEY—The Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC-AU) congratulated Armenian-Australian Gladys Berejiklian on becoming the first elected female Premier of Australia’s largest state of New South Wales. While it is yet unclear whether she will win with a majority or minority government, the Leader of the Opposition Michael Daley has conceded defeat, and Berejiklian has accepted victory.

A gracious Berejiklian thanked many in her speech, reserving special praise for the people of New South Wales: “No matter your background or where you live, you can be the Premier of New South Wales – a state where someone with a long surname and a woman can be the Premier.”

In January 2017, Berejiklian asceneded to the position of Premier of tNew South Wales  following the resignation of her predecessor Mike Baird.

Berejiklian’s victory has ensured she also makes history as the first leader of the Liberal (LIB) and National (NAT) Coalition to lead her political party to a third consecutive term in office.

“This is a historic day for Armenian-Australians and for the global Armenian community, as Ms Berejiklian continues to be the most powerful Armenian woman in world politics; this time being elected in her own right to lead the executive branch of a government that runs a state of 7 million people – the largest state of a G20 nation,” said ANC-AU Executive Director, Haig Kayserian.

“The Armenian community of New South Wales is filled with joy, as support for Ms Berejiklian extends beyond party politics – the opportunity for an Armenian-Australian, for ‘Our Gladys’ to be elected was too big not to get completely behind,” Kayserian added.

ANC-AU has also congratulated the close friends of the Armenian-Australian community, who were re-elected to their seats in the NSW Parliament, including Berejiklian (who has also retained her seat from Willoughby.

“We congratulate all our friends and victors during the NSW State Election, which includes a series of Members in the Legislative Council that will become clearer in coming days,” Kayserian said. “We also extend our condolences to all losing candidates, many of whom we met and won support from on key issues to our community, including but not limited to justice for the Armenian Genocide and the rights to self-determination of the Armenians of the Republic of Artsakh.”

“We also wish to thank all our community volunteers, who helped the Armenian National Committee of Australia understand community needs and numbers during this NSW State Election campaign,” added Kayserian.

Armenian side works intensively to bring Karen Ghazaryan back to Armenia

Panorama, Armenia

Defense Minister of Armenia, the Head of the Armenian State Commission for Prisoners of War, Hostages, and Missing Persons Davit Tonoyan received today Armen Ghazaryan, the father of Karen Ghazaryan sentenced to 20 years in jail in Azerbaijan.

As the press department at the ministry reported, the Head of the state commission informed Ghazaryan that the Armenian side is intensively working to bring Ghazaryan to Armenia in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross in Armenia, the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs as well as international structures dealing with human rights.

To remind, Ghazaryan accidentally crossed the border with Azerbaijan on July 15, 2018 and was sentenced to 20 years of prison days ago charged with attempting to carry out terrorist attacks in Azerbaijan. 34-year-old Ghazaryan, whom the Azerbaijani authorities are trying to present as a ‘saboteur’, has a history of mental illness, which has prevented him from being conscripted for military service.

Armenia PM: Do we need waste recycling plant? Or energy? Armenia PM: Do we need waste recycling plant? Or energy?

13:06, 23.03.2019

YEREVAN. – A working group is now working. Our resources will be studied. The study has come, reached a dilemma: Do we need a waste recycling plant? Or energy?

The Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, told the above-said to reporters during the nationwide Saturday volunteer labor day in the country.

“You get another result from waste recycling, whereas you get energy in the other case,” he said. “Here it’s not an issue of political decision, but experts shall check the structure of the waste created, and say which option it will be.”

“I would consider the revolution [that took place in Armenia] has really reached its objective when we get rid of waste: car scraps, rusty kiosks,” the PM noted.

Pashinyan stressed that capital city Yerevan needs a second waste management operator, but added that the respective process will last at least six months.

Armenian Insurance Foundation for Servicemen will reach more victims

The foundation pays compensation to the families of the dead and injured soldiers through monthly deductions from the salaries of all residents of Armenia

The Armenian Insurance Foundation for Servicemen is expanding its reach: starting from 1 April this year, families of military personnel who died or received disability compensation from 2008 to 2014 will receive monthly payments.

Previously, the fund only compensated families of military personnel who died or were injured between 2015 to 2016.

How the game of war is played in Armenia and Azerbaijan

As a result of the decision, the number of people receiving aid from the foundation will dramatically rise.

Starting next year, the scope will expand even further, and compensation will be given for even older cases.

The executive director of the fund, Varyuzhan Avetikyan, noted that currently the amount collected by the fund exceeded 14 billion drams ($28 million), and the total amount of payments during the period of the fund’s operation has already reached 941 million drams ($1.9 million).

The Insurance Foundation for Servicemen was launched in 2017.

The idea was proposed by former Minister of Defence Vigen Sargsyan. The creation of the fund was timed with the 25th anniversary of the Armenian army. Its purpose is to provide compensation to the families of dead and wounded soldiers.

The law On Compensation of Damage to the Life or Health of Military Personnel During the Defence of the Republic of Armenia came into force on 9 January 2017, with 1,000 AMD (about two dollars) deducted monthly from the salaries of all residents of Armenia.

The fund is also replenished through larger, private donations.

As a result, the families of victims, as well as soldiers of the first group with disabilities, are paid in total about ten million drams (about 21 thousand dollars) and five million drams (a little more than 10 thousand dollars) to the disabled of the second group.

At one point, the creation of the foundation caused an ambiguous reaction in society.

Residents of Armenia have always been very warm towards young people defending the borders of Armenia. In society there has always been a willingness to help the army. The problem of negative attitudes was that the people of the country did not trust the former government nor its promises about the transparency of the use of the collected funds.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced in 2018, while meeting with the mothers of dead soldiers, that more people would be helped by the Insurance Foundation for Servicemen.

At the time, Pashinyan said that in the coming years, taking into account the capabilities of the foundation, the period for assistance would increase.

“The problem is not only in the distribution of benefits, but also in the ability to pay this money on time. We cannot promise, and then fail to keep our promises – and thereby offend people,” said the prime minister.

Half a year later, on 22 March, Nikol Pashinyan wrote on his Facebook page:

“Starting from 1 April 2019, the 1,000 dram fund will begin to pay compensation to soldiers who received disabilities in the 1st and 2nd groups, and to the families of soldiers who died during combat duty from January 2008 inclusive. This is an extremely important decision and consolation for all of us.”
