Tribune News Service

Bathinda, December 20

A city-based immigration firm allegedly duped around 22 city residents of approximately Rs 18 lakhs on the pretext of sending them to Armenia. As per residents who are now terming it a fraud, the travel agent of the firm has locked the office and is absconding now.

Lakhvir Singh, Jatinder Singh, Baldev Singh from the city and Bittu from Amritsar, among others, said, “An immigration firm, Standard Life, that was operating in the Basant Nagar area has cheated us. The owner of the firm, Mandeep Singh, and his assistant Simarjit Kaur had promised us of providing work visa and jobs of food packers and drivers in Armenia. They charged Rs 90,000 from each candidate. There are 22 candidates cheated by the firm. The travel agent not only fled away with the money, but also did not return our passports.”

They said, “Even the air travel tickets provided by them were fake and we had to return from the Delhi airport after the authorities concerned raised questions over the authenticity of the documents/tickets. When we contacted the assistant working at the immigration firm, she told us that the tickets have exceeded the travel time limit and asked us to return to Bathinda so that she could provide fresh tickets to us. But when we came back to Bathinda from Delhi, we were shocked to see that the office of the immigration firm was lying locked. ”

The victims have submitted a written complaint to SSP Nanak Singh and urged him to do the needful.

ARMENIA’S DEMOCRACY STRONG,
PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS PRAISED BY INTERNATIONAL OBSERVERS

WASHINGTON,
D.C.
– In a proud moment for the Republic of Armenia, the will of its citizens
for a more democratic and transparent government has prevailed in open
parliamentary elections, consolidating the previous gains registered during the
peaceful protests for change in April this year. The Armenian Assembly of
America (Assembly) congratulates Nikol Pashinyan and the citizens of Armenia, and
is invigorated by the future in store for the nation.

“Armenians living in Armenia and around the world should
take great pride in the country’s successful elections. Since Armenia’s Velvet
Revolution began last April, my heart has been full watching Armenians from all
walks of life engage politically, make demands of their government, and spur
progress towards a truly representative democracy. I look forward to continuing
to work with Prime Minister Pashinyan, other Members of Congress, and the
Armenian people as we strengthen Armenia’s democracy and our nations’ ties,” Congressional
Caucus on Armenian Issues Co-Chair Congresswoman Jackie Speier told the
Armenian Assembly.

“There was a remarkable change in Armenia and at the
ballot box yesterday. The way Armenia conducts itself going forward has changed,
and we have the Armenian citizens and their political will for a fully free,
just, and equal nation to thank. Yesterday’s elections marked an important step
forward towards establishing a stronger and more robust democratic framework
for Armenia, which stands in sharp contrast to the bordering hostile nations of
Azerbaijan and Turkey whose governments’ corruption and unjust imprisonment of
journalists worsen by the day. Armenia represents hope, and the Armenian
Assembly of America will do everything in its capacity to foster this courageous
optimism and work with the United States Government to strengthen not only the
hope but the prosperity of Armenia,” stated Armenian Assembly Co-Chairs Anthony
Barsamian and Van Krikorian.

With initial results released, the United States
Embassy to Armenia stated: “Congratulations to the Armenian people on a
successful election yesterday!”

“The winners in yesterday’s elections were clearly
the people of Armenia, who brought good spirit and energy to this election,” said
Peter Osusky, Special Co-ordinator and leader of the short-term Organization
for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) observer mission. “Democracy
cannot proceed without trust, so I am pleased that broad public trust was the
central characteristic of this election. Now that voters have delivered their
message, it is up to the political leadership in Armenia to ensure that this
momentum is maintained, and further reforms are implemented to fully
consolidate the positive assessment we are making today.”

During the press conference, Osusky added that the
observers praised the “open atmosphere” during the political campaigns that
enabled real substantive debate. “Members of our own team noted with regard to
the leaders’ debate held last week that they would like to see similar debates
in their own countries,” Osusky said.

“Our assessment of these elections highlights that
fundamental freedoms were respected, along with many other positives,” said
Ambassador Urszula Gacek, Head of the election observation mission from the
OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights.

Published in the initial report of the OSCE Office
for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), the OSCE Parliamentary
Assembly (OSCE PA), the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE)
and the European Parliament (EP), observers affirmed that “election day
proceeded calmly and free of pressure on or intimidation of voters, and voting,
counting, and tabulation were assessed positively by almost all observers.”

“These elections were very well organized, with
minimum irregularities and free of pressure on voters. I am very happy that, as
a result, public trust in the electoral process was high,” said Heidi Hautala,
Head of the delegation from the European Parliament. “We congratulate the
Armenian authorities and participants in these elections and encourage the
government and the National Assembly to further improve the legislation ahead
of future elections.”

According to the preliminary election results
released by the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan’s
My Step Alliance won 70.1% of the votes; the Prosperous Armenia Party won 8.2%;
and Bright Armenia won 6.3%.

Other parties and blocs running for the elections
failed to meet the 5% threshold to make it into the 101-seat National Assembly
with the Republican Party (HHK) scoring 4.7%; the ARF-Dashnaktsutyun party with
3.9%; Menk Alliance with 2%; Sasna Tsrer Party with 1.81%; Rule of Law Party
with 1%; Citizen’s Decision Party with 0.68%; Christian-Democratic Renaissance
Party with 0.5%; and National Progress Party with 0.33% of the votes.

Having won a majority of the seats in parliament,
Pashinyan has a strong mandate to continue the path of political and economic
reforms ushered in by Armenia’s own Velvet Revolution.

Established in 1972, the Armenian Assembly of
America is the largest Washington-based nationwide organization promoting
public understanding and awareness of Armenian issues. The Assembly is a
non-partisan, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt membership organization.

Azerbaijani press: Armenian POW asks acting PM to release hostages upon "all to all" principle

26 November 2018 20:13 (UTC+04:00)

Baku, Azerbaijan, Nov. 26

Trend:

Armenian prisoner of war, soldier Arsen Baghdasaryan, has sent an appeal to acting Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan for releasing prisoners of war and hostages upon "all to all" principle, the Azerbaijani State Commission for Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing People said in a message on Nov. 26.

Baghdasaryan was detained in Azerbaijan’s Aghdam district while trying to make a provocation on the contact line of Azerbaijani and Armenian troops, and was sentenced by Ganja Heinous Crimes Court to 15 years in prison.

Baghdasaryan asked the Azerbaijani State Commission for Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing People to make his appeal public.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.

I don’t know from where the [former ruling] RPA [Republican Party of Armenia] has decided that our government has decided to tax those heading for work abroad, and then it decided that, as a result of its demands, the government waived that idea.

Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Thursday stated the aforesaid during his talk with the residents of Martuni town, and within the framework of the My Step alliance’s campaign rallies for the upcoming snap parliamentary election in Armenia.

In his words, no decision can be taken without the Prime Minister.

Also, he called on the Martuni residents who are working abroad.

“We pin hopes also on you in making an economic revolution [in Armenia],” Pashinyan said. “Come [to Martuni], make investments, create jobs so that people don’t emigrate [from Armenia], [so] that we uproot poverty in Armenia.

“The working people have no right to be poor. There shall not be a hunger-stricken man in Armenia.”

Armenian-American entrepreneur, Reddit and Initialized Co-founder Alexis Ohanian has visited the Armenia! exhibition at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.

“Feeling even more inspired for Monday’s announcement.

Brought the family to the The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York for the #ARMENIA! Exhibition today and Olympia Ohanian was as curious as ever.

That said, this collection was extensive and I learned a ton. Our people are tenacious, reverent, and entrepreneurial merchants of the world”, Ohanian said on Facebook.

Ohanian has been teasing a “secret project” regarding Armenia on his Facebook and Instagram for quite some time now.

“It’s almost time, my friends… Secret project unveiled tomorrow”, he said on Facebook.

“A secret project I’ve been working on is almost ready to share with you all”, he said, posting the Armenian flag.

Hint: It involves patience, persistence, and wisdom,” he said earlier on Facebook, posting a photo of men playing chess in Armenia from his earlier visit to the country, suggesting the project will be connected with chess.

Authorities that enjoy great trust must have an opponent, Armenian ex-Defense Minister Vigen Sargsyan told reporters on Sunday.

“The opposition is the strongest lever of the people towards the government,” he said.

According to him, the political calculation in the conduct of a hasty election is to ensure that the force headed by Nikol Pashinyan, using his high rating, receives enough votes so as not to share power with other forces.

“I will head the list. It will include both our friends who are members of the party, and a number of representatives of other parties or non-party candidates,” he noted.
