Los-Angeles based Unison Duet Music Production is holding a charity concert in Armenia to donate the proceeds of the event to the music school in the border village of Achajur in Armenia’s Tavush Province, Unison Duet’s co-founder, pianist Shushan Hakobyan told a news conference on Wednesday.

The concert scheduled to be held on 10 August, at 7pm, at Komitas Museum-Institute, is organized as part of the Keep Armenian Borders Spiritually Strong program, reports Panorama.am.

“This program has been implemented for the third year already. It is mainly focused on providing support to music schools in border villages. This year Achajur music school will open a violin class: violins and corresponding literature will be provided,” she said, adding the tuition fees for violin lessons will also be compensated.

Hakobyan said tenor Hovhannes Ayvazyan and flutist Tigran Gevorgyan have also confirmed their participation in the charity program. The students of the Achajur music school will perform during the concert as well.

Unison Duet co-founder, violinist, composer Ruben Aghiyan, in attendance of the conference, noted that the music school of the border village has 80 students. “We visited Achajur, got acquainted with the children, felt their enthusiasm and decided that we had to implement this program there. The school mostly offers folk instrument lessons, that is why we decided to open a violin class,” he said.

Honored Art Worker of Armenia, soprano Irina Zakyan, who has been participating in this charity campaign for three years, added that the concert program features Italian and Armenian songs.

Greens call on Parliament to recognise WWI deaths of Armenians in Turkey as genocide

Greens call on Parliament to recognise WWI deaths of Armenians in Turkey as genocide
by Emily Cooper

The Green Party is calling on New Zealand's Parliament to officially recognise the deaths of Armenians in Turkey during World War One as genocide.

But the issue is contentious. Some estimates put the number of deaths as high as 1.5 million

Turkey denies it was genocide and says the victims were war casualties. It says there was no systematic attempt to destroy the Christian Armenian people.

But Armenian Kiwis say it’s time for New Zealand to take a strong stance.

"We've seen history repeat itself on many occasions and this will continue if we don't recognise our past," Hoory Yeldizian, chairperson of the Armenian National Committee of New Zealand said.

Several countries have labelled it a genocide, including Holland, Germany and some Australian States. New Zealand hasn't.

But Green MP Gareth Huges plans to put forward a motion in Parliament to change that.

"I’m asking all of Parliament to support it. It has a link to our history," he told 1 NEWS.

At her post-Cabinet press conference today, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said New Zealand has always acknowledged a significant loss of life.

“When it comes to those issues around terminology and so on, those are issues that we have left for a reconciliation process for those parties that are involved,” she said.

Historians put down the first round-up of Armenians as beginning on April 24 1915; the day before the Gallipoli landings.

Experts say that historic link is exactly why New Zealand should call it a genocide.

"New Zealand soldiers recorded the genocide in their memoirs and in their diaries and then brought those stories back home with them," historian James Robins said.

A documentary, Intent to Destroy, will be screened in the New Zealand Parliament theatrette tonight and visiting experts and Armenian Community members will hold discussions following the screening.

Turkish press: Historic church in Turkey’s Şanlıurfa undergoing restoration

ANADOLU AGENCY
ŞANLIURFA, Turkey
Published22 hours ago

The historical Germuş Church in southeastern Turkey's Şanlıurfa, which is believed to be the birthplace of the Prophet Abraham, will soon be opened to tourism after some extensive renovation.

Located 10 kilometers northeast of the city center and on the edge of Germuş Mountain, the historical church has stood the test of time. The date of its construction date is not precisely known, as there are no inscriptions, but the church is estimated to be built at the beginning of the 19th century. The structure has a facade that rises on three pointed arches.

The historical church partly lost its original character due to alterations carried out at different times. It is only 5 kilometers away from Göbeklitepe, which is often described as "the cradle of human civilization." The area where the church is located stands out with various old buildings and tunnels.

The Haliliye District Governorship is carrying out a thorough restoration as part of its "Hidden History: Germuş" project, which falls under the "Tourism Routes and Smart Cities Financial Support Program" and is approved by Karacadağ Development Agency.

A new look

Haliliye District Governor Ali Yılmaz Told Anadolu Agency (AA) that they want to open Germuş Church for tourism and are working to that end.

Yılmaz added that they are working to give the church a beautiful appearance. "The renovation, cleaning, lighting and environmental management of the church will be carried out within the scope of the project. Hopefully, Germuş Church will gain a new look and make some contribution to the tourism sector. I congratulate those who worked for the success of this project," he said.

The Chairman of the Regional Tourist Guides Chamber, Müslüm Çoban noted that Armenians used to live in the surrounding area of the church. "The old houses and underground structures in the region should also be opened to tourism," he said.

Attractive for tourists

Çoban said that they believe that Germuş Church will especially draw the attention of foreign tourists. "Unfortunately, the building, which has not undergone maintenance in years, is badly damaged. In this respect, the renovation of the church is very important. It is a very good decision to open the church to tourism after the renovation. This region and its churches are important for Christians.

"There are two churches in the village but the smaller one is almost completely destroyed. The Armenian Church is still standing. If there is more than one church in one place, this indicates its importance. The opening of the church to tourism will attract the attention of many foreign tourists. More foreign tourists started to come here after Göbeklitepe was included in the UNESCO list. They will also visit Germuş Church. This means that tourists spend more time in the city. The region close to Göbeklitepe on the Mardin route will contribute a great deal to tourism. The history of the Region will come forth with more excavations carried out in the future," he added.

Göbeklitepe visitors

Casım Acar, who is the guardian of historical sites and Germuş Church, noted that they have been fighting people who tried to carry out illegal excavations in the region.

The plan to open the region for tourism was great news according to Acar. "Legends have it that the church was built in seven years with stones from these mountains. Our elders tell us that this village had an important place in the past. There are underground bazaars, tunnels and various structures here. Tourists, mostly foreigners, who come to Göbeklitepe come here first, but its state of disrepair is unfortunate. Hopefully, the restoration will revive its historical and cultural value," he said

Armenia Catholicos, President express condolences over Greece fire

PanArmenian, Armenia

PanARMENIAN.Net – Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II has sent a letter of condolences to Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Ieronymos II over the deadly wildfires sweeping through a Greek resort town, which killed at least 60 people.

In a letter of his own, President Armen Sarkissian addressed his Greek counterpart Prokopis Pavlopoulos to express his deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of those who perished and wished a quick recovery to the injured.

The Armenian Embassy in Greece said no Armenians were among the casualties of the wildfires.

The Embassy posted telephone numbers on Tuesday, July 24 and encouraged people to contact the embassy employees in case they had any information about Armenian citizens injured by the fire in Attica and other regions of Greece.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras cut short a visit to Bosnia on Monday and returned to Athens to preside over an emergency response meeting with fire chiefs and government officials.

In total at least 60 people died, Evangelos Bournous, the mayor of nearby Rafina-Pikermi, said.

It was unclear how many people remained unaccounted for as coastguard vessels combed beaches to find any remaining survivors, with military hospitals on full alert, a government spokesman said.

One of the youngest victims was thought to be a six-month-old baby who died of smoke inhalation, officials said. Of the 156 people injured, 11 were in intensive care, they added.

April war participants gather at Givernment building (video)

The participants of the April war were in front of the Government today. They were demanded justice to be restored and it to be written in their military papers that they were involved in the four-day war in April. Samvel Manukyan said that it was only mentioned that they performed combat duty.

“The difference is that they do not participate in the war. We demand to restore justice to towards all our guys, since those who have gone through a great deal of experience have a great potential,” Samvel Manukyan said.

They noted that even money had been demanded from the soldiers to record the fact. And the protest was not only for mentioning the participation in the war in the military paper, but also the experience of war to be taken into account.

The Prime Minister’s assistant Nairi Sargsyan and Serzh Siseryan, head of the Vice-Premier Tigran Avinyan’s office, left the administrative building to listen to the protesting youth. They went upstairs to the Government building to discuss the issue.

After the discussion, representatives of the government promised to present the problem to the Prime Minister, to discuss with the specialists and the Prime Minister and to solve the problem.

Asbarez: ANCA Seeks U.S.-Armenia Social Security Agreement

ANCA seeks Social Security Totalization Agreement with Armenia

Totalization Accord would Benefit Workers and Retirees who Divide their Careers between the U.S. and Armenia

WASHINGTON—The Armenian National Committee of America Monday called upon the Social Security Administration to explore a Social Security Totalization Agreement with Armenia eliminating the danger of double taxation of pension benefits and, more broadly, clarifying the obligations and entitlements of workers who divide their careers between the United States and Armenia.

In a July 16 letter to Social Security Administration Acting Commissioner Nancy Berryhill, ANCA Chairman Raff Hamparian noted that: “In addition to providing material benefits to workers and greater clarity for employers, such an agreement will strengthen the bonds between America and Armenia, fostering a more conducive environment for even closer commercial relations and more effective cooperation across a broad array of international challenges.” He added that the ANCA is: “particularly mindful of the mutual advantages that such an accord would hold for ex-pats and self-employed workers, and also in the areas of retirement, disability, and survivor benefits.”

The U.S. currently has a Social Security Totalization Agreement in force with more than two dozen nations, listed in date order: Italy (1978), Germany (1979), Switzerland (1980), Belgium (1984), Norway (1984), Canada ((1984), United Kingdom (1985), Sweden (1987), Spain (1988), France (1988), Portugal (1989), Netherlands (1990), Austria (1991), Finland (1992), Ireland (1993), Luxembourg (1993), Greece (1994), South Korea (2001), Chile (2001), Australia (2002), Japan (2005), Denmark (2008), Czech Republic (2009), Poland (2009), Slovak Republic (2014), and Hungary (2016). A Totalization Agreement is a convention between two countries preventing duplicate Social Security contributions for the same income – effectively eliminating dual coverage and dual contributions (taxes) for the same work. Generally speaking, such accords ensure that workers only need to pay social security taxes to one country.

The United States and the Republic of Armenia periodically convene the U.S.-Armenia Joint Economic Task Force (USATF) and have negotiated a broad range of economic accords, including a Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA), an Agreement on Trade Relations, an Investment Incentive Agreement, and a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT). Armenia has been designated as a beneficiary country under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) program, under which a range of Armenian exports are eligible for duty-free entry to the United States. Armenia joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2003, and was granted Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) status in 2005.

In addition to a Social Security Totalization Agreement, the ANCA is encouraging the Administration to negotiate a long overdue bilateral Double Tax Treaty to eliminate dual taxation, and – longer term – a U.S.-Armenia Free Trade Agreement.

Text of ANCA Letter to Social Security Administration Acting Commission Berryhill

Dear Commissioner Berryhill:
I am writing to share our interest in helping American and Armenian workers realize the considerable economic, cultural, and social benefits of a Social Security Totalization Agreement between the United States and the Republic of Armenia.

As an organization representing Americans of Armenian heritage – many with strong family, business, and other ties to Armenia – we are particularly interested, first and foremost, in eliminating the danger of dual Social Security taxation, and also filling gaps in the benefit protection of employees who have divided their careers between the U.S. and Armenia. We are particularly mindful of the mutual advantages that such an accord would hold in the areas of retirement, disability, and survivor benefits.

As you know, many friendly countries, like Armenia, with vibrant diaspora communities in the United States, have such agreements, among them Italy, Ireland, Greece, Poland, and South Korea. In addition to providing material benefits to workers and greater clarity for employers, such an agreement will strengthen the bonds between America and Armenia, fostering a more conducive environment for even closer commercial relations and more effective cooperation across a broad array of international challenges.

Our organization looks forward to engaging with the Social Security Administration and our many friends across the Legislative and Executive branches of government in support of a Social Security Totalization Agreement with Armenia. We would welcome the opportunity to meet with you and your team to start the process toward a finalized and fully functioning agreement.

Sincerely,
Raffi Haig Hamparian
Chairman

Armenia in contact with Red Cross to ensure safe return of villager from Azeri captivity

Panorama, Armenia

The Armenian Defense Ministry has established a direct contact with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to secure a safe return of the Armenian villager held captive in Azerbaijan, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Tigran Balayan told a briefing on Monday.

The official confirmed that Armenian citizen Karen Ghazaryan, who ended up in the Azerbaijani territory in still unknown circumstances, is suffering from mental problems, due to which he has not served in the Armenian army.

He stressed all the necessary measure are being taken through the Red Cross.

“Works are also being carried out in other directions to ensure the return of our citizen to Armenia as quickly and safely as possible. I cannot report any progress in the issue at the moment,” Balayan said.

Earlier on Monday, the Armenian Police refuted the Azerbaijani disinformation suggesting their troops thwarted an alleged sabotage infiltration attempt by the Armenian side at the Gazakh region and held captive an Armenian “saboteur” identified as Karen Ghazaryan.

Ashot Aharonyanm, the head of the Information and Public Relations Department of the Armenian Police, revealed that Ghazaryan (b. 1984) is a resident of bordering Berdavan village of Armenia’s Tavush Province, who has not served in the Armenian army due to health problems and has been registered in a medical facility since 2013.

The police said the circumstances of how the villager ended up in the Azerbaijani territory are being investigated.

The Armenian Defense Ministry officially announced that Ghazaryan is not serving in and has never been drafted to the Armenian army, according to a Facebook post by Spokesman Artsrun Hovhannisyan.
