Music: Renowned violinist Sergey Khachatryan to open Yerevan int’l music festival

World-famous Armenian violinist Sergey Khachatryan will open the 12th Yerevan International Music Festival on 10 September.

Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall is set to host the solemn opening of the festival, Panorama.am was informed from the Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra’s official website.

The event is dedicated to the 2800th anniversary of Yerevan and to the 100 anniversary of the First Republic of Armenia.

The program of the opening concert features Violin Concerto by Johannes Brahms and Symphony No.9 by Ludwig van Beethoven. It will be conducted by Eduard Topchjan.

The artistic directors of the Yerevan music festival are Alexander Chaushian and Eduard Topchjan.

Born in Yerevan, Armenia, Sergey Khachatryan won First Prize at the VIII International Jean Sibelius Competition in Helsinki in 2000, becoming the youngest ever winner in the history of the competition. In 2005 he claimed First Prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels.

In recent seasons, Sergey has performed with such major orchestras as the Bamberger Symphoniker (Herbert Blomstedt and Jonathan Nott), Münchner Philharmoniker (James Gaffigan), Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra (Valcuha), Mariinsky Orchestra (Valery Gergiev) and Orchestre de Paris (Andris Nelsons and Gianandrea Noseda). He has also collaborated with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Radio Filharmonisch Orkest, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Orchestre National de France, London Symphony, London Philharmonic, Philharmonia Orchestra, NHK Symphony and the Sydney and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras.

Sergey’s most recent appearances in the US were with the Seattle Symphony (Ludovic Morlot), Los Angeles Philharmonic (Morlot) and National Symphony Orchestra Washington (Vasily Petrenko). He has also visited the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra and San Francisco Symphony as well as the Ravinia, Blossom and Mostly Mozart Festivals.

YEREVAN, JULY 9, ARMENPRESS. The congress of the Supreme Spiritual Council will be convened at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin on July 10 to discuss the recent developments, Priest Vahram Melikyan, director of the press service of the Mother See, told Armenpress.

Asked whether it’s an extraordinary session, he said representatives of Armenian dioceses abroad are in Armenia on the sidelines of the pan-Armenian youth meeting, some of them are also members of the Supreme Spiritual Council. “Therefore a decision was made to convene a congress of the Supreme Spiritual Council”, he said.

Priest Vahram Melikyan confirmed that the protesting citizens are still in the territory of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. Asked whether the Church takes any steps, he said at the moment the Church doesn’t take any action.

Earlier on July 6 protesters entered the headquarters of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin demanding the resignation of Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II. They were acting in an unacceptable manner.

“They are unable to listen to the calls of clergymen to stop such unacceptable and condemnable behavior”, Priest Vahram Melikyan said on Facebook. The protesters are still in the area and even have installed tents across the Church.

Latin American and European football stars came together  in Armenia’s capital Yerevan on July 8 for a Legends Match.

Participating in the match were Rivaldo, Hernán Crespo, Luis Figo Gabriel Batistuta, Dida, Cafu, Ivan Zamorano, Juliano Belletti, Serginho, Youri Djorkaeff, Jari Litmanen, Hristo Stoichkov, Demetrio Albertini, Ludovic Giuly, Kakha Kaladze, Ryan Giggs and others.

Armenia’s long-time goalkeeper Roman Berezovsky and legendary footbller Khoren Hovhannisyan played for the European team managed by Paolo Maldini. Ronaldo took charge of the Latin American team.

Figo scored the opener in the 7th minute, but it was to be cancelled by Batistuta a minute later. Javier Saviola and De Rosario scored in the 53rd and 61st minutes respectively to give a two-goal lead to Latin America.

Youri Djorkaeff’s stunning goal in the 64th minute was unable to save the Europeans from defeat as De Rosario and Beebto added two more close to the end of the match to make it 5-2.

The fixture was organized by Russia-based Armenian businessman Arthur Soghomonyan – the owner of the Armenian Yerevan FC (previously Pyunik).

Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan was watching the match.

 

World Cup 2018. Why do referees change their decision 16 times?

The referees have applied for help to the new system of video-replays 26 times during the group stage in football championship in Russia, Globo Esporte newspaper reports.

The referees personally have watched 16 times the disputable parts, and 10 times they have been prompted by electronic contact assistants. Chief referees changed their initial decision 16 times. They mostly viewed episodes related to the 11m stroke – 17 times.

Enrique Casserre has frequently asked for help from the new system from the game-makers- 4 times.

Sarkissian-Pompeo courtesy call possible in Washington D.C. – Armenian presidential office says

According to a local media report, Armenia’s President Armen Sarkissian will pay a courtesy call on US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on June 29 in the State Department in Washington D.C.

ARMENPRESS asked Sarkissian’s Office to confirm the report. “A courtesy call is possible”, the president’s office replied.

RFE/RL’s Armenian service – Azatutyun – reported citing Reuters that Armenian President Armen Sarkissian will have a meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Washington D.C.

The Armenian President is in the US to take part in the annual Folklife Festival of the Smithsonian Institution, which will feature Armenian cultural events.

Armenia’s occupation policy deprives it of regional cooperation, Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Mahmud Mammad-Guliyev said.

Mammad-Guliyev made the remarks during a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) in Yerevan.

“While delivering a speech at the meeting in Yerevan, Mammad-Guliyev stressed that the military conflict and the continuing occupation do not allow to fully use the regional trade and economic potential,” Hikmet Hajiyev, spokesman of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, told Trend.

Mammad-Guliyev added that Armenia’s continuation of occupation of the Azerbaijani territories eventually deprive Armenia of regional cooperation in trade, investment, transport, energy and other spheres.

He said that the states of the region should build regional cooperation and trade relations on the basis of the territorial integrity of each state, respect for the sovereignty and norms and principles of international law.

Mammad-Guliyev noted that the continuation of the occupation of Azerbaijan’s lands is regrettable reality, adding that it is important to correctly approach all issues and call problems by their names.

The deputy foreign minister added that Azerbaijan doesn’t have any claims to anyone, and stressed that the country, on the contrary, is striving for mutually beneficial cooperation to provide environment with stability and good-neighborly relations.

During his speech, Mammad-Guliyev focused on the issues of reforms necessary for BSEC, development of sectoral cooperation aimed at getting the result.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.

The Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technologies of Armenia Ashot Hakobyan and the Italian Ambassador to Armenia Vincenzo Del Monaco discussed today prospects of Armenian-Italian cooperation in various sectors of the economy of Armenia. According to the press service of the Armenian Ministry of Transport, Ashot Hakobyan stressed the importance of the involvement of Italian leading companies in various programs implemented in Armenia.

The Minister expressed satisfaction with the participation of Italian speciaists in the road consturction in Armenia. Hakobyan mentioned the improtance of their participation int he upcoming projects of road construction. The Ambassador in turn expressed readiness to exert all the efforts for enlarging economic ties between the two countries. According to him, the feedback from Italian specialists about Armenia is so positive that a lot of companies have expressed intention to invest in the Armenian economy, participating in implementaion of various economic programs.

To note, according to the Armenian Statistics trade turnover between Armenia and Italy totaled $200 mln in 2017 versus $160,6 mln in 2016. The export totaled $37mln, import $163 mln.

Preliminary investigation of criminal case initiated on violence used against minors in Erebuni administrative district completed

Preliminary investigation of the criminal case initiated on violence used against minors in Ayvazovski Street on April 20 was completed in the Investigative Division of Erebuni and Nubarashen administrative districts of Yerevan Investigative Department of the RA Investigative Committee, charge was pressed against 4 people.

Through preliminary investigation actual data were obtained on the allegation that on April 20, 2018 at about 13:00 a group of people used violence against minors protesting in front of Ayvazovski 29, Yerevan.

Particularly, the protesting minors blocked the right carriageway of the street when a car of “Toyota Corolla» make approached them. A row erupted between the driver, passengers and the minors during which violence were used against minors hitting them with hands and feet on different parts of their bodies.

Besides, the driver of the car of “Toyota Corolla» make hit the resident of Yerevan, minor born in 2001 with a blackjack which he had taken out of the car.

On the base of the obtained sufficient evidence charge was pressed against 4 people; against S. Hakobyan according to the Part 4 of the Article 258 of RA Criminal Code, G. Azaryan according to the Points 1 and 5 of the Part 3 of the Article 258 of RA Criminal Code, S. Baghdasaryan and V. Mkhitaryan according to the Point 1 of the Part 3 of the Article 258 of RA Criminal Code. Detention was chosen as a pretrial measure against them.

The criminal case with the bill of indictment was sent to prosecutor supervising the legality of preliminary investigation.

Note; Everyone charged with alleged crime offence shall be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law.

Pashinyan and Putin Meet Ahead of World Cup

MOSCOW—Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Wednesday arrived in the Russian capital to attend the opening ceremony of the 2018 World Cup, before which he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, his second meeting with the Russian leader since taking office on May 8.

The focus of the meeting was strengthening relations between Armenia and Russia, both viewing the other as a strategic partner. Pashinyan said the fact that this was his second meeting with Putin in one month, attests to the important place Russia occupies for the Armenian government.

He assured Putin that some of the agreements that were reached during their meeting on May 14 are already being implemented in Armenia and expressed hope for continued opportunities to discuss matters of mutual importance—economy, politics, regional stability—in person.

“Everybody knows that the scope of our relations [with Russia] is rather broad and there is much to be discussed in terms of the economy, politics and the region. Of course, we hope for a positive and constructive dialogue and we have made sure that it is such on our end,” said Pashinyan.

Putin emphasized the critical role Russia plays as Armenia’s leading trade partner.

“Given the strategic nature of our relations and the great scope of cooperation in different areas, I think meetings between the two nations are warranted. The first thing I would like to note is that Russia continues to confidently preserve its leading position in terms of trade with Armenia. Last year trade turnover between our countries increased by over 30 percent, and the growth continues this year as well,” said Putin.

He emphasized that the trade centers on Armenian agricultural exports to Russia, adding that Armenia’s membership in the Eurasian Economic Union has played a positive role in advancing relations between the two countries.
