YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 10, ARMENPRESS. Lebanon is still in heavy social and economic situation, the country is facing a financial-economic crisis.

In an interview to ARMENPRESS, Editor-in-Chief of the Lebanese-based Azdag daily Shahan Gantaharyan said that the country is in difficult economic, social situation. “There are price increases everywhere. There are first essentials, but their prices are not affordable, and this leads to crisis. Unemployment, inflation, the drastic decline of the Lebanese currency have created problems. All these has also affected the Armenian community. The agenda of the community has completely changed. Helping the needy ones is the priority”, he said.

The Catholicosate, the Diocese, the political parties operating in the community and various charity unions are trying to provide the most needy ones with assistance. Former Lebanese-Armenians, who have settled in different countries during the civil war, are also providing support. Overcoming the current crisis, helping the needy families and implementing anti-crisis programs are in the agenda of the Lebanese-Armenian community.

“This has also been supplemented by the pandemic. Although currently the hospitals are not so full of COVID-19 patients, the country’s resources are less and the assistance programs are not so comprehensive. All these is leading to a difficult condition”, Shahan Gantaharyan said.

In addition to social problems, the Armenian community is also facing a difficulty of keeping stable the activity of local structures, press and national institutions. There is a problem of preserving the Armenian educational centers. Due to the socio-economic problems, families are just unable to pay for their children’s education. Gantaharyan said that the Armenian community structures from different countries are also trying to help.

“The press is also facing a difficulty. There is a problem of preserving the orphanages and clinics, and the financial resources are lacking”, he added.

This crisis led to complaints among the people, and these complaints are demonstrated by protests, like it happened in the beginning of the year. Those representing the field of public transport held a three-day protest, urging to revise the fuel prices. Protests are also sometimes taking place against banks, government structures, but they are not so large.

“It seems people have been disappointed. Parliamentary elections are expected in May. There are civil state demands to change Lebanon’s community system, but I think this will happen immediately as it’s a rooted system and it will lead to shocks. It must be agreed upon and be carried out phase by phase. Lebanon is soon entering into en election campaign in these conditions”, Gantaharyan said.

Asked whether there are plans among Lebanese-Armenians to leave the country, the Editor-in-Chief of Azdag said that there is such a tendency, people have just been deprived of the opportunity to use their bank funds. This is the main obstacle to moving. According to him, most of them also consider Armenia in the context of leaving Lebanon.

YEREVAN, 11 FEBRUARY, ARMENPRESS. The indescribable efforts made by Armenian businessmen last year have significantly contributed to the recovery of the Armenian economy following the huge economic depression of 2020, ARMENPRESS reports Coordinator of the Eurasian Expert Club, political analyst Aram Safaryan said at a press conference, presenting the results of the new research of the Eurasian Expert Club on the Armenian economy.

The Expert Club, with the help of its leading economists, has presented a new, the 7th study on the Armenia's economy in the context of Armenia's membership to the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU).

In particular, Doctor of Economics, Professor Tatul Manaseryan found out in his research that after a severe 8% decline in 2020, the Armenian economy is showing signs of recovery.

According to the coordinator of the Club Aram Safaryan, Manaseryan singles out 4 main factors that contributed to the 5.8% economic growth in 2021. The first of them is the efforts of the Armenian businessman.

"Armenian businessmen have made indescribable efforts to rectify the situation after the 8% economic downturn in 2020, to record growth, thus providing a huge moral and financial benefit to our country. That is why we would like to express our words of praise to the representatives of the Armenian business field, who mainly produce finished goods and export them abroad. This is really a bravery,"the coordinator of the Eurasian Expert Club stressed.

The second important factor was the ban on the import of goods from Turkey in 2021, which stimulated the development of local products to replace imports.

"That one year was enough for the local producers, who replaced the import, to breathe and try to stand on their own two feet. You also noticed a lot of small and large household goods in stores, which have started to be produced in Armenia when the Armenian consumer got the opportunity to buy local products instead of those imported from Turkey," says Aram Safaryan.

The third factor contributing to economic growth, according to the economic study, is Armenia's membership to the EEU, and the fourth was the removal of many restrictions initiated by the government, which were introduced in 2020 to fight the coronavirus.

The Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin calls on all countries involved in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement, first of all, the co-chairing states of the OSCE Minsk Group, sister churches and religious institutions, specialized international organizations to strictly respond to the undisguised cultural genocide implemented by Azerbaijan. ARMENPRESS reports the statement published on the Facebook page of the Mother See reads as follows,

“Recently the authorities of Azerbaijan, in the person of the Minister of Culture, made another anti-Armenian initiative.

According to the statement of the latter “Working Group of professionals of Caucasian Albanian history and architecture” has been set up, comprised of local and foreign experts, the aim of which is to remove “the false traces left by Armenians” from the so-called the Caucasian Albanian religious temples.

The Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin strictly condemns this initiative of the Azerbaijani authorities and qualifies it as anti humanitarian and anti-civilizational activity with manifestation of hostility and hate against Armenia, Artsakh and Armenian people.

The Armenian identity of Christian sanctuaries under control of Azerbaijan is a scientifically proven reality and can’t become a subject of dispute within the framework of reasonable and objective thinking.

The Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin calles on all countries included in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement, first of all, the co-chairing states of the OSCE Minsk Group, sister churches and religious institutions, international professional organizations to strictly respond to the fact of undisguised cultural genocide implemented by Azerbaijan in order to stop and prevent such expressions of vandalism.”

“Who needs Lukashenka?” – Yerevan responds to Belarusian President’s anti-Armenian statement

President Lukashenka’s criticism of Armenia

Another scandalous statement by the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenka has become the main topic of discussions in Armenia. His words – “Armenia has nowhere to run. Do you think anyone cares about them?” were discussed both on social media and in parliament. Press secretary of the Foreign Ministry Vahan Hunanyan also commented on it:

“We are convinced that the peculiar geopolitical analysis of the President of Belarus aims to serve, first of all, his own domestic political agenda and has nothing to do with Armenia and its foreign policy”.

  • “Russia ousted the West from the South Caucasus” – former co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group
  • IRI polls in Armenia: “Turkey and Azerbaijan are a threat to Armenia’s security”
  • What is the right strategy for Armenia, stuck between the foreign policy ambitions of Russia and Turkey?

“Armenia has nowhere to run. Do you think anyone cares about them? They have already seen it… Nikol Vovayevich [Pashinyan, Prime Minister of Armenia] saw it [meaning the defeat in the war in Karabakh].”

This was the answer of the President of Belarus to a question about the prospects for the Russia-Belarus union state and the accession of other countries of the former USSR to it in an interview with Russian journalist Vladimir Solovyov.

“Azerbaijan is out of this cohort, we made a lot of mistakes there. This is a separate conversation. And, of course, Turkey very seriously supports Azerbaijan. Roads, gas, oil go through Turkey… And Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan, due to their economic necessity, I think that they will also join”, Alexander Lukashenka said.

A member of the ruling Civil Contract faction, Vagharshak Hakobyan, said that the statements of the President of Belarus are “inadmissible” and are not appropriate for the head of state:

“The leader of the partner state [Armenia and Belarus are members of the Eurasian Economic Union and the military bloc of the Collective Security Treaty Organization operating under the auspices of Russia] has no right to express such thoughts to other partner countries. And I want to remind you who needed Armenia during the recent events in Kazakhstan. I am sure that Mr. Lukashenka understands better than anyone who needs the Republic of Armenia”.

  • CSTO Security Council meeting: threat to Kazakhstan or the CSTO?
  • “CSTO military contingent went to Kazakhstan, but never came to Armenia”

Another member of the ruling party, deputy Rustam Bakoyan also commented on the matter:

“Who needs Lukashenka? I think this rhetorical question was asked by his people. And the processes that took place in this country are a clear assessment of the stage of his reign, the state that he kept his country in and what came of it.

According to another member of the ruling party, Hovik Agazaryan, “Lukashenko and Margarita Simonyan [editor-in-chief of the Russian RT agency] are doing the Russian authorities a disservice by such actions”.

Russia and Belarus signed an agreement on the creation of a union state back in 1999. It provides for unified legislation and parliament, a common currency and state symbols.

After the presidential elections in Belarus in 2020, the results of which caused massive protest, Russia began to speed up negotiations on the formation of a union state. Negotiations on integration intensified even more after Lukashenka managed to suppress protests against his power.

In the begining of 2022, Lukashenka again made a statement about the union state:

“I must tell you that this year will not be easy. The world will change in a major way. The world will change in terms of uniting peoples and states into unions. It will not only be difficult for states like us to survive alone, it will be impossible”.

And a few days after that, speaking at the CSTO online summit, Lukashenka said that this military bloc should be strengthened without looking at the West or individual Western states:

“If we keep looking around, we will break our necks. Therefore, you need to attend to your own issues and see your own safety. When they have the slightest problem, they do not think about democracy, do not look back at us, but act in accordance with their own interests. We need to take that into account too”.

According to political observer Hakob Badalyan, Armenian society is inspired by sharp responses in the spirit of “Lukashenko, who are you? We are the masters of our country”. But he believes that Armenia gave rise to statements similar to Lukashenka’s attack:

“Let’s admit that the course of our country over the past three decades, unfortunately, has given and is giving Lukashenka or Lukashenkas the opportunity to say what they say”.

Badalyan says that nothing will change with the answers given to Lukashenka’s statement, instead of words, things in the country should be put in order, only this will change the image of Armenia, its potential and attitude towards it.

“Let’s treat not treat our state as a “laid table” that lacks a toastmaster, but as a complex organism in need of functional harmonization”.

According to Hakob Badalyan, “Lukashenko is here today, he will be gone tomorrow”, and in Armenia they should understand what is happening with the country now and what it should be like tomorrow.

Turkish press: Watchdog hikes Turkey’s 2022 gas consumption view to over 60 bcm

Turkey’s energy watchdog has raised its 2022 natural gas consumption forecast by 20% compared to a year ago, according to a decree published in the Official Gazette on Friday.

The Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) estimates around 60.4 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas will be consumed in the country throughout 2022.

It had a forecast of 50.8 bcm for 2021 but gas consumption is estimated to have risen to an all-time high of 61 bcm.

It stemmed from a record demand that forced the country to step up purchases on the spot market and accelerate efforts to renew long-term contracts expiring this winter and to top its supply with liquefied natural gas (LNG).

A drought last year curtailed hydroelectric power, putting idled gas power plants back online and driving Turkey’s consumption, just as prices rocketed in Europe.

One of the largest gas importers in Europe, Turkey depends on pipeline gas from Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran as well as LNG imports from Nigeria, Algeria and spot markets.

Plans to cover up to a quarter of its consumption from its Black Sea discovery from 2027 are also expected to strengthen its hand in future negotiations.

The daily peak consumption hit a record of 288 million cubic meters on Jan. 20, just a day before Iran announced it cut gas supplies for 10 days, citing technical failures.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan late Wednesday said full gas flow from Iran would return in 10 to 15 days.

The sudden stoppage forced Turkey to impose restrictions to limit gas use and cut electricity supplies for industrial sites, prompting some manufacturers to halt production.
