Yerevan school named after fallen hero Gevorg Arshakyan

Armenia –

The Yerevan City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a decision to name Basic School No. 22 in the Armenian capital after Senior Lieutenant Gevorg Arshakyan, who was killed in the 2020 war in Artsakh.

The petition was submitted by the school administration after being approved by school students, teachers and parents.

Even though Gevorg had finished his two years of compulsory military service, he joined the Artsakh army as a volunteer immediately after Azerbaijan waged a war against Artsakh on September 27.

The senior lieutenant lost his life in the defense of Shushi on November 7.

He was posthumously awarded the First Class Combat Cross Order of Armenia and the Medal for Combat Service of Artsakh.

CivilNet: A new road connecting Armenia to Nagorno-Karabakh

CIVILNET.AM

The Lachin corridor is the only connection between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. Before the Second Karabakh War, three main roads connected Armenia and Karabakh. But, one in the south, running along the Iranian border, was lost after an Azerbaijani military offensive. The second was handed over to Azerbaijan in line with the November 9, 2020 agreement. In the end-of-war agreement, Armenia also agreed to eventually hand over the Lachin corridor to Azerbaijan. Now, a second alternative route is being constructed. However, what do local residents think of all this? Will this benefit the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh? And, what will happen to the Armenians currently living in communities within the Lachin corridor.

Turkish press: ‘Azerbaijan retaking Karabakh territories vital for regional stability’

Deputy Foreign Minister Yavuz Selim Kıran speaking in Shusha, Azerbaijan, June 15, 2022 (AA Photo)

The end of the Armenian occupation in the Karabakh region is not only important because Azerbaijan regained its lands and displaced can return but also for regional peace and stability, Deputy Foreign Minister Yavuz Selim Kıran said Wednesday.

At a conference on the occasion of the first anniversary of the Shusha Declaration signed between Turkey and Azerbaijan, Kıran said: “The ending of the occupation does not only mean Azerbaijan rejoining its lands, only our displaced brothers returning to their homes but at the same time presents a valuable opportunity for our region to turn into a belt of peace and stability on a large scale.”

Raising relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan to the level of an alliance, the Shusha declaration was inked in a ceremony attended by the two countries' presidents in the Azerbaijani city of Shusha. The Shusha Declaration focuses on defense cooperation and establishing new transportation routes, affirming the two armies' joint efforts in the face of foreign threats, and the restructuring and modernization of their armed forces.

“While realizing this success, it is clear that the international community must rethink some issues. In fact, the end of the occupation in Karabakh could be the result of diplomacy failing. Because for years, the United Nations in ignoring their own decisions as well as the OSCE Minsk Group established for the solution of this problem, encouraged no solution but rather the continuation of the status quo,” Kıran underlined indicating that for years these institutions have not facilitated a way out of the dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

“President (Ilham) Aliyev seeing that these diplomatic efforts do not bear fruits and gaining this success in 44 days is a milestone.”

Turkey was a key backer of Azerbaijan during the 44-day Karabakh war between Baku and Yerevan, which erupted on Sept. 27, 2020, and ended with a Russian-brokered cease-fire on Nov. 10. During the faceoff that started in September 2020, Azerbaijan liberated several cities and 300 settlements and villages that were occupied by Armenia for nearly three decades. The peace agreement is celebrated as a triumph in Azerbaijan.

After the conflict ended, Azerbaijan launched a massive reconstruction initiative in the liberated Karabakh region.

Speaking on joint projects between Turkey and Azerbaijan, Kıran added: "With the capacity, we displayed on the table and on the field, we try to put into effect even greater steps through diplomacy to turn this victory into welfare for the region’s people, one step of which is the 3+3 platform." Kıran was referring to the six-nation platform comprising of Turkey, Russia, Iran, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia for permanent peace, stability and cooperation in the region, which Ankara has been calling for and seeing as a win-win initiative for all regional actors in the Caucasus.

Asbarez: Artsakh Blasts Aliyev, Says ‘Artsakh Republic Exists’

Artsakh State Minister Artak Beglaryan

Following more threats by President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, who said that discussion of the status of Karabakh will lead to more military aggression, Artsakh’s State Minister Artak Beglaryan said on Thursday that the Artsakh Republic exists based on international law.

“Yes, Nagorno-Karabakh does not exist, because there exists the Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) Republic, in accordance with international law, although not formally recognized at the international level,” said Beglaryan in a post on the Telegram social media platform.

“The Azerbaijani-Karabakh conflict has not been and will not be resolved until Azerbaijan takes into account the inalienable right of the indigenous people of Artsakh to self-determination,” asserted Beglaryan. “The issue of international recognition (hence, the status) of the Republic of Artsakh will be solved sooner or later, and Artsakh will never be part of Azerbaijan.”

The Artsakh official called Aliyev to task about the treatment of minorities in Azerbaijan, as is guaranteed by that country’s constitution, in conclusion, asking whether there are any Armenians allowed to live in the territories occupied by Azerbaijan as a result of the 2020 war.

YEREVAN, JUNE 15, ARMENPRESS. The new head coach of the Armenian national basketball team Rex Kalamian, who has nearly 30 years of NBA experience, says he has joined the Armenian team with a great hope and goals.

“We contacted the Armenian basketball players 2-3 months ago, trying to present them in advance what our training process will be like. We also worked with several Armenian basketball players weeks ago. The players are in a good shape”, he told reporters today.

Rex Kalamian said that at this moment the team is at a stage of understanding one another.

“I really believe that we have the potential through which we could win the European Championship for Small Countries. However, it’s important to know how the other teams are doing, as they all pass this preparation stage. I liked the basketball players who have joined the team from the domestic championship. Our task is not only to develop the Armenian basketball, but also to put it on a good ground”, he said.

Wording of so-called corridor unacceptable for us – Armenian PM

YEREVAN, JUNE 14, ARMENPRESS. In an interview to Al Jazeera, Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan touched upon the issue of opening of regional communications, stating that the wording of the so-called corridor in this context is unacceptable for Armenia.

The reporter asked what is Armenia’s approach and position over the “corridor” that is supposed to connect Azerbaijan and Ankara by passing through the territory of Armenia, and the PM said: “You know the wording, the narrative of so-called corridor is unacceptable for us, and it is red line for us. Because in our region, according to the trilateral statement, which was mentioned in the beginning of our conversation, we have one corridor in our region, and this is Lachin corridor connecting Nagorno Karabakh with Armenia. But we have another point in our trilateral statement which is about the opening of communications, meaning, for example, railways, roads, etc. And we are ready to and we are discussing that actually, to open regional communications both for Armenia and Azerbaijan with the respect of sovereignty and the laws of our countries”.

Honoring Our Brightest Stars: Homenetmen Embraces Young Heroes of Hrashq

Hrashq provides the Armenian special needs community the opportunity to participate in Homenetmen’s athletic program and competition events

BY KATY SIMONIAN

“You are stars and the world is watching you. By your presence you send a message to every village, every city, every nation. A message of hope. A message of victory.” Eunice Kennedy Shriver’s words echo through eternity and continue to create a ripple effect for families in America and across the world. As the founder of the Special Olympics, she shared her vision of inclusion with the world, opening hearts and minds to the powerful gifts of a community that had long been kept in the shadow.

Homenetmen Western US Region is a shining of example of an organization that has embraced the vision of the Special Olympics in the creation of Hrashq, a program for athletes with special needs, that empowers all participants to reach their full potential. With a unique coaching system, tailored for the needs of every child, Hrashq inspires all people by building skills and confidence in young athletes, providing them with socialization and inclusion opportunities, while combating the stigma often associated with certain disabilities.

For members, Hrashq, which means “Miracle,” is an opportunity to create a valuable resource of support for parents and children alike, as they meet the challenges of life with a grace and dignity that is inherent in the spirit of Homenetmen’s motto, “Elevate Yourself and Others with You.”

The story of Hrashq, began back in 2018, when founding member Dr. Nanor Kabakian joined a group of parents who sought to create an outlet for their children to participate in athletic activities and be part of an Armenian organization. Prior to this juncture, she served as the facilitator of the Armenian Parents Support Group of the Lanterman Regional Center, which unites parents who share the difficult journey of raising a child with special needs, offering presentations and invaluable resources to enable them to better advocate for their rights.

Homenetmen Hrashq participants at a previous year’s Navasartian Games

One fateful day three months prior to the Navasartian Games, she approached Homenetmen’s leaders with the prospect of having a booth at the Games. Their conversation led to a transformative idea – having athletes with special needs participate in the 43rd Navasartian Games on the occasion of the Homenetmen Centennial.  Without hesitation, Homenetmen’s Western Regional Executive Board gave the concept the green light, forming a committee whose mission it was to plan Hrashq’s first participation in the Navasartian Games by providing the athletes with all the accommodations needed to make their historic debut a success. Their mission was fulfilled, as the first group of Hrashq athletes participated in competitions and the Parade of Champions, a highlight of the annual Navasartian Closing Ceremonies.

“Our goal is to inspire our Armenian community to appreciate Hrashq, as we can learn so much from the perseverance of our young athletes and their families. Their dedication stands in alignment with Homenetmen’s guiding principles. The work we do helps all people and contributes to our shared belief in public service,” says Dr. Kabakian, who is a proud parent of a Hrashq athlete.

The program quickly jumped from 20 athletes to 50 and has benefited from the leadership of an Adaptive Physical Education Teacher, Dave Beard, who has created specific lesson plans for each individual student, a feat that sets Hrashq apart from other programs in its commitment to excellence. Athletes receive one-on-one support from volunteers, including parents, speech and language pathologists, occupational therapists, Homenetmen members, and AYF Sardarabad Pyunic Basketball Committee members. Hrashq also welcomes student volunteers from Armenian schools in the greater Los Angeles area, many of whom aspire to pursue careers in speech and physical therapy, as well as advocacy for children with physical and intellectual disabilities.

“In five short years and in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, Hrashq has continued to thrive under the gracious leadership of parents and Homenetmen members who are committed to ensuring the program’s success,” says Hagop Tufenkjian, Chairman of Homenetmen’s Regional Executive Committee. “We are proud of our Hrashq athletes and are grateful for their presence in the Homenetmen family,” he added.

One of the most influential figures to support Hrashq’s noble mission is State Senator Anthony J. Portantino, who secured a grant of $100,000 to support Homenetmen’s many programs including Hrashq.

As a champion of the Armenian community, Senator Portantino’s commitment was inspired by his own experiences. “Years ago, I took a friend’s son who had special needs to Disneyland and had the best time. While my daughter was running from ride to ride, my friend’s son stopped to appreciate the magic of every moment. It was a tremendously emotional experience that I can never forget and makes me smile when I think of it,” he says. “I get the same positive feelings from Hrashq and it’s so exciting to see it grow and touch so many people. It has been a pleasure and blessing to support the children of Hrashq. I can think of no better organization to get behind because the children and families are truly miraculous,” he added.

Perhaps the impact of Hrashq is best expressed in the words of one of its athletes, Nanor’s son, Aren Zakarian. His acrostic poem speaks to the heart of Homenetmen’s mission to preserve our tradition of public service. Below is Aren’s poem:

Hrashq

Hope is what everyone needs

Respect is what everyone deserves

Armenian is what we are

Special is what we feel

Human is how we should be treated

Quest for the best is what we seek

Aren wrote his poem when he was only nine years old. He is now 12 and thriving, as are so many Hrashq athletes who benefit from the program and most significantly, being part of an Armenian community that celebrates their achievements.

Hrashq athletes are not defined by their physical and intellectual disabilities. They are applauded for the unique light they bring to the world. Only the brightest stars can enlighten hearts and minds, as they replace fear with hope. They are more than champions. They are heroes who show us what is possible and inspire us with their bravery, strength and determination. Their smiles are a sign of true victory, as their presence in Hrashq has united so many families with a renewed faith in a community that has embraced them.

Hrashq and its extraordinary members will be celebrated at the 45th Navasartian Victory Ball on Sunday, June 26 at The Beverly Hilton, and will participate in the 2022 Navasartian Games and Closing Ceremonies which commence on Fourth of July weekend, July 1-3 at Los Angeles City College.

Hrashq’s mission of inclusion is gaining new ground, as athletes with special needs will compete with their neurotypical peers, breaking barriers and building bridges across our community at this year’s Navasartian Track and Field competition. It should be noted that many of the program’s volunteers are the same age as the athletes they work with, a poignant distinction that offers all children the opportunity to elevate one another through building friendships and gaining a more profound understanding of the human spirit.

With the recent announcement that Hrashq athletes will be represented in the Pan-Homenetmen competition taking place in Armenia this July, it is clear the future is bright and indeed victorious for all of our athletes.

Homenetmen’s ultimate victory is making sure that all Hrashq athletes walk through life with a deep sense of confidence that comes from knowing they are seen, heard, valued, admired and most of all, loved.

For more information about Hrashq and Homenetmen’s many programs, please visit the Navasartian Games website or call (323) 344-4300.

1-         Erdogan Expands Political Reach

            To France and Throughout Europe

            By Harut Sassounian

            Publisher, The California Courier

            www.TheCaliforniaCourier.com

I wrote last week about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s plans
to collect votes from Turkish Americans for his reelection next year
by opening an office in Washington for his ruling party (AKP) and
hiring his cousin, Dr. Halil Mutlu, as a registered lobbyist. Already,
Erdogan has scored an initial political success in the United States
with the victory of Turkish-American Dr. Mehmet Oz’s in the
Pennsylvania Republican primary for the U.S. Senate.

This week, I would like to report Pres. Erdogan’s similar political
efforts in France by planting Turkish moles in the French legislature.
This has been the long-term objective of Erdogan ever since 2010, when
he urged his compatriots in France, during his visit to Paris, to run
for political office.

Naturally, no one can object to Turks in France and the United States
to run for political office. However, when such political action is
prompted and supported by a foreign government, in this case Turkey,
and its autocratic leader, serious concerns are raised that these
Turkish politicians can become a tool in the hands of Erdogan to
export his despotic policies beyond Turkish borders and propagate
anti-Armenian positions.

Heeding Erdogan’s marching orders, Ali Gedikoglu, founder of the
Strasbourg-based Equality and Justice Party, “presented 50 candidates
in the 2017 [French] legislative elections,” Intelligence Online
reported. “Gedikoglu is also known to be a long-time close associate
of the Turkish foreign affairs minister and founding AKP member,
Mevlüt Çavusoglu.”

For the upcoming June 12 and 19, 2022 French Parliamentary elections,
the Turkish news website Medyaturk, in collaboration with the French
version of Turkish government-owned Anadolu Agency, has been promoting
three Turkish candidates: “French-Turkish dual citizens Celil Yilmaz
(for 5th constituency of Ain); Yalcin Ayvali (14th constituency of
Rhône); and Ramazan Calli (5th constituency of Saône-et-Loire),” a
candidate of the Union of French Muslim Democrats. All three are
“involved in the Strasbourg-based association Cojep (Conseil pour la
justice, l’égalité et la paix), whose name translates as council for
justice, equality and peace,” according to Intelligence Online.
Created in 1985, Cojep has an annual budget of 300,000 euros. It
“advocates for the interests of the Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ‘Turkish
Justice and Development Party’ or AKP, to which its leadership is
close.”

Candidate Celil Yilmaz is President of the Cojep association and
former town councilor for Nantua (east of France). Cojep’s director
Gedikoglu is an active denialist of the Armenian Genocide in the
European Parliament where he is registered as a lobbyist with the
Parliament’s Transparency Registry. He is also described as “the
driving force behind the AKP’s media presence and charity work in
France,” according to Intelligence Online.

Given the widespread recognition of the Armenian Genocide throughout
Europe, Turks who deny the Genocide become the laughing stock of
Europeans, just as in the United States, after both chambers of
congress and Pres. Biden recognized the Genocide. Turkish denials of
the Armenian Genocide are the equivalent of trying to prove that “the
earth is flat.”

Candidate Yilmaz was “indicted in 2018 by the Paris prosecutor’s
office for ‘incitement to hatred,’” according to Intelligence Online.
“Yilmaz demonstrated his capacity to rally people to his side when, in
just a few minutes via social media, he managed to gather a hundred
Turks to counter a pro-Kurdish demonstration in front of the Turkish
consulate in Lyon in January 2018.”

Intelligence Online revealed that “Yilmaz also arranged for Cojep
staff to meet with an official delegation from the Democratic Republic
of Congo [DRC] that had travelled to talk with senior AKP members at
its headquarters in Turkey in August 2021. The DRC party included
President Félix Tshisekedi’s brother Roger Tshisekedi. Yilmaz also
relies on Cojep’s Vice President for international relations, Sati
Arik, who is a substitute on the board of AKP’s women’s branch ‘AKP
Kadin Kollari.’ Arik, who hails from Strasbourg, is close to the
Turkish-German AKP Member of Parliament Zafer Sirakaya. According to
her biography on the party’s website, she writes reports on “Muslims
in France” for Sirakaya. The other two candidates, Ayvali and Calli,
only show their association with Cojep via social media, though Calli
is its local contact person for Montceau-les-Mines, eastern France.”

In addition to the United States and France, Erdogan has set up a
chain of lobbying groups throughout Europe. They consist of “Union of
European Turkish Democrats (Union des démocrates turcs européens)
created by the AKP in Brussels [Belgium] in 2003 to back Turkey’s
candidature to join the European Union. This entity has since become
the parent company of several micro-parties close to the AKP, such as
“Be.one” in Belgium, the Multicultural Law Party (Multicultural Recht
Partij) in the Netherlands and the Alliance for Innovation and Justice
(Bündnis für Innovation und Gerechtigkeit) in Germany,” according to
Intelligence Online.

This extensive Turkish lobbying effort should be confronted by
everyone, not just Armenians. Even though Turkey is a bankrupt
country, Pres. Erdogan, has chosen to use his country’s limited
financial resources to arm its military and disseminate Turkish
propaganda around the world.

2-         Dr. Oz Wins Republican PA Senate Primary, ANCA Calls for
Investigation

Dr. Mehmet Oz is now the presumptive GOP candidate for the open U.S.
Senate seat in Pennsylvania, per Politico. Former hedge fund CEO David
McCormick bowed out of the Republican primary which, while votes were
cast weeks ago, has been held in limbo by Oz’s razor-thin lead of
about 1,000 votes.

The Donald Trump-backed Oz declared himself the winner about 10 days
ago but, with the thin margin and votes still being counted, McCormick
understandably believed he could win.

Oz will face-off against Democratic nominee John Fetterman in November.

The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) called on May 10 for
a U.S. Department of Justice investigation into Pennsylvania Senate
candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz, amid growing alarm over Oz’s links to
Turkey’s dictator Recep Erdogan, his dual Turkey–U.S. citizenship, and
open association with Armenian Genocide deniers.

In a May 3 letter to the Department of Justice, ANCA Executive
Director Aram Hamparian expressed concern that Oz may be in violation
of the Foreign Agent Registration Act (FARA) of 1938 for his
endorsement agreement with Istanbul-based Turkish Airlines, through
which Oz provides “consulting services, certain media, and in-flight
film appearances.”

“Turkish Airlines is 49.13% owned by the Turkish Government.  FARA
filings show that Turkish Airlines has been a foreign principal since
at least 1975 and as recently as 2015,” asserted Hamparian.

Former U.S. Justice Department FARA unit official David Laufman told
The New York Post that an investigation into the matter is warranted.
“I think it would be appropriate for [the Justice Department] to
undertake logical, analytical, and investigative steps to determine
whether Dr. Oz acted as a public relations counsel or publicity agent
in the United States on behalf of Turkish Airlines,” Laufman
explained. “If he did, he likely would have an obligation to register
unless he qualified for an exemption.”

Hamparian outlined the full range of broader national security and
Armenian American community concerns in an op/ed in The Washington
Times. “For Americans of Armenian heritage—having spent the better
part of the past century working, successfully, to end U.S. cover-ups
of Turkey’s genocidal crimes—it would represent a betrayal of the
worst kind, a shameful rollback of America’s commitment to human
rights, to send to the U.S. Senate an ally of Erdogan, the world’s
foremost Armenian Genocide denier,” explained Hamparian.

He cited American Enterprise Institute’s Michael Rubin, who has argued
that “Oz’s dual citizenship—and his reluctance to renounce Turkish
citizenship—will keep the FBI and security managers up at night,”
adding that it’s “fair game to question Oz’s judgment embracing the
most reactionary elements in Turkish society.”

In an interview with Breitbart News, Hamparian argued “that Mehmet
Oz’s ties to Turkey put him “at odds” with putting the interests of
Pennsylvanians and Americans first.”.

3-         California’s Contemporary Artists from Joan and Jack Quinn
Family Collection             Makes Debut in Boston

WATERTOWN, Mass.—The Armenian Museum of America will present its
largest contemporary exhibition, On the Edge: Los Angeles Art 1970s –
1990s from the Joan and Jack Quinn Family Collection. Included are
Lita Albuquerque, John Altoon, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Lynda Benglis,
Vija Celmins, Gregory Wiley Edwards, Claire Falkenstein, Frank Gehry,
David Hockney, John M. Miller, Helmut Newton, Ed Ruscha, Andy Warhol,
and more.

Part of what makes the collection so unique is its foundation in
friendship between artist and collector. “Few individuals have left
such an indelible mark on the artistic landscape of Southern
California more than the Quinns,” said Rachel Wainwright who curated
the premiere of On the Edge at the Bakersfield Museum of Art.

Newly married in the 1960s, Joan and Jack took to collecting early.
“We reveled in our friendship with the artists as we brought our
communities together,” noted Quinn. Jack used his skills as a
prominent and influential attorney to help an array of emerging
artists and their dealers navigate the worlds of law and business,
while Joan found herself both muse and promoter.

The companion exhibit, Discovering Takouhi: Portraits of Joan
Agajanian Quinn, curated by Natalie Varbedian and Gina Grigorian
includes Armenian artists such as Dahlia Elsayed, Jean Kazandjian,
Silvina Der-Meguerditchian, Ara Oshagan, Zaven Sarkissian, and Aram
Saroyan. The distinctive works are a selection from Quinn’s
unprecedented collection of portraits consisting of over 300 gifts by
friends who have painted, sculpted and photographed her image in their
style.

“We are incredibly excited to exhibit these prominent works owned by
American-Armenian collector Joan Agajanian Quinn,” said AMA Executive
Director Jason Sohigian. “We are a living museum that preserves and
shares ancient and medieval artifacts and has a long tradition of also
highlighting modern art in our galleries.”

Joan is the co-host of Beverly Hills View and has been the producer
and host of the Joan Quinn Profiles for over 35 years. The Los Angeles
native was West Coast Editor of Andy Warhol’s Interview, Society
Editor of Hearst’s Los Angeles Herald Examiner, and the founding West
Coast Editor of Condé Nast Traveler. She has been appointed to an
array of city and state commissions, and in 2017 Joan received the
Ellis Island Medal of Honor.

The exhibition opens on Thursday, June 16 with a reception for Museum
members at 5 pm and a preview for non-members at 7 pm. It runs from
June 16 to November 30 and is sponsored by the JHM Charitable
Foundation.

The Armenian Museum of America’s galleries are open Thursday through
Sunday from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm, and it is located at 65 Main Street,
Watertown, MA.
