Sixty day church service keeps hope alive for asylum family at Christmas
Family facing deportation to Armenia are protected by medieval Dutch law as long as church service continues

by  Daniel Boffey in The Hague

The pastors and volunteers at Bethel church, a small Protestant chapel tucked away on a quiet street in a residential district of The Hague, are preparing for what looks likely to be an unusually busy and anxious Christmas.

They worry that they will need to turn away some of the faithful at the door, and there are even tentative plans to live-stream the services on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, such is the expected level of interest.

The main concern, though, is to keep a flicker of hope alive among the Tamrazyan family – Sasun, his wife Anousche and their children Hayarpi, 21, Warduhi, 19, and Seyran, 15 – who have been holed up in the church for nearly two months, protected by a medieval law that says immigration authorities cannot enter while a religious service is ongoing.

The Tamrazyan family have been fighting to stay in the Netherlands since arriving from Armenia in 2009. They turned to the church in late October when their asylum application reached the end of the line and deportation appeared imminent.

The claim that their lives would be at risk in Armenia due to Sasun Tamrazyan's political activism has fallen on deaf ears, as has an application for a kinderpardon, a dispensation available to families with children who have lived in the Netherlands for more than five years.

With nowhere to go, the Tamrazyans put their fate in the hands of the Bethel church community in The Hague's Segbroek district. It was quick to respond. By Christmas Eve, a service in the chapel will have run continuously for 60 days and nights, or for more than 1,400 hours. It is thought to be the longest "asylum service" in Dutch history.

Through day and night, pastors hold services for six or seven hours at a time, always with a congregation of at least three people so they can justifiably describe their efforts as a religious service.

A list of phone numbers of neighbours ready to join the congregation at a moment's notice has been compiled should there be a danger of the chapel emptying, but it has never been needed.

The case has become something of a cause célèbre but visitors have generally been kept away from the family members, who have struggled to deal with the attention and uncertainty over their future.

In her first interview with a British newspaper, Sasun's eldest daughter, Hayarpi, a student of econometrics at Tilburg University, said it was only hope that was sustaining them. "If we don't have that then I don't know. I need hope to keep going," she said.

"We can't go outside here because there is a risk of being arrested and we don't want to take risks", she added. "There may be police and in one minute we could be arrested. It is dreadful we can't be free and do what you want – study, attend lectures, do the things you normally do.

"We don't know what is going to happen and that is very difficult. We are trying to do the things that we always did, online lectures, my brother is doing homework, and we get support from his school and people here. That strengthens us."

Since the first service started at 1.30pm on 26 October, more than 650 pastors from the Netherlands, Germany, France and Belgium have done their bit, offering meditation, preaching, readings or even "cleaning services", where hoovering is combined with song.

The pastors say they are doing it not only for the Tamrazyans but for all the children of asylum seekers, who the Dutch Protestant church says are being poorly served by the government. For some, the case has come to symbolise a falling away of the traditional tolerance in Dutch society – and the church's resistance to it.

"I received a call on 24 October from a colleague who had a phone call from someone close to the family," said Derk Stegeman, a pastor at the church, recalling the moment he was made aware of the case. "They asked whether they [the family] could get asylum in our church.

"Of course there were doubts. We had a thorough discussion about it and got lots of information to be sure that the story was a good one that symbolised their fate and that of the families of the 400 children or or so who should be given amnesty."

"What was special for this family was that it was the state that appealed against the family," Stegeman said. "Two times the courts decided they could stay, and the state appealed two times. They applied for a kinderpardon, which was denied, and they had to wait almost two years for this decision."

"The first reason for the service is the child amnesty regulation, because we think they have been here for nine years and if they are not applicable for the kinderpardon, who would be?"

Stegeman said the church would keep on going as long as there was hope that the state would reconsider.

"I think we can go on very long time but we don't want this to be a game or a fight," he said. "It is not about who is the strongest, it is about hope for the family. We started this by saying we respect our government and the courts … If there is no hope for us and the family to see, I think it would be difficult to go on".

"Our idea at first was that this would be a burden", Stegeman added, "but it in effect it has become our campfire."

Azeri media discuss Armenian election

By BBC Monitoring

Views in Azerbaijan on the outcome of the 9 December parliamentary election in Armenia were largely split according to political lines.

Independent outlets and opposition figures say that following the Armenian election, Azerbaijan is the only undemocratic country in the region. Pro-government media focused on the low turnout and the lack of a true opposition in the new Armenian parliament.

Blow to Baku's reputation

A commentary by independent news agency Turan said that Nikol Pashinyan's victory in the election damaged Azerbaijan's reputation. "Official Baku has become the only government in the South Caucasus which the democratic world criticises for authoritarian rule, the cult of personality, opposition arrests and violations of freedoms of speech and assembly," it said.

The commentary added that the election results would not help Azerbaijan in the Karabakh conflict as Armenian's new leader has never said that Armenian troops could withdraw from Azerbaijani lands.

In general it noted that Nikol Pashinyan's activities so far indicate that he would continue the previous government's policy on Karabakh.

Opposition leader Ali Karimli wrote on Facebook that Armenia's democratic image is strengthening which, in turn, may weaken Baku's' position in the Karabakh conflict.

"The democratisation of Armenia has strengthen the tendency towards democratic changes in the region. It is a positive thing that Armenia is moving away from Russia's influence, but if democratic changes lag in Azerbaijan, our positions in the Karabakh conflict may weaken. Under these circumstances, the only way to protect our national interests is to democratise Azerbaijan with no delay," Karimli said.

'Victory amounting to defeat'

In contrast, pro-government media focused on the low turnout, saying that the Armenian new leadership is losing popularity. Media outlets also underscored the lack of opposition in the country's new parliament.

Private pro-government news website 1news.az said that Pashinyan's victory "amounts to defeat".

"The outcome of the election, to be more precise, the voter turnout, was not rosy… Many demonstrated their disappointment in the new government by not going to the voting booths… Voters do not care about election when they have empty fridges at home," the website said in a commentary on 11 December.

"It has turn out that the barometer which has long showed high popular support of Pashinyan shows zero now," it said.

MP Rasim Musabayov told 1news.az that Pashinyan "secured a constitutional majority in parliament by criticising the previous government. "The election was probably free, but it was not fair or competitive because there is no opposition in parliament now," he added.

Pro-government news website Day.az said on 12 December that according to unnamed Armenian experts, Pashinyan has lost 10 per cent of his voters – from the 80 per cent his bloc won in the Yerevan municipal election in September to the 70 per cent his bloc received in the 9 December polls.

The website's commentary added that seats in the new Armenian parliament will be occupied by "grant-eaters", i.e. NGO representatives who used to depend on foreign grants to survive.

"In a word, now sitting in the Armenian parliament, they will give Armenians a load of garbage while simultaneously be busy with things like marijuana, same-sex marriages, privileges to sectarians and other vulgarities. And we can tell the Armenian people – bully for you."

The vice speaker of the Azerbaijan parliament, Bahar Muradova, said that everything possible had been done to ensure Pashinyan's victory and those who could prevent this were isolated while voters were intimidated.

Pro-government Novoye Vremya newspaper said on 10 December that Pashinyan may turn into a dictator as there will be no opposition in the new parliament. "Armenia's incumbent acting prime minister may soon become a dictator with all the relevant consequences – repression of dissent and rejection of the pluralism of opinions. But Pashinyan and his team should remember how dictators end up sometimes," the paper said.

Little optimism for Karabakh talks

Novoye Vremya went on to say that it does not believe that Pashinyan's alleged compliancy will have a positive impact on the Karabakh peace talks.

"All the political moves of Armenia's incumbent premier regarding the Karabakh settlement do not inspire confidence," the paper said. "Karabakh, as many Armenians say, is a national issue and heads of state cannot decide anything without the people's consent. However high-sounding these claims may seem, they reflect the current reality in Armenia," the paper added.

Private pro-government newspaper Musavat said on 10 December that the only way for Armenia's new government to improve the situation in the country is to demonstrate a "constructive approach to the Karabakh conflict". If it does not happen, it will mean that the country lacks political groups "wishing peace and capable of resolving the Karabakh conflict peacefully". Then war will be the only way left to resolve the conflict, the paper added.

Independent Zerkalo newspaper said on 11 December that Pashinyan's main task is to "free the Armenian public of the bizarre idea of a Great Armenia and start real negotiations to resolve the Karabakh conflict".

"Either he resolves the Karabakh conflict and radically changes everything, or he continues [ex-president] Serzh's [Sargsyan] unsuccessful policy and betrays the velvet revolution," the newspaper said.

President of Armenia Armen Sarkissian together with spouse Nune Sarkissian on November 27 visited the Berlin headquarters of the German Red Cross.

The German Red Cross, which provides humanitarian aid across the world in the zones affected by natural disasters and armed conflicts, started conducting activities in Armenia immediately after the 1988 Spitak earthquake. The organization has been actively engaged in both the rescue operations, as well as provided comprehensive assistance to the residents affected by the earthquake, by cooperating with the Armenian Red Cross Society.

President Armen Sarkissian met with President of the German Red Cross Gerda Hasselfeldt, thanked for providing support to the Armenian people at that difficult stage.

During the meeting with the staff of the organization, the Armenian President talked about the heavy consequences of the devastating earthquake, the human losses and stated: “All these is very painful and tragic. But there is also a very human, warm story in these 30 years. A story about human love, care, attention and absence of indifference. We, all Armenians both in Armenia and worldwide, will never forget the warmness, attention and human attitude our friends across the world and from this perfect country showed to Armenia and the Armenian people. I want you to be sure that each Armenian keeps that gratitude and respect in his/her heart. These are not just beautiful words: recently I visited Gyumri, and I noticed that gratitude not only among the elderly generation, but also among the youth who didn’t see the earthquake by their own eyes, but keep their history and bear the gratitude conveyed them from their parents. Therefore, I am here to express words of gratitude not only on my own behalf, but also on behalf of the Armenian people”.

During the meeting the Armenian President handed over state awards and memorial medals to several employees of the German Red Cross.

Armen Sarkissian asked Gerda Hasselfeldt to convey his words of gratitude to the multiple participants of the German Red Cross, all those who invest their time, life and love to overcome other’s difficulties.

At the end of the event Gerda Hasselfeldt handed over the 10.000 Euros donation coupon to Nune Sarkissian which is provided for renovating Gyumri’s Berlin polyclinic.

The Armenian President thanked for the donation and added that he will also make a donation with the same amount of money for the renovation of the polyclinic as an _expression_ of real friendship between the two peoples and an opportunity to carry out major works.

Lavrov: Until internal political processes in Armenia are completed, it will hardly be possible to seriously consider concrete options for resolving the Karabakh crisis

Yerevan November 2

Marianna Mkrtchyan. Until internal political processes in Armenia are completed, it will hardly be possible to work seriously, to consider concrete options for getting out of this crisis and ensuring a full-fledged Nagorno-Karabakh settlement. This was announced on November 2 in Moscow during a press conference with OSCE Secretary General Thomas Greminger by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, commenting on the recent processes around the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the agreement in Dushanbe, as well as appeals from Yerevan to draw Artsakh to the negotiating table.

He recalled that Russia is one of the three countries of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs. According to him, it is in this format that quite intensive efforts have been made in recent years to find ways to unblock the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. "As far as I know, the agreement of the Dushanbey meeting of the RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev was that contacts should be continued, and that the foreign ministers would meet, and that, of course, both Armenia and Azerbaijan will work with the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs, we welcome such an agreement, although of course we understand that as long as the internal political processes in Armenia are not completed, such stormy ones that we are seeing now are hardly possible to work seriously, assmatrivat specific options out of the crisis, and to ensure full functionality of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict ", – Lavrov expressed his belief.

Although, according to the Russian minister, contacts are planned in the process of preparing for these extraordinary parliamentary elections, which are scheduled for December in Armenia, and the co-chairs visit the region, meet with the leadership of Armenia and Azerbaijan, with the foreign ministers. According to him, the maintenance of such contacts, it is probably important that, as soon as circumstances allow, to engage in a serious consideration of issues related to the settlement.

"As for the announcements that Pashinyan made on several occasions about the need to involve the Nagorno-Karabakh party in the negotiations, we have already commented on these statements. This is an issue that should be resolved by the parties to the conflict In due time, the Karabakh representatives took part in the talks between Baku and Yerevan, at the suggestion of the Armenian leadership, this practice was changed and negotiations have been going on for many years only between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Of course, we proceed from the fact that Yerevan, in its negotiating positions, takes into account the approaches of Karabakh, but in order to change the current bilateral negotiation format, we need the consent of both parties. As far as we know, there is no such agreement. And I would not, frankly, put forward preliminary conditions in order to begin to consider the essential issues of the Karabakh settlement, "Lavrov concluded.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and his spouse Anna Hakobyan, President of Armenia Armen Sarkissian and First Lady Nune Sarkissian, Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II attended the national homage ceremony in honor of French-Armenian singer Charles Aznavour, which took place today in the Hotel des Invalides in Paris, France.

President of France Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron, former Presidents Nicolas Sarkozy and Francois Hollande, French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe, French politicians, artists and public figures and representatives of the French-Armenian community attended the ceremony.

The French National Guard Orchestra played the Armenian and French national anthems, and then PM Nikol Pashinyan and French President Emmanuel Macron approached the family of Charles Aznavour to offer condolences.

“We gathered today to bow and honor the great master of French chanson, Charles Aznavour. For eight decades this name has engraved smiles on millions of faces, has excited or calmed the breath of tens of millions, has injected glow in hundreds of millions of eyes.

And on October 1, 2018, this name stopped the world and international life for a moment, bringing an irreversible grief to the faces of hundreds of millions of people, publishing its last biggest poster in the headlines of leading newspapers of the world : « Charles Aznavour has died at the age of 94 ».

But what do these headlines tell us about? Emptiness or despair? Not at all, these headlines tell about the glorious victory of this great man and his family against his own destiny.

Charles Aznavour’s predecessors, surviving the Armenian Genocide, roamed worldwide and eventually settled in France, a country which gave shelter and hope to hundreds of thousands of Armenians, where Vaghinak Aznavour was born from, who then went on to become the great Charles Aznavour.

Bearing unimaginable difficulties, Vaghinak-Charles eventually found his calling, but no one else other than himself believed in this calling. Everyone was convincing him, explaining, that the stage isn’t his business, that singing isn’t his calling, that destiny in itself had been very generous toward him, by saving his parent from the disaster of genocide.

But Vaghinak Aznavuryan didn’t need compassion, but a mission, and he knew his mission and this mission was the unimaginable path of becoming Charles Aznavour. And he sang, he wrote, and he wrote and sang in empty and semi-empty halls and he sang tirelessly and without stopping and gave humanity time to understand and realize that a great star has originated in the skies of the global culture, which has yet to “blow up” the most prestigious concert halls of the world for several decades.

And his voice spread in all parts of the world, it reached the most remote countries and warmed up even the coldest hearts.

Unfortunately I did not manage to personally know the great master, Charles Aznavour. But believe me, I perceive him as my closest friend. Any Armenian perceives him this way, because Aznavour is the person who increased the name of Armenians to new heights, who gave new breath to the pride of Armenians, who was able to live with the pains, concerns and dreams of his historic homeland and his people.

This is also the reason that Charles Aznavour was awarded the title of National Hero of Armenia. But he earned this title not only with his genius of a chansonnier, but for the unforgettable contribution for the establishment of the Republic of Armenia.

Streets and Squares are named after him in Armenia, while his majestic statue rises for already many years in Armenia’s second city of Gyumri, and he is perhaps the only man for whom a statue was erected in Armenia in his living years.

Mourning is declared in Armenia on the occasion of Charles Aznavour’s death and this all expresses the kind of Armenian love, which any Armenian, any Armenian with no exception has for this great man, this great Frenchman, this great citizen of the world.

Your Excellency President of France Mr. Emmanuel Macron,

During this monumental farewell ceremony of Charles Aznavour, I can’t not express the special respect and gratitude that our people have for your country. I would like to express the gratitude of the Armenian people to the French state and all French people for giving shelter to our people who survived the genocide and creating favorable environment for the development of Armenian talent.

Armenians of France have given names such as Charles Aznavour, Henri Verneuil, Georges Garvarentz, Jansem, Carzou and France became a kind oasis of the rebirth of our people.

Certainly, Charles Aznavour, was a great devotee of France, a great citizen of France, a unique messenger of French, but he was also a great defender of Armenia, a citizen of Armenia, and Ambassador of Armenia.

He was living with the concerns of Armenia, and our people saw and felt his care during the major earthquake which took place thirty years ago, during all the difficult years of Armenia’s independence.

Charles Aznavour also did not remain indifferent towards the non violent, velvet, democratic revolution which took place in Armenia, and in the last letter addressed to me he in part wrote : « As soon as my health will allow, I am planning to visit new Armenia and get to know the healthy forces which will develop the future of our nation. »

The great maestro was planning to visit Armenia next week, on the occasion of the 17th La Francophonie summit, and I promised him to introduce to New Armenia, I promised that he would instantly feel the optimism and spirit of the victorious citizens of New Armenia.

Unfortunately, I was unable to keep this promise, i regret, that nevertheless Aznavour managed to address his final message to New Armenia in the letter written to me, saying : I heartily want Armenia’s youth to be able to display its entire potential and make their dreams come true in Armenia.

Dear Maestro, Honorable Charles Aznavour,

In your letter, you accurately coined what the Armenian people want, what the Armenian youth wants. And now, here, in front of the entire world I want to solemnly promise to you, that we will make your dream come true. I would like to reassure that I am selflessly dedicated to the work which must make New Armenia the way you dreamt about it. Free and happy Armenia will truly be the worthy appreciation toward your unforgettable contribution towards the Armenian people and Armenia.

I bow before you, great Frenchman, great Armenian, great artist, great humanist.

Rest in Peace, dear Maestro,’ Pashinyan ,in part, said.

President of France Emmanuel Macron said:

“Charles Aznavour wanted to live a century, he promised this to himself, he promised to us, as if it were the last challenge of his life. Age never deprived him from the insatiable thirst for life, the desire to create, love and sing, but he passed away few steps back from his goal.

This sudden emptiness made us understand an obvious thing, that for an entire century it was him that we lived through, at moments of hardships, bitterness and hope Charles Aznavour gave us the comforting mirror with his art, with which he mitigated our lives for many years, helped to withstand the challenges of life. His songs weren’t empty summer songs which would make people happy for a moment and then be forgotten, his songs became comfort, consolation for millions, he was singing for us as a life companion, telling about life’s difficulties. He was speaking about time in a unique way, his work didn’t only tell about sorrow, they were also presenting his experience of immigration and exile. They say that years of exile are calculated double, Frenchmen noticed this in him very quickly.

During the years Charles Aznavour’s voice has united us, regardless of our age and social status. Aznavour united us and become one of France’s faces. Aznavour’s songs are first of all poems, lyrics of which go into our hearts, the titles of these poems and chorus of the songs have become a legacy for us.

In this very way that establishes the genius of an artist. The French language became the source, connection for Aznavour which tied with France. The son of Armenian and Greek immigrants, who didn’t receive education, instinctively understood that language is a state within a state in France. The son of the actor became a Parisian, first began to appear in films, with difficulties, sometimes with short dialogues, but he never aspired to become an actor. Nevertheless he appeared in sixty films, many of which became masterpieces. He always stood by the youth, was open for new music, voices and ideas. He wrote for young artists until the end, he continued helping, supporting them, by this establishing bridges between generations. This is how he imagined France, because he knew to what extend France is connected to the entire world. He sang in eight languages, but served his songs to the public everywhere in French language.

From all missions he preferred loyalty. He was loyal to his parents, his wife, family, relatives, friends, acquaintances and strangers, he was also loyal to Armenia. Aznavour was the son of Armenia, the friend, ambassador, also the generous son who provided assistance to the victims of the 1988 earthquake.

This commitment of his is today continued by the Aznavour Foundation, for the benefit of Armenians, Armenia, France-Armenia friendship. Despite the pain that the genocide left, Aznavour continued his actions and developed his struggle. Aznavour always sang about Armenia, the Armenian people, wanting to protect the dignity of the people who were attempted to be silenced.

Remaining committed to his roots, he showed us the small part of foreign nation in his French soul. Thanks to him Armenia has given a lot to France. Through him today is an occasion to remember to what extend we, as a nation, owe to all those Armenians who were forced to leave their country and came to find shelter here. This is a common fate. Armenians of all countries, my thoughts are with you today.

Next week, Charles Aznavour had to be in Yerevan with us to participate in the La Francophonie summit, and his place will remain absent. Let the friendship between Armenia and France be worthy of the lessons he gave.

I am sure that for many years to come millions of people at times of hardships, hope and happiness will keep in their memory the music or lyrics of the songs which this exclusive artist has left us with. He will continue his path in the hearts of us all, walking ahead, with his hand in the pocket, a smile on his face, and together with us he will proudly pass this century. From now he will never leave us, because poets never die in France.”
