ArmInfo. The US Congress urges not to act on Armenian resolution,
the Turkish newspaper Zaman says.

The newspaper says that the Obama administration is urging Congress
to hold off on a resolution declaring the World War I era incidents
as genocide. The House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee
was scheduled to vote on the resolution Thursday, and appeared likely
to endorse it.

But White House spokesman Mike Hammer said Secretary of State Hillary
Rodham Clinton had spoken with the committee’s chairman, Democratic
Rep. Howard Berman, on Wednesday and indicated that such a vote would
jeopardize reconciliation talks between Turkey and Armenia.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ US House Committee on Foreign Affairs adopted
Armenian Genocide resolution (H.Res.252) (23 for; 23 against).

After it was put to the vote in Profile Committee, the Resolution
will be submitted to the House of Representatives for final vote.

Similar procedure will be held at US Senate.

The Armenian Genocide resolution (H.Res. 106) was submitted to the
House of Representatives by Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA), on
January 30, 2007, during the 110th United States Congress. It was
a non-binding resolution calling upon the US President to ensure
that the foreign policy of the United States reflects appropriate
understanding and sensitivity concerning issues related to human
rights, ethnic cleansing, and genocide documented in the United States
record relating to the Armenian Genocide, and for other purposes. Upon
its introduction it was referred to United States House Committee
on Foreign Affairs where it passed a 27-21 vote and was sent back
for a full house vote. On October 26, 2007, in a letter addressed
to the House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, four key sponsors of the bill,
requested a debate on the bill in full House to be postponed.

The resolution affirming the U.S. record on the Armenian
Genocide (H.Res.252) was formally introduced in the U.S. House of
Representatives by Reps. Adam Schiff (D.-CA), George Radanovich
(R.-CA), Frank Pallone, Jr. (D.-NJ), and Mark Kirk (R.-Ill) in 2009.

It currently has 137 co-sponsors.

He Couldn’t Say "Robert Kocharyan"

The section reading "Facts confirmed by the court" in the verdict
of the first instance court of Kentron and Nork-Marash districts
sentencing editor-in-chief of "Haykakan Zhamanak" daily Nikol
Pashinyan start with the following text: "Serzh Sargsyan won in the
RA presidential elections held on February 19, 2008."

During today’s examination of his protest at the Appeals Court, the
judge didn’t like NIkol Pashinyan’s the reference to this statement.

In general, the Appeals Court headed by judge Serzhik Avetisyan
prohibited Pashinyan from using the words "Robert Kocharyan, Serzh
Sargsyan, Sashik Sargsyan, Samvel Alexanyan, assassins, oligarchs
and shaved-heads".

Not paying attention to that, Nikol Pashinyan continued: "I am
charged with the murders that took place on March 1. Everyone knows
that Robert Kocharyan gave the command to open fire on March 1. The
government needed as much verdicts for March 1 as possible. Serzh
Sargsyan didn’t collect as much votes during the February 19 elections
as the verdicts on March 1 were reached.

Today, for nearly 4 hours, Nikol Pashinyan literally interpreted the
sentencing verdict and substantiated that he had nothing to do with
the mass disturbances that took place near Myasnikyan statue on March
1, 2008. Pashinyan underlined that his verdict stated the actions
by Alexander Arzumanyan, Sasun Mikayelyan, Myasnik Malkhasyan and
representatives of the opposition who were sentenced by the "Case of
Seven", but Pashinyan’s speeches were found in the case. "According
to the verdict against me, I am the commander of Commanders Sasun
Mikayelyan, Myasnik Malkhasyan and Hakob Hakobyan. That is a great
honor for me, but such a formulation is ridiculous."

Pashinyan also recalled that not only the Pan-National Movement, but
presidential candidate from "Orinats Yerkir" party Artur Baghdasaryan
and ARF candidate Vahan Hovhannisyan were also displeased with the
results of the February 19 presidential elections and had openly
announced that. "Why are they in liberty?" asked Pashinyan, adding
that the leaders of the pan-national movement, as well as him, did
not motivate anybody to violence and did not instill hatred. "The
government instilled hatred in the people through their actions."

Judge Serzhik Avetisyan removed journalist Liza Tchagharyan and Sargis
Kloyan-father of victim of March 1 Gor Kloyan-from the courtroom for
applauding Pashinyan. Before getting out of the courtroom, the father
of the victim managed to say: "You are committing a bigger crime by
concealing the assassins. You are sentencing an innocent person. You
will all be brought to justice."

Two of the three judges of the Appeals Court, including Serzhik
Avetisyan and Arshak Khachatryan, were talking together throughout
Nikol Pashinyan’s speech. When Pashinyan interrupted their discussion
to draw their attention, Arshak Khachatryan said: "You are ignoring
us and not looking at us. You say, ‘dear judge’, but turn toward the
courtroom. That is why we are talking to each other." "You can even
play cards if you like," said Pashinyan.

Pashinyan will continue his remarks in the next trial. Although
Pashinyan informed that tomorrow the Constitutional Court will
hear Pashinyan’s claim for recognizing the results of the January
10 elections at precinct #10 as invalid and that his presence was
mandatory, the Appeals Court set the next trial for tomorrow and at
the same time-11 a.m.

Armenian Lawyers’ Association: Obama Recognized The Genocide

ARMENIAN LAWYERS’ ASSOCIATION: OBAMA RECOGNIZED THE GENOCIDE

PanARMENIAN.Net
04.03.2010 11:29 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ It’s erroneous to think that the U.S. President
did not recognize the Armenian Genocide because he did not use the
term Genocide, according to the Armenian lawyers’ association.

"The term Genocide is comparatively new, introduced in the
international practice by Polish lawyer of Jewish descent Raphael
Lemkin in 1944. Before, each nation that survived genocide gave it
its own name – Holocaust, Mets Eghern. Barack Obama used the term
Mets Eghern which is identical to a more modern term Genocide,"
the association said in a statement.

The Armenian lawyers’ association also emphasized that the term Mets
Eghern was used twice and was qualified as an attempt to exterminate
the Armenian nation. "It’s obvious that the U.S. President put the
same meaning into the term Mets Eghern as we, Armenians, do… We
appreciate highly the congressional initiative and call for adoption
of the Armenian Genocide Resolution," the statement said.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ During the past two months, Azerbaijan doubled
efforts to spread anti-Armenian propaganda. Baku doesn’t spare
financial and human resources to slander Armenia in the eyes of the
international community.

"Azerbaijan shows complete reluctance to reach a compromise on
Karabakh," head of the Armenian delegation to OSCE Parliamentary
Assembly Aram Safaryan said.

As to Kazakhstan’s chairmanship in the OSCE, he said official Astana
has essential tools to promote resolution of the Nagorno Karabakh
conflict. "Organization of Sargsyan-Aliyev meeting in Astana is
currently under discussion on the initiative of Kazakh President
Nursultan Nazarbayev," Mr. Safaryan said.

He also emphasized that continuous violations of the Treaty on
Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) by Azerbaijan prove that
the country is preparing for war.

For his part, member of the Armenian delegation to the OSCE PA,
Khachik Harutyunyan said that the delegation will work for adoption
of the resolution prohibiting the OSCE member countries from using
force in conflict settlement.

report on the outcomes of his regional visit due in March.
