first message to Yerevan

ArmInfo. Aliyev’s absence from the Global Nuclear Summit scheduled for
April 12-13 in Washington is the White House’s first message to
Yerevan, says Aleksander Iskandaryan, Director of the Caucasus
Institute.

He told media no Friday that the US Administration does everything
possible to continue the Armenian- Turkish normalization, therefore
Washington will keep on pressing both the parties, especially Turkey.

"Nevertheless, the USA has no many levers of pressure on Ankara, so it
may ask Ankara for partial opening of the border with Armenia or
something like that." He said that the United States so far refrain
from stronger pressure on Armenia not to make Yerevan recall its
signatures put under the Zurich Protocols. "In fact, the USA strives
to demonstrate Armenia its clearance policy between the Karabakh
process and the Armenian-Turkish relations," Iskandaryan said.

President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan and President of Georgia Mikheil
Saakashvili will represent the South Caucasus at the Global Nuclear
Summit on April 12-13 in Washington. President of Azerbaijan Ilham
Aliyev has not been invited to the Summit. President of Armenia has
already agreed to meet with Erdogan.

EU wants to be committed to the balanced policy, it should not forget
about the fact of occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenia.

AZERBAIJANI POLITICAL EXPERT: ARMENIA FAILED TO LIVE UP TO EXPECTATIONS

The forthcoming meeting between Armenian President and Turkish Prime
Minister in Washington is very important with subsequent developments
in our region being dependant on it, Azerbaijani political expert
Eldar Namazov said.

"In the context of the Sargsyan-Erdoga meeting, one must take
into account that Azerbaijan has recently agreed to updated Madrid
principles, while Armenia has not yet given a positive response yet as
well as the fact that Ankara has clearly stated its position on the
Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno- Karabakh conflict and Armenian-Turkish
normalization," the expert said.

"For me, it is clear that Turkey cannot change its position 180
degrees and take serious steps to normalize relations with Armenia
without reaching any steps in the Karabakh conflict," the political
expert added.

"It is also clear that Armenia’s position is now much weaker. It did
not live up to expectations. The OSCE Minsk Group and the international
community expected Armenia to provide a positive response to the
updated Madrid principles developed on basis of the OSCE Minsk Group
proposals. In this respect, I think that any concession on part of
the Turkish Prime Minister is impossible.

Sargsyan will not be able to persuade Erdogan to make concessions,"
Namazov noted.

"Serzh Sargsyan is less likely to compromise in wake of the meeting
with Erdogan in these issues," the expert underscored.

Two of the main principles proposed by the OSCE Minsk Group for the
resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict – territorial integrity
and nation’s right to self-determination – are the continuation of
each other, General Major Arkady Ter-Tadevosyan, a freedom fighter
of the Artsakh war and known also as Comandos, said at a press
conference today.

Ter-Tadevosyan also mentioned that these two principles are
inseparables and therefore, the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is in

On April 6, the Armenian Library and Museum of America (ALMA)
featured a highly anticipated book presentation by Dr. Hayk Demoyan,
Armenian Genocide Museum director. Hayk Demoyan presented his new
Armenian-language books, which trace the development and evolution
of athletics in Armenia through sports artefacts and archives.

"Sports and Athletics in the Ottoman Empire" features the history
of sports and physical training among the Armenian population of
the Ottoman Empire. The rise of athletic clubs, the organization of
Pan-Armenian Olympic Games, and establishment of boy scouts are among
the remarkable topics Demoyan covers in this fascinating run through
of Armenia’s longstanding sports history. The histories of how the
athletic movement in Western Armenia and Cilicia developed and the
development of Armenian women sports unions are also discussed.

The presentation also covered the first two volumes of the
encyclopaedia on Armenians Wars and Martial Arts, an ongoing project
that introduces Armenian and international readers to newly discovered
facts about warfare, martial arts and armour development in Armenian
history. At completion this specialized encyclopaedia will include
50 volumes. Demoyan will focus his presentation on the Bronze Age
(Vol. 1) and the Kingdom of Van (Vol. 2).
