MY PROMISE TO FIGHT FOR LAWFULNESS AND JUSTICE: NIKOL PASHINYAN’S ADDRESS

Haykakan Zhamanak ("Armenian Times") chief editor Nikol Pashinyan’s
trial resumed at the Court of First Instance of Shengavit Community
in Yerevan today. Today Pashinyan will be present at the court as a
candidate for member of parliament for the first time. In honour of
his nomination, Pashinyan sent a message, which states:

"I put forth my candidacy for member of parliament in the election
scheduled on January 10, 2010, at Yerevan electoral district N10. In
this electoral district, the mandate of a member of parliament
remained vacant after the elected member of parliament, my friend
Khachatur Sukiasyan, resigned from his mandates. I made this decision
to participate in the electoral process in order to keep my promise to
fight, by all means, for lawfulness and justice, for the democratic
right to formulate leadership, and for the dignity of people living
in Armenia.

"The coming election will give Armenian citizens the opportunity to
break the chain of connivance and violence surrounding them every
day, and I consider it my duty to realize that opportunity as a
political prisoner detained at the Yerevan-Centre penal institution
(KGB’s prison) and as a citizen of Armenia. I am taking this step
of nominating my candidacy for the memory of the innocent victims
of March 1, 2008 events, for the sake of the political prisoners
kept in dungeons of tyranny, for the sake of all the citizens whose
rights were violated and whose dignity was wounded by the outrage. I
am taking this step for the sake of our children, whom we promised
would live in a Free and Happy Armenia."

In his message, Pashinyan also greeted the parties included in the
Armenian National Congress, the leaders of those parties and the
Congress, expressed his gratitude to the party of "the Republic," its
political council, member of the political council Suren Surenyants,
who "found it possible to protect their principles and values by
supporting my candidacy."

"I believe in our victory not only in the January 10 election, but
also for the sake of the Constitution, in our fight for people’s
leadership. I am sure that the victory will become realized when
everyone dreaming of a Free, Strong and Happy Armenia, irrespective
of their political and civil position, in the name of victory, does
everything possible he can do," Pashinyan ended his address.

Turkey Making All The Right Moves

TURKEY MAKING ALL THE RIGHT MOVES
by Arthur I. Cyr

Sentinel & Enterprise (Fitchburg, Massachusetts)
November 2, 2009 Monday

What’s in a name? Plenty, and the same goes for a nation’s flag.

The national flag remains a potent emotional symbol, demonstrated this
month by intense — and underreported — conflict among Turkey, Armenia
and Azerbaijan. The flag flap has important bearing on international
relations, especially U.S. foreign policy.

Azerbaijan flags were removed from a stadium in Bursa, Turkey, where
a World Cup match between Armenia and Turkey was being held. They
were found in a trashcan. In retaliation, Azerbaijani officials in
Baku removed Turkey’s flag from a war memorial commemorating Turkish
troops who fell in fighting for Azerbaijan independence in 1918. On
Oct. 27, the flags were raised again.

Turkey is making strong efforts, so far reciprocated, to resolve
fundamental conflict with Armenia, dating back to the Armenian genocide
early in the 20th century. On Oct. 10, the two nations signed a
protocol to open their shared border. Turkey closed the border in
1993 as a gesture of solidarity with Azerbaijan. In mid-October,
President Serkh Sarkisian became the first head of state of Armenia
to travel to Turkey.

Armenia-Turkey rapprochement in turn has antagonized Azerbaijan,
which has been losing to Armenia in a border dispute involving the
territory of Nagorno-Karabakh. This has occurred despite repeated
assurances from national officials in Ankara that relations with Baku
would remain strong.

This interplay may be difficult to follow, involving complex politics
as well as obscure geography, but Turkey’s vital strategic importance
provides a powerful incentive to understand developments. Despite
current tensions between a religious government and a secular
constitution and state, Turkey remains a strong, stable representative
democracy. Eventually, the nation may serve as a bridge between East
and West that brings essential economic and political modernization
to the Arab world.

Turkey’s relative isolation within Europe is a problem. The European
Union has turned the nation’s application for membership into seemingly
endless agony. No doubt, concern about Islamic extremism contributes
to caution, but more general, long-standing European prejudice against
outside populations undeniably is involved.

Condescension is combined with inertia.

Developments within Turkey overall have been reassuring. The people
remain committed to representative government, an effective counter
against al-Qaida and other extremist movements. To date, terrorist
acts in Turkey have boomeranged.

The government in Ankara has placed priority on good relations with
Israel as well as with Arab states. Turkey commands vital sea lanes
and trade routes, including the Straits of Bosporus, and potential
oil and gas lines from the Caucasus.

Ankara-Washington cooperation is strongly rooted. Turkey has been
actively engaged in Afghanistan, including major military command
responsibilities. During the first Persian Gulf War, U.S. B-52 bombers
were deployed on Turkish soil, a potentially risky move by Ankara.

Turkey played a vital Allied role during the Korean War; the UN
military cemetery at Pusan contains a notably large number of Turkish
graves.

This background is of even greater importance given that ties between
Turkey and the United States are currently badly strained. The Bush
administration invasion of Iraq was bitterly opposed by Ankara.

Attacks by anti-Ankara Kurdish terrorists based in Iraq have led to
Turkish military strikes into the northern region of that country.

The Obama administration is giving some priority to rebuilding frayed
relations with Turkey, along with Israel, our most important ally in
the region. This may reinforce positive steps in Southeast Europe.

Martirosyan KOs Pena in thriller
By Alexey Sukachev

Russian middleweight slugger Gennady Martirosyan (19-2, 8 KOs) is
expected to make a return to the world rankings following his
all-action two-way knockout win over Spaniard Miguel Angel Pena
(28-15-4, 9 KOs) several hours ago at the Gladiator Fight Club in St.
Petersburg, Russia. Martirosyan vs. Pena for a vacant WBO European
160lb belt topped a huge local card, arranged by Jab Promotions.

After the tedious first round, Martirosyan brought some real heat to
the 36-years old Pyrenean guest and dropped him twice at the beginning
of the second stanza. After the latter knockdown, St. Petersburg-based
Armenian went to have the job done and was amazingly dropped down
himself after a short but powerful left hand by Pena. Martirosyan
survived till the end of the stanza and came back to the basics in the
next round. He was able to wobble the Spanish fighter with a strong
right hand at the end of the first minute of the round and sent him
down at the finish of the second for the third time in the contest.
Martirosyan went right after the Spaniard once again and was also once
again hurt by Pena not to capitalize on his previous success. Round
four was calmer until the end when the local hero rocked his foe with
a brutal left to the stomach. The end came during the fifth, when Pena
was down after a left-right one-two by Gennady, hardly got himself
upright only to be floored for the fifth time in the fight, prompting
referee to stop the bout inside the distance.

Armenian Church To Be Restored In Malatya

ARMENIAN CHURCH TO BE RESTORED IN MALATYA

PanARMENIAN.Net
30.10.2009 13:15 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ A Malatya foundation established to build mosques has
assumed the financial costs of the restoration of a historic Armenian
church located in the neighborhood where assassinated Turkish-Armenian
journalist Hrant Dink was born, Today’s Zaman reported.

The head of the Carmuzu Tepebasi Mosque Building and Preservation
Foundation, Latif Yildirim, said they started planning the project to
help restore the Armenian Tashoron Church in 2008 and wrote letters
to the Prime Ministry and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism as well
as Armenian businessmen to win their support. They also spoke with
the Armenian Patriarchate in March, he said.

Money had been allocated for the restoration by the Culture and
Tourism Ministry in 2009; however, due to budgetary problems, the
foundation decided to take on the costs of the restoration. While
noting that their project, which they call a "project of peace," is
a model of good relations between different faiths, Yildirim said,
"We do not think we will experience financial problems."

Armenian Archbishop Aram Atesyan said the church is a cultural treasure
and added, "We will be very happy if such a project is carried
out." He also noted that there are some other churches in need of
restoration and highlighted that this must also be done. The muhtar
(local official) of the neighborhood in which the church is situated,
Mustafa Sahin, said such a project would contribute to peace and
stressed, "Whether used as a place of worship or as a museum, the
historic church will contribute to unity and solidarity in the area
as well as to tourism."

ARMAN MUSINYAN: BORDER WON’T BE OPENED

The Armenian authorities have ‘served the Armenian Genocide to Turkey
on a dish’, but the border has not so far been reopened nor will it,"
Arman Musinyan, Spokesman for Armenia’s first president Chairman of the
Armenian National Congress (ANC) Levon Ter-Petrosyan, told reporters.

The reason for his conclusion is Turkish high-ranking officials’
statements linking the Armenian-Turkish rapprochement to the
Nagorno-Karabakh peace process. "The day the border is reopened,
I will state that the Nagorno-Karabakh problem has been resolved,"
Musikyan said.

He also stated that "after the Zurich deviation the dangerous
developments will intensify in the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process,
which does not promise anything good to Armenia."
